I have used it, and it takes some getting used to, but it does work much
better. Still not the best user experience, but it does work well enough. If
you would like, email me privately, with any questions you may have. Good luck!

Good evening all,

Having experienced both the SXM online listening page and the iPhone app I
would definintly conclude
the app is considerably more accessible than the audio streaming website.
However, one has to do a
bit of tweaking to make the app navigable. For one thing, the main menu buttons
at the bottom are
unlabeled as far as Voiceover is concerned, so one does have to create custom
labels which you do
with a 2-finger double tap and hold gesture.
Actifating the categories button enables you to browse the channels, which is
much more than can be
said of the SXM listening webpage. Were it not for the iPhone app I would not
have added internet
radio to my subscription.

Joe and list: Although I basically agree with what Joe is saying, a very
little of XM is somewhat
accessible with Windows XP. Having said that, I wouldn't buy it as I have also

Is it just me? or is this not accessible. I'm not knocking anyone who uses it,

Sirus/XM radio input channel by number in JAWS

2012-11-26 Thread Cooley, Daniel (Law)
I am a user of XM radio and have recently hooked into the internet
functionality. Inputting a station by number seems to be quite a challenge.
Does anyone have any experience successfully navigating through the internet
station inputting process? If so, could you indicate how you locate the correct
input field which appears to be virtually inaccessible with the JAWS screen
reader. Also, could you send me an email (d...@pge.com) or call me at
415.973.6646 so we can discuss further if you've had any success.

I read a review by a blind XM radio enthusiast and he indicated that there were
third party applications that were accessible, but XM last year blocked all
such access and has a flash screen presentation which makes using JAWs
effectively almost impossible since that time. However, all I'm looking for is
a work around to input the channel by numbers. I can get the radio turned on
over the internet. Then one should be able to tab through to the channel input
source, but there is no consistent speech or field that I have been able to
identify to use in locating where to input channel by number.

In response to Kris Hickerson and Sunshine's question asking whether the 800
number stations are accessible through the radio or only through the internet,
it is my understanding that the high number stations including those in the 800
range are only accessible through the internet.

Actually, I think my problem was that I had an outdated version of Tapin Radio
on my Pc, and until this morning, I hadn't tried either Cumulous or Clear
Channel because of my inability to get them previously. That's why I am
grateful to Vitek for mentioning Cumulous and Clear Channel availability on

channel, and I had used iTunes on the iPhone for everything else.

I wish I could answer your question but I have the same problem using Jaws.
Only success I have is on the Mac using Pulsar (no longer supported but still
works sort of) and Radium (another Mac app). There is a SiriusXM app for the
iPhone/Ipad and another called Musicdock. I know of nothing that works in
Windows however.
I do have one question for you though: What radio do you have and how usable is
it for you? I am a total and will probably be in the market for one so any
info appreciated.

RE: Accessibility of playing XM radio over the internet with JAWS13/14

2012-09-30 Thread Rob Tabor
Greetings,

Profanity aside, which has been dealt with by the moderator, I echo the
frustration expressed here with regard not only to the lack of screen reader
friendly interface with the Sirius XM online listening players, but the lack
of concern on the part of its staff and management. For ease of access by
its long-standing loyal customer base. I would invite anyone who is a member
of NFB to participate in drafting a proposed resolution to the 2013 national
convention in Orlando, Florida calling Sirius XM to task and challenging the
company to re-engineer its web-based audio interface to WCAG standards. How
about it folks? Better to light the candle than to curse the darkness, as
the old adage goes.

Not really. If you have a mobile device, you will have better luck
going that route. You have to memorize where stuff is on that. The
web based player is not accessible, beyond logging in, and picking
one channel. After that, it doesn't work really well.

xm is a bunch of bullshit. you might as well go through soutcast or
maybe live 365 if they are still around. the former is free and the
latter is as well if you can put up with their fucking annoying ads

Not really. If you have a mobile device, you will have better luck
going that route. You have to memorize where stuff is on that. The
web based player is not accessible, beyond logging in, and picking
one channel. After that, it doesn't work really well.

