Yes, and that still hasn't fully healed. If I stretch my thumb a
certain way it still hurts a little.

This time I did a better job. I could barely walk last night.
Getting in and out of a bath is quite difficult when you can't bend
your knee. The Mrs mentioned the dreaded 'd' word but it's only a
bit of bruising and a nasty scrape.

What's annoying is that there's no machismo in crashing like I did.
I really should have made up a more interesting story, which wouldn't
have been difficult considering the track I was riding home from.
Instead I've been using it as an entertaining anecdote of how a
moment's inattention can spell disaster.

And yes I am considering some shin & knee pads...

At least 15 to discuss the backward compatibility of the brand of
light bulb being used, (10 of those would get into a flame war about
the rumors of a new, more efficient light-bulb and whether it would
maintain compatibility.)

3 to post graphs of the relative luminosity of the old and new bulbs,
with equations to show the luminosity decay as a function of
temperature and socket type.

7 to point out that the equations fail to take into account the
filters being used and the difference between 8- and 16-bit luminosity.

11 to descend into puns on light, bulb, and related terms. ["It would
only take one if it were a light bulb, but it would take two or more
if it is really heavy..."]

Meanwhile the bulk of the list members would ask "will you please
turn out the light so we can go back to sleep?!?"

I kind of agree with you, Bruce. Yet there is this bigger piece of wood
on the foreground on the right. This is this constant dilemma in this
kind of shot - to include something like this in the frame or to make a
few steps forward and leave it out.

I think I rather like what Peter did, though personally I would at least
try to take the same shot without that pole and see how it compares with
this one.

Add to that a double or even triple digit number of messages that will
be posted following the event of changing the bulb. After all, was it
Pentax intention to change the bulb or was it to be left there for sake
of compatibility with previous bulb models ;-).

Some of us, also known as brotherhood, would then argue that
professional bulb changers should be using only medium format bulbs.

Finally, we will have to thoroughly investigate the differences between
digital and analog bulbs, you know.

Re: OT - Mics n audio n stuff

2007-02-26 Thread graywolf
Couldn't hurt.

What I am intending to do at this point is direct stereo. (1) I want to
record nature sound like the wind in the trees and water. But not bird
calls, insect sounds, and technical stuff like that. (2) Live acoustic
music ensembles. (3) Possibly, if I can get an in, some interviews for
the local radio stations. (4) Narration of children's books. (5)Who
knows where things might lead.

All pretty much as a hobbyist, so I will not be able to afford the best
stuff, but my research seems to show that mics need to be in the $100
range here in the US to be at all decent. I remember the old direct
stereo (2 mics) recordings as sounding better than the current mixed
stuff, maybe just a case of reminiscence making it seem so, but I want
to give it a try.

It's outdoors and the staute has been eroded by centuries of rain. It's
part of a building exterior and the flowers (lilacs?) are growing up
the side of the wall and arounf the statue.

The conversion took a lot of work. I did two conversions, each with a
different color filter, and blended them differently in various parts
of the image.

There are cheaper alternatives to pocketwizards.

You can get the Chinese 4 channel sets for $80 from Adorama.

Or you can find 'em on eBay for $20. Buy two sets to get the additional
receiver and have a spare transmitter in case the other goes south.

Pointers, yes.
In Denmark I bought my K10D from www.Webfoto.dk
Their prices were comparable to the otherwise cheaper internet shops in
Germany.
I paid 6.659 Dkr.
They wnated 1.900 Dkr for the grip.
I bought one in Germnay (Foto Erhardt) for considerably less: 1.300 Dkr. -
only 68 % of the Danish price.
And I have seen larger price differences than this.

I finally ordered the D-BG 2 battery grip and an extra D-LI50 battery, for
the K10D.
I was surprised that the prices for these things seem to vary a lot - like a
100%.

I don't really need the extra power - there's something like 1000 shots in
one battery charge - and I rarely do more than 1000 shots in a row. ANd I
have the *ist D as back-up.
But I cerrtainly like the grip - extra release and other controls - a lot.
It's brilliant.
Anyway - I guess there's an extra security in having one extra, charged
battery at hand, all the time :-)

The *ist D was said to have a problem, dealing with both batteries, right?
Does the K10D suffer from this disease too?

Re: Pentax digital medium format

2007-02-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
For sports shooters, it's a no brainer. You have to go with Canon.
For a studio pro, who does mainly fashion, the 645 might be
approving. Many of the New York fashion shooters were using the
Pentax 6x7 last I heard. Don't know what they're using now. But if
some are still shooting film, they may go for Pentax, as the 6x7
lenses will work quite nicely on the 645.

OT: How many List Members Does it Take?

2007-02-26 Thread Tom C
How many mailing list members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been
changed.

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the
light bulb could have been changed differently.

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light
bulbs.

13 to flame the spell checkers.

18 to correct spelling/grammar flames.

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb".

6 to condemn those 6 as anal-retentive.

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is
"lamp".

5 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that "light
bulb" is perfectly correct.

6 to email the participant's ISPs complaining that they are in
violation of their "acceptable use policy".

4 to post that this mailing list is not about light bulbs and to please take
this discussion to a lightbulb mailing list.

11 to defend the posting to this mailing list saying that we all use light
bulbs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this mailing list.

1 to show everyone how he didn't have to change the bulb but fixed it
up with duct tape & balin' wire and wants to know if he's now
qualified for "Redneck Status".

3 willing to let him have honorary status.

