Ah, DL. Therein lies the problem. As any fule kno, you can only capture
dragonflies and their ilk with the latest uberkamera and associated gizmos. In
the case of Pentax, this will be the soon never-to-be-released FF, AS-equipped
K1D with the new, equally likely, infinitely short to infinitely long,
infinitely wide consumer priced lens (with or without SMC) that is capable of
being used as a tunneling electron microscope or galaxy crossing telescope and
anything in between. With that setup, you don't even need to leave your
armchair to produce crystal-clear shots of whatever it is you want.

RE: How often do you use a tripod? (Was: Re: Tripod Q)

2008-06-09 Thread Anthony Farr
Yes, a good photographer knows when the composition they're contemplating is
a dead-end, and will abandon it for a something more promising. The
compositions that work best tend to resolve themselves very quickly.

Less experienced photographers will worry at a picture, trying to pry out a
silk purse when all that's there is a sow's ear.

After all this time I finally know why my pictures are carp, thanks
inferior equipemnt! I wondered why many of my pictures were not up to
snuff, all this time I figured it was operator error, now I realise that
since the KxxD range came out and my *ist-DL became 'obsolete' the
pictures it produces must be obsolete also... Perhaps I'll invest in a K1D
in infinty years when it is available and I can afford it ;-)

Same thing happened when i needed to buy a charger for the D1 batteries.

I'm fed up with that aspect of ebay, my strategy is just think about
what is the maximum I'm willing to pay for something, and bid that in

want to pay and keep increasing their bids by small amounts in the
last minutes.

BTW, Congrats on the enablement

Re: LightRoom question

2008-06-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Easiest way (Lightroom 1.4.1):

- click on the folder or collection of photos you want to search
- open the Find panel
- click the Text checkbox
- set the upper popup to Keywords
- set the Rule popup to Are Empty

The grid will now show all exposures which have no assigned keywords.

Flash Forward 2007

2008-06-09 Thread Fernando
This weekend I was reading some photography books at a local bookstore
and I found this project that publishes some of work of emerging
photographers from Canada, US and UK. Some nice portraiture, some
intriguing shots; for those who like to look at this kind of
photographs should be enjoyable.

The website has the book in pdf to download for free:

Shutter problems? (partially-exposed frames)

2008-06-09 Thread Charles Robinson
I pulled out the camera on Saturday after a few days (ok, a week) of
it sitting around unused and a couple of times when I went to use it
the first images came out like this:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2008/shutter_probs/IMGP9186.jpg

The camera is in "portrait" orientation rotated to the left, so the
stripe of image which is visible is on the "bottom" of the frame.

Seconds later, after turning the camera off/on and wondering what the
hell is going on, I get this:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2008/shutter_probs/IMGP9187.jpg

..and it functioned perfectly for the rest of the day and 100+ shots.

Does anyone know what would cause this? My only thought was that the
mirror could have had problems and been getting in the way, but due to
the way that an image "flips" on its way to the sensor, doesn't that
mean I should only have seen a stripe of exposure on the TOP of the
picture, not the bottom?

Re: Shutter problems? (partially-exposed frames)

2008-06-09 Thread P. J. Alling
Looks like your mirror got stuck in the down position, which put it out
of sync with the shutter, (i.e. mirror started up after the shutter had
already started to close). What might actually have caused that to
happen, I couldn't tell you.

PESO - After the ride

2008-06-09 Thread Christian
Yesterday (Sunday) was one degree F below the record high temperature.
It was 98F, with a 110F heat index (which means humidity was insanely
high too). So how did i spend my day? Why, going for a 100k bike ride
for charity of course! The "Tour de Cure" for diabetes research rolled
through town and a few of us from work set up a team for the 63 mile
(100k) ride. The longest ride I'd done before this was 40 miles so I
thought this would be a nice challenge and for a good cause.

Here's the ol' Trek, resting after a metric century (Shot with the Optio S):

PESO - 20 miles to go

2008-06-09 Thread Christian
20 miles from the finish line of the Tour de Cure.

L-R: Me, Peter, Jim, Stephen, Lachlan. The other half of the team had
either dropped out at that point or were ahead of us.

shot with the Optio S which rode in a back pocket of my jersey, but
after dousing myself with bottle after bottle of water, I think the
front element got a little moisture on it, hence the smudge on the left
side of the image.

Re: PESO - After the ride

2008-06-09 Thread Bruce Dayton
I can sort of relate. A few years back I did a ride around Napa
Valley here in California. We were riding mountain bikes and the
ride was about 55 miles. The temperature was between 95-100 but
humidity was not so high. One of the strangest things was about 2/3
way through the ride, the water in my bottles was ambient temperature
(98 degrees) so taking a drink of very warm water did not help cool
you down at all. That was the biggest problem, cooling down.