Can't seem to get XM Radio Online to play in Firefox 3

2008-08-23 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi folks

The subject line pretty much says it. I've atempted to log into my account at
http://listen.xmradio.com, which I can do just fine. However, when I
launch the player and by either manually typing in a channel number
in the edit box, or arrow down the page and just pressing enter on
the channel number, I don't hear any audio. I know that XM Radio
Online uses Windows Media as it's format for the stream, so I
downloaded and installed The Windows Media plugin for Firefox 3, and
I made sure it was enabled under tools/add-ons.
It is, yet I still don't hear any audio. I do just fine in Internet
explorer 7, but not Firefox 3. Any thoughts?
BTW this doesn't seem to matter what screen-reader I use, I didn't
think that was a factor but that's one of the common questions people
always ask. So I've tried this using JAWS 9.0.2169, Window-eyes 7.0
beta 2, and System Access. Again, any thoughts, suggestions or
ideas would be great!

Thanks.

Hi All...Thought I'd make some comments on this thread.

I'll admit, I haven't been keeping up with the list lately, but seeing
 this
about possible accessible XM radios is very cool...As many of you know,
 I've
been an XM subscriber for almost three years, and would NEVER go back to
using terrestrial radio, but the thought of a more blind-friendly radio
 will
definitely continue to keep me with XM, merger or not.

I've also been an XM411.com member since July of 2004, and can tell you
 it's
a great site. Ziggy and Ed run a great forum, and any time I've had
 issues
navigating something on the site, they've always been happy to
 assist...For
that reason, I'd encourage ANYONE thinking of buying XM products to
 support
Ziggy's store at www.myradiostore.com. Unfortunately, I bought my
 receiver
before I knew about him, and my MyFi was a gift from a friend who works
 for
an electronics retailer, but I can tell you that my next XM receiver
 will
 come from My Radio Store.

Personally, if they're trying to modify a current radio to make it more
accessible, I'd like to see them do the Inno because of its storage
 capacity.

Dear Steve and list,

I have been subscribed to the other party, in the merger, namely Sirius!
They are even more lost, when it comes to accessibility. They used to offer
accessibility, to their service, on line, but, they incorporated a Captcha
feature, in the last six months or so, that is visual and audible (much like
MSN's log in feature) but, they do not seem to have a field, available, to
actually write in the Captcha code, that they give. I have been trying to
get this issue resolved, both recently and back when they first instituted
it, with little or no results. Does the XM site, for on line use, have this
problem? I really wonder if the merger might resolve this?

Re: More on Possible Accessible XM Radio

2007-02-25 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Mac
XM does not have a captcha for logging into their online site. Yes,
i will agree that the Sirius site is more of a bear to use. However,
during my 3 day free trial of the online service, i had little to no
trouble entering the captcha. it's a simple edit field, much like you
would find on other websites.
so, if you use your arrow keys with the pc cursor active, or if you
simply hit the letter e, JAWS will take you to the first edit field
on the page. each successive hit of the letter e takes you to the
next edit field. Even nicer news is that if you buy the Replay A/V
software and want to record something from Sirius online, the program
is smart enough that it can completely bypass the captcha, and will
automatically record for you. So if you want to record anything that
may be a worthwhile investment.

 Dear Steve and list,

I have been subscribed to the other party, in the merger, namely Sirius!
They are even more lost, when it comes to accessibility. They used to
 offer
accessibility, to their service, on line, but, they incorporated a Captcha
feature, in the last six months or so, that is visual and audible (much
 like
MSN's log in feature) but, they do not seem to have a field, available, to
actually write in the Captcha code, that they give. I have been trying to
get this issue resolved, both recently and back when they first instituted
it, with little or no results. Does the XM site, for on line use, have
 this
problem? I really wonder if the merger might resolve this?

 Regards,
 Mac Norins

We've now gotten XM engineering management's attention. They're
working hard to

put a package together to convince XM's upper management how important

blind-friendly radios will be for the 30 million visually impaired
Americans.

Here's the best way to keep up with our progress: Ziggy and Ed have
established

a forum at the

Ed, the whizkid webmaster is working hard to make the website more

Please feel free to post. XM management reads this website.

