was about this lady who lost her son at an early age of 26 to cancer. The
reporter was talking to her about her son when the lady reached for the photos
that she is holding, while she struggled to hold back her tears. Joe

Re: RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread Jens
Hello list,
Thanks very much for all your answers.
This has become an intresting thread.
I was just wondering. Many photographic societies have "colour" and
"monochrome" as categories for exibitions and contests.
I wanted to know if there is a gerally accepted definiton - and why. Apparently
there's no general rool, all could agree on.

Regards
Jens

RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread John Coyle
For me, monochrome is any single colour, whether green, red, blue or
anything in between. Variations in saturation and tone give a viewable
image, as in a sepia print.

Technically, black is no reflected light, therefore no 'chrome' at all,
whereas white is all colours reflected equally,, therefore not 'mono'.

HTH!

Subject: OT: Define Monochrome

Hello list
In my camera club we had a discussion:
What is monochrome? What's the "official" photographic definition?

It seems the original definition is about painting with only one colour.
Black. For instance - on white paper or canvas.

This gives me a problem: Black & White - that's two colours. Or perhaps just
one: White, since black is not a colour. White is.

So, B&W is paintning with to colours: Light and no light/light and darkness
and all shades in between.

So why is "yellow and blue", or "red and green" etc. not acceptable within
the definition of monochrome? Or is it ?

The only way I seem to be able to understand the monochrome definition is
this:

In monohrome photography we paint with light in the darkness. With white on
black. Or with white on any other background. So white on blue, white on
green. white on red etc.
Right?

Regards
Jens

RE: Best lens for shooting flat art

2008-08-20 Thread John Coyle
I used this lens to photograph a painting for an artist friend: it worked
well, but the problem I found was that shooting straight on gave
unacceptable reflections off the texture of the paint itself. Flash was
useless because of this, and straight on with natural light was also a
problem.
In the end I shot at an angle of about 20 degrees and straightened the image
in Photoshop: the artist was very well pleased with the result!

I'm all for a NorCal meetup.

I think Mt. Diablo (east bay) is a fairly central area, and would provide
some good car-accessible shooting locations, as well as some short, easy

Any other ideas? What would be a good date, too?

RE: RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread Bob W
Up to you, of course, but Bill's notion about a substrate is mistaken.

According to the Munsell system, colour can be described using values
of hue, saturation and tone. Hue is the 'colour' as we normally use
the term - red, green, yellow, whatever. Saturation is the extent to
which the hue appears faded & dull or rich & vibrant. Tone or value is
the extent to which the hue seems light or dark.

A colour picture becomes monochrome if you remove the hue (and
therefore also the saturation), leaving only the tonal values, which
we normally represent on a grey scale. If you replace the grey with
another single hue (mono chrome) but retain the same tonal values you
still have a monochrome picture. The key property is that only one hue
is used.

RE: Define Monochrome

2008-08-20 Thread Paul Ewins
In my camera club monochrome means "one colour", a literal translation.
There is also the standard art convention that black and white are not
colours, they are shades or tones. This, unfortunately, led to the camera
club deciding that monochrome allows black and white and one colour. Instead
of just getting pure B&W or entirely toned images (and god how I hate sepia)
we occasionally get B&W with spot colour. Theoretically an image that was
entirely red or yellow would pass too, so I have thought about putting in a
close-up of a rose just to make a point.

I did notice, however, that the shooter was in a hurry to get to bed

I agree

Mono-chrome to me is as it is written; one color.

Look at any color chart, color wheel, color space, or what have you,
and there is a black, a white, and a number of or blend of all other
colors.

B&W film is monochrome. But a DSLR or any other camera with a red,
green, or blue B&W type filter will give a monochrome image. As such,
it would seem to me that any painting that is painted with one pigment
(blended with white or black for hues) would produce a monochromatic
result.

