RE: accessible MP3 players

2010-04-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure what manual you get with the player, but I assume it would be
the Rockbox manual for that player. Even if it isn't, you can get the
Rockbox manual from the Rockbox site, rockbox.org. I find these manuals to
be pretty good. They're complete, written so they're accessible by the blind
and provide a description of the physical layout of the player.

 Hello PC-audio friends,

Accessible Electronics offers 5 MP3 players that are
completely voice output accessible to the blind. The units are all
under one hundred dollars. They all have a built in FM radio, which
can record internally, a built in microphone, in case you want to
record a lecture, and they all play a variety of formats, from MP3,
to even CD audio. The web site is: www.accessibleelectronics.com
There is a link on the site for an audio demo. You'll hear Laz Mesa,
who is blind, operate one of the players, and you'll hear the
synthetic voice announce all menu options. Hope this helps.

RE: accessible MP3 players

2010-04-18 Thread Laz Mesa
It's the Rockbox manual for that particular model.

A lot of people find the Rockbox manual to be not so blind friendly as
you stated. It's fine also if you can muddle your way through the
geek-speak, which again, there are some people who would have a hard
time getting through. This is one of the main reasons that I offer
the free tech support for anyone who purchases a player from us. The
PDF manuals could stand to be a bit blind friendlier.

The funniest thing is that when you use Adobe Reader to convert it to
a text file, it never comes out right. For example, either you end up
with one word per line, the text on some pages is all mushed up
together, or any words with the letters fi in them are missing those
letters, as in file becomes le. These are instances which have
been described to me by customers trying to read these PDF manuals via
Adobe Reader.

Hi Joanne,

The guides are right on the player itself. The Quick-Start Guide is
in text format, so you can open it up with Notepad or any word
processor. The Rockbox Manual is in PDF and one needs Adobe Reader to
view it. Don't forget that you also get free tech support for any
questions or problems you may encounter.

Regards,

Re: accessible MP3 players

2010-04-16 Thread Laz Mesa
Hi Casey,

Glenna ordered the Fuze. The way to get it to speak right out of the
box is to plug the earphones in and turn it on. If it doesn't speak
after about 5 or so seconds, it most likely just needs a reset, which
is accomplished by holding the power button in the on position for 15
seconds and then letting it go. Simple as that. Of course you also
get the free tech support and the 90-day replacement warranty in case
something doesn't work right.

Regards,

Laz

Sorry, Windows users, I do not know how to use Itunes under your

Where did you find the DS 50 in Edmonton? I'm in Edmonton. I would prefer
to buy locally.

Olympus DS-50 will do the trick real nicely, and any of the PDAs
  using
MobileSpeak Pocket speech software will work great. These are
  probably
  the
easiest to lay your hands onto.

You might want to try the Edmonton distributer in Canada, otherwise,
 their's
a distributer in Ontario that sells it, or you can get it from online

You might want to try the Edmonton distributer in Canada, otherwise,
 their's
a distributer in Ontario that sells it, or you can get it from online
 places.

ON the subject of the ds50, where can you get one in Canada? I'm
here in Ontario, and I've called around to various stores, and it
seems that none of them seem to have heard of the product.

Olympus DS-50 will do the trick real nicely, and any of the PDAs
  using
MobileSpeak Pocket speech software will work great. These are
  probably
  the

Does anyone know of a high quality, high capacity MP3 player which one can
scan through folders and files similar to an Explorer interface? I
 realize
that this is not totally an accessible solution but it's better than
anything I have seen to date.

I've looked at the bookport but the quality of the playback is not that
great. Another problem is that the Bookport will not play WMA with, or
 without DRM.

 Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks all over the place gang.

Hello there.
How do you transfer files back and forth with the unit? Can you see it
as a standard external drive and use windows explorer to send your mp3s
or you are stuck with horible creative software?
Also, does it have dedicated buttons for play, stop, pause, up and down
etc?

Thanks

I have found the Creative Zen Nano 1 GB flash memmory to be fairly
accessible. Other than for getting into the menu for other options if
you only want to play MP3, Audible books, WMA and WMA/DRM (digital
rights
management) this unit hold a place marker in the file you are listening
too.

This unit has an FM radio and you have to get into the menu to get to
the radio--and I haven't found an easy way to do that.

Sound quality is great!

Found mine at Walmart.

Paid $149.95.

Are there any high quality belt worn MP3 players out that actually have

ACCESSIBLE MP3 PLAYERS

2005-07-30 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

I realise this question has been asked many times before, but I need some
current info.

I am looking for an accessible MP3 player with good sound quality. It must
also have a reasonably large storage capacity.

I realise that with todays menu-driven units nothing is completely
accessible, but what is the best options regarding MP3 players that are
presently available on the market?

Also - and this is just out of curiosity - do all these small MP3 players
have the same sound quality?

Regards

Andre

Re: ACCESSIBLE MP3 PLAYERS

2005-07-30 Thread Yardbird
Hi,

The only .mp3 player I use is the very rudimentary and small capacity MuVo
from Creative Labs, which I got as part of a subscription package from
audible.com, an online digital audio book vendor. This isn't likely to suit
your needs, if only because its flash memory capacity is only 128 Mb.

But as far as audio quality goes, this isn't something like home stereo
equipment, where products can differ vastly in their ability to produce good
sound. From my experience, as well as from every consumer article I've read
in various places, including the New York times tech news section, the
circuitry of these devices is pretty uniform in design and manufacturing
quality, and thus essentially transparent. What will matter most to your
ears will be how the compressed file is encoded and then, assuming that as a
constant in terms of source quality, the most important link in this short
chain will be the acoustic properties of whatever headphones you choose to
use with the device, including their sensitivity rating. Which matters here
because the higher the sensitivity rating, the less battery power and the
less amplifier power will be required to drive them to acceptable volume
levels, increasing battery life and reducing distortion from having to turn
the little amp up too high.

All that said, ordinary ear buds like those offered by Sony and other
companies will probably suffice quite well if you're mostly playing popular
music to exercise by or something like that. If your mobile listening
tastes run to more sonically complex music with a broader dynamic range, as
in classical music, then better headphones would make an appreciable and
audible difference.

Hope this helps.