Congrats on your ride!

I have found that since getting the K10D with its
anti-shake, I rarely use one; and it's really nice to
leave that 3-5 lbs (1.5-2.5 kg, if you prefer) of gear
and the set-up fuss behind.

Rick

===
Extremely rarely. But I am not doing macro flower shots or anything.

I find I use it mainly now to take pictures of my junk to sell on ebay (i.e.
"product shots") heh.

SDM technology & lenses

2008-06-09 Thread gldnbearz
Can someone educate me on the SDM enabled lenses? Am I correct in
understanding that the AF is engaged only if you use the lens with an
SDM enabled body? Otherwise the lens if MF only?

SO is a bad influence/enabler... I'm being "encouraged" to upgrade
from the istDS to a K200 +/- 50-135 lens, so I'm checking to see what
ramifications might be. Not that I *need* the 50-135 when I have the
really nice 16-45 and just got the 50-200 this month.

No. Some of the SDM lenses (the DA* 16-50 and 50-135, at least) also
have screwdriver AF, so they will work with older AF bodies. I can use
my 16-50 on my *ist-D, and could use it on my PZ-1p (with vignetting).

The only SDM lens I know of that is SDM-only (thus requiring a K10D,
K20D or K200D) is the 17-70 lens. Note that that actually has "SDM"
in the name of the lens. I assume many (if not all) new lenses will
be SDM-only.

I found a step-by step from a guy who built a headless file, FTP, P2P
server using an old PC and the Xubuntu distribution. It turns out there
are a lot of holes in his example. Some of that is because of my
immense dearth of knowledge in this area and some of it is my newer
version of the software. It's running, but the computer is REALLY
slow...The CPU is averaging 100%. Don't know if something is eating up
all the cycles or if the CPU is just that old. It's an old AMD of some
sort. And honestly I don't know if it's really working as a server or
not yet let alone controlling it from another location or whatever.. I
have a lot of questions... But I'm off to Minn-e-so-ta for a couple days

I don't own any SDM lenses however from what I know only one SDM lens

SDM lenses, up till now, also support the screwdriver drive used on the

Something is eating the cycles. As long as you've got a halfway decent
CPU (an 800MHz pentium is more than sufficient) and 256MB of memory you
have more than enough power for a useful Linux system.

I would concur, I had a dual Pentium Pro 200 with 256Mb, It was quite
happy serving my website, email, Unreal Tournament and file server for
the home... never really topped more than 60% load.

I did pretty well and felt pretty darn good at the finish. The last 30k
were brutal. I had to replace the front tube with 20k to go and ended
up with a slow leak on the rear that needed air twice in the last 15k.
One of my co-worker/teammates described it as riding in a pizza oven.

I was late getting to work today (job interview, but don't tell my
current employer). Rode about 25km in 33C heat, with a humidex of
42C. I believe that 37C is the equivalent of 100f, so that gives you
an idea. Add to that the fact that I was riding directly into a
50km/h headwind (gusts to 60km/h) and you'll understand that I can
commiserate with you on the weekend.

We can be a tough lot, us cyclists!

Ok a quick google conversion... 33 = 91, 42 = 107.. Holy crap it must be
humid as hell there! (hmmm is hell humid or would it be a dry heat...).

Actually, it's now raining, but the humidity (in the rain) is currently 74%.

Hey, it's still fun for me. I'm glad to have a long commute each day.
If I get this job I just interviewed for, my commute by bike will
drop from about 50 minutes each way to about 12 to 15 minutes - I
think I'll be putting on a few pounds. Mind you, I can still "take
the long way home" and get a few miles in...

I'm in the process of getting my house sold and moving to within 30k of
the office; with a paved bike trail for most of it. I can't wait to
bike commute regularly - for the fuel savings as well as the fitness.

Dear Spider ...

2008-06-09 Thread D. Glenn Arthur Jr.
Dear Bedroom Spider,

What are you doing on the floor instead of the ceiling? Don't
you realize you could get stepped on there, or attract the
attention of Perrine, my cat? Here, let me 'rescue' you with
this small jar, as suggested by Godfrey DiGiorgi. And what
sort of host would I be if I did not offer you some relief from
this oppressive heat (308K / 35C / 95F ; 41% humidity)? I've
got this one special room, a little too small for me to fit
into myself, that is much cooler than the rest of the house.
You should be comfortable there for a little while.

Now let me get the big flashy thing ready ...
