Excellent stuff. Two points.

1. How old is he?
2. I think that very often he consistently tilts his shots to the left
while this is unnecessary. I think, you could point this out to him in
a way that will not sound as discouragement.

Some brilliant pics in this set.

Re: another completely useless off topic question - Roller Bat/RollerBall

2009-06-07 Thread Paul Sorenson
I grew up in a small town north of Madison, WI and 500 was the game to
play if we couldn't get enough players for a game of "real" ball. We
played with a softball or a baseball, which ever one of us could come up
with. Most of us didn't have the money for a glove, so we played bare
handed for the most part.

Don't know if it's the same as your "Chicago Finger", but in grade
school I jammed a finger playing softball so they sent me to the local
doc. He was one of those small-town, no BS docs and he asked to take a
look at my finger. He said "H" when I showed him, then quickly got
a grip on my finger on each side of the jammed knuckle and pulled - no
more jammed finger. He was a little on the looney side. One night he
sat at the bar in one of the local restaurants with a pile of paper
plates and a bottle of liquid shoe polish. He'd draw a face on a paper
plate with the shoe polish dauber, then sail the plate like a Frisbee
out into the crowd. His wife finally had him committed and after he was
released about 6 months later he liked to brag that he was the only guy
in town who had a certificate that said he was *NOT* crazy.

Ahhh, the good times of growing up in a small town...

Anyone else know this game from childhood? I remembered it while
thinking of something else the "Consumer Reports cool cameras" thread
sparked off.

Required equipment:
Baseball or softball
Baseball or softball bat
backyard or vacant lot
a bunch of kids

Rulz:
One batter, pitcher & catcher - everyone else is out-fielders. Anyone
can join or leave the game at any time.

One base, home plate (which doesn't actually have to be a real base,
we often used a cinder block)

3 strikes yer' out, where a strike = swing and miss; if you don't
swing, it's a "ball". 4 balls = one strike.

"NO! You can't throw it overhand. You have to pitch it underhand so we
can hit it! ... Because I said so. It's my bat and my ball."

Hit balls are fielded and the batter lays the bat down across the
"plate". Fielder throws or rolls the ball toward the bat, attempting
to hit the bat with the ball.

If the ball hits the bat, the batter becomes the new catcher, the
catcher becomes the new pitcher and the fielder becomes the new batter.

Balls caught in the air or on first bounce (first hop) count the same
as having hit the bat.

If the thrown ball misses the bat, the batter continues for another 3
strikes.

If the batter strikes out, you argue about whose turn it is to bat
next. Optionally, you can argue about whether the thrown ball actually
hit the bat or hopped over it.

The game is over when whoever owns the ball & bat has to go home for
supper ... or something else interesting happens.

We played this in our backyard for hours and hours during the summer
when I was in grade school, because my mom was the only one in the
neighborhood who didn't mind having a bunch of noisy kids around the
house.

days, we played without mitts. They've since sissified the game and
now wear modified baseball gloves. Pansies.

A sixteen inch softball makes an interesting game.
If you watch some of the good players in Grant Park,
you quickly learn that the ball cannot be driven out of reach.
It's fun to watch strong men windup to hit a 'home run' and get a
short fly ball.
It makes for an interesting game.

Or if your macro lens has a tripod foot & you are using an Arca swiss style

Boris,
All the macro lenses change focal lengths as you focus them.
You can get around this with a bellows and rack on a tripod.
You set the focal length/field of view you want, and then
crank the whole lens/bellows/camera back & forth on the rack.
It's clumsy, but allows a very precise framing.

This is very interesting, though it seems that toward macro range the
lens
is changing its focal length. I am saying so because I observe that when
I
focus the field of view changes as well. FA 100/3.5 is surely a
fascinating

optic, although simple.

In #1 I must admit that I was starting to feel every so slightly dizzy

what I concluded for myself that in most cases (especially in shots
similar to your #1 and #2 by composition), I like seeing more DOF.

In #1 I would've tried to make sure that [almost] all stamens (anthers
in particular) are in focus.
By association, I recalled a few shots of mine related to raspberries
which illustrate what I mean.
It is also a raspberry "flower":
IMGP9428.jpg
IMGP9503.jpg
IMGP9527.jpg In these three, I also would like to see large DOF,
especially in the

As for #3, - as in this one, I find that "frontal" shots of some flowers
don't work for me. I discarded many of mine for this reason.

And to complete the raspberry theme:

I lied. For a very short time I owned a '73 Mach I with a 351
Cleveland, C6 tranny and 9" rear end. I never found out how fast it
would go because it got too squirrelly to steer at about 110. 9mpg if
I drove the speed limit. 6mpg if I drove it like it was meant to be
driven. It's the only American car I've ever owned that I actually
liked. But a couple months after I bought it a Mustang collector
offered me nearly twice what I paid for it. I think he was going to
pull the drive train and scrap the body.