Wow, I wasn't aware of that feature of Replay! I have been compiling
Petro's great podcasts, on Replay and will definitely purchase, if that
turns out to work! I am going to try to get the audio Captcha numbers or
code into the field, utilizing what you just wrote. Maybe, just maybe, I
will be able to stop pulling out my long hair!

Thanks Much, Chris

Hi if you are having problems with entering the capshua code on the serious
site so you can log in and listen to there internet stream. Try using
mozilla firefox I have heard it will work with that. You can do it with
internet explorer but I heard that firefox will work better with it.

problem? I really wonder if the merger might resolve this?

Its a very accessible radio, which can be used on the road, or as a
 receiver.
At 04:03 PM 02/25/2007, you wrote:
What is that? I hope it is not an I tunes or I pod or portable, as I want
a
home unit, that I can run through my receiver/power amp, but, that is not
the subject we were talking about, rather, at least, I was talking about
access to the lineup, on line! To me, a stiletto is a knife, not a radio!

Thanks,
I got logged in, but, I still cannot seem to get the player to start up! It
has been so long since I got it to work, that I have almost forgotten how to
program in the channel numbers!! In addition, the flash player, or some
Java script, is/are giving me trouble, making the page work very slowly, in
JAWS 8.0! Any ideas on what to do, about that?

I just get very frustrated with this expensive service! I have the
Sportster boombox, which works adequately!

2007-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
Hi All...Thought I'd make some comments on this thread.

I'll admit, I haven't been keeping up with the list lately, but seeing this
about possible accessible XM radios is very cool...As many of you know, I've
been an XM subscriber for almost three years, and would NEVER go back to
using terrestrial radio, but the thought of a more blind-friendly radio will
definitely continue to keep me with XM, merger or not.

I've also been an XM411.com member since July of 2004, and can tell you it's
a great site. Ziggy and Ed run a great forum, and any time I've had issues
navigating something on the site, they've always been happy to assist...For
that reason, I'd encourage ANYONE thinking of buying XM products to support
Ziggy's store at www.myradiostore.com. Unfortunately, I bought my receiver
before I knew about him, and my MyFi was a gift from a friend who works for
an electronics retailer, but I can tell you that my next XM receiver will
come from My Radio Store.

Personally, if they're trying to modify a current radio to make it more
accessible, I'd like to see them do the Inno because of its storage
capacity.

Subject: Re: More on Possible Accessible XM Radio

Unfortunately, I bought my
 receiver
before I knew about him, and my MyFi was a gift from a friend who works
 for
an electronics retailer, but I can tell you that my next XM receiver will
 come from My Radio Store.

Personally, if they're trying to modify a current radio to make it more
accessible, I'd like to see them do the Inno because of its storage
 capacity.

We've now gotten XM engineering management's attention. They're
working hard to

put a package together to convince XM's upper management how important

blind-friendly radios will be for the 30 million visually impaired
Americans.

Here's the best way to keep up with our progress: Ziggy and Ed have
established

a forum at the
www.xm411.com
  user forum.

http://www.xm411.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=30236

Ed, the whizkid webmaster is working hard to make the website more
accessible to

the visually impaired.

Please feel free to post. XM management reads this website.

Best Regards,

Ralph

Bruce, how do you listen to internet radio with winamp without going
through the media library? Especially XM stations?

There should be a distiction made between being able to listen to
Internet
radio, which is perfectly doable with Winamp 5.23 (the final release
version is out), and using the media library, which is apparently tricky

to do. Since I don't use the library, this is not an issue to me.

There is definitely a difference between the receivers that hook directly
into your stereo, as opposed to the ones that you tune your FM radio dial to
receive the XM radio. I would base it on a comparison of audio tapes to
CD's. That's how much difference there is between those two, at least to
me.

the quality on my home stereo unit, so everyone's ears are different.

