Hello Tom and Hank,
Finding a mixer with phono inputs these days, is just like looking for a
sonic needle in a sonic hay stack.
Your best bet, is to buy a phono preamp from a hi phi stereo store and
plug it in to 1 of the sets of line ins on the mixer.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

High Hank,
In an attempt to keep high quality in mind, this is the most affordable
phono stage preamp I could find on the net.

This is the Eastern Electric MANY MAX phono stage vacuum tube preamp.
You will find more information about it at:
http://www.morningstaraudio.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=6catid=5
I have one of these, but this is before prices got out of hands when you
know who took office.

Hope this helps.

High Garry,
Those phono preamps are for computer use, you'd have to have some kind of an
adapter in order to put that in to a line in.

You would need a phono preamp for hi phi use.
Hope this clarifies it.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Sunshine,
There is a company call Peavey.
In 1999, they made a box that they called, a tube sweetener.
It had 2 knobs per channel on it.
One was for sugar, the other one was for spice.
I used it as an equalizer.
It made my mixer sound like it had tubes in it, when it really didn't.
That box had a pare of 12AX7 tubes for the inputs, and a pare of 12AT7 tubes
for the outputs.
I still have my mike preamp, and I still use it.
But the only thing though, is you have to turn the gain just about all the
way

down in order to put a line level in to it without it clipping it.
The kind of tubes it has in it are, 4-X 12AX7/ECC83, 2-x12AT7/ECC81.
The controls are, from left to right: power stand by channel 1 gain low
frequency

high frequency.
Channel 2 gain low frequency high frequency and master volume.
This thing, makes a good equalizer too.
Also in 1959, Bogen made an equalizer that had vacuum tubes in it.
I saw an old Bogen equalizer on eBay, but the asking price was to much.
They wanted $4500 for it.
My best regards.

one of my favorite power amplifiers I had was made by Hauffman. it used

couple of electrolytic caps go bad, but it was easy enough to take care

High Garry,
Those were the mixers that had built in power amps in them.
There were some mixers that were only preamps, no power amps on board
at all!
But you had to have a really good power amp like the Bogen DS-265.
Or else, the RCA Victor DB-2130.
I have both of those amps.
I also have an RCA Victor stereo powered mixer that puts out 150 watts
per channel.
That one came out of an old church.
They were going to throw it out because it didn't work anymore.
I asked the pastor of that church what was wrong with it.
He told me, it just didn't work anymore.
I asked him if I could take it home with me, I mite be able to get it
to work again.
He said, sure, if you want it, then take it.
The only thing that I found wrong with it was, all 8 of the 6550 tubes
were burned out.
And some resisters and caps needed to be replaced.
Once I done that, it was like a new one all over again.
I still use it every now and then.
The record out jacks on that mixer, are connected to a pare of ECC82
tubes.
That really sweetens my recordings!
My best regards.

I was going to tell you the same thing, portable yesterday and today
are two different things. I used to have some Bogan and Duquesne

that were the size of portable televisions, and they were mono. they
were 90 watts. I don't think the young lady wants to tote anything
like
that.

High Garry,
That is not really true.
In the 1950's and 60's, some of them had to be portable.
Sometimes, a PA system had to be sat up to address a small gathering
of people.
Like for instants, in schools sometimes

an adapter in order to put that in to a line in.

You would need a phono preamp for hi phi use.
Hope this clarifies it.
My best regards.
 John.

go to the tracertech site and you will find a couple of inexpensive
phono preamps. a valve is what the British used to call vacuum tubes. a

Hello Tom and Hank,
Finding a mixer with phono inputs these days, is just like looking for
a sonic needle in a sonic hay stack.
Your best bet, is to buy a phono preamp from a hi phi stereo store and
plug it in to 1 of the sets of line ins on the mixer.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Hank,
I had the same issue with an Eastern Electric integrated vacuum tube
amplifier and my computer.
I guess it's the way the power supply in my computer and the amplifier are
grounded.

I couldn't do this with the computer, so I done it with the amp.
I lifted the ground wire from the chassis to get red of that humming noise.
When you have an amplifier that uses a pare of 5AR4 tubes or any kind of a
tube for a rectifier, you'll run in to that problem, especially if the power
cord is earth grounded.

