Re: Enable Shmenable. grin. Mint KX in my paws.

2001-06-20 Thread Bill Gekas

Hi there Lon,
I have to agree with you here with the KX, I picked up a Black KX in mint
condition last year. When I took it for a CLA the local repair guy said he's
never seen such a nice example of a KX, it hadn't even had a CLA before. All
mechanical, match needle metering, DOF, MLU self timer and they take common
LR44 batteries for the meter. They are very nice cameras although I still
seem to be using the K1000 and KM 99% of the time in fear of brassing that
black beauty. I have both the 55K1.8 and the 50K1.4. The 55 K1.8 is a fine
lens indeed, but I'll agree with Mark in that the 50 K 1.4 absolutely ROCKS.
:)

Cheers,

Bill Gekas

Thar's been a powerful amount of chat here
recently about 1/6000 with synch and titanium
coating, and multi-point autofocus and enabling
to the tune of 900 bucks.

Well, folks, to heck with it. Just got an absolutely
_mint_ KX with 1.8 55mm K lens. They say the MX is
better. Surely they lie. They say the LX is better.
 Surely they lie.

The KX is what God intended cameras to be.

BTW, the feel of that 55mm K lens is very nice, too.
Guess I'd better stop pawing over A and M lenses and
just gussy myself up with some sweet ole K's.

We are all enabled in our own ways, some to the tune
of 800 bucks, some to the tune of 150 bucks.

So where's a macro shot that requires mirror lockup,
 dammit? Gimme one NOW.

lol. Who else has one of these puppies?

Hugo, were the films processed by the same lab? I routinely develop

  magenta or yellow casts.
Here's another track: were you shooting on Elitechrome and
comparing directly to Velvia? Besides these being two very different
beasts, Elitechromes tend to render more bluish winter sceneries.

HK Are Pentax lenses usually cooler or more blue/magenta than other
HK brands?

I'd say my Pentax glass is more neutral than my yellowish Tamron,
but the difference is not that big to strike me the way you felt.

HK Is this still the case for the modern AF lenses or only for the older
HK Manual focus lenses?

There was once a thread here discussing differences in colour of
reflections between various lens generations. While older lenses
reflections were more consistent, recent FA lenses reflection
colours are all over the spectrum. It appears that Pentax varies
the lens SMC coatings to compensate for specific glass colour in
order to get a more neutral final image.

RE: Colour-presentation of Pentax lenses compared to Other Brands

2001-06-20 Thread Jostein Oksne

I remember there was a long thread on one of the rec.photo groups some five
years ago on this topic. Then, however, the observations went the other way
round; Pentax was claimed to be the winner of colour rendition.

As others have said there are many other factors that can affect colour
rendition. I'll add my share:

Hardangervidda is a mountain plateau some 1000m ASL. There's more UV light
up there (personal experience), and the snow doesn't make that any better.
Maybe there is a difference between makes in the UV transparency of the
multicoating?

There are differences between films in UV sensitivity too. Are you sure you
took the same motifs with the same films?

You shot with an MX. I have been to Hardangervidda (and other mountain areas
in Norway) with both a P50, MX, LX and Z-1 under similar conditions of snow
and bright lights. My experience is that the MX light meter handle this
situation poorly. It tends to underexpose scenes with snow, and it also
seems to have the most temperature- and humidity-sensitive meter of the
four. Note that both the P50 and the LX also have centre-weight meters, but
with other technology than the MX.

 From: Hugo Kok [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

My main question is centered around the colour rendition of Pentax
lenses as compared to other brands. Are there members in this
 group who
are using or have been using 35 mm SLR's of other brands in such a
manner that they can more or less objectively make a
 comparison between
the way lenses of both (or more) brands bring forth colours? More
specifically, are there members who are able to testify that
 there is a
'common' differentiation between lenses of Cannon, Nikon, Minolta,
Sigma, Cosina, Tamron, Panagor, etc.? I mean, in such a way that one
can say: brand X has a warm (yellow/red) presentation as compared to
brand Y which has a cool (blueish) presentation?