Too much flash to see blurring of the spokes. Plus, the bike was going
quite slow. It was just a grab shot as the bike was leaving a parking
lot where I was shooting other things. The focal length was 21mm, so
that gives you an idea of how close I was. But I was intrigued by the

The last time I looked at an HD was in the mid-90s and the
middle-aged, gold card bikers had pretty much driven the price through
the roof. If you could even find a bike on a showroom floor it was
marked up about 20% over MSRP plus it had about $3000 worth of
accessory chrome stuck to it. Guys like me who just wanted a
motorcycle bought Japanese and European bikes because we could get one
without getting bent over.

From what I understand, over the last few years HD has been producing

more bikes than their dealers can sell. My wife's cousin was recently
laid off from the York plant. What's happened is that the gold card
crowd is getting too old to ride, or they've just lost interest in it,
but there's no one to replace them. Those of us who should be buying
their bikes were laughed at 15 years ago when we tried to negotiate a
fair price on the damn things. I won't forget the way I was treated
by HD's dealers and it will be a cold day in hell before you see me on
one.

Pretty much the same here. There was the same scenario with the lumpen
new mini (sorry MINI) although that vehicle didn't have the pseudo
pirate lifestyle thing attached to it.

One thing confused me, and it's your fault. Water is coming off the
dam on the right, and the same on the left, including the fish ladder,
but it is going no where! Not back under the dam, surely, then where?
Is the stitching so bad on the bottom left that you've lost the

OT: another completely useless off topic question - Roller Bat/Roller Ball

2009-06-07 Thread John Sessoms
Anyone else know this game from childhood? I remembered it while
thinking of something else the "Consumer Reports cool cameras" thread
sparked off.

Required equipment:
Baseball or softball
Baseball or softball bat
backyard or vacant lot
a bunch of kids

Rulz:
One batter, pitcher & catcher - everyone else is out-fielders. Anyone
can join or leave the game at any time.

One base, home plate (which doesn't actually have to be a real base, we
often used a cinder block)

3 strikes yer' out, where a strike = swing and miss; if you don't swing,
it's a "ball". 4 balls = one strike.

"NO! You can't throw it overhand. You have to pitch it underhand so we
can hit it! ... Because I said so. It's my bat and my ball."

Hit balls are fielded and the batter lays the bat down across the
"plate". Fielder throws or rolls the ball toward the bat, attempting to
hit the bat with the ball.

If the ball hits the bat, the batter becomes the new catcher, the
catcher becomes the new pitcher and the fielder becomes the new batter.

Balls caught in the air or on first bounce (first hop) count the same as
having hit the bat.

If the thrown ball misses the bat, the batter continues for another 3
strikes.

If the batter strikes out, you argue about whose turn it is to bat next.
Optionally, you can argue about whether the thrown ball actually hit the
bat or hopped over it.

The game is over when whoever owns the ball & bat has to go home for
supper ... or something else interesting happens.

We played this in our backyard for hours and hours during the summer
when I was in grade school, because my mom was the only one in the
neighborhood who didn't mind having a bunch of noisy kids around the house.

Re: Galia and Boris PESO #021

2009-06-07 Thread Igor Roshchin

Boris,

Yes, I find that all macro lenses and macro filters decrease DOF.
The higher the magnification, the shallower the DOF.
(As Bob mentioned, - bellows is a solution, but I have never tried
that myself.)
I usually try to close down the aperture to enhance DOF.
For many shots I am using F-DA 100/2.8 Macro, and sometimes even
in a combination with a Pentax TC - following the idea mentioned
by somebody most likely on PDML.

Here are the links to the raspberry "flowers" shots.
Sorry, that what happens when one is trying to multitask and the
message is written over a course of several hours/days. :-)

http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9428.jpg
http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9503.jpg
http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9527.jpg

They all are done in a controlled environment, but DOF problem is
the same. In your case, - it is just more complicated.
(Upon a quick look, I didn't find any of the ones I took in the "wild"
handy, - I didn't quite like them, hence I didn't bother to post
them anywhere.)

By the way, for some macro shots, I found Pedco UltraPod II to be
quite useful:
http://www.rei.com/product/777250
http://www.pedcopods.com/specsup2.htm
It is inexpensive, light, and compact. It is not perfect, but helps:
It is sturdy enough for *istDS, and I would expect it to provide
reasonable stability even with a havier camera, e.g. K20D.

Boris,
Maybe we can get Frank to pedal out and take some pictures of flower
petals. :-)
I understand about Galia learning photography step by step, but I
would mention the faded petal.
It isn't so much a photo thing as a nature, biological process, faded
beauty thing.

