Here's the cropped version, larger:

Medium (1024x475 pixels ~230kb)

Large (2700x1252 pixels ~830kb)

Re: PESO: Bath time ;-)

I remember the Pump Room. It's below the Roman baths. The architecture dates to
43 AD. Longleats Estate is another must see. It's a fabulous Victorian
residence. I shot a commercial there in the mid eighties.

I was working with a crew from London, and they were a very festive lot. We
went bar hopping in Bath after wrapping the shoot. One bar wouldn't let the
ladies in because they were wearing jeans. So they took them off. And were
admitted:-).

The most well recieved portraits we do seem to be a compromise between
leaving all the warts in place, and removing them to a certain extent. One
of my mentors had a very good way of teaching this: He said that if you use
candle light (and quite bright at that) to illuminate a person, you would
see about the right amount of detail for portraiture.
After that, the idea was to throw enough good quality softening onto the
lens to emulate that look.
One thing to remember is that a softening filter for portraiture is not the
same as a diffusing filter. Good quality Softar filters can be as or more
expensive as the lens they are mounted to.

I hate replacing main drives, it takes me weeks to get the machine back to
the way I like it.
If you can get things mapped, then it's not such a big deal, I guess. I've
always done clean installs though, which is a royal pain.
I just discovered the settings migration tool that Win XP comes packaged
with, which made my new machine a lot easier to deal with.
If you don't have irreplacable data on the thing, I'd just use it until it
craps out.
A couple of things that I've done on my machines is to seperate the "My
Documents" and email storage directories from the C drive, and I also export
my address book and bookmarks files to a backup drive from time to time.

Re: PESO: Bath time ;-)

Cotty, if you do get to go to Bath, you've gotta have tea in the Pump Room!
It's famously old-fashioned in everything,
including the service, and you can get a bottle of the spa water there too.
Not cheap though
My brother actually lives in Bath, so it was a no-brainer to stay there on
holiday a couple of years ago. He's not in
one of the famous crescents, but has terrific views across the city anyway!

Or install from scratch and use the now-upgraded version of Lightroom
which solves most of the difficulties.

Present status of my Leopard testing:

- Another Adobe update to LR is due soon that will fix the print
module issue.

- Issues with the Leopard backup system are more conceptual in
nature, due to the strategy of the Leopard backup system ... work
around by excluding the Lightroom database directories, or just turn
the backup system off, and you'll be fine.

- Issues with viewing files using the Finder are mostly
inconsequential ... most Mac OS X users never view files with the
Finder, that's what you use Bridge and Lightroom, or iPhoto, or
whatever for ... but that will be fixed when Apple revs the Finder in
another Software Update.

I've got a Leopard test system running from an external hard drive
now, into which I've installed both Photoshop CS2 and Lightroom 1.3
along with the Eye One Display 2 calibration software and Epson
R2400, HP 7960 print drivers. I haven't had time to exercise it
thoroughly yet, but so far I have yet to see it have any problems at
all when I've started up either the PowerBook G4 or Power Mac G5 DP
using it.

Sorry, don't expect a comprehensive report any time soon. I'll be out
of town next weekend ... and I have a LOT of work to accomplish in
the meantime. :-(

Portraits need to be sharp ... particularly the eyes ... but fine
details are less important than flattering the subject (if that's the
point of the photograph).

A lens designed for portraiture is generally designed to perform best
near wide open for shallow DoF and in the 5-10 foot focus range. And
to have good out-of-focus rendering qualities, again to support the
shallow DoF approach to portraiture.

Really good lenses perform well throughout the focusing range, of
course. I don't know anything about the FA*85 specifically. The M85/2
was a fine portrait lens, but a little long for my tastes on the DSLR
bodies.

The DA70 Limited and FA43 Limited make excellent lenses for
portraiture at large apertures while also being excellent for
landscape work stopped down.

