Good brownie points as she will hopefully be giving me some work, so did
it for expenses. Pleased with the results - here's a gallery of 23 pics

can guess which were shot with the A*85/1.4 !

Re: PESO #009 - Yellow Galaxy

LCD calibrated with spyder within last 6 months. The yellows look
yellow, but do not appear vibrant to me. Compare it to the yellows in
"Yellow on stone" from your 2009 PES0 #2.

I would find a brighter image more pleasing.

From: Boris Liberman
John, without disrespect, I have to ask you about the profiling of your
screen. Mine was recently (2 weeks ago or so) with Spyder. I cannot say
that yellows look very yellow but they look yellow enough on my screen.
Though, as a matter of fact, I am generally used to the regular light
bulb in my room - you know - coming home after long hours at work, so
perhaps this makes these yellows slightly yellower in my eyes.

Truly fascinating.

Such is the fate of a film camera..

2009-03-29 Thread Charles Robinson
I bought (off of Craigslist) today a Pentax ME Super in absolutely
pristine condition. It came in a camera bag, with a Vivitar Auto-
Thyristor flash (no tilt or swivel, oh well). There were two rolls of
Fuji film in the bag (best when developed before March of 1996!).

Attached to the ME Super was an A-50mm f/1.7 lens.

Total cost? $10.

I didn't even NEED the lens - but at that price? Wow. Had to do it.

Anyone want an ME Super body? I'll never use it.

Re: Owl

Hi John: Well, as you say it's a little soft, but it's a nice composition

I've been looking for the owl I heard earlier this month, trying to get
some idea of its habits. Yesterday, I spotted it on the nest I thought it
might use, and came back today with my camera:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/3396685627/

K10D, Sigma 300 2.8 + Sigma APO 1.4x tele-converter, on a tripod ...
ISO 400 (I think)

The image is a bit soft. I've noticed that whenever I use the 1.4x
converter, even though it's supposed to be matched to the lens.

It just kills me. Some guy came along with a Nikon D200 & 200 mm Nikon IS
lens and chimping what he got looked a whole lot sharper than what I got.

But ... it's what I got.

Thanks for your comments. OK, I'll temporarily back off my experiment. If
you look at the original, the bulk of the cat may be uncomfortably
centered, but the eyes are not. Also, the original crop provides the pun
in the title. As with jokes, where if you have to explain the punch-line,
you did something wrong, I'll concede. (But, if you are interested,
notice the "bird" [chicken] on the left which is watching the cat who is
watching birds...)

Three variations without chicken: 1st is actually from another image in
the same series, second goes back to a vertical slice of the original,
the 3rd is a square-format piece of the original as syggested by JC.

Thanks, Bruce. I'm not sure I agree with the product name being in
focus, but it's a fair assessment. And I WAS having fun with f1.8 :-)

It's the kind of idea an art director would love, and the marketing
director would shoot down. The bean counters who ultimately control
whether a shot gets used or not don't have imagination enough to see the
product unless the label is tack sharp.

It might get used in some niche "gourmet" food & beverage magazine
article ... the kind that uses paid product placements.

My younger brother spent Thursday night in hospital after someone drove
into

his car at 45 mph (~72kph). The car rolled and my brother was trapped
inside, and had to be cut free by the fire brigade. They strapped him to a
stretcher ("like Hannibal Lecter"), took him in for an examination, then
let

him out a few hours later, more or less intact.

Here are some pictures he took of the car, which is a write-off - it
doesn't

look at all as though it's been hit at that speed, or rolled. The car has
more airbags than Dolly Parton, yet none of them deployed. When he asked
about it he was told that the car wasn't hit hard enough. Yet it's a
write-off. Amazing how strong these things are these days - it probably
saved his life.

That car wouldn't be a total write off in the states. It would appear
that the damage is largely cosmetic. Air bags generally deploy on
violent side impacts or sever deceleration. You can have a pretty
serious accident without airbag deployment. Thankfully. Airbags are
expensive.

The old high end Pentax zooms are excellent
too, the K85-210/4.5, M80-200/4.5 and the A70-210/4.
These sell for less than the DA/50-200 and can do
FF in the future. They are bulkier though. Of course
always avoid the old cheapo pentax zooms like the takumar-A
and variable aperture models.

Quit your belly aching. The great majority of the season's races are
in Europe, and while you east-coasters can watch it live while you
have toast and coffee before work, we on the west coast have to get up
at 3 or 4 AM to watch. Malyasia will be at 2 AM for us, qualifying and
the race, China at midnight. Then we get back to what gets me up early
for Bahrain, 5 AM.

The F1 website this year is full of information. http://www.formula1.com/
One thing I signed up for (free) is real time timing RSS feed,
along with atmospheric measurements every 5 minutes. The timing is
accompanied by real time commentary from some unknown entity that hits

going

for a "commercial" or "product" kind of shot.

