using two sound cards

2006-01-25 Thread josh n rivera
Hello friends,
>From time to time I've seen messages from those of you who are using two
sound cards, the on-board sound card for your speech, and the regular
sound card, the one in to which your speakers are plugged for other
sounds. My question is, how does one acomplish this. At present I do
have an on-board sound card as a part of my mother board, but it is
disabled, so I am using my Turtlebeach Santa Cruz card for both speech
and other sounds. I'm thinking I might get better responsiveness out of
my screen reader if I split the duties. Thanks in advance for your help.

Using two sound cards

2013-10-15 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos
Can I use an external USB sound card on my laptop?

If yes, can you recommend a few that do work and possibly require only the
driver to be installed unless one of these USB cards software is useable please
let me know.

Thank you.

Hello josh,

On Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 2:30:37 PM, you bellowed the following:
> how does one acomplish this.

Well, I have two computers with three sound cards each, going into my
16-channel desk for a bunch of routing options.
Anyway, you accomplish this by redirecting programs to go across a
non-default sound card.
Most audio programs will do this, including winamp, goldwave, sound
forge, windows media player, and any *real* (not to be confused with real
player) audio applications.
Real player has yet to do anything about this although winamp has been doing
this since 1998, and even Windows Media Player allows you to change
the output device now.

If you're using jaws, there is a way to get HellOfQuence to go across a
preferred audio device (if that's the synthesizer you're using.) Hal has
this ability as well, but I'm not sure how Window-eyes handles it.

I don't know if that assumption is correct, especially with a
multi-channel sound card like the one you have. There are reasons
why enabling a second soundcard for your screenreader makes sense,
like if you were using your pc to record and you wanted to keep the
speech out of the stream you are recording, but your screenreader
won't run any better by enabling your onboard soundcard while running
the turtlebeach.

Re: using two sound cards

2006-01-26 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Josh and Matthew,

If your using JAWS and Eloquence, there's an easier way to accomplish this,
which does NOT require sighted assistance.

In the JAWS program folder, find and open the jfw.ini file. Fine the section
labeled
[Synthesizers] In this section, you'll find the following lines, with the
exception of the line I've marked with asterisks:

Synth1Name=eloq
Synth1LongName=Eloquence for JAWS
Synth1Driver=eloq
***Synth1Port=C-Media Wave Device***
Synth2Name=NoSpeech
Synth2LongName=No Speech
Synth2Driver=nospeech
Synth3Name=SAPI 5X
Synth3LongName=SAPI 5
Synth3Driver=sapi5x

Insert the line I marked with asterisks, BUT where I have C-Media Wave
Device, you must substitute the exact name of the sound card you want JAWS
to use, as it appears in the Default Device drop-down, in Control Panel,
Sound and Audio Devices, Audio page. (Be sure that the case and spacing in
the name you substitute is exact, and be sure there are no spaces on either
side of the equals sign.) This forces eloquence to use the named sound card,
regardless of which card is selected as the default device. You can now
select a different card as your default device, and JAWS will still use the
named device.

I don't remember the details of the original issue for which Josh wanted to
know how to use two different sound cards. But hope this will help.

OH! I forgot to mention, after editing and saving the changes to jfw.ini,
you must exit and restart JAWS before they take effect.

Synth1Driver=eloq
***Synth1Port=C-Media Wave Device***
Synth2Name=NoSpeech
Synth2LongName=No Speech
Synth2Driver=nospeech
Synth3Name=SAPI 5X
Synth3LongName=SAPI 5
Synth3Driver=sapi5x

Re: using two sound cards

2006-01-26 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, I don't know if changing this line will allow you to switch between
them at will though. Upon reboot, Jaws uses onboard. If I unload and then
load up Jaws again, it goes to the SB card. When I reboot, it goes to the
onboard, so depending on where I want Jaws, I can control it this way.
Thanks a lot.

Re: using two sound cards

2006-01-26 Thread Tim Grady
Certainly can, and much easier than JFW. After
you enable your onboard soundcard, go to the
sounds settings in control pannel and make your
turtlebeach the default soundcard. Then go into
the window-eyes control pannel and choose the
select synthesizer option.  Choose the
synthesizer you want. Say it is SAPI5. Hit the
tab key and you'll be in a list of SAPI5 engines
to choose from. Hit the tab again and you should
end up in a list of sound cards to choose
from. The list of sound cards will always show
up provided you have more than 1 sound card enabled.