FS Black Friday: Sigma EX 70-200 F2.8

2007-11-23 Thread Joseph Tainter
Give yourself a present.

This is the older, non-DG version. It is also the non-macro version
(which means that it is better at 200 mm than the current macro
version). I will part with it sadly, but just acquired the FA* 80-200 F2.8.

This one is a classic: Sharp across the zoom range and a very good
performer overall. I have had it about 4-1/2 years, but haven't used it
much since Pentax's DSLRs came out. The optics are fine, with a little
dust inside that won't affect images. (It hasn't affected mine.) The
body is perfect except for a small area at the tripod collar where the
paint has rubbed down to metal. This really is very small. It lacks the
hood and has a replacement front cap. The rear cap is original.

The current, macro version of this lens is not available in Pentax
mount, and it is not clear if it will be any time soon. When it does
become available, the macro version is not as good at 200 mm. as this lens.

On the used market this lens is nearly unobtainable. Many people want one.

Holiday price: U.S. $950.00 + shipping. Contact me if interested:

jtainter at mindspring dot com

It would bring this much on eBay, possibly a bit more.

Happy weekend, all.

I've never owned a lens designed primarily for portraiture, but from
what I understand, they are not supposed to be overly sharp. I am
puzzled, then, about the reports of the FA* 85 F1.4. It is reputed to be
very sharp close in, but a little worse for landscape shots than the FA 77.

Can anyone clarify?

The forthcoming DA 55 F1.4 is presumably a successor to the 85.

Thanks,

All important photos, downloaded setup for PS, Lumipix etc and

In your opinion Bill, should i look at getting the HD replaced(its
only a 80 gig at the moment). I know when this one was replaced 18
months or so, he mapped all of my files and programs from the old one,
and istalled the new HD the put the programes and files on the new
one..

Sounds like this is done all the time and not a big deal, ??eh.

M50/1.7 EX $60
M85/2 BGN $150 This one has a few paint nicks in the filter threads and
will not stop down to f22. I can see no difference between f16 and f22.
I contacted Eric Hendrickson last year about this problem, and he
told me that it might be a loose diaphragm pin. He also said that if it
was a diaphragm pin, he could fix it for about $30.

*ist (film body) with battery grip. There is a small rub on the body.
Otherwise, it's cosmetically in very nice shape. The shutter release
button on the body is not working properly. When depressed half-way it
will focus/meter/whatever it's supposed to do, but the shutter will not
release when the button is pushed all the way down. The shutter release
on the battery grip is working fine. I'm guessing the switch on the
body is either damaged or dirty. No guarantees. Includes body cap.
Make me an offer.

MX winder. Cosmetically rough, but it works. I bought this a while
back from a fellow PDMLer. I think I paid about $35 for it. So $30
sounds good to me.

Re: FA 77mm Ltd. - An observation

2007-11-23 Thread Stan Halpin
I am loosely involved with some research being done at the Institute
for Creative Technology - in one line of work (not my project) they
are trying to develop the technique for ultra-realistic computer-
generated avatars for use in training films, etc. If you use anything
more than a talking head with constant lighting, then the
representation becomes a huge challenge. Think of the variation in
lighting on a face as a person (avatar) moves from beneath a portico
in heavy shade, across a courtyard in full sun, through the shade of
a large tree, back into the sun, and then into shade from the portico
on the other side (now partially lit by reflected light from the
courtyard flagstones). To do this you need a model of the light color
and intensity (relatively easy) and a model of the reflectance
characteristics of the skin surface. A 2mm level-of-detail model of
the face is not sufficient, they are finding they need to go to 1mm
detail (individual pores). Otherwise large areas of the face look
very artificial, like someone with a combination of excessive Botax
plus excessive makeup.

All of which is to say that, while I agree with Mark that we do
recognize and observe others at a grosser level of detail, it is also
true that we recognize and are uncomfortable at some unconscious
level when there is less detail than we are able to discern in real
life. We can cope with a softened portrait and may even find it
pleasing, but we recognize that it is an artificial representation.

