Looks like a tighter shot of the previous one. The real issue for me
is the lighting - it just does nothing for the shot. It is maybe even
too tight - the lone chair there is what makes it - so showing even
more 'loneness' would strengthen the shot.

Speaking of Chuck Norris. Did you know:

1) Guns don't kill people. Chuck Norris kills people.

2) There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Chuck
Norris allows to live.

3) Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.

4) The chief export of Chuck Norris is Pain.

5) There is no chin under Chuck Norris' Beard. There is only another fist.

6) Chuck Norris has two speeds. Walk, and Kill.

7) The leading causes of death in the United States are:
1. Heart Disease
2. Chuck Norris
3. Cancer

8) Chuck Norris drives an ice cream truck covered in human skulls.

9) Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.

10) Chuck Norris doesn't go hunting CHUCK NORRIS GOES KILLING

11) Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are
trademarked names for his left and right legs.

12) Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks
and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction
was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil in the face and took
his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn't stay mad and
admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every
second Wednesday of the month.

13) A blind man once stepped on Chuck Norris' shoe. Chuck replied,
"Don't you know who I am? I'm Chuck Norris!" The mere mention of his
name cured this man blindness. Sadly the first, last, and only thing
this man ever saw, was a fatal roundhouse kick delivered by Chuck
Norris.

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Last night I dreamed about Mark Roberts..

2007-10-04 Thread Paul Sorenson
Not entirely true, Grasshopper. A search of the NTSB General Aviation
accident statistics for the four years 1998 - 2001 (the latest I was
able to find) indicated only two aviation accidents in the Chicago area.
One was clearly pilot error - the pilot was attempting to take off
using less than full power; the other was of an indeterminate cause but
runway length was more than adequate for the aircraft involved, a Beech
King Air 200.

As for the winds, you simply had to be competent at crosswind take-offs
and landings and know the limitations of your piloting skills and the
aircraft you're flying. *Most* aviation accidents are attributable to
pilot error; errors in judgment and attempting to continue flight beyond
the limits of your skills as an aviator. If that happens to occur
during the take-off or landing phase of your flight, you can't really
blame the airport.

-p

Aviation, to an even greater extent than the sea, is terribly
unforgiving of any incapacity, carelessness, or neglect.

RE: Another K10D observation

2007-10-04 Thread Rod Connan
I would suggest the setup and work flow I use.

I carry a battery in the camera (The Pentax original) and a battery in the
battery grip.

I set 'Select battery' in Set-up menu 3/3 to 'Grip First'.

In usage this means that the body battery is ignored and the grip battery
supplies the system.

One would have hoped that there would have been an automatic changeover to
the body battery when the grip battery is exhausted - sadly, this is not so!

But - you can quickly resume shooting on the Body battery by simply turning
the camera OFF and then immediately ON. This takes only a moment. Then you
can change the Grip battery at a convenient moment. When you do this, the
body battery shuts down and the grip battery again becomes the primary
source.

The beauty of this setup is that you never have an unexpected delay longer
than the time it takes to flick the camera switch to OFF then back to ON
after waking up to why your camera just stopped

I usually top up the Body battery when I think of it and when I expect to be
using more than one fully charged battery as I invariably recharge the Grip
battery after taking any images during a day so the body battery is pretty
rarely used.

Hope this is of interest - Rod

K10D observation - I've got the BG-2 grip for the spare battery. For some
reason the K10D battery indicator doesn't show battery usage.

The indicator shows full charge until suddenly, the camera shuts down from
the depleted batteries. The battery indicator THEN shows NO charge for just
a few seconds. But it never shows half charge or anything like that to
remind you to charge the battery before it's completely depleted.

Fortunately I had the *ist-D for backup.

Really three separate PESOs. However all taken with the *ist-Ds and my

f2.8-4.0. I was perfectly happy with my previous Vivitar 70-210 f3.5

So far I haven't been disappointed. The GESO is the result of walking
around Stony Creek, CT this morning, (I was there on business), and
shooting a few test shots. Damn it, I'm supposed to be saving up to buy

Pentax Colorado - Repair

2007-10-04 Thread Bob Blakely
[The short] I dropped my FA 1:1.8 31mm lend about one meter to concrete and
damaged my aperture ring.

[The Long - skip if faint of heart] A few weeks ago, being new to being
crippled,I slipped just outside my favorite coffee house (and, no, it's not
Starf*cks). Anyway, I reached out for a table as I fell and knocked my SMC
PENTAX-FA 1:1.8 31mm AL Limited off to the concrete. Ouch. Not as bad as I
thought it would be though. It hit squarely on the edge of the aperture ring
giving it a "cosmetic" flaw and knocking the ring out-of-round. I
immediately rued my decision not to purchase the "we don't care if you
purposely threw it against a brick wall" warranty for about an extra $50.
The lens still works perfectly, but it's very hard to turn the aperture
ring.

