Subject: K20D long-lens, high ISO samples

Went out to the nature center today to give the K20D a workout with
my A400/5.6 and A2X-S converter. This combination wasn't really
working with the K10D or the *istD. Because the wide open stop is
f11, I had to go to at least ISO 800, even though I was working off
the tripod. Too much noise. The same was true for handholding the
A400/5.6 without the converter. One of the reasons I wanted the K20D
was to be able to use this lens and lens/converter combo efficiently.
Some preliminary samples follow. All were with High ISO noise
 reduction set to weak.

A4005.6 with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender, ISO 800, handheld:
 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7013146
 I like this one.

A4005.6 plus A2X-S converter with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender on
tripod, ISO 1000, exposure at meter reading, f8 @ 1/200th:
 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7013166size=lg.

A4005.6 plus A2X-S converter with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender on
 tripod, ISO 1000, exposure at f8 @ 1/1250th (about 2 1/2 stops under,
but flash is pumping up the exposure. I had to push the midrange
brightness on this which increased the noise, but it's still
 acceptable, IMO:

In brief, due to reduced noise at high ISO, the new camera is giving

Re: Heads-up: IE7 and GMail entanglement

2008-03-03 Thread AlunFoto
For me, problems began after installing a WindowsUpdate from
Microsoft. It may have coincided with an update from Google, though.

If diving into a conspiracy theory, I would prefer this one:
Microsoft has recently entered the marketplace where Google dominates;
online content and applications. They have a history for competitive
exclusion (4dos, Netscape, some trial in EU in 2004 which I can't
recall), so why not subtly change the implementation of scripting, for
example, to be incompatible with Google's plugins.

That could be what they've done by pure accident too, of course, but
accidents are not half as elating to imagine, are they? :-)

Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass

2008-03-03 Thread Jerome Reyes
I'm trying to figure out if the new Pentax DA* 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses
are worthy replacements for my Sigma 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. All four
lenses have a max. aperture of f2.8. All would be used on K10D bodies.
I've had the former two lenses for about 5 years now (since the MZ-S that
I no longer have) and am thinking that it's time to get something better
mated (?) with the digital bodies I own.

Experiences? Opinions? Thanks.

Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass

Jerome, the Sigma lenses that you have cover focal length form 24 mm
to 200 mm, whereas Pentax lenses cover from 16 mm to 135 mm. So that
Pentax range is wider and shorter. Not knowing your style I cannot
produce any reasonable opinion. However, if your Sigma lenses work for
you - why bother? I mean, if they answer your photographic needs, then
perhaps you don't need any change. If, however, you observe that these
Sigma lenses have problems such as AF or other compatibility issues
with K10D, then it would be a time to take action. I should however
point out that it does not follow from your original message.

Perhaps, instead, if you feel like shopping, you would consider a
primer lens ;-).

My assessment of the Pentax Photo Gallery is that it encourages
brain-damaged snap judgements. It provides 5 thumbnails at a time, and

way to skip voting on any images, and there's no neutral vote. Viewers
don't have to even look at full sized images before voting on them. It's
just too easy to vote thumbs down on everything, particularly images that
don't represent well in tiny thumbnails but may be breathtaking when viewed
   full size.

My recommendation would be to show voters more thumbnails, and require
images to be viewed full size for, say, 15 seconds before allowing a vote
 to
   be recorded.

The Pentax Photo Gallery buggered themselves as soon as they went to peer
 voting, and from the
looks of it, have fucked things up even worse. It's too bad, as the concept
 is quite good, and I
am sure that the pictures are very nice.
I stopped looking at the thing when they decided that judging by
 incompetents was de rigeur.

I don't vote any more, so your ok now Bill.

I have both the 16-45/4 and the 16-50/2.8. Both are very nice and
capable lenses. My current favourite of the two is the /2.8, but I may
be defending my investment here... It would certainly be a nice
replacement for your Sigma.

For telezoom, I have an ancient Sigma EX 70-200/2.8. Bought from Cotty
when he went to the Dark Side. Once had the opportunity to test it
side-by-side with the FA* 70-200/2.8 with the *istD, and didn't see
the point in switching. The new DA* has a shorter range, so think
carefully if you can live with that. Remember also that there's a
DA*60-250/4 emerging from the pipelines in July.