Two possible Photoshop techniques:

One:
Make a duplicate layer
Brighten it up a lot
Apply gaussian blur - a lot (20-30 pixel radius)
Change blend mode to overlay
Adjust opacity to taste

Two:
Use CleanSkinFX software
(http://www.mediachance.com/digicam/cleanskin.htm)
I find it a bit too extreme on its own, but if done to a duplicate
image and applied as a layer to the original, it can be useful -
experiment with changing opacity and erasing areas where you want
detail to show.

For individual blemishes I use the clone tool with the mode set to
lighten (or shadows & dark blemishes) or darken (for hotspots & light
blemishes). Dial the opacity down to around 15-10% and slowly build up
the necessary amount of "correction".

It works much better than the healing brush when dealing with skin.

I took some similar pics yesterday, actually, that I
may get around to posting this weekend.

Re: PESO: B-17 at Orlando Executive

2007-11-23 Thread Anthony Farr
The thanks go to you, Walter, for providing a great shot for me to
mess around with. I suspected that you were having an off-day with
your conversions, as you've confirmed. That's something I've also
experienced, not getting a handle on things and chasing my tail around
the colour wheel but never managing to hit the bulls-eye.

At least it's cheaper now that we don't need to burn a box of paper
getting our eyes tuned to correct tone and colour balance. In
darkroom days the culprit was viewing light quality, now monitor
calibrations are the bogeymen of picture quality. FWIW I don't have
my monitor calibrated by any software or instruments, and whenever it
has been calibrated I always run into problems, except years ago with
the late lamented Picture Publisher. I simply make sure that photos
of undoubted high quality I encounter around the web, as well as grey
step wedges and colour patches, look their best on my monitor. I
still trust my own eyes.

regards,
Anthony Farr

Re: FA 77mm Ltd. - An observation

2007-11-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
I find it's best to treat blemishes or wrinkles individually. A very
soft brush set at 30% opacity with a 30% fill rate can soften nicely.
The color, of course, is picked up from a directly adjacent part of
the face. That technique seems to work better than the healing brush.

These are purely lighting technique test photos. The resultant
portraits of Mum & Dad are a bonus.

They can moan all they want.

If I do much more of this in the future that may be worth considering.

I've been sitting here for the last hour or so trying various
softening techniques in PS and none of them are what I'd call
pleasing.

If you are doing pictures for yourself, then do what you want, but if you
are doing pictures for other people, then do what they want. If your models
are whining that your pictures aren't flattering, you should probably do
what you can to improve their look for them. If all it takes is a softening
filter, then that's what you need to do.
Dave, as a long time portrait shooter, I am going to go out on a limb here
and say that your instructor was full of manure.

Yup. I noticed that when I bought my first 77mm LTD. I still use softening

For Sale Friday: SF-1 and Super Program

2007-11-23 Thread David J Brooks
Hi Gang.

I have, half heartedly, offered these up in the past and am doing so again.

SF-1: KEH has one in bargin condition for $35.00. I think mine is in
that range and will sell for this. I have not used it for several
years, but it worked fine up until storage.

Super Program: KEH has on in Ex condition for$ 98.00 but mine is more
in ok condition. Worked fine until storage a few years ago. Did a
wedding with it in 2002 and with AF280T worked great. The lock switch
does not, and when you press the shutter 1/2 way to activate the
meter, you have to find the "sweet spot" but it does/did work.

Other than that its in pretty decent shape. Stored in my Lowpro for
about 3 years now. Last used around Oct 2004. Shot a few rolls of
slide film.
Asking $75.00 for this. Since our dollar is pretty much at par with
the US dollar, take your pick.:-)

Shipping is extra, and would preferr to deal with North American
buyers, but will try and accomadate buyes outside this zone. Its more
for th eshipping, its pretty dear, and may not be worth it.