[The short] I took the lens to Harold, my repairman who verified that the
only problem is the aperture ring which must be replaced. Since the lens
still works, we agreed that he would order the aperture ring while I
continued to use the lens and that I would bring the lens in when it arrived
for repair. During this time, my repairman called Pentax Colorado several
times. Seems they couldn't locate the part or some such and fed him
bullpucky. They told him that this lens is not sold in the United States and
they couldn't repair it!!!

[The Long - skip if faint of heart] So I took the lens to my favorite Pentax
trained repairman who verified that the only problem was the aperture ring
which must be replaced. Since the lens still works, and since the lens can
still be easily used on my K10Ds on the "A" setting, we agreed that he would
order the aperture ring while I continued to use the lens and that I would
bring the lens in when it arrived for a few hours of R&R and registration
check. During this time, my repairman called Pentax Colorado several times.
Seems they couldn't locate the part or some such. My repairman requested a
diagram of the lens so that he could more specifically identify the part for
them. (I have no idea why "aperture ring for an SMC PENTAX-FA 1:1.8 31mm AL
Limited lens" is not sufficient.) Well, they sent him the wrong diagram! He
called them again and after some discussion, they told him that this lens is
not sold in the United States and they couldn't repair it!!!

[The short] Since I know this to be bullpucky, I called Pentax Colorado and
informed him that the lens IS sold in the US and, furthermore, the
literature that came with the lens lists Pentax Colorado as the place to go
for warranty service. After considerable conversation he agreed to order the
aperture ring from Japan and have it shipped to my Harold - to be arranged
when Harold calls back.

[The Long - skip if faint of heart] Well, since most of the larger major
camera houses sell this lens and since it's on the Pentax USA web site for
sale via internet purchase, and since the accompanying literature lists
Pentax Colorado as the authorized repair agent, I knew this to be bullpucky!
I called Pentax Colorado to find out what was going on. It didn't take [name
omitted] long to realize that I was the customer of the repairman he'd just
talked to on the phone. I informed him that the lens IS sold in the US and
on the shelves of many of the major retailers - such as Samy's; moreover,
the lens is for sale to the US on the Pentax US web site. He appeared not to
be aware of this, but I reassured him that he was smart enough to access the
site and look it up for himself. Furthermore, the literature that came with
the lens lists Pentax Colorado as the place to go for warranty service. I
asked him what he intended to do when one came in! I further informed him
that I'm no neophyte when it comes to Pentax cameras, that I've been
shooting them since the early '60s, that I have nearly [deleted serious 5
figures] current value (not new) invested in Pentax 35mm and medium format
cameras, lenses, bellows, flashes, meters and doohickeys and I follow my
investment and the state of Pentax closely. After a few moments of silence,
the conversation switched to his agreeing to order the aperture ring from
Japan and shipping it to my Harold to be arranged when Harold calls back.

For those of you who don't know, about a year back Pentax Colorado began
outsourcing their repair. I don't know the reason for this, but it might
have something to do with the Hoya buy in. Perhaps they have reduced staff
for the purpose of making things look more profitable, whatever, but the
bottom line seems to be:

1.Don't expect expertise from Pentax Colorado re: repair when you call.
2.Expect longer times to repair due to extra level between you and the
repairman.
3.Expect possible higher costs due to extra level between you and the
repairman.
4.Don't take what they say as gospel.

Bob...

Try taking the battery out and leaving it sit like that for two or
three days. It takes the capacitor in the camera about that long to
be exhausted and really do a full, clean reset when you next power it

Re: K10D date problems?

2007-10-04 Thread Pedro Oliveira
Hi.

I detected that same strange behavior with my K10D: the date and time
are, always
2051/11/12 (yy/mm/dd) and 02:43.

When I correct the settings and press OK and return to the adjustment
menu the date and time are always 2051/11/12 (yy/mm/dd) and 02:43 (24h).

Besides that, if I try to activate the World Time setting the camera
freezes and have to take off the battery to reset it.

Also tried to see if it was hardware related: changed battery
(original and generic), removed grip, removed lens, etc, always the
same thing.

To overcome this situation, I put the date in the year 2055 and the
month and day correct.
This way I could still use the camera during the summer vacations and
have the day and month correct.

Other than this, the camera is working flawlessly. It's a great camera.

I will send the camera for repair under warranty.