Not really. For the most part, they look almost good, a few will
need to be inverted (scanned backwards), and a couple were obviously

OT Stupid Purolator

2008-03-03 Thread David J Brooks
Ar.

Got back two days late from Fargo,
(should have been on Friday, but got home late Sunday) only to have
the wife tell me Purolator stopped at the house Friday
with my K10D shipped from Pentax.

As always with these groups, they show up when no one is home, and
leave the little sticky telling you were you package is being held
hostage.

Now i have to play phone tag, and get them to resend to the house, or
bite the bullet and go get it, about a 45 minute drive.

I refuse to do the latter, and always get them to re deliver, on their
time and mileage.

I know i told Pentax i would come an get it.

Oh well, if the focus is fixed, i';ll settle down.

Subject: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass

I used both of the Pentax lenses for a week just after they were released and
found them both to
be excellent. I don't understand why a person would put third party glass onto
a Pentax, as it
defeats the purpose of buying Pentax in the first place, which is being able to
use their
lenses.

Pentax LX, auto/TTL flash and slow speeds

2008-03-03 Thread Vic Mortelmans
Hi,

Using my AF280T on my LX, I notice that there's no way to combine
auto/TTL functions with slow speeds. The camera always switches to the
flash sync speed, and I don't find a way to override this.

I can use my Spotmatic or ES combined with the same flash in auto mode
to get slow speeds with flash, but it's a pity I cannot do so with the
advanced metering (especially in low light) of my LX.

I guess I could use any non-Pentax automatic flash to do the same on the
LX, in a way 'fooling' the LX in thinking there's no flash on. But then
there's the question of compatibility: the LX should at least properly
sync with the flash!

Any advices on what type of flash I could be looking for (preferrably a
cheapish model on the second hand market)?

Goeten,
Vic

PS. my wife will by buying a Canon DSLR shortly (don't know which model
yet) --- maybe an opportunity to find a Canon flash that would both work
on the DSLR and on the LX ?

Remember with the LX you are dealing with relatively old technology, and flash
was it's Achilles
heel, so to speak.
I never liked the way the LX handled flash, as it has an annoying habit of not
firing the flash
in backlit situations.
Having said that, the LX does sync properly with your 280T, but Pentax chose to
lock the way the
camera works with dedicated flash units. If you don't like the way it works
with a dedicated
flash, then go to a basic auto flash instead.
I believe you can disable the forced sync by covering the small pin to the left
of the sync
terminal on the hot shoe.
My own advice would be to use a good quality non dedicated flash such as a
Vivitar 285.

Filling a gap in the lens lineup - suggestions?

2008-03-03 Thread Charles Robinson
Currently I have a few lenses which I always use:

  Kit 18-55
  Tamron 28-75
  A-28mm f2.8
  FA-50 f1.7
  Zenitar 16mm

Those are the basics which I carry around most of the time I am
buying a K10D and handing down my DS to my daughter for her wedding.
Since the K10D is not coming with a lens, I have a decision to make
about lenses. I think my daughter would be quite satisfied with the
18-55 so I'm thinking of handing that down to her with the DS and
getting something to replace it for myself. This is where it gets
tricky.

I've always wanted something in an ultra-wide - most of the time when
I use the kit lens it's for that 18mm setting. So I'm thinking that
something like the Pentax 12-24 would be pretty good, leaving only a
small gap between the 24 on the Pentax and the 28 on the Tamron.

But another line of thought is that the 16-50 f2.8 would be an awesome
lens to put on the K10D as it would give me something all-around and
weatherproof to boot. But I'm not sure how rah-rah WIDE 16mm is on
the 16-50. Plus it does overlap the Tamron by quite a bit.

Size, weight, cost are about the same for each.

Gosh, what would YOU do if you had to choose between these? Would it
be smarter to just get the venerable 16-45 (almost the same zoom range
as the 16-50 and about $300 cheaper)? How wide does a non-fisheye
16mm lens look? And is it reasonable to think that a person could
use the 12-24 as a walkaround lens or is it just too-too wide for
regular photography?

As you can tell, I have no idea what to do right now. I'm just
buzzing around in circles.

Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass

2008-03-03 Thread Jerome Reyes
Thanks to all who replied. David Savage probably had me convinced
immediately with his comments of:

what's the point of owning Pentax if you're not going to get
the one part of the system that they do exceptionally well.

Also, to answer W. Robb's question of...
why a person would put third party
 glass onto a Pentax

Well, sometimes *price* is the driving factor, and at the time, the price
of the FA* 70-200mm f2.8 Pentax lens was quite prohibitive. I've *always*
wanted Pentax lenses in my kit, but until now the prices didn't make that
possible given the speed I needed. Hence, brand loyalty is admittedly part
of my incentive to switch. Granted, they don't build the new lenses like
they used to (I think I could very well knock someone out with one blow
from my Sigma lens)... but the DA* lens prices (plus gainful employment)
at least allow me to consider these options for a change.

Boris asked:
if your Sigma lenses work for you - why bother?

They do work for me... but since people are actually paying for these
pictures now, my thinking is that if there is something better and I can
afford it, then I want it.

Boris also mentioned the difference in focal lengths; and trust me, that's
a concern too. Right now, my wedding kit is seamless (Pentax 12-24 in the
bag, Sigma 24-70 70-200 on K10D bodies) so these two lenses are
obviously going to mess that up. However, the 16-50 / 50-135mm range
will simply put me back to where most (zoom using) wedding / portrait
photogs were prior to digital anyway: 24-200mm equivalent. So I think I'll
adjust just fine without the long end (just take three steps forward)...
as long as the Pentax 50-135mm is still very sharp at the long end (at
least at f4.0, if not wide open ???). The part that I don't like is
the overlap between the 16-50mm and the 12-24mm, but in the end that may
be a good thing since it will probably translate to less lens swapping
during a shoot. In the end, I think I'll gain more than I'll lose from the
shift in focal length. But only time will tell.

By swapping, I'll also improve on my minimum focusing distances a tad. So
overall, I'm leaning towards the swap, but I still wanted to run the query
through the list to see what you guys thought. Also, if anyone wants the
inside track on buying my Sigma lenses from me if and when I pull the
trigger, please contact me off-list.

Jostein said:
 Remember also that there's a DA*60-250/4

Man, that's tempting. What would be AWESOME for when I eventually get back
to animal stuff... but for weddings portraits, that's way more focal
length than I need at the expense of an f-stop that I really like having.
Still very tempting though because switching to the pentax lenses would
leave me with NOTHING between the long end of the 50-135mm and my 300mm
f2.8. That seems like a HUGE range of emptiness.

..emptiness that can be used to justify future purchases hmmm.
Decisions. Decisions (ugh). Maybe I'll just stick with my Optio :o)

Well, you can never have too many lenses
A non fish eye 16mm looks surprisingly like a 24mm on the 35mm film format. I
love my 12-24, and
was looking seriously at the 16-50 until I remembered that I have somethning

I think the 12-24 is rather wide for a general purpose lens, I find it is more
of a specialty

be the better

While there's something cool about ultra-ultra wide FoV, I find

examine my lens use from 2007, whether with a zoom or a prime, I find
the greatest frequency of keepers in the range from 20-30 mm.

I don't know the LX at all, but can't you just set the exposure time

TTL flash metering I've used will still control the flash output that

No. Unfortunately, with a dedicated flash, the LX reverts to 1/80 second unless

Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass

2008-03-03 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Jerome,

Some of it depends on usage. Obviously the 16-50 is much wider than
the 24-70. The 70-200 is longer than the 50-135 but it is much
bigger and heavier.

For me, at one point I had a Tamron 28-75/2.8 and Tokina 80-200/2.8.
This was primarily for wedding work, but I found that the Tamron was
not wide enough and the Tokina was way too heavy to work quickly and
for long periods of time handheld.

So for me, the 16-50 and 50-135 make a much better set - wider and
smaller/lighter. You may need to evaluate more on those terms.

 Hi,

Using my AF280T on my LX, I notice that there's no way to combine
auto/TTL functions with slow speeds. The camera always switches to the
flash sync speed, and I don't find a way to override this.

Isn't this the behavior that Cotty was able to defeat with his AF280T
 modification?

