Re: Heads-up: IE7 and GMail entanglement
For me, problems began after installing a WindowsUpdate from Microsoft. It may have coincided with an update from Google, though. If diving into a conspiracy theory, I would prefer this one: Microsoft has recently entered the marketplace where Google dominates; online content and applications. They have a history for competitive exclusion (4dos, Netscape, some trial in EU in 2004 which I can't recall), so why not subtly change the implementation of scripting, for example, to be incompatible with Google's plugins. That could be what they've done by pure accident too, of course, but accidents are not half as elating to imagine, are they? :-) Jostein 2008/2/28, Mark Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED]: AlunFoto wrote: I like IE7. Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
I'm trying to figure out if the new Pentax DA* 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses are worthy replacements for my Sigma 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. All four lenses have a max. aperture of f2.8. All would be used on K10D bodies. I've had the former two lenses for about 5 years now (since the MZ-S that I no longer have) and am thinking that it's time to get something better mated (?) with the digital bodies I own. Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
Jerome, the Sigma lenses that you have cover focal length form 24 mm to 200 mm, whereas Pentax lenses cover from 16 mm to 135 mm. So that Pentax range is wider and shorter. Not knowing your style I cannot produce any reasonable opinion. However, if your Sigma lenses work for you - why bother? I mean, if they answer your photographic needs, then perhaps you don't need any change. If, however, you observe that these Sigma lenses have problems such as AF or other compatibility issues with K10D, then it would be a time to take action. I should however point out that it does not follow from your original message. Perhaps, instead, if you feel like shopping, you would consider a primer lens ;-). -- Boris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It provides 5 thumbnails at a time, and viewers must vote on all images before getting to the next set. There's no way to skip voting on any images, and there's no neutral vote. Viewers don't have to even look at full sized images before voting on them. It's just too easy to vote thumbs down on everything, particularly images that don't represent well in tiny thumbnails but may be breathtaking when viewed full size. My recommendation would be to show voters more thumbnails, and require images to be viewed full size for, say, 15 seconds before allowing a vote to be recorded. The Pentax Photo Gallery buggered themselves as soon as they went to peer voting, and from the looks of it, have fucked things up even worse. It's too bad, as the concept is quite good, and I am sure that the pictures are very nice. I stopped looking at the thing when they decided that judging by incompetents was de rigeur. Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
I have both the 16-45/4 and the 16-50/2.8. Both are very nice and capable lenses. My current favourite of the two is the /2.8, but I may be defending my investment here... It would certainly be a nice replacement for your Sigma. For telezoom, I have an ancient Sigma EX 70-200/2.8. Bought from Cotty when he went to the Dark Side. Once had the opportunity to test it side-by-side with the FA* 70-200/2.8 with the *istD, and didn't see the point in switching. The new DA* has a shorter range, so think carefully if you can live with that. Remember also that there's a DA*60-250/4 emerging from the pipelines in July. Pentax LX, auto/TTL flash and slow speeds
Hi, Using my AF280T on my LX, I notice that there's no way to combine auto/TTL functions with slow speeds. The camera always switches to the flash sync speed, and I don't find a way to override this. I can use my Spotmatic or ES combined with the same flash in auto mode to get slow speeds with flash, but it's a pity I cannot do so with the advanced metering (especially in low light) of my LX. I guess I could use any non-Pentax automatic flash to do the same on the LX, in a way 'fooling' the LX in thinking there's no flash on. But then there's the question of compatibility: the LX should at least properly sync with the flash! Any advices on what type of flash I could be looking for (preferrably a cheapish model on the second hand market)? I never liked the way the LX handled flash, as it has an annoying habit of not firing the flash in backlit situations. Having said that, the LX does sync properly with your 280T, but Pentax chose to lock the way the camera works with dedicated flash units. If you don't like the way it works with a dedicated flash, then go to a basic auto flash instead. I believe you can disable the forced sync by covering the small pin to the left of the sync terminal on the hot shoe. My own advice would be to use a good quality non dedicated flash such as a Vivitar 285. Filling a gap in the lens lineup - suggestions?