Hi. I think you may be slightly exagerating your comments. Sure,
there's some high end loss but not enough to make the station
unlistenable. If you have a decent pair of stereo speakers the sound
is quite acceptable. You should also be aware that any new radio
station can possibly have teathing problems. I heard a commercial
station in Australia in 1980 which came on the air and because their
limiter wasn't working properly they had to keep adjusting the sound to
compensate. Foor goodness sake, give Jonathan a fair go and remember
where some of you got your start in broadcasting. If he hadn't started

hi. I've noticed the *exact* same thing, and I know of 2 or 3 other

It's as if there is absolutely no high end on the signal, like an AM

may sound. I'm not in any way complaining about this as I explained to
Jonathan privately, but I wanted to confirm what Dana is saying here.
It's like there's a whole lot of bass, but very little to no high

Let's hope we can track it down very soon!

That's because, after all, FM is only a 15khz audio signal, whereas
thec compact disc spec goes up to 20khz. Ditto the dynamic range
factor--well over 90dB with CD's; less than 80dB with FM radio, even
with the best, least-obnoxious signal processing. Remember, 10dB
difference is really 100 times difference because your ears are
logarithmic, not linear. That's why linear volume controls don't seem
to have much affect at certain points in their travel from softest to
loudest. ... Or have I gotten that backwards?

 Jonathan,

Just tuned in to the kick off party for the Minx. Thought I should let
 you
know that BOTH your streams (Windows Media and MP3) have a very
 unlistenable

fuzzy quality. If I had to guess, I'd say something needs adjusting in
 the
digital modulation of the signal. That could be a totally off-base guess.
But something in your signal quality definitely needs adjusting.

Good luck with the Minx, and hope to hear you sounding much better in the
 very near future.

I have pretty good speakers at home, it was better quality when I first got
it than it is now on the music. Jonathan's stream really sounds a lot better
than XM right now on my computer speakers that I never thought could deliver
as much quality.

I've heard some people say that the quality of XM radio is better than
anything on the internet, but I really couldn't say, as I don't have it. I
haven't as yet gotten an fm transmitter, and I haven't gotten my computer
hooked up to my home stereo, but I'm sure that even with internet radio, if
I could hear it through my Infinity speakers, I'm sure that the sound would
be even much better!

Well now, it all depends on the equipment being
used. If you're using a crappy pare of speakers,
then it'll show. I have a XM MyFi and really
love the quality on my home stereo unit, so everyone's ears are different.

Hi. I think you may be slightly exagerating your comments. Sure, there's
some high end loss but not enough to make the station unlistenable. If you
have a decent pair of stereo speakers the sound is quite acceptable. You
should also be aware that any new radio station can possibly have teathing
problems. I heard a commercial station in Australia in 1980 which came on
the air and because their limiter wasn't working properly they had to keep
adjusting the sound to compensate. Foor goodness sake, give Jonathan a
fair
go and remember where some of you got your start in broadcasting. If he
hadn't started ACB Radio Interactive some of you people who are so quick to
be critical wouldn't be broadcasting today.

hi. I've noticed the *exact* same thing, and I
know of 2 or 3 other people who have noticed it too.
It's as if there is absolutely no high end on the
signal, like an AM radio station might sound, or
something like a 24k or 32k mp3 stream may
sound. I'm not in any way complaining about this
as I explained to Jonathan privately, but I
wanted to confirm what Dana is saying here.
It's like there's a whole lot of bass, but very little to no high
frequencies.
Let's hope we can track it down very soon!

 Hi,
I was reading about XM Radio's Online service, and was wondering if
anyone's tried it yet? I'm thinking about signing up for the trial, but am
wondering how accessible the system is. Alternatively, is it a good idea
to
install WinAmp 5.1 (I'd install it in another folder, rather than over the
current version) to listen to the service that way? If yes, does the trial
limitation of 3 days still apply?
 Thanks.

When that happens, a new browser window comes up. From there, at the

 channels.
Next, I was able to press the e key which brings you to the quick tune
 edit
box and I just typed in a channel number, 22 for example. then I pressed
enter and in a few seconds the station started playing, no problems.
note that you can also arrow down the page and when you're focused on a
channel number, it's considered a link even though JAWS doesn't report
 it
as one. But if you press enter on a channel number in the list, you can
also get the stations to play that way as well. if you still can't get
 the
stations to play, you may not have windows media player 10 installed. I
believe xm radio online needs to have either version 9 or 10 installed
 for
 it to work.