DA 17-70 f4

2008-03-03 Thread Steve Desjardins
Has anyone heard much about this lens yet? I'm very interested. I like
the constant aperture and this will be mainly an outdoor lens. I'm
assuming DA16-45 f4 quality with SDM, i.e., the high end kit lens. I'm
wondering if it will be weather sealed.

Probably a better advice on the longer term. Non-Pentax side question:
will this type of flash also be of use on a modern Canon DSLR?

Thanks for the advice!

Only way I was able to shoot slow sync with that combination was to
shoot on 'manual' flash setting and do the math.
It always pleased me that the 280 would release the 1/80 shutter for
such shooting.

I don't know the LX at all, but can't you just set the exposure
 time
you want to use manually along with the aperture? Most cameras with
TTL flash metering I've used will still control the flash output
 that
  way.

No. Unfortunately, with a dedicated flash, the LX reverts to 1/80
 second unless the control pin
 is covered.

Announcing Foto8 - A New Way for Photography
In Print, Online, On Display

In April 2008 Foto8, a London based publishing company will release a
new version
of its publication, 8 magazine, as a photography biannual. Foto8's new
magazine
runs alongside it's newly re-designed website, foto8.com. This year
Foto8 marks 10
years since its creation in 1998 as a home for photojournalism. Now,
as it has in the
last decade, Foto8 displays and interprets photojournalism in ways
that are helping
to define the purpose and use of contemporary photography.

The launch of these exciting new developments reinforces Foto8's
dedication to
exploring the relationship between art and journalism while fostering
a network and
community that represents both the creators and the audience.

In Print: From April, 8 magazine will be released as a 200-page
magazine featuring
photo stories by the top talents, emerging names and most influential
photographers
of the period. Other sections will cover Works in Progress, Book
Previews, Interviews,
New Fiction and Columns by distinguished writers.

A UK Magazine Design Award Winner for three consecutive years (2005,
2006,
2007), 8 magazine will use this opportunity to showcase its new design
in keeping
with its dynamic reputation.

Online: The new foto8.com brings Foto8 contributors and members closer
together,
creating a space to share, comment and debate photography. It is a
home for all
of Foto8's activities as well as a meeting place for the photography
community
worldwide. Users can find dynamic photo stories alongside short films
and
documentaries; other users' comments and discussions; Foto8's weekly
reports and
exclusive commentaries.

On Display: HOST is Foto8's gallery, founded in 2005. In 2008 its
programme
of face-to-face engagements with photography will expand: new
exhibitions,
screenings, talks, professional folio reviews, and monthly book club
meetings. The
highlight of the year will be the Foto8 Summer Show. This will be an
open exhibition
and print sale of submitted photographs, culminating in a new annual
award which
will go to best in show.

I agree with this too. The modern Vivitar 285 HV or a Sunpak 383 have
very low trigger voltage ( 6V) and can be used on any modern DSLR or
fixed lens digicam safely. I use the Sunpak 383 ... it lacks the zoom
head but I is easier to fit with the Lumiquest diffusers and bounce

Re: Filling a gap in the lens lineup - suggestions?

2008-03-03 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I didn't like the DA16-45 very much. I found it bulky and its
reverse direction zooming made it an awkward lens to use at wide
angle settings ... it doesn't balance well. Felt the same way about
the (even larger and heavier) Canon EF 24-75/2.8L when I had it.

I have the DA*16-50/2.8. It is a better balanced lens than the
DA16-45 and feels nicer in use. I still prefer using the 14, 21, 43
mm primes in this range due to their smaller, handier size and
weight, but the 16-50 proves to be a fine performer and minimizes
lens changes when you're working with quickly changing circumstances.

16mm focal length on the DSLRs nets the same field of view that a
24mm lens provides on traditional 35mm film cameras. That's a pretty
wide angle field of view, about 8% greater than what you're used to
seeing with the 18-55 mm lens (84 diagonal degrees vs 77.4). My long-
standing widest useful field of view, personally, has been the 90
degree diagonal provided by the 14mm on the DSLRs ... If you want
that, you'll need the DA12-24/4 or DA14/2.8.

While there's something cool about ultra-ultra wide FoV, I find
practical application of such FoV to be fairly limited. When I
examine my lens use from 2007, whether with a zoom or a prime, I find
the greatest frequency of keepers in the range from 20-30 mm.

Good luck!

Godfrey
