RE: 400FTZ
I know a few Nikon shooters...when they bitch about their gear, they bitch about the flashes. They're the weak link in any camera system. The shoe on the 500 *is* overly delicate. I broke mine last night with a fairly gentle flip of the bracket. It just fell right off in the middle of the bouquet toss. I used to own the Nikon SB-25 which was a better designed flash than the AF500FTZ overall. The shoe of SB-25 was held by 4 screws, so if the shoe was broken, the plastic shoe could be replaced in minutes. I don't remember about the AF500FTZ as I checked it out once only. However, the reason I did not buy the AF500FTZ was that the shoe looked rather thin to me. If you compare the shoe sizes of Pentax and Nikon, you would notice that the Pentax one is smaller and thinner. I think this is a design flaw that was inherited from the past. regards, Alan Chan _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Paal...? Also, on another thread you missed: PENTAX TO TOTALLY REVAMP ITS DIGITAL LINEUP IN JULY! I have it on good authority that Pentax will be revamping its digital cameras. The Optio 330/430 will be gone, moving up to 5 6 megs respectively, possibly in a whole new camera, and we will quite probably see the long awaited digital SLR. Re: Which MF camera for a second body
Hi, Scott, Wendy told me the same thing, and was so convincing, that a month later I owned one. I concur. You need an MX. Everything other camera on your list will cost about the same or more. And the MX is prettier than any of them. About the only thing the MX doesn't have is real MLU, but there's always the old gentle flick of the shutter release with a fingernail solution. Re: 400FTZ
That can happen with most shoe-mount flashes. Even the old Vivitar 283/285 workhorses were weak at the shoe. However, you could get replacement shoes for them. There is/was even a metal replacement shoe for the Vivitars. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the shoe is replaceable on my AF500FTZ. It looks like it would have to be a factory repair job if it broke. I guess I'll have to give it a close examination to see if I can find and signs of cracks or weakening. I suspect cumulative damage of some sort chose that instant to make it snap. Bad luck. I'm sure you had a working spare with you. I wonder about the Metz shoe-mount flashes. Are their shoes replaceable? I've only owned the potato masher styles, so I don't know about their shoe-mount flashes. RE: A* 600mm f5.6 and Accessories (long-winded)
David, Yup, I meant Wimberly. Two beers and my brain turns to soup. The man I met the other day said he uses his Sidekick with a 400 f2.8, so it should be adequate for my lens. I can't afford the full size model, nor do I think I need one. But I feel like I'm just putting too much torque on the stem of the ballhead to get a sharp image - every minor jiggle gets magnified many times by the time it gets out to end of the 600. I wonder if something like the Bogen 3420 Telephoto Lens Support, which would redistribute the center of gravity, would be of value. Certainly, it's cheaper than a gimbeled head, and part of the prblem, again, is that the lens mount is so far back on the lens. -Original Message- [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of David S. For this reason, I strongly prefer a flash that uses a replaceable bottom module. My Ritz Quantaray does the job nicely; I carry a spare $15 module. Which would you rather have break, the shoe on the flash or the shoe on the camera? Seems to me it's better to have the weak point on the flash itself rather than on the camera. It's usually less expensive to replace/repair a flash than it is a camera. The shoe on Pentax camera is held tightly by 4 screws. Pentax - New Directions
Hi Gang, Over the weekend, I was doing some heavy duty pondering (ponder,ponder...). The new L/6 is an very well specified camera with an extremely low price. It's specifications exceed those within it price bracket and match or exceed those of other costing much more. I think Pentax has hit a different level when they introduced the MZ cameras a few years back. Virtually the same body, just different components and interfaces on the same platform. Want 1/2000, install that shutter / want 1/4000, install that shutter / want multi-programme, install that dial, top deck and cpu / want a glass prism, haven't yet - we can do. They have gotten very good mileage out of that line and can still get even more. The L/6 challenges the 3/5 in terms of specifications. Shy is some and better in others. I look for a 1 or 2 to replace the 3/5 and provide a more MZ/S specified camera to really challenge the middle/upper level. The lens assortment that is available (excepting the consumer grade) is actually excellent good. No, they don't have the tilt/shifts of CN but their prime lens array is really second to none right now. Image stabilization needs to be in the works and, when coupled with their high standard in the long lenses, Pentax should be back on track. More July PUG I liked
Hi, I already indicated my number one and two favourites from this month's PUG. I really liked the gallery as a whole (like usual), but here are a few more that really caught my eye: High Adrenalin by Dan Mills: I love the pattern formed by all those looping, intersecting tracks and supports. And, you caught the rollercoaster at ~just~ the right moment, capturing the fury and excitement of the ride. What lens did you use? (you didn't mention it in your description) California Adventure by Steve Larson: Wow! Everything works so beautifully! The last glimmer of twilight, the sky almost completely dark on the right, the bright lights of the amusement park, mirrored on the water. It really captures what an amusement park is to me: fantastic whirling bright neon lights on a hot summer night. I don't know if it was a hot summer night when you took it, but I got that feeling from looking at it. Terrific! Thanks. Lines by Bernd Scheffler: This almost seems a study in artistic perspective. It's the placement of the two people that really make the shot. The patterns of the paving stones, the patterns of the lines, I don't know, there's just a very surreal feeling to the whole thing that I really like. It's one of those photos that I can't really explain why I like it so much, I just do! I think I'd like it a bit more if it were a little brighter, but that's only a small criticism; the composition more than makes up for that little shortcoming. Vis-a-Vis by Andreas Busse: Here's another almost surreal photo that I'll have trouble putting my feelings into words - I just know I like it a lot! I have no idea what these two objects are, but they look so stark standing there. Not knowing what they are makes me look at the composition all the more: the horizon bisecting the image, the shadow of the foreground object seeming to point out toward the background object. The beautiful deep blue sky. It just works very well for me as an almost abstract study in perspective and geometry. Thanks for posting it. Blue Winter by Johan Blixhavn Moeland: It looks so incredibly cold and forbidding! Maybe it's those bushes, which appear to either be bent over from a cold wind. Or, are they the tops of trees just peaking out from the top of blowing snow? Whatever, they are all that's there to break up about the bleakest landscape I've ever seen! I love the blue snow, graduating from dark to lighter, I love the sky, the last moments of twilight (or is it the first moments of daybreak?) with the horizontal dark strips of cloud. While the patterns and colours are beautiful, I think what mesmerizes me the most is that this is one of those photos that I stare at, and try to figure out what's going on; I try to make up a story or mental image of where it is, what time of day it is, what the few objects in it are. Then I give up, and just appreciate it's incredibly stark beauty in and of itself. Well, my dinner's ready. Maybe I'll comment on a few more in the upcoming days. regards, frank -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true. -J.