Re: Galia and Boris PESO #021

2009-06-07 Thread Bob Sullivan
Boris,
All the macro lenses change focal lengths as you focus them.
You can get around this with a bellows and rack on a tripod.
You set the focal length/field of view you want, and then
crank the whole lens/bellows/camera back & forth on the rack.
It's clumsy, but allows a very precise framing.

Godfrey, what I am thinking of is this. You have 4 4-hour sessions all
together (2 days * 2 sessions each). So you could choose one photograph
for each session and show how to process/render it from start to finish,
may be in several ways time/complexity of processing permitting. If you
choose each photo from its own genre (be it b/w or landscape or nocturne
or anything else) - it would give your audience wholesome experience, so
to say.

What would you like to see in a "beyond the basics" Photoshop

time for a given workshop, but don't limit your ideas to just what you
think could be covered in that time.

Email either to me or to the list as you feel appropriate.
All ideas welcome. Tnx!

Re: Car History (was Re: Consumer Reports on "cool cameras")

2009-06-07 Thread Ken Waller

I'd like to drive one some time, to see how much difference there is
in handling between the Porsche and a BMW.

Funny you should mention that

Back in the spring of 05 I got a post card from Porsche, inviting me to any
Porsche dealer to drive any Porsche I desired. I chose the Boxster cause I
had heard some great things and it was relatively within my reach -
financially.

Well after an hour test drive I was thoroughly impressed, so much so that I
instantly went from curious to intent. Took the wife for a ride and she
NUDGED me on to get one ! I talked a little more seriously with the sales
guy (a really great car guy who never tried to sell me a thing - he let the
car sell itself). Reading me correctly, he actually told me of some things
not to put on the car. I then ordered a new 05 'S' to be built in Finland &
presto about 3 months later my Seal Grey Boxster S ( built to my specs,
(including 19" wheels/tires, wind blocker & floor mats) magically appeared
in the driveway.

I bet if you went to your local dealer, you could easily get a demo drive !

I this is the hardest thing to convey to anyone who just thinks a car
has four wheels and gets you from point a to point b. Porsche make
drivers cars straight off the factory floor, I wish I still was able
to afford one (or two as used to be the case).

Of course what I'd really like is to persuade somebody I know, albeit

Hi Team,

I was inspired to share this image after Mr Savage's recent dam pano,
nothing special just an example of what can be achieved, commendations
or criticisms welcomed of course.

The image shot hand held using a K10D and smc PENTAX-DA 16-45mm F4 ED
AL at fl 16mm, f8, vertical and was automatically assembled using
Autopano and rendered in a cylindrical projection. The source files
consisted of 16 2MP JPGs generated in camera (lots of overlap, that's
the key to shooting successful hand held panos in my experience)
covering about 270 degrees horizontal. It does contain obvious gross
stitching errors at the far left due to parallax error and lack of
cropping but otherwise I think it's pretty good.

My salary stays the same, in fact it might even be a bit better, since

I'll also be taking my camera along with me from time to time, so this

bit...

The down-side (for me, if not for you) is that I don't have a home
computer and since I won't be sitting at this work computer after

This could be interesting...

Re: Photoshop workshop question ... pdml

2009-06-07 Thread Boris Liberman
Godfrey, what I am thinking of is this. You have 4 4-hour sessions all
together (2 days * 2 sessions each). So you could choose one photograph
for each session and show how to process/render it from start to finish,
may be in several ways time/complexity of processing permitting. If you
choose each photo from its own genre (be it b/w or landscape or nocturne
or anything else) - it would give your audience wholesome experience, so
to say.

HTH.

What would you like to see in a "beyond the basics" Photoshop

time for a given workshop, but don't limit your ideas to just what you
think could be covered in that time.

Email either to me or to the list as you feel appropriate.
All ideas welcome. Tnx!

Re: FA28-70/4 on digital: any good ?

2009-06-07 Thread Joseph McAllister
I paid $100 US for one a year ago to replace my original which had the
element separation problem. It is still going well (let me check...)
today. Very small and light, inner tube wobbles a bit like most of
those from that era, but that's not detrimental.

Still, I tend to use the FA 28-105 more, when I go back to those
lenses. Don't know why, as it's heavier, and wobbles more. I guess for
the range.

50 Euros seems a bargain.

At least they set up plants in Noth America, although they had to be coerced

ENTICED might be a better word.

The manufacturers were already looking to build over here to save the
cost shipping. Even if they'd located the factories inside UAW
headquarters, labor costs would still have been lower than domestic
Japanese wages.

The plants went to the states who offered the largest giveaways & tax

AFAIU, the separation is a matter of time and given the time when the

There are better lenses out there.
