Ah, ok ... it's the "i must tell everyone what i'm doing moment my
moment in my life because I need to be with them constantly" site.
Or, in a hope for succinctness, it's the "you too can be 15 year old
teen queen" site. I get it.

No, I don't use twitter. ;-)

We have quite a few new younger guys (17-22) in the office who are
into cars. As it was a chance to help the older hands get to know them
in a social situation, something that would be fun for them was
selected.

I would have preferred a round of golf myself, but the karting was fun :-)

RE: Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24

2008-05-06 Thread Rod Connan
I have found the Sigma 10-20 very resistant to flare.

The sun was behind very thin cloud in this shot,
http://rconn.zenfolio.com/p1019193613/?photo=h39448641#960792129 and you can
tell this by the water reflection. I am satisfied :)

One thing I would consider is what you want to use the lens for. For
me, wide angles are generally for landscape photography and this
introduces an additional issue to consider - the sun... The Pentax SMC
coating has always been far better than Sigma at avoiding flare and
ghosting and for this reason alone I would strongly consider it.

Don't get me wrong - I have a lot of Sigma glass and many of the EX
lenses are great but these particular lenses are going to have a bug
hunk of glass catching the sunlight.

I think these are both very fine lenses, and neither would be a bad
choice but my money would be on the Pentax. Mind you I also buy my
Pentax gear from somewhere that give me a free 3 year guarantee which
helps.

Hi list!

I am planning to buy a WIDE angle lens. I am hesitating between the
Sigma 10-20 and the Pentax 12-24 (maybe Pentax 10-17 Fisheye)

As the price the Pentax 12-24 is almost 2 times as the Sigma 10-20 but
as I read the reviews both are good lens. Actually I am wondering if the

Pentax one worths it's price compared to the Sigma one or should I go
for the Sigma? Is there any noticeable IQ or CA advantage to the Pentax?

Some says the Sigma becomes best if stopped down... but I would like to
have a lens which is good at wide open too.

So any advice? Is the Pentax that much better than the Sigma as the
price shows or not? :D

Thanks,
.t

Thanks David. Yes, I suspect they yield to highways in Michigan as
well. Not to mention landscapers. The company that "did" my
 neighbors
yard wiped out a bunch of them, despite the fact that I pointed
 them
out. Overzealous homeowners also kill them by raking away the
 leaves
from under trees. Trillium loves a nice thick blanket of decaying
 leaves.

Re: Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24

2008-05-06 Thread Paul Stenquist
The Pentax lens is excellent. It has been a money maker and a
pleasure for me. I have no experience with that particular Sigma
lens, but my experience with the Sigma brand in general would give me
pause. And I wouldn't buy a fisheye unless you want to shoot fisheye
pics. Yes, you can correct in post, but you'll sacrifice image
quality. Every time you move a pixel you lose something.

Re: Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24

2008-05-06 Thread Rick Womer
My 10-17 is my favorite lens. Not the most used
(that's the 16-45), but my favorite. The fisheye

FS, um, Tuesday - Books

2008-05-06 Thread Scott Loveless
I have the following available priced at 1/3 cover. Feel free to gripe
about it, because I really don't what I should be charging and thought
1/3 was a good starting point. I'm flexible. The books are all
"users". They're not pristine, but they're not torn up, either. The
corners may be smashed a bit, and the covers scratched, but the bindings
are intact and all the pages are there.

"The Book of Photography" by John Hedgecoe. Hardback. $10 (Decent
section on nude photography.)

"New Introductory Photography Course" by John Hedgecoe. Paperback. $8
(Pretty much a rehash of "The Book of Photography". Nudes, too!)

"Black and White Photography, a Basic Manual, 2nd ed., revised" by Henry
Horenstein. Paperback. $8 (I love this book, but I have the newer
edition, so I'm not using it any more.)

"How to Photograph Children" by Lisa Jane. Paperback. $8 (This one is
complete fluff, so low ball me on it. I'd feel guilty actually charging
$8.)

