BTW: You can make a video slide show with Microsoft PhotoStory, an
oddly-underpublicized bit of free software for Windows XP.

Not as good as Photo-to-Movie (which costs $50.00), but what the heck,
it's free.

Re: Shooting in low temperature outdoors

2007-11-15 Thread Bob Sullivan
Boris,
My climate is regularly -10 degrees C in the winter.
I have not experienced problems taking the camera out for shots and
then putting it away again in a bag.
As Cotty says, the real problem comes when returning a cold camera
(-10 deg C) to a warm interior.
(As in, I've left the camera/lens in a cold, parked car for 2-3 hours
in -10 deg C temperatures.)
The cold air has no capacity to hold water, but the warm air has water
suspended in it.
The cold camera and lens will precipitate the water out of the air and
onto the camera - internal parts if not careful.
Put the cold camera/lenses into an airtight plastic bag before
entering the warm environment.
After 30 to 60 minutes, the camera will reach room temperature and can
be removed.
(To speed the process, you can use your body heat to get it warm.)
Regards, Bob S.

Re: DNG Question

2007-11-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
For me, the decision to convert to DNG was based on the *ist DS PEF
files (and other cameras' RAW formats) being uncompressed ...
converting all RAW files to DNG format saved over 40Gbytes of storage
space. Embedding the original PEF files would actually make the files
larger than they were originally.

As of right now, I separately archive all PEF and other RAW formats,
all my files are converted to DNG on the fly when transferred/
imported by Lightroom and a separate backup copy is written to
another hard drive. Since I started using DNGs, I have not yet found
a single occasion to return to the original RAW file, however, so at
some point I'll likely just discard the original RAW archive.

My camera was quite out of adjustment from the factory. I'm pretty happy

I don't have any tabletop work coming up that I know of, but I'll give the

Yah, I have a hard disk recorder / DVD with this. I tried it and it
works okay. We have a 26 inch LCD which seems small, but this in a
quaint English cottage, so actually a good size. Controls are dorky
though. Better to hook up Mac through one of the various interfaces

want is a video projector, do a 'real' slide show ;-)

Good reflections needed, help please!

2007-11-15 Thread Brendan MacRae
Does anyone do product shots on dark (black)
reflective material that produces good, even
reflections?

I'm currently stumped working on a shoot for a local
company. I have to shoot some video components on
black (easy enough) but I'd like some good natural
reflection from the surface they rest on.

I've already tried tempered glass over black cloth
(velour) but the reflections double up and look
god-awful. There's a PS trick for reflections but it's
simply too much work for anything but straight on
views. All of my shots are oblique angles.

This guy had a really good idea:

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/08/on-assignment-shoot-your-shiny-new.html

But, there's no way I'm going to find a piece of
granite as big as I need it (30" x 48" roughly) and it
would be way too expensive in any event.

Any suggestions?

Thanks ahead of time.

That would involve buying a Mac..
I'm thinking I should run a cable from my computer over to the TV.
The controls aren't that bad on my TV though.
It's kind of strange that it doesn't just start a slide show when a card is
inserted, since there really is no other reason to put one into the slot
than to view a slide show.

FS Friday - M lenses

2007-11-15 Thread Scott Loveless
I've used KEH's online quote wizard to determine a "grade" for each
lens. I've priced them accordingly - slightly more than the quote
wizard, less than KEH's retail price. The glass is clear, no fungus or
haze. There are a couple of internal dust specs here and there. I'll
try to scrounge Pentax caps for these, but once I run out they'll ship
with generic caps.

M28/3.5 EX $55
M35/2.8 BGN $50 Surface marks on the barrel and paint nicks in the
filter threads.
M50/1.7 EX $60
M200/4 EX $45 Includes the original clip-on front cap.
M85/2 BGN $150 This one has a few paint nicks in the filter threads and
will not stop down to f22. I can see no difference between f16 and f22.
I contacted Eric Hendrickson last year about this problem, and he told
me that it might be a loose diaphragm pin. He also said that if it was
a diaphragm pin, he could fix it for about $30.