Both of my shots from the PDML yearbook were made with the DA50-200.
One from the short end, one from the long end. For its size and price,
it's a damn impressive lens.

him out a few hours later, more or less intact.

Here are some pictures he took of the car, which is a write-off -

more airbags than Dolly Parton, yet none of them deployed. When he

Makes me feel less unprotected by my airbags now

Looks to me like the Fiat clipped the Audi in the left rear hard
enough to spin the car around rapidly enough so it rolled up onto it's
right side and slid down the road and off into some foliage. The
"cutting out" the rescue workers did was probably to bust out the rear
window, go in and cut his seat belts, board and brace him, and drag
him out the back. The car being up on it's passenger side left Bob's
brother hanging by his belts, and perhaps not able to undo them as his
weight was against their locking pawls and cams, or he might has
covered the release with his body whilst hanging like that.

Nasty business, and I'm glad he is OK. He'll be sore. Bummer about the
car. Looks like a nice ride, one of the beefier Audis. The bitch is
that the Fiat was probably repairable for a lot less.

Re: Tele-zooms

2009-03-29 Thread Pawel Hottowy
I had the same "problem" a few months ago. I was even considering
seriously the DA* 50-135 - the specs of this lens look just great to
me. But after watching large number of samples I decided that I
actually like the overall look of images from 50-200 more than from
the 50-135 (maybe this is just me). What you loose with 50-200 is of
course speed (the f/5.6 at 200mm is rather optimistic) but the
color/contrast it offers look just great to me, and I do not mean
"considering the price". It is also very compact and the build quality
to me is better than for example DA 16-45.

The lens requires substantial correction for back-focus on my k10d.

cheers,
Pawel

Good idea, think execution is sort of lacking and/or this one needs some

Not at all, that's not the sort of acceleration that airbags protect
against. Airbags protect you when you drive into a brick wall. Unless,
of course, you're short. If you're under 5'2" or something, then an
airbag deploying is as likely to break your neck as it is to save your
life.

There is also the detail that if you were driving down a mountain
road, and you were to hit a deer, and it were to cause the airbag to
deploy, you would no longer be able to steer your car and could end up
driving off a cliff because of the airbag deploying. If this were to
happen, the car company would be under a fair amount of financial
liability, so they want to make sure that airbags don't deploy unless
they are really needed.

In short, the car has to hit something very hard in order for the
airbags to deploy.

As to the cars with all of the side airbags, I've heard that having
them deploy can do things like rupturing your eardrums.

You do know that you are not supposed to drive with your thumb wrapped
around the steering wheel if you have airbags? If you hit something
and the airbag deploys, and your thumb is "inside the steering wheel",
the airbag exploding and throwing your arms to the side, will likely
break both of your thumbs.

If your hands are at the top of the steering wheel and the airbag
deploys, it'll slam your arm and hand into your face. Want to know
what it's like to be punched in the face by Jackie Chan?

I think the natural light ones are nice, but suspect the studio ones will

Actually an announcer on Speed TV said the late start was a concession to
Bernie, who wanted a race under lights. They refused due to the extra cost
but went with a later start as a concession. Apparently the Australian F1
race has not been a money maker for the organizers & they weren't going to

Scary situation, good outcome.

I note that he was hit by a Fiat. I don't know the model, assume it
is smaller than the Audi. If so, validation of the notion that bigger
is better when it comes to collisions. From the photos it is hard to
see enough damage to write the car off.

How could the Fiat drive into someone from the right like that? A
failure to yield when entering a roundabout or merging from the
right? It looks like a glancing blow, not what you would get if
someone was crossing from a side road.

I know at least two instances of people writing off cars with no or
almost no cosmetic damage. One was an accident, the other stupidity.
Both involved terminal damage to the driveline. One was cause by black
ice and a rock gutting the transaxle on a Suparu Impreza, the other a
car sliding under a truck and taking out the tranny, driveshaft and
transfer case.

Re: OT: Write-off

2009-03-29 Thread Larry Colen
I'm glad that your brother is not seriously hurt.

My rule of thumb when estimating the cost of body work repairs is that
every body panel (fender, door, hood) that gets damaged will cost
$1,000 to repair/replace. If the body panel is structural, like the
roof, double that.

Add to that the cost of frame straightening or any damaged mechanical
parts.

If the airbags deploy, the car will cost more to repair than it would
to replace.

Just looking at the pictures, I'm guessing $8,000-12,000 to
repair. That's not counting the cost of repairng the damage of being
cut out (which I don't see in those pictures). If you don't care
about cosmetics, the car could probably be made driveable for $3,000,
but I don't know how much damage was done cutting him out, or how much
was done to the frame.
