RE: PESO 2008 - 46 - GDG

2008-03-24 Thread Bob W
Picasso never repeated himself, and his art is certainly not dead. I
have an edition of his sketchbooks, plus several books of his drawings
and paintings. What really stands out for me is the energetic
creativity and constant change and experimentation, allied with
astonishing discipline, single-mindedness, self-criticism and
knowledge of art history.

I can thoroughly recommend the book Je suis le cahier de Pablo
Picasso to anyone who is interested in seeing how he worked up his
ideas into their final form. A visit to the Musee Picasso in Paris is
also time well spent - not least because it is such a beautiful
building.

RE: PESO: On Magnolia Plantation

That's beautifully composed. The relationship between the tree, the
fence and the road are very well handled.

I had no idea magnolias grew so large. Here in London people train
magnolias over their front door on rows of town houses and it looks
really beautiful when they're in flower, but of course they never get
much bigger than large vines.

Pentax good deed for Easter Sunday

2008-03-24 Thread David J Brooks
My dressage show was over this past weekend. Sunday was not busy at
all. Riders from 7:30 to 10:15 and we were done.

One of the riders husband was shooting her and her friend, which is
fine with me, and i saw he had a Pentax Dslr. I asked if it was the
K1000 or K10D. K1000 was his reply. Oh you know this camera. I replied
i have been using Pentax since 1971.

Oh maybe you can help me here.

He asked a large number of how to do questions in between riders, and
i am happy to say was able to answer them all:-)

I told him how i was shooting, settings, keeping the back lite window
out of the shots. He was happier with the results, but because he was
using the 18-250, he had to ISO at 3200. He would settle for grainy
shots as long as they were brighter and better.:-)

I felt the store that sold him the camera had given him some mis
information, so i told him what i knew in that regards.

So there ya go, my good deed for the month

I still hate SD cards as well. The little plastic bars that separate the
contacts tend to start coming apart. And when one of them gets in the way of
the contact, the card won't read. I've had to remove some to access my files. I
would be willing to make the camera larger if that means I could go back to CF
cards.

Its been colder than the last 3-4 years, thats for sure. Almost a
record snow year. But, for some reason the wall under the kitchen

It feels nice though to see them, after this winter.

Tell that to Picasso. Oh, right...

No, we are not all Pentax Fanboi's.

I'd be happier with Pentax if they produced a pro-class body. Right
now, they have the best-featured, advanced amateur class DSLR body for
the money ... there's good mileage to be had out of that. But there's
a world of difference between what Pentax is offering as a top of the
line vs what Olympus, Nikon, Canon and (soon) Sony are offering in pro-
class equipment.

Whenever I've been using the K10D for a while and pick up the Olympus
E-1, the E-1 shocks me with how smooth, quiet, solid and capable it
feels, how every control moves precisely and securely, how much
*better* the viewfinder is for manual focus, etc. And it's a 2003
design.

I want the same feeling out of a Pentax body to properly match the
Limited lenses.

I've had the plastic dividers fall off two SanDisk Extreme III cards. Never
had a problem with CF during four years of use. I've heard stories about bent
pins but have neveer run across anyone who actually experienced that. On the
other hand, I've rarely met a user of SD cards who hasn't experienced some kind
of failure. Most common seems to be the locking tab falling off. I had that
happen to an Extreme III card as well. I haven't had any breakage problems with
Transcend cards, but I did have one that just quit working after a few hours of
use. I want my CF cards back!

I've got 6-8 sd cards.
One fast, 'no name' card I used frequently had the plastic covering fail.
First just a chip, then a crack and the housing folded up.
Not too good for pushing into the K10D spring loaded card slot.
I super glued it back together, but lost the write lock and that was that.
The slot on the K10D didn't like me adding some scotch tape to the
card to unlock it.
I spent $17 and bought another one.
I wouldn't have a CF card with 44 pins...talk about asking for trouble!

Been there, done that. In 2004, I had to send an ist-D to Colorado for
repair due to bent CF pins. The mistake cost me $134.70 in repairs (plus
shipping). With that in mind, i was ecstatic to switch to SD cards with
the K10-D.

Also as an aside, FWIW, numerous retailers have Sandisk cards essentially
on sale. 4GB extreme III @ 49.99, minus rebate equates to about $15 a
card. I've picked up 4 already. Just thought I'd share the info.

I intended my fanbois post to be facetious to begin with. Obviously, not
all Leica/Harley/Apple/Pentax(?)/etc. owners are fanbois. Certain brands do
have very vocal fanbois, however.

As Mark Roberts pointed out, we seem to have a reverse-fanboi
phenomenon--people who love to hate the brand and bitterly criticize every
product that Pentax ships. These people can't seem to just walk away from
the brand, however. In addition, they do not seem to be fanbois of
alternate brands (like Canon or Nikon).

I kind of ignored this but my interest is in the glass. I have a lot of
classic glass. Only Pentax will allow me to use most of it with a
minimum of fuss, (because it's K mount of course). If Pentax ever stops
allowing the use of my classic lenses I'd go to the manufacturer with
the best disposable equipment as opposed to the manufacturer with the
disposable equipment that uses my lenses. Two years ago that would have
been Canon, now It might be Nikon or Sony. Film Bodies last for
decades, digital bodies are viable for only years, (I doubt my *ist-D

OT Web Bots and Acrobat Files

2008-03-24 Thread William Robb
Hi,
I publish a newsletter for my local dog club in the Adobe PDF format.
Something that has been brought to my attention is that search engines are
indexing the content
of the files, and are extracting information that we would prefer not be
published in a casual
web search.

So, when I was publishing the Pentax Users' Gallery, I learned that I could put
a robots.txt
file in the root directory of the website which would allow me to prevent
search engines from
indexing certain pages. I recall that i protected the galleries themselves, and
left the index
page open.

Does anyone know if there is a way of preventing search engines from indexing
the contents of a
PDF file, without actually putting password security on the file?

Thanks

In his declining years Picasso would draw three sweeping lines on a

I can thoroughly recommend the book Je suis le cahier de Pablo

Based on the size of some of the Olympus bodies I don't think the camera
has to be any larger. I've actually had an SD card case split at a
seam. It's a good Lexar Card from a reputable store but getting it
replaced wouldn't be worth the hassle as it's now hopelessly outdated.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I still hate SD cards as well. The little plastic bars that separate the
contacts tend to start coming apart. And when one of them gets in the way of
the contact, the card won't read. I've had to remove some to access my files.
I would be willing to make the camera larger if that means I could go back to
 CF cards.

Not a Peso: Can someone identify this bird?

2008-03-24 Thread P. J. Alling
While I was out shooting on easter, someone pointed out this little guy
hiding in the rushes. I think he's some kind of rail but I can't find
anything that looks like him in any identification guide. (That doesn't
mean he's not there just that I'm not much of a birder). The image
isn't technically all that good, it's the center 1/6th of a the frame
and to get even this close I had to combine the Vivitar S1 600mm with
the 1.7x adapter. So there are all kinds of problems with the image.

I've had the plastic dividers fall off two SanDisk Extreme III cards.
Never had a problem with CF during four years of use. I've heard stories
about bent pins but have neveer run across anyone who actually experienced
that. On the other hand, I've rarely met a user of SD cards who hasn't
experienced some kind of failure. Most common seems to be the locking tab