Thanks Tim for the information. Now my next question is, do I need
sighted assistance to enable my on-board sound card? Also, will this
formula you outlined work in Win-98SE?

Yes, you'll need assistance to enable your
onboard sound card because you do that from the
BIOS, and yes the steps will work on whichever platform window-eyes is running.

Who's using two sound cards?

2005-01-27 Thread Dale E. Heltzer
Hi,

I know there have been postings by listers who want to run two sound
cards simultaneously. Until now I wasn't interested in following the
Conversation.

I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz internal sound card; this past weekend,
I bought a Creative MP3Plus USB external card. I can't figure out how to
make them both play and/or record as I wish. I find it hard to believe
that Windows XP (Home) won't allow two simple devices to operate
independently and simultaneously.
Am I wrong?
I'd appreciate some enlightenment.

Thanks.

Hi.

I have a Startech USB sound card that I'm using with my laptop, and it works
great. I had to reformat the PC, and the card worked using the drivers for
Windows 7, nothing extra to install. The cost of the card was quite
reasonable, something like $25. I don't know about other sound cards.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello Matthew,

On Thursday, January 26, 2006, 2:47:12 PM, you bellowed the following:

If you don't have sited assistance around, just jump the bios battery,
which will set everything to defaults anyway.
Most motherboards have a jumper next to the bios battery. Failing that,
just take the battery out and leave it out for a few minutes.

What you can do is create another entry in the INI file using the same
drivers, a different port, and a different long name.
This way, you can switch between sound cards.

Hi Dale,
It will work, and although I'm not running 2 soundcards on my XP machine, I
am on my 98SE machine.
There are other people running 2 cards on their XP machines.
Depending on what you are trying to accomplish,
it may be simple, or more involved.

Re: Who's using two sound cards?

2005-01-28 Thread Howard Traxler
Hi, I am using two sound cards; jaws and computer sounds on the integrated
card and entertainment stuff on the creative plug-in card. I got it to
work twice now but I don't know what I did to make it work.

Problem is, when I boot up, jaws talks through the wrong card. So I just
restart jaws and all's well.

I think my stumbling block was the eloquence driver. The instructions on
the FS site said you must get a particular driver to make jaws switch
cards. But that driver is smaller and two years older than the one that
ships with jaws. So I ignored that instruction. When I finally tried that
old driver, I think that's when it started working.

Good luck.

Howard; The way I have mine set up is to have the onboard intigrated
sound card as my default device and my Creative card as the second
device. This way is the easiest so that your software speech comes
through the default card. You can easily set winamp, media player, etc
to play through your second card. It works for me flawlessly.

Hi Howard,
Sometimes the file that FS makes available is not necessary.
I am running 2 soundcards on a Win98SE machine,
and I did not make any changes to Jaws.
I can have Jaws use either of the cards, and can do the same with the rest
of my audio.
Of course, when I finish building my XP machine,
it may be a whole different story.

RE: Who's using two sound cards?

2005-01-28 Thread David Truong
HI,

With the later versions of jaws, version 5x and above I believe, you don't
need that special driver. It works out of the box as long as you put a
"Synth#Port=SoundDeviceName" without the quotes, statement in the eloquence
section of the Synthesiser driver Section of your jfw.ini file. E.G.
"Synth1Port=SoundMAX Digital Audio" without the quotes. Your desired sound
Device name can be located by going to Control Panel then Sounds and Audio
Devices and then navigating to the audio property sheet and then look at the
list of Sound devices for either the Sound default playback device or sound
default recording device. Note, you don't have to change any of these
settings in sound and audio devices you are just using it to locate your
Sound Device Name so you can tell jaws what sound card it should use.

 Dale! Just go into Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices, get onto
the Audio tab and select your Santa Cruz from the Audio playback, Audio
record and MIDI music playback lists. Now close JAWS and restart it. It
should speak through the Santa Cruz. Now go into WinAmp or whatever other
sound programs you use and select your USB device. You could do the
opposite also. Choose the USB device in Sounds and Audio Devices and choose
the Santa Cruz from within WinAmp etc.

Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-07 Thread Ann
HI everyone,

Is it possible to use two sound cards with Windows XP Home? When I install
my second soundcard, it works beautifully. But, the computers default sound
is now disabled, and does not even show up in control panel or Volume
Control dialogs.

My second card is an older card. In fact, I bought it in 2001, maybe 2002, I
believe, so might a newer card work better. Or, as I suspect, is this a
computer bios issue?

