Oh yes I did forget about the inability to see the K2's needle in low

My beef with the LX meter is that it only reads in full-stop

On-topic at last!

2009-10-18 Thread Bob W
For the first time in how many years? I'm writing an on-topic post.

I was mooching around in one of the camera shops in Central London yesterday
and noticed in one of their cabinets a SMC-A 28-80/3.5-4.5 lens, and it was
only about £69- if I remember correctly.

Now, back in the day when I used Pentax gear I would have killed to find one
of these lenses - they seem to be quite rare over here, and I never did own
one, although the non-SMC version is quite common. I was very tempted to buy
it, but eventually overcome the temptation since I'm highly unlikely ever to
use it.

It's this one:
http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/short/A28-80f3.5-4.5.html

But, there is is. If anyone on the list is interested, it is at the London
Camera Exchange on the Strand.
http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/

It doesn't feature in their Used list on the web, but you could drop them an
email or give them a call if you're interested.

Bob, evidently you indicated your intent in the previous century on

Mobile phones with GPS are rather cheap today (

software, terrain nav. software or simple GPX loggers. I did this on our
trip to London and my phone was able to log continously for 10 hours and
using 60% of the battery. Can send you the files for the Saturday if you
 want them.

Stig I should thank you again, I've been using the modified logger and

It's a DS actually, not a D. They had a D there for a while that I'd
looked at (For $250), but overall I just don't like the D as much as
the DS (I've owned both in the past, the D was my first DSLR and first
Pentax, I owned a DS briefly before getting my K10D), it's less
responsive despite the better control layout and certain things, like
the ISO setting method, are not well thought out. The DS also has a
nicer grip.

placenames. :-)

I wasn't aware that GPS enabled cellphones were that cheap now. Thanks
for the tip! Makes me regret buying the GlobalSat unit since my old
phone is falling apart. :-(

Did a test run today of the GlobalSat today, btw, with subsequent
computer uploading and matching. I used GeoSetter to merge the GPS
data (from a *.gpx file) into the DNG files, and Lightroom assimilated
the new metadata without glitch.

But I still have the tiniest tinge of envy of the Nikon GPS that
attaches directly to camera and writes into the raw files directly.

Yes, looks nice. One important feature is the AA batteries. Li-Ion batteries
are usually dead after a few years and next to impossible to replace on a
unit which was out of production several years ago.

Mobile phones with GPS are rather cheap today (
http://www.dustinhome.no/pd_5010198934.aspx ) and can run car navigation
software, terrain nav. software or simple GPX loggers. I did this on our trip
to London and my phone was able to log continously for 10 hours and using 60%
of the battery. Can send you the files for the Saturday if you want them.

It's the rule makers that make it difficult to pass (though there was
a good bit of that today) by restricting the technologies in a effort
to curtail costs to the teams enlarging the field of those who can
therefor afford to participate in the sport.

Next year, they'll try yet another set of rules, like no refueling,
which, in my opinion, will make it even harder to pass with everyone's
fuel load the same.

As in any sport, those with the deepest pockets and the most stealth
in squeezing around rules restrictions will have the best chance of
winning.

Go USA-1! Or whatever they'll be called.

Button got a bit of help from Hamilton today.

There's an article here about Button which touches on this question of the
balance between the driver and the technology:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8312844.stm

But pretty much every sport relies on technology at the highest levels. All
the top level sports people have large amounts of money and science backing
them. I don't think you can pick on F1 alone for this. We have another world
champion today, Beth Tweddle in gymnastics. But as talented as she doubtless
is, if London wasn't holding the Olympics in 2012 I don't think she would be
the champion today. Similar considerations apply to our cyclists. But for
all that, the individuals themselves have to put superman amounts of effort
and dedication for long years into their sport. I don't think it behoves the
armchair sportspeople among us to knock them for taking advantage of
favourable conditions.

Did you get one with just the one bud rose?  The foreground roses are
both very pretty and well shot, but I think that perhaps the poignancy
of the contrast would be increased by having a single less gloriously
robust rose in front of that background.

I agree. I'd be tempted to crop the bottom third or so of this image

No longer...

While F1 is the major league of motorsports and obviously requires the
most skill and endurance, almost any race car driver has to have the
instincts of an athlete.

I'm working on an article about drag racing funny car drivers. I've
noticed that it takes quite a few years for a newbie to become
competitive, and a look at what goes in in the four seconds it takes
to go from start to finish, from zero to 300, makes it easy to see
why. The g-forces generated by 8000 horsepower are astronomical, and
the cars move around constantly. The vibration obscures one's view and
can even break teeth. Funny car drivers wear a boxer's mouthpiece.
Within one second after pushing the throttle to the floor, the car is
going 150 mph, and within that second it may require several steering
corrections, and if it starts shaking the tires the driver has to
try to gradually back off the throttle in tiny increments, then
catch it as soon as the shake disipates.. In another half second the
car will be going over 200 mph and will probably drift to one side or
the other. If there's the slightest imperfection on the track, it can
make a violent move. The exhaust volume produces considerable boost,
and if a cylinder weakens, the car will make a sudden move toward that
side of the track. It accelerates from 200 to 300 in less than two
seconds and may well erupt in flames at some point near the end of the
pass. As it passes the end of the grandstands, it can make a hard move
if there's a crosswind. That will happen at close to 300 mph. But a
correction has to be smooth and subtle. Sudden movements will put the
car right into the guardrail. Of course, driving that kind of beast
doesn't require any kind of athletic ability and anyone can do it:-).

Paul

frank

Years ago, I saw a physiology study where they were trying to isolate
what was special about different types of athletes. Some were pretty
obvious, but they couldn't find anything in particular about race car
drivers that separated them from other athletes. After some
brainstorming, they found that, alone among the groups, the racecar
drivers could read every word on a 45 RPM record while it was turning at
45 RPMs. Not that it's apropos of anything in particular, but I found