Re: Playing XM Radio Online

2005-09-19 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi
This information is very easy to find. Now remember folks, this is for the
*online* version of the player only.

When you log in,look near the top of the page. There's a link that says
what's on now, so press enter on that. Now at first glance it's going to
look like that didn't do any good, but arrow down until you see each
individual channel listing. Below the channel name, you'll see the current
song like this:
5
THE 50s
The Four Coins
Shangri-La
Decades
Add channel 5 to your Presets
6
THE 60s
Sam Cooke
Good Times
Decades
Add channel 6 to your Presets
7
THE 70s
Sweet
Love Is Like Oxygen
Decades
and so on. and obviously if you'd like to add a channel to your presets
you would press the appropriate link. and there's a presets link near the
top of the page as well. Just do a bit of exploring and experimentation.
All the info is right there if you're willing to do a bit of looking around.

Re: Playing XM Radio Online

2005-09-19 Thread Brent Harding
No, heard on either xmfan.com or xm411.com that some guy took some gear
apart and made his own rig out of it. He must've taken the xm module out of
something like a PCR, another not made product any more, and built up
something new with a new interface, that among other improvements, would
have speech. Even if he publishes plans for such a device, don't know anyone
skilled enough to put it together. The talking idea is good for the sighted
too, however. It would make driving safer so they don't have to look at the
display when they're curious about what's on. And for us, it would allow us
to know what's on.

Is there such a thing as a talking skyfi?

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/18/2005 10:36:01 PM
Maybe I used a different one then, I think whatever I used, I had to
 use the
edit box, but the list would say the title of the tune. I wish I could
 buy a
talking skyfi for those times when one uses that for listening and
 finds a
tune that's good, but not familiar.

I used to use xmstreamer, or something like that. It was real
 accessible,
haven't got it back on here. Something on xmmobile.com or

something like that, I might give this one a try. I don't get why
 they
 can't
broadcast the talk stuff, since it is a subscriber service, even
 Sirius
probably could if they make it for receiver subscribers only, which
 they
 do,
but XM you need no radio to get the stream.

The only addition I would make is that I find it necessary, at least when using
Jaws with the XM online player, to use the Insert+Escape command to update the
screen to reflect the correct title and artist information every time the song
changes.

I heard so. AOL is now their online partner, doing all the streaming stuff.
More and more things xm's been doing lately are making me think of switching
to Sirius instead. They got rid of one of my favorite channels lately,
discovery radio. I suppose to make room for that Take 5 or whatever channel
it is, and NHL now.

I have been working with both Xstreamer and XModule.
Both programs seem to work, but appear to have no direct keyboard access, at
least none that I could locate.
With Xstreamer, you can arrow up and down the dozens of channels just fine,
but pressing enter does not initiate the stream, you must double click with
mouse keys.
I could not get XModule to work quite as well, but once again, double
clicking was necessary on a channel number to start a stream playing.

The newest version of xmodule has some more keyboard functionality. I agree
more needs to be added. It's at version 1.1

I have been working with both Xstreamer and XModule.
Both programs seem to work, but appear to have no direct keyboard access,
 at
least none that I could locate.
With Xstreamer, you can arrow up and down the dozens of channels just
 fine,
but pressing enter does not initiate the stream, you must double click
 with
 mouse keys.
I could not get XModule to work quite as well, but once again, double
clicking was necessary on a channel number to start a stream playing.

I used to use xmstreamer, or something like that. It was real accessible,
haven't got it back on here. Something on xmmobile.com or xmstreamer.com
 or
something like that, I might give this one a try. I don't get why they
 can't
broadcast the talk stuff, since it is a subscriber service, even Sirius
probably could if they make it for receiver subscribers only, which they
 do,
but XM you need no radio to get the stream.