15 saying he is disqualified because his fix actually worked and
continues to function and besides nobody was hurt during the repair.

3 to claim that since they have superior visual skills they don't need
those "damn bulbs".

27 to say the new energy saving bulbs will never replace the old
standards and speculate which models will be discontinued in 5-10 years.

1 to ask, "can you kill an elk with a light bulb?".

another one to say, "Yeah, but a heavy bulb penetrates better and is
more likely to make up for poor placement.".

8 will insist that the light trajectory from a fixture featuring
multiple 60-watt bulbs is flatter than the trajectory of a single
big-bore bulb of the same total wattage.

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where
to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for
this technique and what brands are faulty.

27 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs.

14 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the
corrected URL's.

3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to
this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group.

33 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including
all headers and signatures, and add "Me too".

12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they
cannot handle the light bulb controversy.

19 to quote the "Me too's" to say "what he said".

4 to say that, "BY GOD lightbulbs are for sissies!" and that in their
day they had to use coal oil lanterns and home made candles.

8 to post rolling eyesHere we go again!!

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?".

14 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about
light bulbs".

20 to wonder why some of these people don't read their owner's manual
instead of asking the whole world where the light bulb is, what type
it is, and how to change it. But they don't want to post such a question.

8 to say that flourescent is far superior to incandescent.

12 to refute that it makes no difference whether one uses incandescent
or flourescent.

3 to state that they "know someone" who was blinded by the use of
incandescents and only an inexperienced person or outright fool would
choose anything other than flourescent.

3 to state that they have tried reading upside down using
incandescents and can still see absolutely no difference between the two.

1 to put his incandescent light bulbs (lamps/lightbulbs) in nothing
but fiberglass swirly colored light fixtures.

6 to condem anyone using grid power, obvious from their reference over
which type to use and demand that everyone switch to eco-friendly candles.

6 to push for the further development of LED clusters.

and finally, 1 mailing list "lurker" to respond to the original post 6
months
from now and start it all over again.

Re: OT: The tomb of Jesus

2007-02-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
That's exactly the point of archaeologists who have studied this.
Mary and Joseph were very common names, as was Jesus. But most
experts say that the third name isn't Jesus anyway. It was
mistranslated. Whether one believes or not, this "discovery" of a
tomb was nothing special. What's more it's location doesn't
correspond to anything else that is known about the historical (not
religious) Jesus, son of Joseph and Mary.

To my mind that is *the* big consideration for "professional" use;
is addtional and/or replacement gear readily available when your own
equipment is unavailable or inadequate.

Canon win, hands down, for the sports shooter; it's easy to rent those
big lenses in any major city, and at all major events Canon show up with
a truckload of free loaner gear (and technicians to service your stuff,
free of charge).

Yup - I just got some files from a wedding that the ceremony was shot
somewhere else and I did the reception here in California. The
photographer who did the ceremony and wedding party used a Canon 10D.
Pretty good work, too, I might add. I'm sure there are some segments
in the professional world where cost is not a major issue, but I don't
think it is the wedding photographers.

I have found that with many retailers, if you do upgraded shipping,
they'll ship your item more quickly than if you just ship Ground.

I've been ordering from Buydig for years with no problems - lenses and
bodies as well as digicams. I have a list of preferred retailers.
which includes Buydig, and when I use Pricegrabber, I use the cheapest
one of those. Buydig often comes in a little cheaper than B&H for me
because I have to pay sales tax at B&H.

Hi Jim,
Something like these? I pulled rather ham-fistedly at curves in
Lightroom to try and bring down the bright area. (Try and ignore the
very cool colours compared to the original, I started from my own scan

Absolutely. If my camera breaks, my first port of call is to the hire
company to pick up the replacement, then to my job. At some point I will
have to drop off the camera to the repairers.

By an astounding coincidence, the hire company is also the repairers ;-)

In my job, time is of the essence and measured in minutes, not hours.
You're entirely correct, and rental availability is a crucial
consideration. It was a major determining factor why I chose my
equipment supplier. They fix it when it breaks, and loan a replacement.
Literally one-stop-shop.

Hell's teeth lad ;-)

I'm no audio specialist - I've had a enough training and experience to
get me by. I have a Sennheiser MKH-416 (directional) as the main mic in
a Rycote Softie windgag with a wireless plug-on transmitter at the base.
It lives on the side of the camera and eats 9v batteries like you
wouldn't believe. I buy 9v and AA's by the hundreds.

Otherwise I have a Beyer omni stick-mic for 'joining me now live here at
the scene' Kermit the frog reporter stuff with another plug-on
transmitter, two standard Sony ECM-77B lapel mics (hard wired) for
boring studio type setups (to be honest they never come out, instead I
use...) and a pair of Sennheiser small lapel mics that are each attached
to a wireless transmitter. One is kept in a small pouch and is used
several times a day, matched to the camera's on-board receiver (same
freq as the 416 and the stick mic, though only one can be used at a
time), and the other lives in a bigger pouch with its matched receiver
and brought out for a two-handed wireless setup - although not often - I
can only monitor and adjust the level of one mic/receiver combo while
filming. I set the other level and leave it - usually the reporter as
they tend to talk at the same level. Punters vary from Hamster Sneeze
Soft to Wounded Klingon Death Bellow and you have to ride it like a
Mustang with a rocket up it's arse sometimes!

I suppose it depends what you're going to mic up WRT what you need. I
have a friend who is a freelance sound recordist who knows much more
about audio than I do, I could chuck your email past him if you like,
see what he says.
