OT: 3D Sketch (What bored draftsman/tinkerer/photographer gets up too)

2008-06-30 Thread David Savage
G'day All,

In about August/Sept. of '06 we were all abuzz about the upcoming
K10D. Much speculation, and for those who were privy to the "leaked"
press release, "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" amusement.

With news of it's impeding release, and me being a tinkerer/pano geek,
I started to think about a new L bracket. I liked the idea of the Kirk
style L brackets, but I have Manfrotto equipment. So being a drafty &
having free boring winters afternoon, I modelled what I would ideally
liked to have made: (~8MB)

I didn't have access to the machine tools I needed to make a prototype
(I also didn't have the camera). What I eventually made works but
wasn't as compact or sexy looking, but was easy to fabricate with hand
tools..

Up until today I though I had lost this CAD model, after last years HD
failure. But I was clearing out my work computers back-up folder and
found it, & thought I'd share.

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Why to buy a K20D?

2008-06-30 Thread pnstenquist
BTW, you can turn off high ISO noise reduction. You just can't turn off long
exposure noise reduction, but you can set it to "auto" where it will remain off
if excessive heat buildup isn't indicated.

But for me the performance is what counts. And the camera performs better than
any other Pentax offering, and, according to Adam, on a par with the Nikon D300.

With 8000 frames on the K20D I'm sure it's less noisy thatn the K10D at any ISO

The inability to fully disable NR & some ISO 6400 shots I've taken

That should be the resolution for a single panel. If it can drive
multiple panels, it should be able to drive each at that maximum resolution.

Nope. The SLI (Scalable Link Interface) is for when you have lots of
complex rendering going on, as in a game. I would not expect it to help
at all for regular (non-3D) displays. It might help AutoCAD or
something, but it's not going to do Photoshop any good.

At the 1998 and 2000 Petit le Mans races, a car backflipped on the back

A couple of guys at the Star-Tribune here in Minneapolis referred to
this weekend's Pride festival/parade as the "two-day fridge-magnet
expo".

There are a lot of booths with T-shirts, magnets, and bumper stickers
bearing pithy sayings.

I had a great time, but as usual failed to pull out the camera for
more than just a couple. I'll share the photo of the rainbow-dyed dog

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2008/IMGP0513.jpg

My conversation with the owner, roller-skating with the dog:

Me: "That dye does wash out, right?"

He: "You'll just have to come home and shower with us to find out!"

Heh. That got a giggle out of me. I passed on the invite, though!

I don't know what is normal for that camera, but it sounds like anything faster
than an 80X card
is faster than the camera.

Belgium is full of such magical places. Time capsules, where the clocks
have simply stopped one day. Must have been around 1957 in this case:

On the right outside wall, there's an advertisement for lubricants, a

RE: On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread Bob W
Far too many missed shots to bore everyone with. Well, maybe just one
then. I was walking along Piccadilly one Sunday and saw Don McCullin,
so I went up, shook his hand and said hello. We chatted for about 10
minutes and in all that time I never thought to take his picture, or
to ask him to take a picture of me with my camera (so I'd have owned a
unique, original photo by one of the legends).

There is less noise across the entire ISO range. But when you don't have
to amplify the signal (i.e. when you are in low ISO), the noise is less
apparent to begin with. Only when you boost the amplification do you see
the improvements in noise reduction.

I think you are missing my point here. I was talking about correcting in
software "outside the camera" as an alternative to correcting using the
ISO setting, given exactly the same exposure settings. I mean, when you
shoot at anything above the "native" ISO, you are also in reality
underexposing at the sensor level (if the exposure is "correct"
according to the meter etc.) since the sensor itself has a fixed
sensitivity. Right?

Re: On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread Brendan MacRae
Interesting thread...

My last missed opportunity was just a few weeks ago. I
was attending an adoption celebration party for my
good friends up the road from me in Nevada City.

Our friend's mother who was in town from Texas, is
suffering from cancer but was none the less on hand to
be at the event to celebrate with her daughter and her
newly adopted grandson.

At one point in the festivites when friends and family
members were each coming forward to hand the boy
flowers and say a few words I was busy get each with a
couple of shots using the K10D and 540 flash outdoors
(manual mode and fill flash).

