Re: Rodenstock 6x loupe
I suspect that they are a US made or Mamiya US labelled product as they are not readily available in Aus, HK or Japan, they are pretty expensive too, mind you I'd really like to peer through the Mamiya 4x to 12x Zoom loupe, that's a range I'd pay for. I am quite certain they were made in Japan (obviousely from the same manufacturer). As I know, the brand Cabin has never been popular in HK. For the Japan market, there is a Japanese site so they must be available in Japan. http://www.cabin-kogyo.co.jp/ regards, Alan Chan _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Flash for portrait
Let me say first off that Im new to the forum, asked my first question a few days ago and was amazed at how helpful everyone was. Thanks to all that responded. I have an AF 360 FGZ but I am new to the idea of dedicated flash. I will be using the flash unit on a 645NII. When I took my first portrait photos with straight flash not surprisingly the light was harsh and the shadows (on my makeshift sheet as a backdrop) harsher. I tried using a Photoflex On-Camera XTC II softbox to soften the light. I could tell that it did have some effect but nowhere near as soft as I would like. I dont have the money for a fancy lighting system or the room to set up a studio. Im just trying to find an optimum, inexpensive way to produce well lit photos without the harshness or shadows that professional studios make. Any and all ideas/comments are greatly appreciated. RE: Flash for portrait
Hi Steven I hope you get lot's of answers to this one as I'm in the same boat. I've been trying several things with bouncing the flash from various surfaces - with varied success. I have just bought 2 meters of DIY Diffuser and some gold paper. The diffuser is just translucent material from a craft shop. My idea is to line a very large cardboard box with gold paper and crumpled aluminium foil and use the cloth over the opening. I'll poke the flash head into the box and put the flash in manual mode and do the calculations for distance. Any comments from other PDMLers? There's a list of repair facilities on Shel Belinkoff's site. Oakland Photographic Repair is listed there. I know they do a good job on screwmount equipment. Re: Rikenon P lens lineup (was: FS: XR Rikenon Macro 28-100/4, $90)
Paul, Will a Ricoh P series lens work in program mode on an A series Pentax such as a Super Program? Thanks, Jim Fellows - Original Message - From: Paul F. Stregevsky [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 29, 2002 12:39 AM Subject: Rikenon P lens lineup (was: FS: XR Rikenon Macro 28-100/4, $90) Jim Apilado [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Do you know what primes Ricoh made that the the P setting? Ricoh K-mount lenses before the P were called XR Rikenon. P lenses dropped the XR and are called simply Rikenon P. Ricoh's muticoating began to be applied before the P series; the MC on my 28-100 and my 300/4.5 is a beautiful purple-blue. Off the top of my head, the P (program) lineup included the following: Primes: 24/2.8P 28/2.8P 35/2.8P (some say the same design as Pentax M and A) 50/1.4P (a different design as its predecessor, and now multicoated) 50/2P (same design as its predecessor, still single-coated) 55/1.2P 100/2.8P 105/2.8P (105?) 1:1 macro 135/2.8P I don't think Ricoh's XR Rikenon 18/2.8 was converted to a P version. I'm nearly certain the XR Rikneon APO 300/4.5 was not. Before converting to the K mount, Ricoh made a wide series of screwmount lenses; I don't know how good they were. I believe a 20mm was among them. Not that you asked, but the P zooms included: 24-40/2.8 P zoom (evidently made by Tokina and identical except that Tokina's also works in Program setting for Pentax; thanks, Peter) 28-100/4 P 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 P 35-70 f/3.4-4.5 P (replacing the 3.5-4.5; I had the 3.4 vs. 3.5 backward a week ago) 70-210/3.9 P probably more (a slow 60-300? a slow 100-300?) Since Ricoh introduced its program bodies about the same time as Pentax (about 1983-84), many K-mount third-party lenses made after that included the P setting for Ricoh bodies as well as the A setting for Pentax. I believe that later specimens of the Vivitar 105/2.8 macro is one example. Such lenses make great sense for those wishing to mix up their body lineup with a P-type Ricoh. But beware, as has been stated here many times: Never put a Rikenon P lens on a Pentax autofocus body; the P pin will lock into the Pentax AF hole, and you may never get the lens off. Re: Flash for portrait
Stephen, I have used the Lumiquest Soft Box (not the mini) on several weddings and portraits with good success. It is relatively inexpensive (US $25.00) and will fit on your flash (uses velcro). The other thing to consider is the film. If you are not using portrait film, things may be stronger/harsher than you desire. Re: OT: Fuji Provia 100F vs Velvia ? Comments ?
David, I lean toward the hater side, I suppose. Actually, it is more that I think it is a great film when the colors lose saturation (usually due to diffused or low light), to bring things back to normal. What I don't like is when it is used when the colors are already saturated and punchy. Then the results look too unreal. If you are a chrome shooter, Velvia is one to keep in the bag and use when the situation is right. Provia 100F or Agfa RSX 100 are both much better general purpose films. I think you would really like both of them. Provia is slightly lower contrast than RSX but great color. Try them both and see if you can pick a clear winner for you. The trick is to make the light source as large as possible. If the photoflex isn't big enough, try making a largish bounce reflector out of white foamcore. The foamcore is attached to the flash head (elastic bands), and the flash is fired straight up into it. Bend the foamcore at a 45ºangle over the head and it will bounce the light to the subject. I have seen some very large reflectors made with this method. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. FA* Lenses: Do you think we will see any more...