Let the truth be told, that earth ground wire is not needed.
The thing can work without it.
But don't do this unless you really know what you're doing.
Because if you don't, you can get 1 nasty electric shock!
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
John.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-13 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Hank,
You have a number of things that could be happening there.
The problem could be in the preamp itself.
If the power supply is built in to the preamp, you could be picking up noise
from the power transformer.
Or else, the problem could be in your cartridge, or the wiring in your tone
arm.

Or, it could be, just your old audio cables.
If you have the money to do this, try changing out your old cartridge for a
new one.

If the problem still grossest, then try changing out the audio cables.
Your best bet, would be shielded cables to eliminate the unwanted humming
noise.
If that doesn't work, then maybe the wires in your tone arm may need to be
replaced, or you need a new phono stage preamp altogether.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

High Garry,
Those were the mixers that had built in power amps in them.
There were some mixers that were only preamps, no power amps on board at
all!

I asked him if I could take it home with me, I mite be able to get it to
work again.

High Garry,
That is not really true.
In the 1950's and 60's, some of them had to be portable.
Sometimes, a PA system had to be sat up to address a small gathering
of people.

Like for instants, in schools sometimes in the class rooms.
And also, some radio stations had to use them for remote broadcasting.
But the amplifiers in them, put out no more then 20 to 70 watts of
power.

But that was just the mono mottles.
The stereo mottles, had jacks on them that allowed you to hook up
turntables and open real tape recorders.

They put out a minimum of 70 to a maximum of 100 watts per channel.
So you see, they had to be portable so that they could be carried from
one place to another.

However, the higher powered ones, weren't light wait.
And the kinds of tubes that they used were either 7581's or 6550's.
Some of them, used either 6P35's or 6CA7's.
These were the kinds of power tubes they used.
They all used either ECC83's or 12AX7's for preamp tubes.
Some of them, used tubes like the 6DJ8 which is being called, the 6922
tube today.

They also used the ECC99 which is being called, the 12BF7 tube today.
There were some which are now being dubbed as odd tubes today being
used in the preamps of those mixers.
Tubes like the 6AU6 which is not being made anymore, and the EF86
tube.
Personally, I don't see how could some of those PA systems could be
called portable.

I say this because, some of them are as big as 19 to 25 inch TV sets.
My best regards.

want to use it for. Do you want a mixer with
only microphone inputs, combination of microphone
and line level inputs, etc. How many input
channels do you need? How many output buses do
you need? There are many uses for mixers and
they all have their purpose and function.

Anyway, below are a couple USB mixers that
someone asked about.

They also used the ECC99 which is being called, the 12BF7 tube today.
There were some which are now being dubbed as odd tubes today being used in
the preamps of those mixers.

Tubes like the 6AU6 which is not being made anymore, and the EF86 tube.
Personally, I don't see how could some of those PA systems could be called
portable.

I say this because, some of them are as big as 19 to 25 inch TV sets.
My best regards.

When asking about mixers you might say what you
want to use it for. Do you want a mixer with
only microphone inputs, combination of microphone
and line level inputs, etc. How many input
channels do you need? How many output buses do
you need? There are many uses for mixers and
they all have their purpose and function.

Anyway, below are a couple USB mixers that
someone asked about.

High Sunshine,
The simulators may simulate the warmth of the vacuum tube, but it cannot
reproduce the music the same way a vacuum tube can.

I had to prove that to a guy by the name of Bob Carver.
In 1998, he let me audition his Sun Fire Signature Series power amplifier.
Which is a transistor amplifier that was suppose to sound every little bit
like a vacuum tube amplifier.

I listen to allot of jazz music, some of it being big band.
Here is where that Sun Fire Signature Series power amplifier failed me.
All of the horns and wood winds, didn't come through that amp like they did
when I played those same records using my dad's Fisher 500-s stereo
receiver.

Which has nothing but vacuum tubes in it.
Even listening to some modern R B music, that amp really fell apart there
too as well.
I don't mean to start a fight on this list, but most blind people can hear
things that our sighted counter parts can't hear.
I sent that amp back to Mr. Carver with a note that said, BLOCK QUOTE START.
tube sound?

This is really a big fat joke.
To my ears, nothing sounds like a vacuum tube but a vacuum tube, and allot
of musicians feel that way too as well.
If that isn't the case, then why do they dump the simulators and return to
using vacuum tubes in their amplifiers? BLOCK QUOTE END.

