Ultimately, I think one of the best is Book Port, but then you may not be looking for a multi purpose device such as Book Port. The great thing about it is that it is totally accessible, and since it uses flash memory cards up to 4 gigabytes you can have a lot of music with you, and have more than one card so it is easier to have a large library of music, books, etc. and play them all on one unit. At half the price of the Book Port is the Olympus WS320M digital recorder and MP3 player. It plays both MP3 and WMA, records only in WMA. It is very small, runs on 1 tripple A battery, and can store 1 gigabyte of files. It has a USB interface that makes copying files to it a very easy thing to do. OK, I'm confused. I had heard that some IRivers are very accessible and user-friendly! I went to eBay thinking I might find something helpful and I found nothing with more than 1 or 2 gb of space in the ifp 700-series. I can't believe I wouldn't want a video iPod since it is already known to work with Rockbox! Nick, I'm not sure what you mean since your statement doesn't reference any particular product. First we think the iPod is great because it's able to hold music and books and then it's NOT COOL! I'm going to hold off and seee what other MP3 players might be out there. I've got an IFP 899 model from Iriver, and if that thing isn't accessible, then i dunno what is. Granted you *will* need sighted help to access the menus, but once you do, you can operate it like any other mp3 player. Plus if you can get rockbox installed on other models like the h140 or h340 series, that makes it accessible as well. So, gotta agree with Nick here, what utter bullshit. Hi. My model has a capacity of 1 gb, and for the IFP models that's the maximum since they're flash based. Other Iriver models have a hard drive in them, but the IFP models are flash based as I said. I have an Iriver IFP799 which differs slightly cosmetically from the 899 but functionally is the same. It is quite accessible if one is willing to do some menu memorization or write a cheat sheet. I do hope however that Rock Box ultimately works on this thing as my memory sure ain't what it used to be. There are lots of others that one could consider, and I'll just say these two happen to be my personal favorites because I own and use both of them regularly. - Original Message - From: Tate Luck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC audio discussion list. The thing with the Ipod is the Itunes software which isn't real accessible without paying for scripts. Also, if you were going to put Rockbox on, you would lose the ability to play stuff purchased on the Itunes store and other formats Apple put in it. - Original Message - From: Terese Ann Goren [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2006 9:32 AM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today I agree. Hi Brent, you don't need iTunes at all, if you use Anapod. you have to buy Anapod, which has 3 different prices. They are $20.00, $25.00, and $30.00. The $30.00 one will work with all iPods. Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today
Hi Jed, I am also new to ipods and all the ways to download music. I am more than willing to share what I know, but may not use exactly the right terms. If any more experienced users want to jump in and help out, thank you much. I have an ipod mini. I purchased scripts in hopes of making itunes more user friendly. I'm not sure at this point if it is my own lack of patience or what appears to be hoop jumping to get the simplest thing accomplished. I have set the scripts aside for a while. Anapod, on the otherhand, has allowed me to paste files into my mini using a windows-type interface. I set up a folder called Music Collection. In this folder, I am organizing all my cd's. When I find a song that I want to add to my ipod, I hit alt f, arrow down until I hear windows Ipod, and then hit return. The song is then added to my mini. I'm assuming adding the song through windows ipod is from Anapod. It may not sound like much, but I have had this mini for well over a year and had to depend on a sighted friend for help. Since he thinks the only way to download and manage music is through itunes, he wasn't very helpful about helping me think of alternative ways to do things. I have nearly 10,000 songs that I am organizing. I do need him to get some of my music out of itunes. If he even thinks about fixing things for me, Pluto (the former planet of) will be his next stop! I do appreciate it when people help, but last time he put all of my music into itunes where I couldn't do anything with it. I'll probably back everything up before I let him near the machine. Hope this helped. this sounds fantastic and all around supurb. Now, if one of you nice people has $299 or $349 to buy one, you got more money than me. Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today
I wonder if the digisette players would be the best, most accessible thing out? I heard once you navigate it to the proper file, you just pop it in a tape deck and press play. I thought I heard you could record in mp3 from it too, doubt you'd get CD quality sound out of that old tape machine this way though. I want something to load up podcasts and other longer shows to take with and sometimes play on the stereo. Are these worth it for the price, and will it sound good using it in the tape deck on the stereo? It'd be convenient, but I'm not sure on the quality. - Original Message - From: Jack Conti [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 7:41 AM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today Nick I have a couple of questions. 1. how expensive is the iaudio x5 and, 2. how much deos it hold. 3. how do you know what tune you are looking for in other words how do you know where you are in the menuis? thanks in advance. Andr,e the lossless vorbis format is called Flac, though I'm hearing that WavPack is better, and it's also open source. Why it isn't used more than mp3, maybe because the public seem to flock to closed up formats. People like Apple don't seem to want anything to do with Vorbis, and mp3 seems to have the name recognition. Number one it is about $399, i believe. number two, it holds about 40 Gigs of music, I believe for that price. Number three, you can download a utility, if you are using Rockbox on it, to record directory and file name voices for rockbox. - Original Message - From: Jack Conti [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 8:41 AM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today Nick I have a couple of questions. 1. how expensive is the iaudio x5 and, 2. how much deos it hold. 3. how do you know what tune you are looking for in other words how do you know where you are in the menuis? thanks in advance. There are lots of others that one could consider, and I'll just say these two happen to be my personal favorites because I own and use both of them regularly. - Original Message - From: Tate Luck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC audio discussion list. Hi Terese and all, I feel the Milestone is overpriced for its limited feature set. Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today
That certainly is understandable. If you can find a Creative Labs Nuvo I think there is a chance that you can get one for $100 or less, and they are fairly accessible. There may be others, but I will admit to not knowing about the newest MP3 players in the less expensive market just because I haven't had the reason to look at them lately. Maybe I need to shop around a little and see what is available. The olympus WS320M that I mentioned is also available as WS300M with 256 megabytes of memory for around $150 and it plays both MP3 and WMA, it records in WMA. - Original Message - From: Chris Skarstad [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 3:01 AM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today : this sounds fantastic and all around : supurb. What about Non-protected WMA support? I sort of don't like the idea of recompressing these into mp3. Once I accidentally chose the wrong processing in Goldwave demo trying to convert one to wav and converted it to another wma at the same bit rate. Boy did I ever notice the sound quality degradation. - Original Message - From: Darrell Shandrow [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 6:34 PM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today Hi Terese and all, I feel the Milestone is overpriced for its limited feature set. Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today
Book Port list price is $399 from American Printing House for the Blind www.aph.org. The Olympus w WS320m is around $200 and can be purchased through places like Amazon.com. Prices on the WS320M will be different from place to place, but it is readily available on the web, and some office supply and electronics stores probably also carry the Olympus. - Original Message - From: Tate Luck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'PC audio discussion list. Hi Nick. I sure would be interested in a voice walkthrough of this product. Sweet that Rockbox supports it but I'd like to know how it operates and how easy it is to navigate. An example is while recording. When you pause several times, how do you know if it is paused or not. How many steps does it take to do a quick voice recording? What is the navigation method for menus. - Original Message - From: Nick G [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 7:27 PM Subject: Re: If you had to buy a mp3 player today I, personally, would by the IAUdio X5 from www.cowonamerica.com.