I'll try to explain the context of my question. Recently I
 have been to
Norway for a week trekking with some friends on the Hardanger Vidda -
water, snow, water, tundra and water (the water part was our fault:
wrong time of the season). One of those friends is a
'photography-buddy' of mine for more than 3 years and he shoots with
Cannon FD lenses (EF camera). We do enjoy watching each others slides
every +/- 2 weeks which contain pictures about virtually EVERYTHING
that is crossing our camera's. It doesn't happen too often that we are
both shooting extensively the same subjects and objects. Now this week
in Norway we did. Films used were Fuji Velvia and Kodak Elitechrome II
(and two Extra Colour Elitechromes). Lenses used were on the FD side:
 50mm/1.4, 28mm/2.0, 17mm/3,5 Tokina and 135mm/2.8 Panagor handled with
a EF camera and on the Pentax side: 50mm/1.4A, 40mm/2.8 pancake and
 85/1.8 K and 135mm/2.5 K on a MX camera.

Films came back and actually for the first time it struck me how
different our two photo-systems were. It was as if we had been to two
different places, so much the colours differed. When so directly
comparing I can say that my impression is that Pentax lenses are cool,
blue-ish or on the VERY neutral side of the colour spectrum, while the
Cannon FD lenses have a more pleasing warm presentation. I
 use the word
'pleasing' because such was the subjective experience of the whole
group of us who went to Norway and saw the slides - but it was my own
impression too, maybe even more so than the others. If I have to give
my opinion I have to admit that my slides were too
 blue/magenta and his
were on the yellow/red side. When you ask me honestly what to think of
it I think his pictures were better in terms of colour and contrast.
Normally I think my Pentax lenses give a more 'realistic' presentation
than the FD's, and certainly the truth is somewhere in
 between, but for
now I feel that my last series of slides are way too
 cool/blue/magenta.

At this point I would like to know if this sort of impressions about
colour are shared by more of my group members. Not with the aim to
conclude which brand is best but more to place Pentax on a comparative
 colour-map.

Is there anybody listening who can attest to above described
 phenomena?
Are Pentax lenses usually cooler or more blue/magenta than other
 brands?
Is this still the case for the modern AF lenses or only for the older
 Manual focus lenses?

Any comments are welcome, but please enlighten me.

 Thanks, Hugo

Hi all,

there have NO filters been used, just plain camera + lens. Yhe
Hardanger Vidda is on 1100-1300 meter height, so there could be a
warrant to use skylight. But then again, the results between our two

It's true that I didn't notice this before and I do realize that the

By the way, what does a skylight filter do exactly and when is the use

that Pentax lenses were coated enough just to leave them be...

Thanks for reactions so far,

Still unpacking...

2001-06-20 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi everyone,

Well we are almost done unpacking, I had to stop to get some dental work done.
But I am trying to keep up with the messages.. only about 420 to go.. LOL...

Anyhow, my sister has been unpacking her place and she found the camera I told
ya'll about a few months ago. I am so very excited about it. It needs some
cleaning
on the outside but a friend of mine who knows alot about cameras looked at
it and
said that it was beautiful inside. And I have to agree with him cause I was
sitting
there looking at it with him and there is not a speck of dust or corrosion
anywhere
on this camera... (I am very grateful that she took out the battery before
she packed it away)
except for the carrying strap. It is pretty old leather and I will
most definately have to replace it.

OK so.. here is what my sister, handed over to me...

ASAHI Pentax
on top it has these numbers 5766776 SP 1000
it is a screw mount camera and she so far has only found
this one lens. which all this time since about .. hmmm 1980 or so
has been put up.. it had a filter on it that when she first showed
it to me I thought oh no.. (I didnt realize it had a filter) its
ruined.. but when she took off the filter the lens on the inside
is beautiful.. it is a SMC TAkumar 1:2/55 Asahi OPT. CO., Japan.
When looking through this lens it has a circle in the center for focusing,
it is really neat. And when you move the f stops you can actually see
in the view finder it lightening and darkening.
I ran a roll of film through it but I have not gotten them back yet.
I cant wait to see how they turn out.

Well back to unpacking..

$125 is a bit steep. I paid $119 through KEH. You might try to talk them down a

focusing combined with the lens's focusing allows you to get very close; good
for macro work. Also 1.7x is a nice compromise between 1.4x and 2x.