It's mostly accessible, but can be made a bit more so through use of

Next, I was able to press the e key which brings you to the quick tune

 pressed
enter and in a few seconds the station started playing, no problems.
note that you can also arrow down the page and when you're focused on a

I have an xm radio account for online so I can listen to it online. I log in

Re: the xm radio online service and getting it to play

2005-06-10 Thread Susan Wojtecki

Casey,
Have you ever gotten the stations to play at all? Sometimes they seem to
take a long time to load, not sure if this is net congestion or what, and i
really haven't found a way around it except to try different stations and
come back to the one later that caused problems. I think they suggest a
reboot when the load is slow but can't say for sure if this makes a
difference. Sorry I can't help much, but I'm pretty sure the problem is on
their end.

Re: xm radio online very accessible!

2005-04-27 Thread Geoff Eden
It's a little more subtle than that, while broadcasters are assessed a fee
against their subscription base, assessments are also made to support a native
culture channel, the radio reading service channel, and other specialty
channels for arts culture, and parliamentary broadcasting. It has a good deal
to do with trying to preserve a Canadian character in home broadcasting in the
face of the juggernaut to the south, which also sucks up nearly all of
available revenue from commercials. We have nearly full time captioning, and
have begun with 2 hours per week in prime time of DVS on some channels which
will increase to 4 hours soon.

Hi. Actually, a few of the talk and comedy channels are included as well.
You get XM Comedy 150,and High Voltage 202 featuring Opie Anthony.
Note that channel blocking isn't available on the online service, so if one
of the channels offends you, simply turn it off and go onto something else.

hi
This is kind of true, kind of not. if you are a current XM Radio
subscriber, then yes, it *is* free.
However, if you are not currently an xm radio subscriber, you can purchase
a subscription for xm radio online for $7.99 a month I believe it is. Or
you can become a regular subscriber for $12.99 and get a regular radio and
you can then enter your radio ID and get a free subscription that way.

Re: xm radio online very accessible!

2005-04-19 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi
You don't download it. it's a regular internet radio stream, much like the
others available out there, accept not all of the channels are streamed,
and there are channels available online that aren't available on the
satellites, and the reverse is true for the satellites as opposed to
online. So to get all the channels, you have to have both the satellite
radio and the online service.
. A subscription to xm radio online is free if you're a current xm
subscriber, and if you're not, it's $7.99 a month.
You can also get a free 3 day trial if you're not a subscriber and give it
a try. note that you should disable your popup blocker though, because
that's how these channels and controls are displayed.

Satellite radio for me is the best entertainment buy I've ever made.
Nothing on AM or FM even comesclose.

Having a chance to tap into 60 commercial free music styles, plus over 3
dozen talk formats is a real eye-opener.

I spent $50 for one radio, and $49 for the other one.
Not much room for prices to come down if one doesn't want a fancy
model--and they all do basically the same thing, with or without the extra
bells and whistles.

And prices will be going up on XM in April.

XM Radio

2005-01-09 Thread Jardata_Mail_Services
Hello List!

I recently signed up for the XM Radio Online Service. I have been able to play
a few stations online, but for the most part, it is a hit and miss proposition.
I emailed XM Radio with my complaints and asked them for a better way of
accessing their stations online. They say they are committed to helping all
of their customers and want their service to work for us all. I have one of
their receivers and boombox setups and the radio works fine, except for a
periodic satellite-reaching problem. I'm in an apartment and sometimes I lost
signal when the antenna falls or someone walks across the signal in another
oom. They could bet a better antenna for those radios. It would also be good
if they had a Direct TV type setup and we could use Direct TV or Dish dishes to
run our radios. I hear it works fine in cars. Maybe they have small dishes on
cars. The home system antenna does not have a dish, just a long antenna.

What is wrong with just having buttons or links that work upon pressing the
enter key or pressing the spacebar to reach a station or stream. They can
still have this linked to security password and user name set up. Or they
could offer a text only version for those who use screen readers (as a separate
page); then we could go there first and then have the links list right in front
of us and could click on anyone we please. There is only 65 or so choices.
I'm sure someone on this list would be glad to help them out along these lines.

I haven't tried the other service, but you must have a radio to have access to
their streams. I hear their streams are free to radio subscribers. XM Radio
should try this too. Or the other service should change their policy and make
their internet streams available for subscription alone.