National is maybe even worse as far as security is concerned... Add in
the short runways and stupidly dangerous approach heading South and
stupidly complicated takeoff heading North... plus noise complaints...
but there is no way in hell Congress would ever allow it to be closed. :-)

My dad's cousin was an American Airlines pilot for 30 years. His
version at landing at DCA: "Head for the Potomac, close your eyes and
pray."

A ex naval aviator (now airline pilot) interviewed for a Washington Post
article said he'd rather land on a carrier... at night... in bad
weather... than at National.

GESO -- An enablement!

Really three separate PESOs. However all taken with the *ist-Ds and my
new, (to me at least), Vivitar Series 1 70-210, (third version)

So far I haven't been disappointed. The GESO is the result of walking
around Stony Creek, CT this morning, (I was there on business), and
shooting a few test shots. Damn it, I'm supposed to be saving up to buy

Re: CS-3 Printing Problem

--- Godfrey DiGiorgi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> What printer, printer driver, etc?

Yeah - that would be helpful info...

The printer is an Epson 2200, the driver is v 5.5. I'm
running Win XP x64 - the 64 bit version of Windows Xp
built around the Windows Server 2003 core.

Initially I assumed it was a driver problem - driver
support for x64 is not great. But since the printer
works with CS2 it looks more like a CS3 problem.

Hmmm - just checked all the settings again. The driver
is set to sheet feed, not borderless. Interesting -
with CS3 if I check the "centered" option in the print
driver under the "page layout" tab, Photoshop warns me
that the image is larger than the printable area, and
that it will be cropped. But checking that box with
CS2 works fine.

It looks more and more like there's something wonky in
CS3 - either my installation of it or the program
itself.

There was a serious 20 knot wind hitting me, along with a periodic
light rain, all that day's shooting. It was running left to right
with respect to this frame, coming from the north. I had to stabilize
the tripod by hanging my camera bag from it or it would have blown over.

The coast is very steep by Niarbyl: the road that the woman in the
photo is walking upwards along goes down to a little settlement of
classic Manx cottages in the cove below. I'm on the spit of land
hanging out to meet "the tail" ('the tail' is 'niarbyl' in Manx
Gaelic, the site is named for this outcrop of rocks that extends into
the bay like a big lizard's tail...) about 200 feet above the sea and
bay surroundings, looking backwards at the hillside going upslope
into the Isle's interior. The wind was intense!

Re: was Re: Leica Digilux 3 performance proof

2007-10-04 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I can't speak to the particular photograph presented, I don't know
enough about it. It looks like it was overprocessed to some degree.
You can't really judge a camera from marketing collateral.

However, the L1 is identical to the Digilux3 in terms of noise and
rendering when both are capturing RAW format exposures. I've compared
the L1 against the Pentax K10D and *ist DS very closely, have over
7000 exposures with it (35,000 or so with the two Pentax bodies), and
there is virtually the same noise signature on all three of them at
ISO settings between 100-400. So if you don't like the Digilux3 image
quality, you also don't like the *ist D or K10D for image quality.
The Pentax cameras' larger sensors are a bit less noisy at 800,
moreso at 1600.

The $3000 price tag you quote is high. The Digilux3 kit is available
at B&H for $2500 and has been offered with a 30% price rebate from
Leica as well from time to time, many have been purchased for $1800.
The lens alone is typically sold standalone for $970 ... it's not a
cheap kit lens, it's performance rivals the Pentax Limited primes.
The Panasonic L1 sibling is the same camera, modulo Leica's
additional QC and warranty (and different firmware for in-camera JPEG
rendering, irrelevant if you capture RAW format), had an MSRP of
$1995, sold for $1599 until a few months ago when for one reason or
another several vendors offered them at about $1050. I bought two. A
great bargain considering the lens and image quality.

Many have balked at the price of these cameras. Funny, though, is
that nearly everyone who bought one has been very happy with the
photos they make, despite the lukewarm reception in the review press,
rumors and nonsense about noise and other stuff. Even those who own
Canon 1Ds, Leica M8, and other such exotica ...

Last night I dreamed about Mark Roberts..

2007-10-04 Thread ann sanfedele
that got your attention, huh?

one of the last things I looked at on line were a couple more of Marks
shots from (my home town of) Chicago

Then I turned on the Tv (watching old movies and tv shows is what I need
to fall asleep) and an old WALKER, TEXAS RANGER
show came on. It starred Chuck Norris. I kept thinking how much Norris
looked like someone I knew -- but who was it?

Then it hit me... and I dozed off a while later... don't remember seeing
the end of the show.