Re: Still unpacking...

2001-06-20 Thread Peter Alling

You should be able to change the f-stops with out darkening the view in the
view finder. Check to see if the meter switch on the left hand side of the
body is always in the on position, or if not that the auto manual switch on
the lens
is set to manual. You will have to meter stopped down but the lens
diaphragm should
reopen after the shutter fires, (the meter switch turns itself off to save
batteries).

These are great cameras by the way. Due to their inherent simplicity and
very good
build I would expect one to last nearly forever as any mechanical system
will.

Using one will also teach you a lot about light and DOF.

A skylight filter is essentially a UV filter with a slight (and hard to see)
tint toward the red. Many folks (not me) use them as a protective cover for
a lens as some would use a UV filter. The filter is often useful at midday
and when there is some haze or other condition where the scene has an
unwanted cold cast. The effect is sometimes too subtle for the eye to
recognize as our eyes (brain) adjust, but the film sees it. My bet is a
subtle difference in development, most likely temperature.

Yes, I think $125 is not unreasonable ...

I bought mine off Rob Studdert. I have an A series 50mm stuck on it
permanently, and it makes a wonderful AF 85mm lens. Shame is, I very rarely
use any focal lengths around that range so it is under used. When I do use
it, I'm happy with the way it works, and the results it gives.

I have been using the 1.7 converter a lot with the 300mm f/2.8 lately, this makes for
a very
nice 500mm autofocus lens at about f/4.7.
Focusing with the Z1 and MZ-3 is good enough for the sort of wildlife shots I tend to
do.
(you probably will want a good monopod to support this combo!)

The need for pre-focus the manual lens, and let the converter do the rest works
nicely,
but sometimes lets you miss a shot because focus is just out of range and you need to
readjust the manual focus ring.

Still, a very usefull item when you have good MF lenses and also use AF sometimes.

I have also been using the converter to stack onto the 300mm plus 2.0X-L converter.
This yields a manual focus 1000mm lens f/9.5 with reasonable sharpness in the center.

PS: AF focusing works best with lenses of f/2.8 or better.

Re: Colour-presentation of Pentax lenses compared to Other Brands

2001-06-20 Thread Todd Stanley

A skylight filter is a slight warming filter, used to eliminate some of the
blueish cast when shooting outside, especially on overcast days. Many
people leave it on the lens all the time, as a lens protecter. That's why
I wondered if your friend used one.

I still say you need to use the same film, and process at the same lab in
order to compare. Also, a very slight difference in exposure could also
cause this. Compare the light meters. Do you shoot in auto or manual?
(most auto cameras are stepless in auto, while in manual you can only
adjust the exposure in 1/2 or full stop increments). Does he shoot in auto
or manual? Do you have any 3rd party K-mount lenses to compare the Pentax
glass too?

It's true that I didn't notice this before and I do realize that the

By the way, what does a skylight filter do exactly and when is the use

I believe Pentax used fuzzy logic back in the Z-20(?) for program mode.
Anyway, I believe all manufacturers use the way Minolta uses as described
below. No system litterally go thruogh a database of, say, 100 000 pictures
to determine exposure. Also, Pentax have used distance informations for
metering and AF the last ten years and both Minolta and Nikon are newcomers
in this regard.

  Hello
here is the answer a friend of mine wish to tell you about minolta :

  In english with babel :
MINOLTA does not use, as claims it your interlocutor of data base
for
the determination of the expo. That Ci is done, since the 7 xi, by the
system fuzzy logic, fuzzy logic in French. Each parameter of the
catch
of sight is analyzed by the apparatus which afterwards of scientists
calculations deduces the type from it of scene to which it deals. Coarse
example: short focal distance, developed on the infinite one, foreground

actually several hundreds of analyzed data, but to in no case a
comparison

Re: Enable Shmenable. grin. Mint KX in my paws.