Joseph McAllister
Pentaxian

from the dictionary:
Noun: monochrome - photograph or picture developed or executed in
black and white or in varying tones of only one color.• representation
or reproduction in black and white or in varying tones of only one
color.
adjective: 1 (of a photograph or picture, or a television screen)
consisting of or displaying images in black and white or in varying
tones of only one color.2 lacking variety and interest; insipid ie:
the monochrome circuit of traveling Broadway productions.

from wikipedia:
For an image, the term monochrome is usually taken to mean the same as
black-and-white or, more likely, grayscale, but may also be used to
refer to other combinations containing only tones of a single color,
such as green-and-white or green-and-black. It may also refer to sepia
displaying tones from light tan to dark brown or cyanotype
(“blueprint”) images, and early photographic methods such as
Ambrotype, Tintype and Daguerreotype, each of which may be used to
produce a monochromatic image.

I believe monochrome means painting with one colour - usually white, but it
could be any other colour.

The base on which I can paint is black, which is not a colour (absense of
light).

So, in monochrome, I can substitute White with any other colour, but the black
base is a MUST.

So, a picture, using blue ink on a yellow base is NOT monochrome, thats's two
colours.

No, but it *felt* as big as a truck when I rode Rt 221 between

The hard bags probably add considerable drag, especially at high speed.
I did get 52 mpg for the trip from Pittsburgh to GFM, through the
mountains and mostly at 70-80 mph. But I drove the Prius when I went
down last week: There's no way the Triumph would haul that Pentax 67 kit

Back when I was a lawyer, I did a very few fender-bender/whiplash
cases. I refused to call them "accidents". There's nothing
accidental when a car collides with anything. I called them
"collisions" or "incidents" or some such thing. With the quality of
cars nowadays, the vehicle is almost never to blame, driver (or in
this case, owner) error is. If a part failure is at the root of the
problem, it's most likely due to the owner failing to properly adhere
to maintenance schedules.

The days of the Pinto are gone! (thank God).

As Bong said, it's a Cleaning, Lubrication and Adjustment. On
mechanical cameras (all cameras, I guess) it really should be done on
a regular basis, every couple of years or so. Honestly, I wait until
something goes wrong (bad frank) but it's regular maintenance that
should keep that thing going for a long long time.

My shop here in Toronto used to charge about $125, which is high (but
they do a good job). Lubing the rails yourself could lead to much
more costly repairs; I'd be inclined to have it done by pros. It's a
good investment in a fine, fine camera.

You say the shutter locks open - is it indeed still exposing or is
 it
just the mirror in the up position?

Is the mirror sticking to the spongy mirror-stops? Next time it
 locks
open, remove the lens and see if the mirror is still up. If so, try
carefully helping it down with your finger, see if it finishes the
 exposure.

Easy to see in a test - remove lens and film back and operate while
 observing.

redux: pentax stuff for sale

2008-08-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I thought I'd repost this in case there were any other interested
parties. Several things have sold and have been removed from the list.

I've only got today and four more days left before I'm out of town for
three weeks; if there's something you'd like in here, we need to act
quickly. :-)

best
Godfrey

---

After much thought and consideration, I've decided that my Pentax kit
is up for sale. I have hardly used it this year; my other equipment is
proving to be satisfactory to my work. And I'm in a 'Simplify,
simplify!' mood as well. ;-)

What I've got is:

Pentax K10D body (+2 spare batteries)
Pentax DA14/2.8
Pentax cable remote
Pentax IR remote
Pentax Magnifier 2x
ReallyRightStuff tripod adapter for K10D
Pentax M42->K mount adapter

All the above was bought new, is in exc++ condition, and includes
original boxes, manuals, caps, etc. I price at 80% of new prices for
this gear, shipping not included.

Pentax A50/2.8 Macro (cosmetics vg, optics exc++)
Pentax-A Rear Converter 2x-S (exc++ includes case)
Pentax FA35-70/3.5-4.5 (exc)
Pentax Fish-Eye-Takumar 17mm f/4 (exc)
Pentax M50/1.4 (exc)

The above were purchased used. All lenses include caps, front and
rear. If you're interested in any of these, let me know and we'll set
a price.

Pentax 645 kit (45 + 75 lenses, case, eye piece rubbers, spare film
magazines, remote release cord, few other bits). All exc condition.

The above was bought used on a whim. I've not used it at all so it's
time to let it go to someone who might. Again, if you're interested
I'll detail the kit out and we can discuss prices.

If you're interested in any of these things, let me know and we'll
work a deal. Send private email for inquiries, of course.

I'm leaving on a trip Tuesday the 26th and will be gone for three
weeks: if you want something let me know quickly so we can close the
deal and get it shipped to you prior to that. Everything unsold will
all go to Ebay as soon as I return.