( I was going to post one of my shots of Mark from GFM and post a link
to Norris but things of greater
necessity are piling up around me and it is Scrabble club night... )

anyway, I woke this morning actually remembring the most recent dream
which was Mark and I in a cab in Chicago -
dashing to get to a small airport... that looked curiously like one of
his fish eye shots - the cab driver was muddled
and we decided we would get there faster by getting out of the cab and
walking across streets rather than the cab
having to manouvre in traffic -- just like a zillion movies we have all
seen of like things in NY.

I woke as we were arriving at the airport and looking for the little
plane that would take us somewhere we were going
to shoot - I vaguely remember discussing with him in the dream that it
had to be a small airport because we were going
some where in the boondocks...

Re: Disappointing Results

I can't say for sure about A&I, I've never used them. After my first
experience with chromogenic B&W printed on color paper I decided to scan
and print my own images. The border will eat into your prints, so your
4x6 prints will really be closer to 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" weather or not

Hi,

it's because of lithium-ion batteries itself are very non-linear. As
mentioned - if there's no controller inside (like Sony Info-Lithium
batteries do have), there's basically no proper method to check the
battery state. Pentax batteries are just "pure" Li-ion elements (and
overheat sensor), so we have to live with that.

My first impression was that I liked 10368727 better.
It has some crispness in every detail and reflection.

After looking at the second longer, I realized that I also
like the glowing aura. That and a bit less sharp edges of the structures
make it looking more like a painting.
However, something prevents it from working for me to the full extent.
I am not sure what that is: colors, framing, or something else.

Regarding the framing, -
I suspect that the steam-pipe appearing in a weak zone of the photo
(i.e. not the center, not in any of the 2/3rd, etc.) is responsible
for that impression.
I wonder if cropping the photo vertically on the left
along the first step of the roof would change this impression.

Another (alternative) change that may also work for me is to crop it
horizontally from the top about 1/10th of the height (so it is still not
symmetrical vertically).

As for the first shot, - it looks like there is a tiny CCW tilt.
... and it does not seem as just the effect of the barge. I see it
e.g. in the vertical line going connecting the right edge of the "arcelor"
builging with its reflection.

HTH,

Igor

Re: CS-3 Printing Problem

2007-10-04 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
What printer, printer driver, etc?

I find that the Epson driver for the R2400 and 1270 present accurate
paper size and printable area to CS2 and Lightroom if I don't use the
"borderless" options. If I use borderless, the sizing goes wonky ...
yeah, another technical term. ;-) Similarly, defining custom sizing
for roll paper printing with either presents a lot of "hit and miss"
experimentation opportunity.

I don't know what you see as so "disappointing" in this snapshot. Can
you articulate?

The 4/3 System sensor is 13.5x18mm.

I don't know what "press releases" say about it, nor has the review
press been overly enthusiastic about it, but the Digilux3/L1 siblings
are in fact excellent performers. Many of the photos I've presented
here this year are taken with the L1 and been given fairly
enthusiastic response.

RE: PESO - Wychwood Park

2007-10-04 Thread Bob W
Frank,

I would like to see you take some pictures of the bike in action.
Obviously it wouldn't be you on it, unfortunately, but I reckon those
pictures would be worth seeing. Often the best photography is of
subject matter which is the photographer's first passion - taking
pictures is ancillary.

There is some very good bike photography around. An exhibition is
about to open at the HOST gallery in London, just around the corner
from Magnum's offices, which promises some good bike stuff:

http://www.rapha.cc/index.php?page=343

But I bet you could do just as well as these guys.

CS-3 Printing Problem

2007-10-04 Thread Mark Cassino
I've been doing more printing with CS3 lately, and am
finding that it incorrectly centers images on the
paper. For example - I just sent a 12x18 inch image to
be printed on a 13x19 inch sheet of paper. CS3
"centered" the 12 inch axis 0.14 from the top of the
page and .86 inches from the bottom. Obviously, a 12
inch image centers on a 13 inch piece of paper with .5
inches on each side...

CS3 even shows the incorrect figures in the box that
displays margins, and shows the image off center in
the preview. But if I force it to .5 on both sides -
it says that the image will be cropped and does indeed
crop it...

I figured it was buggy Win X64 drivers from Epson -
but then re-installed CS2 and found that it prints
just fine and dandy. So now I'm keeping CS2 around
just for prints.

Anyone else experince this?

It depends on the context, if you ask me. If what you do is
something that might have been done anyway (such as, say, tidying
up some litter in the hedgerow) then I'd have no problem with it.

So, in this case, if the Park Ranger would consider removing the
branches I'd say it would be OK to save him (or her) some work,
while at the same time creating a different image.