2001-06-20 Thread Joe Wilensky

I also have a KX that my repair guy told me had seen little use when
I brought it in for a CLA.
When I was researching what to get as a step up from my K1000, what
stood out for me regarding the KX vs. the KM is the KX's wonderfully
responsive silicon light meter (similar to the K2), as opposed to the
CdS cell in the KM (same as in the K1000 and Spotmatic F). The
silicon cell is not prone to the temporary memory effect of the CdS
cells and seems to provide a greater range (ASA 8-6400). The KX also
has the aperture readout (unless it has become slightly misaligned,
which seems to often happen) and MLU.
I love it as a completely manual camera, although it does seem quite
big compared to my ME Super and Super Program. The M and A series
lenses (at least the 50mm ones) look a bit small on it, and I was
lucky enough to pick up a K 50 1.4 for it, which proved significantly
sharper than my M 50 1.4 in a few very unscientific tests I did.

Joe

RE:

Tricky shot - need advice

2001-06-20 Thread Patrick Genovese

Hi,

I need advice on how to go about taking a rather tricky shot.

The subject is the inside of a church dome with an exquisite pattern on the
inside.

Here are some problems/challenges that I face.

The place is huge (approx 50 meters from the church floor to the dome's
apex).

The interior lighting is very problematic, a mxture ot tungsten and
flourescent ligting of various types.

I Want the shot to be symmetrical to enphasise the symmetry of the pattern.
The problem with this is that there is a big silver chandelier hanging from
a chain presicely in the center. To work around this I have arranged to
do the shoot when the chandelier is removed for cleaning in preparation for
the village feast.

I need to use slow film to permit a decent enlargement.

Natural lighting is somewhat uneven.

My flash setup is one AF500FTZ plus I can borrow 2 METZ CT60s

I was thinking of a bulb exposure in total darkness and using multiple
flash bursts to illuminate the interior.

Suggestions please! This shoot will happen between now and August 6, the
next chance for a re-shoot will be next year so I'd like to get it right
first time!

2001-06-20 Thread Patrick White

I found some good advice back when I was just starting out in photography.
The advice was to take risks with the camera in order to capture pictures
one otherwise wouldn't get, just don't take stupid risks. I decided my
camera was a tool for capturing images, and that I'd be a pretty frustrated
photographer if I was too scared to use it.
Having faced this myself, I can also understand the discomfort of taking a
high valued setup into danger completely. I considered a protective case,
but decided I'd be too scared to take my camera out of it's case. I also
considered the point and shoot, but it just didn't feel right to me. I
ended up with a $50 K-mount body and lens.
Nowdays, I find myself mentally rating my equipment as to how much risk I'm
willing to take with it. When faced with a situation like the boating, I'd
match the equipment risk with the situation and then go out without further
worries.
If I ever lose that Sears body, I'll be heartbroken. Not because of how
valuable it is to me, but because it has opened up a lot of photography to
me that wouldn't otherwise be open. I'll miss the old friend.

Re: Question about ZX5n Focusing Screen

If it's anything like the ZX-M, it's painfully easy. This works for the
ZX-M: Take the lens off the camera, and at the front of the focus screen
there is a gap in the metal frame that holds it in. Stick a small screw
driver, tweezers, dental tool, etc. in there, and gently pull towards you.
The metal frame will unhook, allowing you to drop and clean the focus
screen. Reverse the process to put the screen back in the camera.

How loud should a LX MD be?

Hi.

I use a motor drive on an LX now and then, and I was using it the other day
for something in quite a small closed room. When I reached the end of the
roll, and rewound the film, I was horrified at how loud the rewind was (The
MD is none too quiet anyway), but it was considerably louder than my Z1p. I
was wondering if this was normal? I haven't used the MD in a while, so its
not fresh in my memory if this is something that was always there or not.

Anyone out there have any thoughts on this?

Thanks as always in advance.

Yes, of course. I meant besides the pen, it comes with a wireless
mouse. Sorry.

A guy at work recently bought an Intuos

to higher specs, as that series was designed for graphics professionals. I
understand that you can get them in serial and USB versions, and they can
 work alongside your regular mouse.

I don't know about the feel (haven't used the Intuos) but the Graphire
also works alongside your regular mouse.

I'm curious to know which version of Photoshop LE it comes with. I got 5.0LE
with my scanner and if I can get a newer version for free with a tablet I might
 be even more tempted.

