Workflows and Protection

2008-12-09 Thread Doug Franklin

Howdy, folks,

I'm in the process of trying to automate the end-phase of my photo
workflow. That is, the portion after I've pulled the image into
Photoshop [Elements] or something and gotten it cropped and adjusted
"just so".

And that's gotten me to thinking relatively deeply about things that may
not yet admit deep thinking. So, I'm going to throw some ideas out to
the "PDML At Large" and see what comes back.

I want to provide myself some recourse against unauthorized
reproduction. So I'm thinking about several technologies and processes
to do that. In the past, my "attempts" have largely centered around
providing images on the web that are too small (in resolution terms) to
be of any real use outside the "Webisphere", and not caring about uses
within that environment.

I'm still planning to pursue that same strategy for the stuff I make
available to the world at large. Nothing more than, say, 800x600
pixels, for example. Put my copyright in the EXIF/IPTC metadata.
"Brand" a watermark visually into the image. Stuff like that.

But now it's looking like I can actually make some money from at least
some of my photographic endeavors. So, I want to afford myself some
more, not really protection, but recourse, ass coverage, whatever.
Increase my ability to "prove" that I originally created an image, after
that image has been cropped, resized, and otherwise mangled.

So I'm thinking about several aspects of deterring unauthorized use.
Phase one is to "brand" the images with a low-contrast modification that
imposes a notice visibly on the image, and keep the published resolution
"impractically" low. So, just how "visible" is too much in a watermark?
We're only talking about an 800x600 image, after all. Does anyone
have any experience with the "pay-to-play" image watermarking services?

I'm also thinking about embedding additional data via steganography.
Does anyone have any pointers or information about creating a "proper"
stegano-embeddable image that's not going to either detract from the
top-level image or be "too detectable"? Should I think about multiple
stegs, with a different data set each time? Just how resilient are
stegs in the face of image modifications like crops, resizes, and
replacement of the "brand"?

I'm also thinking about "shaving" every published image so that none of
them have the outside 1-10% of the image. Theoretically, if I suspect
unauthorized use, this should help me prove original ownership. But,
when do I shave them? Immediately after capture? Immediately prior to
publishing a particular rendering? Several times in the middle of the
workflow?

Discuss ...

Pentax designation of CLASS II on a K-1000 box

2008-12-09 Thread Pat Harris - "sammler"
Today I purchased a K-1000 which had a sticker on the box stating "CLASS
II".

The warranty card also had the "CLASS II" designation printed on the
card; not a stamp or stick on but a part of the original printing.

What's the significance of this designation? The camera is one of the
later Asahi Pentax AOCo ones which was assembled in Hong Kong. The cash
register tape for the sale indicates state sales tax so I'm sure it was
not a PX/BX/NEX sale.

My searches via Google were futile.

Just curious. :-)

RE: For Dario: "Gold" *istD Photos

2008-12-09 Thread David Savage
Yep.

But due to limited space around the subject I needed more working room. The
umbrella (43") was about 8-10 inches from the subject. Hence the need for
longer FL.

I'd also need more powerful studio lights.

And a proper product table.

A short bar stool with a bed sheet (clothes pegged to curtains) draped over
it left me with sore back.

Not since my student days have I had access to a decent studio set-up.

Cheers,

Dave

The vast majority of product shots for magazine advertising are shot
on 35 mm or MF digital these days. All you need is enough light to get
f11 or so and a lens of 50mm or less. No problem. With APS-C and a 35m
lens, getting enough DOF is a no brainer.

Louise and Jasper

2008-12-09 Thread Jack Davis
I went to Walgreen's and had a couple images mini scanned to follow up on my
Lake Louise home scan attempt.
Horizontal Louise still does not show the amount of water that actually shows
below the peak reflection in the slide, but this will do as my last attempt.
Not worth pursuing further.
While at Walgreen's, I also had them scan a shot taken in Jasper NP on the same
trip. Dark day.

"Ansel Adams America" and the Dave Brubeck Jazz Festival at
University of Pacific.
I submitted nine pieces (six is the maximum to be accepted by any

Re: Semi OT - question about computers

2008-12-09 Thread Doug Franklin

Hi Boris,

Boris Liberman wrote:

The time to upgrade my home PC has come. My main workflow revolves
around LightRoom 2.1 and I intend to keep using LR in the future.

The dilemma is which processor to buy - dual core or quad core. My
brother (who happens to be top grade sys admin) suggests that I buy dual
core processor because of its low heat generation and low power
consumption. He suggests that dual core is optimal balance. However he
admits to have no experience with applications such as LR.

Thence the question. Is there any of you who was using dual core and
upgraded to quad core and noticed significant LR performance
improvements? In general, what do you suggest - dual core or quad core?

The motherboard that I am going to buy will support both dual and quad
core so that I could theoretically upgrade in the future should I
decided that dual core is not strong enough. But I'd rather optimize
this criterion up front.