Long story short, Mr. Carver didn't have any answers for those questions.
My best regards.
 John.

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-11 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

High Dan,
You are looking at two different things with improving the microphone pick
up.

The mike itself, has to be very sensitive.
The other thing is, resetting the gain.
If the gain is to low, the mike isn't going to pick up things that well.
This is one of the things that I dislike about my Fender Passport-250.
Using the mikes with the quarter inch jacks, don't give me enough gain and
sensitivity.

But I get the gain and sensitivity when using the XLR mikes.
The other thing I dislike about my Fender Passport-250 is, you only have 2
channels of line ins.
If you get in to a work field where you have to employ 4 CD players, you're
poop out of luck in that aspect.

My best regards.

Hi Doic, I totally agree. There is nothing like the tube sounds and the
older equipment. I have delt with sound equipment since the 60's and the
new mixers and amps don't cut it. However, I am empressed on improvement
of mic pickup with the newer models.

High Sunshine,
The simulators may simulate the warmth of the vacuum tube, but it cannot
reproduce the music the same way a vacuum tube can.

I had to prove that to a guy by the name of Bob Carver.
In 1998, he let me audition his Sun Fire Signature Series power
amplifier.
Which is a transistor amplifier that was suppose to sound every little
bit like a vacuum tube amplifier.

I listen to allot of jazz music, some of it being big band.
Here is where that Sun Fire Signature Series power amplifier failed me.
All of the horns and wood winds, didn't come through that amp like they

High Garry,
That is not really true.
In the 1950's and 60's, some of them had to be portable.
Sometimes, a PA system had to be sat up to address a small gathering of
people.
Like for instants, in schools sometimes in the class rooms.
And also, some radio stations had to use them for remote broadcasting.
But the amplifiers in them, put out no more then 20 to 70 watts of power.
But that was just the mono mottles.
The stereo mottles, had jacks on them that allowed you to hook up turntables
and open real tape recorders.
They put out a minimum of 70 to a maximum of 100 watts per channel.
So you see, they had to be portable so that they could be carried from one
place to another.
Some of them, used tubes like the 6DJ8 which is being called, the 6922 tube
today.

High Garry,
Those were the mixers that had built in power amps in them.
There were some mixers that were only preamps, no power amps on board at
all!

But you had to have a really good power amp like the Bogen DS-265.
Or else, the RCA Victor DB-2130.
I have both of those amps.
I also have an RCA Victor stereo powered mixer that puts out 150 watts per
channel.

That one came out of an old church.
They were going to throw it out because it didn't work anymore.
I asked the pastor of that church what was wrong with it.
He told me, it just didn't work anymore.
I asked him if I could take it home with me, I mite be able to get it to
work again.

He said, sure, if you want it, then take it.
The only thing that I found wrong with it was, all 8 of the 6550 tubes were
burned out.

And some resisters and caps needed to be replaced.
Once I done that, it was like a new one all over again.
I still use it every now and then.
The record out jacks on that mixer, are connected to a pare of ECC82 tubes.
That really sweetens my recordings!
My best regards.

High Garry,
That is not really true.

There were some which are now being dubbed as odd tubes today being used
in the preamps of those mixers.

Tubes like the 6AU6 which is not being made anymore, and the EF86 tube.
Personally, I don't see how could some of those PA systems could be
called portable.

I say this because, some of them are as big as 19 to 25 inch TV sets.
My best regards.
 John.

I agree with you. usually solid state mixers sound cold compared to the
tube predecessors. if you had a vacuum tube mixer it wouldn't be portable

High Garry,
Those were the mixers that had built in power amps in them.

 John.

Hey, guys and gals! I'm looking for a not terribly
sophisticated mike mixer that is small that I
can take on the
road with my Netbook. Any ideas?

Re: Best portable mike mixer out there?

2010-04-10 Thread Sunshine
John, you are right on that one .
the gsonic eq is a good vst for this and does sound exactually like the
eq/vacume tubs that we have grown to love.

High Garry,
I've been fooling around with audio equipment since I was 5 years old.
I've seen and heard it all.
Nothing sounds like a vacuum tube except a real live vacuum tube.
The simulators don't come close to it.
My best regards.
  John.

not for that price, they just simulate the British EQ effects. I
personally would opt for the optional battery powered one.

 High Tom,
Are you saying, some of these mixers have vacuum tubes in them?
  John.