...or do you think they were finished with the 200mm macro? I must say, they are far from being a complete 'pro' lens series, with nothing wider than a 24, no fast 50's, and no primes larger than 85 till the 2 - 200's. Seems a shame, but I wonder if this limited lens philosophy of connoiseurism has stopped progress on this very fine line of lenses that I have invested a lot of money in. I guess the deal was the 28-70, the 80-200, and the 250 - 600 should cover it all, along with the 24, 85, and 200 macro, as well as a few supertelephoto primes. The limiteds are lovely but limited. I for one hope the FA* series continues, especially WITH powerzoom. Cameron - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Battery grip
Alex, The FDP grip is plastic and at least 2 piece, a moulded exterior and a plastic bottom plate that fits against the camera bottom. 4 or 6 screws hold this piece to the exterior. I think the grip is thick enough for batteries and long enough too, covering the entire bottom of the PZ-1p. You would have to take it apart to see if you could remove stuff and put the batteries in. There is room for batteries depending on the internal structures. There is the big wheel that holds a screw for the tripod socket (this is how the grip attaches). There is also a metal base plate on FDP grip for the new tripod socket. And finally, the grip strap attaches to a metal bar embedded in the bottom of the moulded plastic base. I think you've got to take one apart to tell. Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Just a question. More than excessively saturated, the colours were unreal... I tink there was some kind of problem about its compatibility with some processing labs. Now I like it a lot and it's my film of choice when I travel. What I still do not like about it is its excessive tendency to let the shadows go completely black if you underexpose. It's not the kind of film I like to use in a bright sunny day, even if its speed makes this statement a sort of nonsense... When I discovered the Provia 100F, though, I thought I had found MY slide film. The colours are more 'real' and the contrast is a lot more manageable. Its colour rendition is so neutral that compared to the Velvia it seems a bit (a tiny bit) dull. I use extensively the Provia 100F in 120 format, for paid assignments, when I shot in mixed light conditions (I mean very mixed: daylight plus flashlight plus neon light...): that's where it is really unbeatable. I really like its ability to keep a lot of detail in the shadows. Hope this helps. SMC Pentax 35mm f/3.5 K lens on eBay
Somebody mentioned a while back that they were looking for this. It does seem to be fairly rare. There have been none on eBay recently, and KEH doesn't have one. I have put one up for sale at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1362889643 and it really is a very good lens. _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Re[2]: Fuji Provia 100F: great film
You can get the Agfa Portrait 160 for $3.99 CDN a roll at Henry's. It's not a bad film for portraits, but I found the background color a bit murky (maybe it's the extra grain I see). The Fuji NPS, while not as nice for portraits, has much better overall performance. At $5.50 CDN it's pretty decent. There's a Fuji lab at Denison and Woodbine. LX question
Hi, I bought an LX recently but haven't had much chance to use until yesterday. One thing I noticed is that the back is difficult to close. My other cameras (MXs, MZ5n etc) will all snap shut just by pressing the back, but on this one I have to hold the back shut and then pull the rewind crank out and back in again (i.e. same as for opening the back) for the lock to click into place. Is this the normal behaviour of the LX's superior sealing or does something need adjusting? Re: Rodenstock 6x loupe
I checked out the loupe today. Its not too bad at all - a little bit of barrel distortion and the sharpness contrast looked good, although I didn't have anything to compare it with. The eye relief wasn't quite as good as I anticipated, and because I wear glasses I lose a little bit off the extreme corners and get just a touch more distortion. Having thought a bit more about my needs I will probably stick with my 3x loupe for previewing slides, and the 10x for checking sharpness. Re: A* 600mm f5.6
I bought the KEH lens after much deliberation, and with the help of this post. Hey, congratulations, William. Welcome to the Baby 600 Club. (Well, the 600/5.6 is a mere baby, compared to the larger and heavier 600/4 - g.) It came today, and I'll send my initial impressions (hopefully something more erudite than my present WOW!!) later, I'm looking forward to your feedback. but I'm wondering where you got the manuals. Mine did not come with any manual, and I'd like to get a hold of one. I'll check the Pentax site in a minute, I think I remember the 4-in-1 manual being there in .pdf format, but not the dedicated one. My lens came from KEH with the 4-in-1 manual, and that's all that I thought was available for some time (and I think that's all that is available for this lens on the Pentax USA site). However, the dedicated A* 600/5.6 manual popped up on eBay and I quickly BINned it. However, I really don't think that there's anything in the dedicated manual that isn't also in the 4-in-1 manual (except that it's not cluttered with extra text and images related to the other three big A* lenses). I've got plans to scan and publish (as PDF files) a number of my not-so-common manuals. When I do, I'll put 'em on my web site. Now you've gotta get hold of the A 1.4X-L and A 2X-L TC's, too - g. Enjoy that lens - it's a good one, and you'll get some good shots with it. Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: LX question
Paul, That's not normal. Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I bought an LX recently but haven't had much chance to use until yesterday. I plan to put it in for a CLA soon, but don't want to make a fool of myself complaining about something which may be normal. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. It's definitely not normal, Paul, so you probably should report it when you send it for the CLA. Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: OT: Fuji Provia 100F vs Velvia ? Comments ?
this makes me think: What's the color like compared to Velvia which is ISO 50 ? It seems that people are either Velvia lovers or Velvia haters - I don't mind the film but if the colors on the Provia 100 are a little more subtle, it may be the film for me when it comes to chromes. Anyone ever try or use both ? There is no comparsion. For landscape shots, everything just looks better on Velvia. regards, Alan Chan _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: LX question
It indicates your LX haven't been serviced for quite some time and need an overhaul. If you keep using it without CLA, the contacts on the back would wear out. regards, Alan Chan _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
