G'day All.
I think that Tanya is displaying the Australian trait of believing in
others.
We Aussies are more likely to believe somebody, because that is how we
would want somebody to see us.

I have been told that Australians are very gullible.
But we are a very truthfull people.
Tanya, I side with you. I seem to believe the bloke as well.

I suspect that I am in the minority with Shel on this one. I have always
thought in terms of what a particular lens will do on a certain format,
rather than what a particular lens would do on a different format.

My method is to look at a scene and pick a lens that will suit the scene,
without relating back to a format I may not be using at the moment.
I will look at what I want to photograph and say to myself, I want the 210mm
lens (if I am shooting 4x5 that day).
What I will not say to myself is "that would look great with a 50mm lens,
but I am shooting 6x7, so I guess I had better grab the 105 instead".
IMHO, this is what the equivalency factor is doing, and I do believe that
thinking this way inhibits using a format to it's best advantage.

A 50mm lens 0n 35mm may be equivalent to a 105mm lens on 6x7, or a 150mm
lens on 4x5 in terms of absolute angle of view, but that is the only valid
comparison.
Every other imaging factor will differ.

Hi Shel,
I've heard that a lot, and I frequently use 35mm focal lengths as a
mental point of comparison. For example, I know that my 127mm 4x5 lens
is somewhere around 45mm in 35 terms and my 105mm 6x7 lens is
approximately the same as a "normal" 35mm lens. I work in advertising
and I've found that most art directors understand 35mm angle of view,
so when working in other formats they frequently ask, "What's that in
35mm?" The same is true on television shoots where 35mm lenses are
closer to APS or the current crop of digitals in focal length vs. angle
of view (because the neg is actually half of what we call 35mm.) The
still camera 35mm focal lengths are a reference point for many working
pros and their clients.

The quick assessment of angular lens coverage is more important to most any

I've got a great 35mm lens that's used on an LX. I decided to put a hood on it

Other than the time frame that the RIT guy puts forward, it seems pretty
logical. I don't recall where I read that Kodak had indicated they had no
more R&D money for film, but this article refutes that.
What i don't agree with is how long the article seems to think it will take
digital imaging to supplant film imaging in the mainstream.
Most film is shot be people under the age of 40, by a very large margin, and
this group is switching to digital quite quickly. Most new cameras that we
are selling now are digital, I suspect this is a pretty common trend, though
I would like to hear from Brogden or someone else who works camera retail
for confirmation that this isn't just a blip where I live.
The average life expectancy of a film P&S is about 5 years, after that it
gets replaced, either because it is broken, or because the owner wants
something shiny and new.
As the present crop of cameras gets replaced, it is most likely that they
will be replaced with digital cameras.
The market trend is already there, and the buying pattern of the users
hasn't really varied for a couple of decades.
If we look at this year as being the first year of major inroads by digital
photography into the mainstream, then within the next 5 years, most all of
the film cameras out there will have been replaced by digital cameras.
This is why I am giving colour print film 5 years before it mostly goes
away.

Hey Cottster!

I totally agree, and maybe that is just the girl coming out in me, cause I
always *like* to give people the benefit of the doubt - in saying that
though, as I said, I would never part with any of my $$$ for something that
looked even remotely suspicious...

Yep, I know about shill-bidding, BUT I had never thought of it in the
respect that you are referring to, with the bidding/buying idea to build
feedback etc.

Actually, in retrospect, when thinking about this, I am surprised that
people have EVER even bought from me, as this is almost what I did. In the
first probably year on Ebay, I only ever purchased - and very small things
too - usually $2 or $3 items of baby clothing. I think I had well over 30
or so "buying" feedbacks before I ever got the guts to actually sell
something...

Yeah, the Bulgaria thing is extremely eyebrow raising, and like I said in my
last post, it was this comment in his email : "But if you want to win this
amazing Pentax camera please watch auction very carefuly becuase i think
that you will be outbid very soon" that really set the alarm bells off
for me...

"pretty Aussie's with bony butts??" hmmm, well, not sure that I agree with
the "pretty" bit, BUT let me tell you, after tommorrow and the coming days
"festivities" complete with LOTS of "good eatin'", combined with too many
hours sitting in front of this bloody 'puter, I fear that it is starting to
"err" on the side of "cuddly" rather than "bony"... hehe...

Mary Chritmoo AND (he has just added this bit) a "Nappy Nooo Year", hehe, I
just love kids (and especially mine of course!) lol...

No More Light Leak

2003-12-23 Thread frank theriault
I'm sure no one remembers, or even noticed in the first place, but just in
case you did:

You may recall that I mentioned in passing a few weeks ago that there
appeared to be a probable light leak on the "new" LX. Seemed to be coming
in throught the bottom of the film loading door.

Well, it looked that the door was a bit distorted, and prior to bringing it
in for repairs, I decided to try gently bending it back into shape myself.
Well, I got back a couple of rolls last week, and there appears to be no
leak.

I'll keep my eyes open for further problems, but it looks like all's okay
for now.

Not that any of you were keepiing up nights worrying...

cheers,

Ok, guys, so yep, the email HAS been pulled - I put in a bid for au$100 just

like this:

"We are writing to inform you that we recently ended all listings for seller
alsmith20001 on eBay. The seller's privileges to trade on eBay have been
temporarily suspended while we investigate this matter further. (The
current account status can be viewed next to the user ID of the seller on
the eBay site.).

Our records indicate that you were a participating bidder or buyer in this
seller's listing. You will need to use your own personal judgment in
deciding whether to complete this transaction.