Paypal preferred. Actual shipping costs will be added.

Re: Shooting in low temperature outdoors

2007-11-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Keep camera and lenses in a shoulder bag. It will act as a thermal
buffer. Keep them in the bag unless you're using them. When you go
indoors, let the bag sit a few minutes before opening it,
particularly if it is humid indoors or if outside temperatures are
sub-zero or it was very wet.

Unless you go outdoors and have the camera and lenses out for long
enough to completely and thoroughly cold-soak in sub-freezing
temperatures, you should have no problems. This is exactly what I did
on my trip around the US last year, with days and nights of
temperatures in the bitter 0-15 F range. A few minutes exposure to
very cold temperatures will not make any difference at all.

Godfrey

Re: Digital Noise (Was Re: PESO: Bowling Night)

2007-11-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
The shots in question aren't for the fat lady. They're for the
corporation that owns the bowling alley. And they won't have a
problem with the noise. Heck, some here can't even see it. If it was
too obvious I could easily fix it. But that's beside the point. The
noise is an isolated problem. It doesn't appear on any of the other
shots I took that night. Only in this one area, under these lights,
and with this clothing. I've shot 14,000 images with the K10D,
without any being "ruined" by the camera. Although some were ruined
by the photographer:-). Seriously, that may be the case here.
Underexposure is the devil's handmaiden when it comes to noise. And I
purposely underexposed the midrange and shadow detail in the two pics
that show noise to avoid blowing out the highlights in the
background. Probably a bad choice on my part. On the other hand, the
K10D has proved to be an excellent choice.

Thank you for the compliment on my web site.

I don't use filters all that often. Good filters can be used to
filter light to improve the image, but they do cost some light.
That's a complex subject which I recommend you pick up a photography
book to read about. It's a bit too much to comment on in an email.

Re: WTB: M42 to K-mount adapter

2007-11-15 Thread Walter Hamler
Stay away from Roxsen! I bought one of those adapters and it was
junk. Once it was attached to the camera it was extremely difficult to
remove from the body. As noted, it was too thick and did not allow
infinity focus except on very long lenses that would focus "past" the
infinity mark.
I ended up getting a Pentax version from KEH. They usually have them in stock.

Well, maybe I'm the one who has got it wrong, but this looks very
similar to a number of emails I've received in the past, which I've
always thought were some kind of spam or scam, although I haven't quite
understood what exactly they were supposed to trick me into doing. The
messages I'm talking about (I haven't kept any of them, unfortunately)
haven't been about Pentax cameras, but seemed to touch upon some subject
or the other I had expressed an interest somewhere on the net. Their
text has been a more or less incomprehensible (auto-generated?)
collection of words related to the subject - organised into nearly
grammatically correct, yet more or less meaningless, sentences...

I thought this was what Mark was assuming, too...

Digital is making inroads at the other end of the age spectrum, too.
My mother (90 a couple of weeks ago) has severe arthritis, and would
find turning the pages in a photo album a rather laborious process.
But with a digital photo frame she can look at a few hundred images
without lifting a finger, even though she is otherwise not a part of
the digital revolution (no PC, no eMail, etc.). My brother and I
coordinate so that either of us can produce an updated set of images
on an SD card. While a VGA-resolution image at 72dpi may not be up
to the standards of a high-quality print on archive paper I doubt if
the difference is discernable to my mother's eyes.

Possibly. But if people who have tried both the "old way" and the "new
way" and are actually quite excited about the modern variant (I was
talking about some of those who are), still miss some aspects of the
traditional approach, maybe it can have an appeal to today's
fifteenyearolds, too. Not while they are fifteen, perhaps, but as they
grow older and become more and more like their parents without really

It's not really about the quality of the image. At least not directly.
The problem would rather be that today's computer screens just feel less
comfortable to look at than printed material and/or more stressful to

I recently shot a hockey game (Ducks vs. Sharks). The first thing I did was
shoot an example shot from my view point. This gave me the info I needed to:

1.Correct color temperature.
2.Correct exposure (+ 1 stop req.)
3.Check that these mods worked at the different views available to me.

