DA* 50-135 arrived yesterday

2007-08-12 Thread Jan van Wijk
Got a nice parcel yesterday with the DA 50-135.

Have taken just a few dozen shots with it sofar, and the
results look promising. Sharpness is good, but I had
quite harsh midday lighting so can't say too much yet ...

The feel of the lens is nice, it is heavy for its size, but much
less than the Sigma 70-200 2.8 it is replacing of course :-)

The build is great, feels very solid, the zoom and focus ring
move smoothly without any play (a bit stiff actually).
The hood is rather large, a bit too much for my taste and
it is plastic (allthougy a bit sturdier than most others).
A metal 67mm scre-in hood works too, but the one I have
is a bit to short I think ...

I tried it without the K10D firmware upgrade first, and it works
just fine with the screwdriver AF, but is noisy as usual.
Unfortunately I failed to time the AF for later comparison
with the SDM :-(

After upgrading the firmware, focusing seems about the same,
perhaps a notch faster but not like twice as fast or so :-)
It is really silent though, you can hear it if you are in a quiet room,
but any sounds arround you and you won't notice anymore.

Due to the 2.8 opening, you can really see the plane of focus wander
through the scenery, and it is a bit weird to see that happening in almost
total silence. It still has the Pentax way of AF, steady movement to the
focus plane, then stop, and often a tiny correction to get spot on.

Have not really timed it, but moving focus from 1 meter to infinity
seems to take close to half a second.

I'll probably use it quite a lot on my holliday the next few weeks
and post some stuff on my gallery after that ...

Regards, JvW

Marnie,
I'm way behind on reading here, but like this shot a lot.
The patterns around the feather have me thinking...
How did the waves make this all happen?
Was the water sculpting out a divot behind the feather?
Look how the wave action on the sand moves into harmony on the left,
after the disruption on the right.
It truely puts me on the beach with the water.

PESO -- Three Egrets

2007-08-12 Thread P. J. Alling
I decided to drag my Vivitar solid cat out for some big bird shots.
Unfortunately the big birds weren't cooperating. The only ones I saw
were a couple of Cormorants, (not all that big and this group of
Egrets). They took off just after this and flew into full sunlight. In
those exposures they were totally blown out, (got to work on exposure
compensation some more),. As a second aside, the solid cat is pretty
good, but I really need a stove pipe for a hood when I use it on an
digital body.

http://www.mindspring.com/~happydogsoftware/PESO%20--%20threeegrets.html

Equipment Pentax *ist-Ds/Vivitar vmc 600mm Solid Cat f8.0

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Thanks Bob. I wondered too, was the feather itself enough to disrupt the
wave? There is a indentation behind the feather, I suspect the bird itself was
the thing, standing there, that changed the wave pattern when the water washed

Can't stop playing with this lens, had it over a week now.

I took the bottom plate off of the camera yesterday (4 screws into
plastic, 4 machine screws into the metal base) and then I was able to
slide the pin for the SD door out of the bottom (it runs along the
entire side of the camera - longer than I would have expected!).

The problem was obvious right away - the pin was BENT.

I must have dropped the camera bag just a little bit too roughly at
some point. The bent pin was making the door 'sticky' to open and
shut - nothing wrong with the spring at all!

I took the pin down to the vise in the workshop and straightened it.

Assembly is reverse of removal, and all is well once again. The only
"trick" to reassembly was the funky spring mechanism for the video/
power/cable release door on the left-hand side. It's a little odd.

Re: Dream Cruise Gallery Show

Thanks Ann. The Dream Cruise is the world's largest one-day
automotive event -- 50,000 cars and more than a million spectators. I
hung a variety of shots that hopefully suggest the flavor of the
event. However, they cost a lot more than t-shirts, and the cruise
crowd doesn't include a lot of folks who frequent art galleries. I'll
be happy if I sell one or two. But it's fun.

I'm quite certain that my A15/3.5 was made to order as well, although Pentax
doesn't advertise it as being done that way. It took way longer to get than
it would have, had it been a stock item, even warehoused in Japan.

Strange... In the description it says:

"This item is manufactured at the time of order.
Winning item will be shipped as soon as the lens is manufactured.
The delivery time is 2 ~ 3 weeks."

Which is more likely; the seller not being entirely truthful, or that
Pentax still makes this lens to Special Order? It's been gone from the
catalogues for quite a while, hasn't it?

Jostein

-

The FA* 600 F4 and the FA* 300 F2.8 are both made to order. Presumably
this means that Pentax Japan has the components stockpiled, and
assembles them into a lens when a customer orders one. I assume these
lenses will be available as long as the stock of components lasts. Whan
that is gone, no more will be made.

You could also order this lens through ordinary retailers or the
national/regional Pentax distributors...for now.

Peddling Inspiration

Received my September Popular Photography & Imaging yesterday. Pentax
bought the back cover to advertise the Pentax Photo Gallery. Small print

Inside there's a full page ad for "Pentaxian" - "Be on the look-out for

October issue of */Popular Photography & Imaging/*."

Looks like Pentax has begun an aggressive advertising campaign based

A Tamron Adaptall mount will bugger up the threads of an M42 lens if
you try and thread it on. You'll want the Pentax K-mount to M42
adapter ring. My Tak 400/5.6 works very well on my DS2, well enough
for moon shots at least. I need to find something else that it's
suited for.

I really love the 300mm (actually 450mm) focus distance on a dslr.

But which one is better value for money? The 300mm F2.8 Autofocus by
Sigma or by Pentax?

-

No, 300 mm is 300 mm. The angle of view is different.

Which lens do you think is likely to be better?

Only you can judge value relative to cost. It depends on your budget and
what image quality means to you.

You might want to wait for the forthcoming DA* 300 F4.

This is close to being really nice. I think the issue for me is that
there are enough flowers to perhaps look for some order or pattern,
but I couldn't find it - just seemed a little jumbled. There are not

I hope I am making sense - just a few less flowers and perhaps a

I'm quite certain that my A15/3.5 was made to order as well, although
Pentax
doesn't advertise it as being done that way. It took way longer to get than
it would have, had it been a stock item, even warehoused in Japan.

William Robb

-

I'm still trying to figure out the economics of this. Is assembly so
much more expensive than making parts that it makes sense for Pentax to
make the parts but not assemble them until someone orders a lens?

Come to think of it, for most lenses Pentax must have parts stockpiled
for repairs. Perhaps that is how it works.

OT USA warranty outside of US

2007-08-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hello All,
(Europeans primarily)

Does anybody know how does the warranty work in Europe for the
lens with the USA warranty. To be more specific, I am talking about
Nikon USA 5 year warranty.
Can a lens be fixed under that warranty in any of European Nikon
repair shops?

Another question, - if you know, - what is the durability record
for the Nikon 18-200 VR lens so far? Does it tend to be very fragile?

Thank you,

Igor

2007-08-12 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Go to the Nikon USA website and look for warranty information
regarding US distributor Nikon products outside the USA.

Same for Pentax.

The Nikon 18-200 VR lens hasn't been on the market all that long to
have reliable statistics available on its durability. If it's like
most Nikon lenses, it's probably pretty tough.