As described in our User Agreement, eBay is only a venue, and we cannot
guarantee that sellers will complete transactions nor can we guarantee the
delivery or quality of bought items. As a basic principle, a buyer should
know with whom he or she is dealing before sending a payment to a seller.

Depending on the circumstances, you might decide to delay payment to a
seller until completely confident that the transaction will be completed
safely. If you decide to delay payment but already paid by personal cheque,
you may wish to contact your bank to discuss whether it would be possible to

contact your credit card company's security department to discuss this
payment - many companies provide protection in certain circumstances. If
you paid by money order, you may want to contact that money order company
for information on how to stop payment.

Please note that the ending of the listings for this seller is a
precautionary measure. The grounds for this suspension may be the result of
a mistake or misunderstanding.

BLAH, BLAH etc, etc"

Now, something even MORE interesting I sent the following email to the
SELLER before the auction was pulled (and no, I didn't hold back...):

"Hi there,

I was just wondering if you could reveal the place where you were able to
obtain this camera body for such a low price? Myself and others are very
interested in this auction but don't want to bid due to you having no
previous feedback and the fact that you say you are in the UK, but in
Bulgaria. As far as I know these are two very different places. There are
many people who have viewed this auction and labelled it immediately as a
"scam", do you have any information to tell me otherwise? Do you have a
photograph of the actual camera body rather than just one from another
website? If not, surely you could use one of the digital cameras you are
auctioning to take a photograph of the other one..."

to which the seller responded immediately with:

"The cammera is located in Bulgaria ..For people who have labeled this
auction as a scam i will propose this people read the eBay buyer protection
agreements and terms and then we can talk again :-) I have little cammera
store in Bulgaria but as you know people here does not have so much money
to buy a professional equipment like this , that is why i have decided to
open an eBay acount and sell my most expensive cammeras in Internet. The
price is low for now but please notice that the auction has 2 more days
so. Just watch the price next 2 days and you will see that it will arise
maybe to some price like 1700 or maybe 2400 GBP or maybe higher who knows.
:-).But if you want to win this amazing Pentax camera please watch
auction very carefuly becuase i think that you will be outbid very soon"

The last line to me makes it a bit suss - BUT it could have been just a
genuine seller who was panicking at the thought of a very expensive camera
going too cheaply and was trying to "boost" his bids

You know what - in this instance, I think I believe the poor guy. I still
wouldn't part with any $$$ BUT, it does make me wonder if he wasn't
completely genuine. I would say that his main mistake was listing without a
reserve price, having had no feedback. Obviously, English is his second
language, so I think, in THIS instance at least, the guy was just "struck
down" buy the language barrier, and not having thought about the fact that
he had no prior record to go by. He just expected it to go much higher
having seen the other *istD auctions and didn't think he would *need* a
reserve price - of course, he also didn't take into consideration his
"exotic" location and his non-existent feedback, OR the fact that he only
became an Ebay member two days ago. The poor guy has probably been lurking
around ebay for years, and finally summed up enough courage to actually list
something, of course, had it been a roll of film he was trying to sell, he
probably would have received a much better response.

So, in retrospect, we have learnt two lessons from this - 1) we know now
that Ebay is "onto" things like this and obviously working very hard to
prevent scammers and the like 2) there is no "Bulgaria" in the UK... 8-)

AFAIK, it was possible to identify MZ-S bodies that are affected by
entering Serial # at the following URL on Pentax Homepage:
http://www.pentax.co.jp/japan/news/information/20010619-s.html

I did try it two years ago when I bought MZ-S. Return info was that
my MZ-S is clear. The unfortunate part of this is that, obviously,
page is not available anymore. So this won't help you much, I'm
afraid. Maybe somebody can still find out the corresponding page
somewhere else on Pentax pages.

It looks like this link will do the job.

Re: Slightly Dodgy looking Auction

2003-12-23 Thread Leonard Paris
Auctions could be legitimate. He may have access to stolen property. That
fits the no reserve scenario. We had a fellow on eBay before that worked
for a large camera store that was auctioning off stuff at heart attack
prices. He got caught and then the buyers were questioned as to the
whereabouts of the equipment they bought from him. I don't know that
anything was ever actually recovered but the seller is, I believe, still in
jail.

Not that I have anything against Bulgaria in general. I have visited
several
times and it is a lovely country with some fantastic people, but there is
something about this that looks slightly suspicious.

Nothing from Pentax says that feature will be on the 35mm lenses.

FS: PZ-1p, grip strap (photos), FA 28-105 power zoom

2003-12-23 Thread Joe Wilensky
Here are photos of the PZ-1p body and grip strap I listed yesterday
for sale (details follow):

http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/eBay/PZ-1p.jpg
http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/eBay/PZ-1p_front.jpg
http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/eBay/PZ-1p_top.jpg
http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/eBay/PZ-1p_grip.jpg
It's in KEH EX+ condition (that is where I purchased it from) and beautiful!
The "PENTAX" lettering on the grip strap is worn, but the grip strap
is in otherwise very good condition.

I also have a KEH EX+ Pentax SMC-FA 28-105mm power zoom lens for sale
as well, which I'll include with a generic brand hard case that fits
and protects it well.

The PZ-1p camera includes the grip strap, original instruction
manual, a full case and a bottom half of a case, and will ship with a
couple of extra new batteries. It works beautifully and has all its
covers.

Prices include shipping/insurance in the continental U.S., and I'll
kick in a bit toward shipping costs overseas. Prices: $425 for PZ-1p
with grip strap/batteries/case, $125 for the 28-105 zoom.