Well, mine came with 5.0LE, since I got it last year. I would check, I
think there's a newer version of PS LE, and chances are the tablet
will include it.

get a Pelican case that can hold it, plus the rest of my gear.
But at present I can (just) get everything else into carry-on.
Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I'm not comfortable letting airport

this is exactly why I bought my Pelican, and it is well suited for the

without drilling or blow-torching, so they'd have to steal the whole case
if they wanted something.

RE: Tricky shot - need advice

2001-06-20 Thread Paris, Leonard

I'd put a Sto-Fen Omnibounce on the AF500FTZ and use a lens wide enough to
capture as much of the dome as you desire, i.e. if you need a fisheye, use
one. The Sto-Fen will give good coverage down to a 16mm wide angle. I'd
practice several shots (while the chandelier is there) and see what the
results look like so as to be ready for when the chandelier is taken down.
The FA 20-35mm f/4 might be a good choice of lens to try, too. Hey, if a
50mm will cover what you want, use it. Same goes for longer focal lengths.

Subject: Tricky shot - need advice

 Hi,

I need advice on how to go about taking a rather tricky shot.

The subject is the inside of a church dome with an exquisite
 pattern on the
 inside.

Here are some problems/challenges that I face.

The place is huge (approx 50 meters from the church floor to
 the dome's
 apex).

The interior lighting is very problematic, a mxture ot tungsten and
 flourescent ligting of various types.

I Want the shot to be symmetrical to enphasise the symmetry
 of the pattern.
The problem with this is that there is a big silver
 chandelier hanging from
a chain presicely in the center. To work around this I have
 arranged to
do the shoot when the chandelier is removed for cleaning in
 preparation for
 the village feast.

This shoot will happen between now and
 August 6, the
next chance for a re-shoot will be next year so I'd like to
 get it right
 first time!

 Rgds

 Patrick

New Metz Flash

2001-06-20 Thread Camdir

Today we rec'd the new Metz 54MZ3 in Pentax, and Nikon fittings.

I have not had time to examine in detail, however suffice it to say that I am
impressed with the build quality, but must spend several hours with the
instruction book. It's significantly different to the 40MZ series, in basic
design, and info input.

The MZ-S is not mentioned as one might expect, however the flash does claim
full sync among the many features.

I will let you all know as I have more time.

Kind regards

Peter

A pelican is a bird, not too handy, unless you're a hungry crocodile.

A Pelican case is a brand name for cases that are built tough to protect
expensive fragile gear, and have foam inside that can be custom carved to
your equipment. Very handy.

Cheers,

It is a nice, expensive, hard case for carrying camera equipment.
Otherwise, it's a bird whose beak can hold more than his belly can. :-)

Whether it's handy or not, is kind of subjective. If you really need one,

Also, the identical instruction was gotten from

Re: Traveling in Deutschland

2001-06-20 Thread Francis Tang

Dear German PDMLers,

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I have a few questions that are bothering me.

I've been visiting Darmstadt for the past month or so and before I came, I got all
excited about the supposedly cheap camera gear here. I guess I must have been unlucky
because Darmstadt doesn't seem to have many good camera stores. (Noone here's heard
of the Voigtlaender!)

So my question is, where do German PDMLers shop for their camera gear? I've found
technikdirekt.de but since it only costs a tiny bit more to ship to the UK, it kinda
defeats the purpose of me picking up some cheap gear whilst I'm here.

Also - heresy alert - would I be correct to assume that the Voigtlaender Bessa cameras
and lenses are cheaper here than in the UK? And if so, where would I find them?

Sorry if I've offended the Pentax users here, but my lust for wider lenses has driven
me to the option of range-finder-style cameras. But fear not, I do own two ME Supers,
one MX, winders for all three, plus eight SMC Pentax lenses.

Yours,

Frank.

RE: MZ-S impressions

Pål,

I think this comes from looking and handling the competitors'
cameras that rival the MZ-S. They are huge and weighty. You have come to
expect top of the line cameras to be that way. Therefore, the MZ-S, when
first viewed and lifted is small.

I have had at least five people who are not into photography -
beyond point and shoot or old SLRs - all comment on the diminutive size of
the MZ-S.