I managed to catch everybody EXCEPT my friends' mother
doing the flower exchange since my SD card was full I
didn't realize it (funny how the camera suddenly won't
work!...duh)...It was like a wedding photographer
missing the kiss. Ugh.

Anyway, even though I shoot stuff like this gratis and
because I enjoy it, I still treat it as though these
are clients and they deserve my best efforts. I made
up for it later by getting some good shots of the boy
and his new grandmother together, but things like this
stick with you and it's really tough to completely
shake the regret.

The upside is that situations like these usually make
one a better photographer. I'm not making that mistake
EVER again!

Re: Another little friend (DA300 wide open 1:1)

2008-06-30 Thread Margus Männik
Hi Frank,

the image sharpness improved a lot after I adjusted my camera. Just one
step to negative side, but the difference is significant. I tried to
shot a moon, but the images were not as sharp as expected, so I spent
couple of hours with test targets and evaluating the images. DA300
adjustment is much more critical than with shorter lenses.

I used to think that I missed lots of shots, and that if only I

I was wrong.

;-)

Still, carrying a camera with me virtually every time I leave the

Are you kidding? My legs still hurt from Saturday. "Right at this

Re: On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread ann sanfedele
Sounds like you needed video for this one :-)

I have tons of missed shots stories -- some because I wasn't carrying
the camera, some because I wasn't
fast enough, had the wrong lens, ran out of film, batteries died, etc...
or whoever was driving the car I
was in wouldn't stop. Lots more missed shtos than got shots over the
years - or maybe it just seems
that way. IF I think of a particularly cute story I'll send it a long
down the line

It was already converted, Mike.

It seems to make a BIG difference having the filter inside the camera.
Most of my test shots are in the 1/125 range so far. My istD at iso
400*(as this was shot) would yield about a 1/4 sec shutter at F8.

Its a pretty fun camera BTW

On the Ones We Missed

2008-06-30 Thread Christine Aguila
I suspect that the talent on this list misses very few shots, but in the off
chance there are some funny stories about missed shots, I'd be very
interested in reading them--if you are interested in sharing them.I've
even got a story of my own:

While walking down Clark street in Chicago in the early 80s , I spied a big,
burly doorman, who was the size of a small building and had the arms and
hands of a stone mason, leading a skinny, pimply faced teenager by the
collar out of a very dingy bar.

Outside the bar in broad daylight, the doorman began to give the kid a good
verbal thrashing all the while wagging his finger under the kid's nose.
Finally the doorman's index finger came to a full stop, and in the next
nano-second the teenager seized the moment and chomped on it-and tenaciously
hung on as the doorman yelled and desperately tried to shake the kid off.
The two spun about for awhile in front of the bar, whirling round & round
till the kid picked his moment, let go, and made a run for it.

And I missed all of it. I didn't get one shot off-I was so engrossed
watching the drama I completely forgot to reach for my camera, which was
slung over my shoulder. I still have regrets about missing this shot--but
fortunately the memory is still well-seen, perfectly rendered with held
highlights & detail rich shadows, well-framed, brilliantly composed, and
very sharp ;-).

Cheers, Christine

If you remember, Mark, that's exactly what happened when we went for
our brief (about 40 miles?) ride from the cabin in NC. I was
horrendously out of shape, having busted my collarbone the previous
autumn, and had only been back on my bike for about a month (and had
the gut to show for it).

We were keeping together on the hills (both up and down, although
granted the roads we were on didn't have any ~big~ hills), but it was
on a flat that I pulled away from you. I didn't do it on purpose, I
was just "taking a pull" at the bottom of a hill, and I didn't want to
slow you down, so I was keeping up the same effort that I did going up
the previous hill, thinking you were on my tail. After a few minutes,
I looked around and you were about 1/2 a kilometre behind.

The legs were still there, but the lungs certainly weren't, which is
why I was barely keeping up with you (and I was huffing and puffing
while you weren't) going up hill yet was able to pull away on the
flat.

I guess carrying 15 or 20 extra pounds didn't help my hill climbing either, eh?

;-)

cheers,
frank

A little less crazed - so I'm back skimming list a bit...
really enjoyed this whole big GESO - and I like the way the page is set
up, too

Userfriendly to all HTML stuff.