Worked great!

I guess I just don't "have enough confidence in my knowledge and[/or]

The smc PENTAX-A* 1:2.8 200mm ED worked great too!

Boris, get some sturdy pastic bags that zip shut tight - better, 2 bags
for each article. If shooting outdoors then (say) going into a warm cafe
for lunch, place camera/lens, and any other lenses in the pastic bags
and seal them tight before going in a building. If you're going to shoot
indoors, allow a good 20 mins to 30 mins for the gear to warm up. Tip -
remove lenses from camera bag as the bag will act like a bit of an
insulator. Only remove gear from bags when sure they have warmed up.

Your worst nightmare is condensation within the lens. Zooms are
notorious for this.

If just popping in for lunch, leave them in the placcy bags until
outside again.

I come across this problem constantly in TV. It'll be 5 deg C below
outside and I'll be filming all morning, then the next job turns out to
be in a swimming pool. Nothing for it, the camera goes into the pool
area and I go for lunch. It can take up to an hour in those
circumstances. I carry a professional hair dryer as sometimes there is a
time constraint and the indoor shoot needs to be quick. But you can only
hurry science along so much...

Keep any batteries warm. That means in a trouser pocket. Cold batteries
are next to useless.

Otherwise, not much to go wrong. I've probably forgotten something but
others will chirp in.

Have a good trip!

Re: PESO: Seattle at Dusk

2007-11-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Rick, this is really good.

For some strange reason it looks to me like a scene from a Doom-like
game. The foreground specifically makes me think so. Don't take that too
seriously, 'cause this is my warped mind talking here. This is really a
very fine photograph.

Shooting in low temperature outdoors

2007-11-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi there.

It turns out that I have my tickets for Prague next weekend. I am going
to take my K10D, DA 21 and FA 43 lenses. The main issue that still
remains to be resolved is that of taking the lenses and the camera back
and forth between indoors (warm?!) and outdoors (cold?!). I've no
experience with this kind of shooting whatsoever.

Any hints of practical nature or rules to be observed would be most
appreciated.

Thanks.

I like the scene & composition, but it's a little too dark overall.

I hope you don't mind but I had a little play with it in PS (~200kb)

No no I thought that it was a shot taken with that lens which wouldn't
helped much IMO so I didn't (how stupid) check.
That's the first time I see this, hence I'm indeed very surprised.

It'd be cool to see it attached to a camera to have a better idea of
the size of the whole thing.

RE: A question about chimping

2007-11-15 Thread Tom C

I've never contended that the LCD was the beat-all/end-all when it comes to
viewing images. Of course it isn't. It can be very effective though at
previewing exposure, composition, and when magnified, a good indication of
focus.

My point was that it's far better than having nothing to preview and can make
the difference between getting a good shot and not getting one.

You're right, it's a hallmark of many pro's to check and review their
images on the spot in order to correct deficiences, and in the past they
spent thousands of dollars for the capability with duplicate backs,
polaroid film, and in some cases duplicate bodies.

It would be possible, because that's all I did. A simple levels
adjustment layer to bring up the foreground & painted on masks to pull
down the buildings.

I just happened to stop painting the mask at the top of the buildings. :-)

I don't agree with everyone that the print will disappear, for the very
reason you mentioned.

Yes the print will become less important to a large degree. Like I show my
pictures online and have no need to print out most of what I show online. But
I still make prints to frame too, I would bet most hobbyists do. And that is
a fairly big market.

And definitely no when it comes to family albums. (A lot of people may get
their digital prints done by a store, not do them themselves.)

Ever heard of scrapbooking? Big industry. Especially aimed at mothers who
want to save pictures of their kids and family. It tends to mainly be a female
hobby, but I don't see any slacking off on that front.

Marnie aka Doe :-) I don't do it but have met many women who do.