Re: Best lens for shooting flat art

2008-08-20 Thread Robert Blakely
Some possible suggestions...

1.For a flat field on a flat subject, use a macro lens like the A50/2.8
I bought one from a fellow on this list.
2.If behind glass or plastic, eliminate the cover to eliminate glare, if
possible. Consider polarizer w/side lighting.
... light on both sides is good.
3.Try *very* diffuse lighting to reduce/eliminate hot spots.
4.Adjust angle of light incidence on art to reduce/eliminate
reflections/hot spots.
5.Use side light baffels (flat black cardboard?) to keep glare off lens
if necessary.
6.Film plane must be parallel to plane of art to eliminate parallax
distortion.
... I have a little multi-plane bubble cube that fits the flash shoe for
this when I shoot buildings.
7.Eliminate all other sources of light, if possible - you control the
conditions.
8.Shoot at 5.6 or 8.
9.Shoot centered on artwork.
10. Shoot a color reference card to use for color correction, if critical.

Regards,
Bob...

It refers to different shades of the same colour. Yellow and blue, red
and green are not the same colour. You could do shades of red, shades

I had sized some photos for the fair, at what i thought was 8x10, but

it was not correct. Close but not correct.

I have them resized and ready for resend. At $2.99 an 8x10, i can

Most work in Lr is dimensionless or proportion based. Sizing is only
important in setting a proportion when cropping, or arranging a
 slide
or web presentation (picture dimensions in pixels), in exporting and
 in printing.

Printing is where you use rulers because there are a lot of
 dimensions
to manage directly. For export to a size and density, presuming
 you've
set the crop proportion correctly, just specify the long dimension
 and
 output density.

I've used both the A50/1.7 and A50/2.8 Macro with the *ist DS and
K10D. They both do a good job, but the Macro does a better job. It's
better corrected, stops down further, and of course the longer

Re: OT LR and scaling

2008-08-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Those rulers are only available in the Print module when in Lightroom
because that's the only place they are useful.

You should know what sizes you're targeting to print to before you go
to print. You set the proportions for those sizes using the Crop Tool
and locking the proportions. Here's the popup menu in Lightroom 2 ...
it's the same in Lightroom 1 but in a different place on the screen:

   http://homepage.mac.com/godders/crop-proportions-LR2.jpg

So...
- If you're making square prints, set 1x1.
- If you're making 8x10 or 4x5 or 16x20, set 4x5 or 8x10.
- If you're making 3x4 or 6x8 or 11x14, set 8.5x11 or create a custom
setting in 4x3 or 3x4.
- If you're making 2x3, 3.5x5, 4x6, 5x7.5, 8x12, etc etc set 2x3.

If you need to make an 8x10 and a 4x6 print, and have both available
for immediate use, create a virtual copy of the image and set the
cropping on one for 8x10 and the other for 4x6.

When you export for printing, set the long dimension you want, let the
other fall where it goes, and set the print density you want.

I love how the story is written like the vehicle was at fault! Not the

Re: Best lens for shooting flat art

A 50mm f1.7 would work just fine.
I think it is an ovedlooked lens in digital times.
(effectively a 75mm f1.7)

Re: Best lens for shooting flat art

2008-08-20 Thread Andrew Brown
I used exactly that lens to shoot some of my wife's embroideries for a
show catalogue. It gave perfectly acceptable results just putting them
flat and using mostly natural light. But with a DSLR you do have to
have a tall tripod or a very low floor :-)

I know of the rulers you refer to, Dave. They appear in PE5 as well.
Lightroom 1.4 does not have these rulers in the develop module like PS/PE5.
HTH, Cheers, Christine

When you click on the aspect locked icon, you can then also set the size by
clicking the up/down arrow buttons & choosing a size. The up/down arrow
buttons are to the right of the aspect locked icon. (Dave, you probably
already know this, if so ignore.)

Pretty nice gallery Boris but I suspect I may not be totally obejctive
judging those.

I will vote for ' Look what I got ' as my favourite but that's
probably because your daughter and I are part of it ;)
I do like much Rose of Belgium, Enjoy your summer and A street scene as well.

I should sort mine and "gallery" them as well.