The reason I am wanting to use two sound cards is that I have to use
software speech now, since my old doubletalk internal obviously can't be
used with the new system. And I want to have JFW play through one card, and
have the computer system sounds and other audio play through the other. It
is a little difficult to record such things as streaming audio while JFW is
chattering away.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or advice.

~Ann

Re: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-07 Thread Ann Byrne
 From the JFWlite list, february, 2004

 From: "dennis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

here  yuh go dood.
   Bulletin Type: FAQ
   Product Name: JAWS for Windows
   Version: 4.51
   Category: Synthesizers
   Question:
   I have two sound cards on my computer. How do I make sure JAWS uses
the
   one I want?
   Answer:
   Many JAWS users who also use music or audio production software want
JAWS
   and Eloquence to speak through one sound card, while using the other
for
   their production work. To do this, you need to edit a file called
JFW.ini
   and install the updated Eloquence Speech driver in the accompanying
zip
   file.

   Editing the jfw.ini file:

   1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, browse your hard drive to
the
   currently running version of JAWS and find the jfw.ini file in that
   folder.

   2. Press ENTER to open.

   3. You should find some lines that read:

   Synth1Name=eloq

   Synth1LongName=Eloquence for JAWS

   Synth1Driver=eloq

   The number doesn't matter, it may be 1, 2, or 3, but it must be the
same
   for all entries for Eloquence.

   4. Add the following line after the driver line: Synth1Port=SB Live!
Wave
   Device Of course, you need to make sure that the synth number matches
the
   other lines, so that if the Driver line read:

   Sytn3Driver=eloq

   Then the port line would read:

   Synth3Port=SB Live! Wave Device

   The text after the = sign in the Port line comes from Control
Panel/Sound
   & Multimedia/Audio tab It must be one of the entries that can be
chosen
   for Preferred Playback device.

   5. Save your changes and exit Notepad.

   Now you must install the updated driver.As long as JAWS is running and
   speaking through Eloquence, eloq.jls cannot be simply overwritten when
   unzipping the file. You will need to switch to NoSpeech or MS SAPI to
get
   the eloq.jls to overwrite properly.

   1. Download the file from

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/eloq.zip

2. Unzip the zip file into the root of the active JAWS directory where
you
   made the change to the jfw.ini file.

   3. Restart JAWS and it should now be speaking from the sound card you
   wanted.

   4. If not, make sure the entries are correct in the jfw.ini file and
that
   your sound card is indeed installed correctly. Most audio and music
   production software allows you to select a sound device for it as
well, so
   it can use one sound card while JAWS uses another.

Re: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-07 Thread Ann
Hi,

Thanks for the bulletin. That isn't my main problem, though. My issue seems
to be that, when the second soundcard is installed, it completely overrides
the default to the point where the default doesn't even show up to be
selected. So, it looks as if hte comptuer only has the one soundcard, and
not two.

Re: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-08 Thread Jerry Richer
 Ann! You can certainly use two sound cards with Windows XP Home. As
far as I know, the new sound card will always take over as the default sound
card. Did you look for your original sound card in Control Panel, Sounds
and Audio Devices under the "Audio" tab?

Re: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-08 Thread Ann
Yes, and when the second card is installed,the default sound does not even
show up in control panel audio devices at all. The only device that shows up
is the supposed to be secondary card.

When the second card is removed, the default sound re-appears in device
manager, volume settings, etc.

Re: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-10 Thread Brent Harding
I have tried this method, and it works OK, but I switched back because of
one major flaw. I use a turtle beach montigo as my card I want high quality
sound to go through, and have a good pair of speakers hooked up. I would
like to use the integrated device, called Digital MB, for jaws, and I have a
cheaper pair of speakers hooked to that that I once used with the internal
double talk on my previous system. When I edit the config and fire up jaws,
I get such latency between key presses, probably 2-3 seconds worth, that I
switched all back to the turtle beach for time being. How might I fix this
weird problem so I can run it that way? When jaws is set up in this mode,
and I switch winamp to also use the onboard, the first few seconds of the
song go by before it starts to come through the speaker. I thought that was
only a problem people using multi-track recording got that firewire
interfaces help, but this system has no firewire.

RE: Using two sound cards in XP

2005-10-13 Thread William R. McCann
Hi,

Dancing Dots has documented a strategy for setting up to use two soundcards.
See http://www.dancingdots.com/ctfaq.htm#JFW for the heading that says:
Q: Is it possible to run JFW through my soundcard on my computer while
running my music through my external sound card?

Best wishes from Dancing Dots,
Bill