I don't know the answer to your Flower "what is it" But I can tell you
the name of the shelf fungus in this photo:

Ganoderma tsugae.

I love the spiderwort shot too... well, actually I love a lot of 'em...

Got myself a new Pentax lens

2008-06-30 Thread Mark Roberts
I just received a Pentax T132 achromatic (two-element) close-up lens.
B&H had a used one for $59.00 so I thought I'd go for it. It appears to
be in perfect condition. It's a +0.76 diopter lens, made for the 67
system but I'm hoping it works reasonably well on the FA-80-200/2.8 (I
know people who've had excellent results with the Nikon and Canon
2-element diopters on this lens). It's a 67mm thread, but the DSLR crop
factor lets it work without vignetting on the 77mm filter thread with a
step-down adapter.

I'll do some tests in a couple of days to see what the resulting image
quality is like. It'll be interesting to compare with the Sigma 180/3.5
macro. It'll also be interesting to see how it works *on* the Sigma 180
macro! Should get pretty good magnification with that combo. (On the
Pentax 80-200 at 200mm it seems to get better than half-size
magnification but less than life-size. I'm guessing approximately 1:1.5
ratio - good enough for a lot of field work.

Peso Infrared horse show photo

2008-06-30 Thread David J Brooks
I took the G3 to the last day, Sunday of the three day show. The sun
was out for a while in the morning, so i took a few shots with it
during a warm up fro the first division.
Knowing the shutter lag is slow on these P&S's i timed my shot as the
front legs hit the ground just in front of the jump.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/djbrooks/2624693515/

This was the one and only try, as i nailed it.:-)

G3, Av at f8 and Tv at 1/400. LR adjusting just to see whati could get.

Looks not to bad in LR but way to light on a browser.

Comments welcome.

Yep, CF, Italian or otherwise, is fine stuff. Aluminum is stiff but
really passes the vibration of the road through. My butt came through
this year's ride in much better condition than the last time I did this
century :)

It's amazing how different the physiology differs between running and
cycling. This year I did much more bicycle training but I was still
getting passed by people who I'm sure wouldn't be within an hour of me
in a marathon. I mean, in smaller marathons I'm usually in contention
for an age group award, but in a bicycle century I'm strictly mid-pack
at best. The fact that it was a very hilly ride must have helped me
because I was passing people all the time going up hills, cruising by
when they were obviously gasping for breath and working hard... but on
the next flat they'd blast past me so fast I couldn't even contemplate
drafting.

I can't decide whether I want to train harder to do this again
*properly* or never, ever do it again at all!

It happens because noise is (by definition) pretty much random.

If you underexpose by two stops, and correct in conversion, you're going
to get a certain amount of noise. If, however, you expose correctly,
you're going to get four times the number of photons contributing to the
signal. And while you have four times as much potential for noise, that
doesn't mean you're going to get four times as much noise. While only
exactly true for Gaussian noise distributions, you can expect to see the
amount of noise go up by roughly the square root of the exposure gain.
This means that the signal-to-noise ratio gets about one stop worse for
every two stops of underexposure.

Ad to that the fact that for low sensor values you also get far more
artifacts caused by quantization, and you want to avoid underexposure.

Back story to this one:

I was walking in the Castro before the San Francisco Pride Parade,
taking pictures, when this man walking past stopped and asked what I
was doing.

"Taking pictures of stuff," I replied, "I'm a photographer."

"Take my picture?" he asked.

"Sure," I said, lifting the camera to my eye.

Unprompted, he pulled up his shirt, I snapped the shutter, and with a

I tried it with the 77mm Limited and the results were good, more than
usable. However, not as good as without the TC (as expected). Actually
it made for a nice, but slow compact telephoto. I ended up getting an

Cool shots, Scott!

Are there messengers in Harrisburg? A couple of the fellows certainly
have "the look" - fixed gear or single-speed bikes, messenger bags
(Chrome bags are quite expensive), tatoos; I'd say those guys are
either messengers or wannabes (called Fakengers in England and
Hipsters here in Toronto).

Smallish turnout, but hopefully it will build with time.