My experience has been that more and faster memory typically make a
bigger difference than the processor, and I'd guess that LR is no
different, due in part to the large "undo" cache it needs, like any
photo editor. That said, the only place you're likely to see any
difference at all between a dual core and a quad core in LR is when
you're applying filters/manipulations to an image. It's not going to
help with compress/decompress, because those are limited by the disk
bandwidth much more than processor or memory bandwidth.

If it were my computer, for these sorts of tasks, I'd start by getting
4GB or more of the fastest memory that my motherboard will support.
Then I'd consider increasing the disk bandwidth with either faster
drives or RAID or both. Only then would I consider dropping significant
cash on a new processor.

Now if I was running big simulations or "SETI at Home" or "Folding at
Home" or ray tracing or something, then I'd go for processor. But most
people are limited far more by the memory and disk than the CPU.

That's called a Straw Man Argument, Peter. Attribute statements or
positions to those you oppose, then argue against your statement,
rather than what they've actually said (or done) to prove that you're
right.

Most people that I know in the peace movement do ~not~ think that way
at all! They believe that to simply stop fighting will not stop wars.
Peace isn't the lack of fighting or the lack of war, peace is a
positive thing. Most "peaceniks" that I know believe that to stop war
the underlying reasons for war must be eliminated. It's about
equitable distribution of resources and economic stability. It's
about doing something about economic disparities between nations,
cultures and individuals, about giving real political power to
individuals.

Whether those peaceniks are right or not, I'm not about to say because
I don't know, but I do not know of any that would simply say that the
road to peace will be achieved by simply stopping war.

frank

Hi Boris I really like Baker woman. A very minor nit is the lack of space
between her right hand and the RH edge of the image - either more space or
delibrately cut off some of her hand. As it now stands it looks like you

RE: PESO - Long Wait in the Snow - with a URL this time

2008-12-09 Thread Bob W
Good shot - very atmospheric.

One of my colleagues got stuck in traffic this morning. After a difficult
day in the office yesterday he decided to get in very early today and get
ahead of the game, so he left at some brutal hour of the morning only to get
snarled up in traffic. Stuck in a jam he decided to phone in and let us know
what was going on. As soon as he had his mobile to his ear a police car
found its way through the traffic, and they fined him and slapped 3 points
on his licence, even though the traffic was at a standstill. In the end he
arrived at the office an hour later than usual, in not a terribly good mood.

I dunno, I've never been that attached to the MZ-S design. Kinda looks
like a melted RTSIII to me. Same reasons I think the Leica R8/R9 are
less than nice looking (Curves galore and a hunchbacked look). The
nicest recent design I've seen out of Pentax looks-wise was the AP
50th Anniversary, with the K10D/K20D running second.

Re: Semi OT - question about computers

2008-12-09 Thread Adam Maas
Power consumption and heat generation are not significant concerns
with the current systems unless you intend to overclock the CPU or
rack the systems with a bunch of others (Cooling is often at a premium
in Datacentres). For a desktop system indended for image processing
buy as much CPU power and RAM as you can afford and a big PSU (So
you've got plenty of power for extra drives). I'd recommend whatever
Quad-core processor has the first big pricing gap above it (The
top-end processors have a premium attached, if you look for the
premium in the pricing and buy just below where it kciks in, you'll
usually have the best bang for the buck).

I suspect that some combination of raw CPU speed, having lots of RAM
(4G or more), and fast disks, would help you more than going from 2
cores to 4. I run Lr on a dual-quad-core 6G Mac Pro meat-grinder and
it's damn fast, but not *that* much faster than on my laptop. If I
had to pick one factor it'd be having tons of memory. -T

Semi OT - question about computers

2008-12-09 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PESO: Horizontal Louise

2008-12-09 Thread Jack Davis
Here is a shot of Lake Louise in which the meter was influence by the peak snow
field.
I just now scanned the slide on my $50 EPSON PERFECTION 3170 PHOTO.
I tried it a couple times, but it insists on cutting off the edges which
include a complete reflection of the snow peak at the bottom.
I may take it to Walgreen's for a mini web file. They do fine for such which is
primarily due to the photo counter gal who I've known for some years.

Ideas/suggestions:
If the center area were just a wee bit easier to delineate the man

Re: PESO - Long Wait in the Snow - with a URL this time

2008-12-09 Thread David J Brooks
Like it. You have some snow flying which is visible, adds to the
moment. The partial car on the left could go.

BTW, its snowing pretty hard North of Hwy 7, about 2-3" so far. I have
1 hill i need to go down in the bus, right at the end of the run at
Musslemans Lake, then 2 90 degree turns. Not looking forward to that.

Sure, Frank. You were no doubt attracted to that obvious bondage thing around

thanks Frank, for looking and the comment. yes, it's pretty desolate up
there. also pretty beautiful in a very stark kind of way. also
breath-taking...

lots of life too. marmots for one. kiangs, or the tibetan wild asses in
plenty. seen three/four species of water fowl too around that area. and
i am sure there are plenty more...

With a 35m lens you should be able to photograph the pimples on a