"The Ansel Adams Guide, Book 1, Basic Techniques" by John P. Schaefer.
Paperback. $13 (I haven't opened this one since getting The Camera,
The Negative and The Print.)

"The Annabel Williams Book of Wedding and Portrait Photography".
Hardback. $10 (Nicely done, trendoid wedding photos. Lots of cross
processed slide film.)

Prices do not include shipping. I can ship USPS or UPS from 17070.
USPS media mail is probably cheapest if you don't mind waiting for an
eternity. Should you be venturing forth to Grandfather Mountain, I can
drag them along and you can pay me in beer. Or lenses. But no beer
goggles, please.

Re: back- or frontfocus?

2008-05-06 Thread Rick Womer
Andreas,

I have no experience with the K20D, but when I used
the 1.1 firmware to adjust the focus on my K10D (which
was back-focusing), it benefitted all of my lenses.
It has made the camera much more rewarding to shoot
with.

There is a definite tendency toward hysteria (not to
mention hyper-obsessive pixel-peeping, leading to
hysteria) on both PentaxForums and DPR. Many people
there just need to take a deeep breath and go out
and shoot.

I may be able to take you up on that beer in late
June.

RE: Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24

2008-05-06 Thread Rob Brigham

Thanks,

A Tair 3a from a Zenit Photosniper which an old design 300mm f4.5 or
perhaps one of these

Used ones of both turn up for a song on the bay...

Just for a laugh I modified a Photosniper to electrically fire the
*ist-dl, much easier than dragging a tripod through the undergrowth but
can have a tendency to get you noticed by the authorities. takes quite
nice pictures though.

I must confess though, neither of these two lenses could be described as
small or light.

Re: Enable me!

I like my Tamron SP 300 mm f5.6

It's an adaptall, manual focus lens and can be had for around $100,
although it doesn't
show up on ebay as often as it used to.

It's a bit slow but entirely adequate for the sort of photography I do
with it. You can also attach the special SP 2x adapter but it then
becomes *very* slow.

I also have the FA 80-320 mentioned by Paul - it's a very good lens and
might be had for under $200.

Cheers

Re: Enable me!

Anything good will be $300 to $500 if it's a sleeper, or very old, a lot
more if it's well regarded, unless you get very lucky. That's used by
the way, you won't find anything really sharp at the long end new in
that price range. If you're shooting digital and can live with the
green button solution, keep your eyes peeled at KEH for a smcp-m* 300mm
in bargain condition, you may find one for less than $300. Right now
KEH has an Ex+ SMC-P 300. I have no experience with them but they're
supposed to be very good, sharper with better contrast than the A*/M*
300mms, also compared to those later Pentax lenses big and heavy,

Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24

2008-05-06 Thread Timber

Thanks,
.t

Re: Giant Cormorant brings down UFO over England

2008-05-06 Thread P. J. Alling
I'm rather partial to the SMC Pentax A*/M* 300mm twins. Either one is a
borderline great lens by itself and shows little or no image degradation
used with the F 1.7x AF adapter. Moreover compared to most other Pentax
super telephotos they're more or less affordable, I guess they're just
not special enough...

2008-05-06 Thread Paul Stenquist
You were doing fine until you got to the dollar part:-). I was
thinking a DA* 300/4, but that's way over your limit. You might find
an SMC Pentax 300/4 for around $300 or slightly less. It's a good
lens. But you might also consider the FA 80-320/4.5-5.6. It's usually
somewhat less than $200 used, and it's a lot of lens for the money.
Several of us, including myself and Jim Davis, have gotten very nice
results with this relatively inexpensive lens. You will need to add a
good hood.

Re: Should I care about film?

2008-05-06 Thread Rebekah
>Do I want to go to that expense again for equipment that is already

scrolling past all the other opinions,

If it makes you happy, sure. Pentax cameras last a good long while,
and the K lenses work on the digitals anyways. Plus, film is
enjoyable to process, and personally I adore the way slide film looks
although it may be a very long time until computer screens and
scanners compare and also catch up to my checkbook.