Currently I have a few lenses which I always use: Kit 18-55 Tamron 28-75 A-28mm f2.8 FA-50 f1.7 Zenitar 16mm Those are the basics which I carry around most of the time I am buying a K10D and handing down my DS to my daughter for her wedding. Since the K10D is not coming with a lens, I have a decision to make about lenses. I think my daughter would be quite satisfied with the 18-55 so I'm thinking of handing that down to her with the DS and getting something to replace it for myself. This is where it gets tricky. I've always wanted something in an ultra-wide - most of the time when I use the kit lens it's for that 18mm setting. So I'm thinking that something like the Pentax 12-24 would be pretty good, leaving only a small gap between the 24 on the Pentax and the 28 on the Tamron. But another line of thought is that the 16-50 f2.8 would be an awesome lens to put on the K10D as it would give me something all-around and weatherproof to boot. But I'm not sure how rah-rah WIDE 16mm is on the 16-50. Plus it does overlap the Tamron by quite a bit. Size, weight, cost are about the same for each. Gosh, what would YOU do if you had to choose between these? Would it be smarter to just get the venerable 16-45 (almost the same zoom range as the 16-50 and about $300 cheaper)? How wide does a non-fisheye 16mm lens look? And is it reasonable to think that a person could use the 12-24 as a walkaround lens or is it just too-too wide for regular photography? As you can tell, I have no idea what to do right now. I'm just buzzing around in circles. -Charles -- Charles Robinson - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Minneapolis, MN http://charles.robinsontwins.org -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
Thanks to all who replied. David Savage probably had me convinced immediately with his comments of: what's the point of owning Pentax if you're not going to get the one part of the system that they do exceptionally well. Also, to answer W. Robb's question of... why a person would put third party glass onto a Pentax Well, sometimes *price* is the driving factor, and at the time, the price of the FA* 70-200mm f2.8 Pentax lens was quite prohibitive. I've *always* wanted Pentax lenses in my kit, but until now the prices didn't make that possible given the speed I needed. Hence, brand loyalty is admittedly part of my incentive to switch. Granted, they don't build the new lenses like they used to (I think I could very well knock someone out with one blow from my Sigma lens)... but the DA* lens prices (plus gainful employment) at least allow me to consider these options for a change. Boris asked: if your Sigma lenses work for you - why bother? They do work for me... but since people are actually paying for these pictures now, my thinking is that if there is something better and I can afford it, then I want it. Boris also mentioned the difference in focal lengths; and trust me, that's a concern too. Right now, my wedding kit is seamless (Pentax 12-24 in the bag, Sigma 24-70 70-200 on K10D bodies) so these two lenses are obviously going to mess that up. However, the 16-50 / 50-135mm range will simply put me back to where most (zoom using) wedding / portrait photogs were prior to digital anyway: 24-200mm equivalent. So I think I'll adjust just fine without the long end (just take three steps forward)... as long as the Pentax 50-135mm is still very sharp at the long end (at least at f4.0, if not wide open ???). The part that I don't like is the overlap between the 16-50mm and the 12-24mm, but in the end that may be a good thing since it will probably translate to less lens swapping during a shoot. In the end, I think I'll gain more than I'll lose from the shift in focal length. But only time will tell. By swapping, I'll also improve on my minimum focusing distances a tad. So overall, I'm leaning towards the swap, but I still wanted to run the query through the list to see what you guys thought. Also, if anyone wants the inside track on buying my Sigma lenses from me if and when I pull the trigger, please contact me off-list. Jostein said: Remember also that there's a DA*60-250/4 Man, that's tempting. What would be AWESOME for when I eventually get back to animal stuff... but for weddings portraits, that's way more focal length than I need at the expense of an f-stop that I really like having. Still very tempting though because switching to the pentax lenses would leave me with NOTHING between the long end of the 50-135mm and my 300mm f2.8. That seems like a HUGE range of emptiness. ..emptiness that can be used to justify future purchases hmmm. Decisions. Decisions (ugh). And I have to admit, I kind of like the idea of being outside in a drizzly situation or something and just being able to take out the camera and shoot something without (much) regard to the water coming down. How often I'd do that is debatable, but there is a sort of neato factor there. Thank you for the suggestions! While there's something cool about ultra-ultra wide FoV, I find practical application of such FoV to be fairly limited. When I examine my lens use from 2007, whether with a zoom or a prime, I find the greatest frequency of keepers in the range from 20-30 mm. I tend to notice 28mm in a majority of shots, but I don't know if that's because it's what I like, or if it's because I've pulled the Tamron into its widest zoom and it just won't go any further. :-) -Charles -- Charles Robinson - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Minneapolis, MN http://charles.robinsontwins.org -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
Hello Jerome, Some of it depends on usage. Obviously the 16-50 is much wider than the 24-70. The 70-200 is longer than the 50-135 but it is much bigger and heavier. For me, at one point I had a Tamron 28-75/2.8 and Tokina 80-200/2.8. This was primarily for wedding work, but I found that the Tamron was not wide enough and the Tokina was way too heavy to work quickly and for long periods of time handheld. So for me, the 16-50 and 50-135 make a much better set - wider and smaller/lighter. You may need to evaluate more on those terms. -- Best regards, Bruce Monday, March 3, 2008, 4:01:50 AM, you wrote: JR I'm trying to figure out if the new Pentax DA* 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses JR are worthy replacements for my Sigma 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. Re: Filling a gap in the lens lineup - suggestions?
I didn't like the DA16-45 very much. I found it bulky and its reverse direction zooming made it an awkward lens to use at wide angle settings ... it doesn't balance well. Felt the same way about the (even larger and heavier) Canon EF 24-75/2.8L when I had it. I have the DA*16-50/2.8. It is a better balanced lens than the DA16-45 and feels nicer in use. I still prefer using the 14, 21, 43 mm primes in this range due to their smaller, handier size and weight, but the 16-50 proves to be a fine performer and minimizes lens changes when you're working with quickly changing circumstances. 16mm focal length on the DSLRs nets the same field of view that a 24mm lens provides on traditional 35mm film cameras. That's a pretty wide angle field of view, about 8% greater than what you're used to seeing with the 18-55 mm lens (84 diagonal degrees vs 77.4). My long- standing widest useful field of view, personally, has been the 90 degree diagonal provided by the 14mm on the DSLRs ... If you want that, you'll need the DA12-24/4 or DA14/2.8. While there's something cool about ultra-ultra wide FoV, I find practical application of such FoV to be fairly limited. When I examine my lens use from 2007, whether with a zoom or a prime, I find the greatest frequency of keepers in the range from 20-30 mm. Good luck!