Additionally, I have an old me-f that has no cover on the battery
compartment, so I just shoot manually. I enjoy the challenge and hope
it keeps me good at metering by eye.

I guess it's just a personal thing. In my mind, it's like asking,
'should I care about watercolors?' or, 'should I care about
hand-drafting?'. Well, personally I can draft on the computer and use
paint programs quite handily, but I enjoy drafting out a plan by hand
or spending a few hours painting. And yes, it's nice to load pictures
from my camera straight to my computer. So is film dead? Only if you
don't want to use it.

I'm looking to buy a longer lens, maybe in the 300-350 range.
Sharper is more important that speed to me - most if not all of my

The Live View on the Panny L1 body nets a similar unlimited eye
relief. I find it a tremendous aid when working with relatively
static subject matter and working on a tripod. It's more convenient
to me than the P645's reflex viewfinder, looks more like what I liked
using a Hasselblad or Rolleiflex with waist level finder. I haven't
shot 4x5 or larger formats in many years.

Ditto, with the added caveat that I find a restricted view of the
finder mildly uncomfortable and an active impediment to shooting. If
I'm planning to shoot trult static subject matter, I'm not likely to
be shooting a compact 35mm SLR but rather my 645 or 4x5, neither of
which are lacking in eye relief (Especially not the latter which has

That's no longer tea, my friend. Steeped leaves in HOT water, strong, is 'tea.'
the other stuff is barely flavored hot water!

Of course, that's just MY opinion. But...if you want the taste of _real_ tea,
you don't dilute it!

Might as well start a well-poured Guinness stout and dilute it half and half
with U.S. Budweiser!

I want to see the whole frame in a glance, without moving my eye
around physically behind the eye piece. What you wrote above is fine
for a static subject and plenty of time to look around. A lot of
subject matter does not allow such a studied approach to the viewfinder.

The Pentax 645 is a auto-exposure, auto winder camera. There is no need
for the workflow to be slower than for a similar specified 135 camera.

I buy it at ebay. More than enough sellers with all kinds of film.

>> or do you have to do it yourself (I'm considering both BW and colour)?

I can have it processed by a photo-dealer or, through another, by the
Kodak lab. I develop black and white myself. The darkroom for printing
keeps rising on the to-do list. We're halfway though the kithchen. As soon
as we have a new roof, I can start building it.

Developing isn't a problem: you need a light-tight zippered bag with
openings for your hands (I'm quite sure the english language has a word
for it. Sadly I don't know it ;-), a daylight developing tank (patterson
is the brand to have, I think), and chemicals with containers.
Spool the film on the reel of the tank in the zippered bag, close it, and
the rest can be done in daylight...

Hope this helps,

Re: Pentax 70-210 and Sigma 70-300 Apo comparison([EMAIL PROTECTED])

2008-05-06 Thread John Whittingham
Hi

I've owned several variations of the Sigma 70-300, DL, APO Macro, APO Macro
Super etc. all were soft at the edge of the frame at 300mm and CA is evident,
unlike some of the better APO (EX)lenses where CA's are negligible. IIRC the
F70-210 performed better at 200mm than any Sigma I tried in the 70-300 range.
IOM the Tamron is a far better lens optically, I'm sorry I waited so long
before trying one myself, it remains to be seen if the DA 55-300 is better
than the Tamron optically.

Regards,

John

a lot of tourists visit Harrogate, which is a spa and has a wonderful
old Victorian Turkish Bath.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/northyorkshire/content/image_galleries/turkish_ba
ths_gallery.shtml

Curiously a lot of people who visit think it is by the sea, and ask
for directions to the beach. The typical response from locals is to
point down the street and say 'carry straight on down there for about
50 miles...'.

Oddly enough, despite having no beaches and no sea, Harrogate does
have a pier head.

Re: Bench memorial

2008-05-06 Thread drew
I remember a few years ago the SETI collective computing project was off
line for quite some time after some thieves dug up and tried to steal
the copper phone cables running into the university that hosts the project.
Just recently the press has covered a number of cases of theft of lead
from church roofs and catalytic converters from vehicles for the platinum.
