Bought a Sony reader in September. The only paper books I've read
since then are ones unavailable in electronic format. The only gripe I
have with eReaders are the aggressive DRM systems. I went for Sony
over the Kindle for that particular reason. The Sony seems more
generic and less tied-up. In fact, Amazon seem like a literature
equivalent of Rockefeller to me.

As to curling up in front of the fire, I think the eReaders are just
as nice. For more extensive novels, it's a lot easier to hold and curl
up with in the first place.
The tactile feel of the pages... well... Can't say I miss it,
personally. And scent of paper can be anywhere on a scale from
pleasant to nauseating. No books smell the same, and many fall short
of pleasant. :-)

Tastes differ, of course. Whatever the device, the content is still king.

Re: PESO - BBall 2

2010-02-17 Thread Bruce Dayton
Yeah, the K-x seems to do what I need. I can say that I am feeling
much more comfortable about the upcoming gymnastic event - 3200 looks
pretty decent.

For this game I wanted to see what the body could do, so I put it on
sports mode, and picked the AF sensor just above middle (vertical
orientation). The sports mode sets AF to continuous and favors high
shutter speeds. It does not let me change the white balance while in
that mode. The metering was set to multi-segment. I am pretty much a RAW
shooter, but have to admit, I have
just been shooting jpg's with the K-x so far.

It really is a great little body - hard to find much to dislike and
it handles quite well. I could see it easily becoming the primary
shooting camera over my K20D. The AF seems to work a little better,
the AWB is better, the meter seems at least as good and the shooting
frame rate is faster. I even rather like the white body - goes
nicely with black lenses - sort of the anti Canon, if you will. White
body and black lenses instead of black body and white lenses.

I almost have a half mind to pick up another body for backup and
using the pair in my work. I am already having to contend with my 20
year old daughter who wants to use it instead of her *istD (can't
blame her).

 wrote:

Yes, I've noticed that: the beast on the sign looks more like a cow
or oxen than a moose.

There's a bit of recent city history that goes along with this. About
10 years ago a the city had a public art project called Moose in the
City:

http://www.toronto.ca/moose/home.htm

whereby several hundred identical moose were placed at various
locations and sponsors paid artists to decorate them. Some (but not
all of them) had commercial themes. It was actually pretty cool and
lots of fun.

At the end of it all the moose were auctioned off and funds given to charity.

A few dozen (mostly decrepit) moose remain in various locations. I
seem to remember this moose, decorated to look like (I'm guessing) a
Chinese Mandarin (or at least in some traditional Chinese costume)
originally being in some prominent place in Chinatown.

Obviously this market bought the moose at the post-installation
auction and is now using it for promotional purposes. I don't recall
how long that market has been known as the Lucky Moose Market. It
might pre-date the acquisition of said moose, which might explain the
different look for the moose on the sign. It wouldn't explain why
that moose looks so "un-moose-like"...

Thanks to everyone who looked and commented!

cheers,
frank

Feature wishlist

2010-02-17 Thread Larry Colen
I was photographing at a friend's blues jam last night, using it as a
chance to practice band photography. I decided to try using autofocus,
and the handy af point selection.

Looking at the photos, almost every one focuses on the microphone
instead of the musician. How about an autofocus mode where the camera
looks for something to focus on a little bit behind the default? This
would be handy for both musicians and birds in trees.

At the beginning of the evening, I tried a few using the strobist
suggestion of putting my flash on a monopod, and that seems very
promising, except for the detail that I end up short one hand, until I
come up with a harness to hold the monopod or something.

Re: Pentax in the UK

2010-02-17 Thread eckinator
I bought my Optio WP from them in 2005 and a top of the line Sony p&s
for work in 2004. Both were extremely cheap and took ages and some
strongly worded reminders to come through and were shipped from
France. Both were misdeclared as German merchandise and when I
complained about that I got a friendly mail after some waiting time
saying there wasn't any difference. At the time I didn't know better
because I had all my money to myself and normally just went to IRL
stores where I felt good about buying, preferentially small, owner
operated. I briefly considered pixmania again in 2007/2008 for Pentax
DSLR related gear but quickly backed off when I read their ratings
which were under 95% positive with a lot of people complaining of not
getting money back or repairs on their returned items which instead
seemed to get lost regularly without so much as a reaction from
Pixmania and for service they said often times you had to phone
directly to France... so I decided they have to be at least 10%
cheaper than the next vendor and accept my Amex online purchase
insurance for me to consider them again.

During the GBP low I shopped around for prices on a bunch of stuff -
still can kick myself for not ordering the 60-250 before Pentax jacked
the price up under my mouse - and found SRS Microsystems to always be
among the cheapest and they seem reputable to me - have you considered
them?

So my opinion in a nutshell: I would choose Pixmania only if they save
me so much money that it will be worth the risk and hassle...

Good luck
Ecke

BTW lowest price in Germany is roughly the same so ordering from here
won't help you

I looked. It is not an option on newer models. Also there is no

Myself, I seem to have caught one of the rare Easter Egg K10Ds with
random focus mode. I read something about an extremely limited iKod

PESO: Hermit Silhouette

Another short visit, and likely last of the season, to Gray Lodge State
Wildlife Area.
Little migratory bird activity, but always bring home a few "tries." Primarily
looking for hawks, but always with the thought of that surely that Golden Eagle
will be back and this time, I'll get the iconic shot.
Often come home with about a dozen hawk silhouettes.
The title is simply my constant impression of the Egret.
It's no big.

As Ecke said Pixmania is French. I'm sure I've bought something from
them at some point (Kodak CX6330 possibly, or memory card for it) long
ago. You might also want to try SRS though they're a bit more. They've

We haven't reached the end.

Photograph doesn't necessarily work directly, not anymore. But if there were
no photographs and no TV footage, what would we know about events in Iran?
Probably next to nothing. Dramatic photographs make people aware of what is
going on, which is useful in and of itself, but it also means that we can
pressurise our own governments into pressurising the bad guys (who are
sometimes our governments) into being a bit less bad. That can save lives.

Nice scene - not an eagle, but very nice anyway. On my main monitor

Personally I prefer it with just a touch of detail rather than a pure
silhouette.

Nicely silhouetted.
I'd prefer less blank background and more foreground reflections.

Another short visit, and likely last of the season, to Gray Lodge State
Wildlife Area.
Little migratory bird activity, but always bring home a few "tries."
Primarily looking for hawks, but always with the thought of that surely
that Golden Eagle will be back and this time, I'll get the iconic shot.

They've
been in the same shop in Watford since the early '90s at least.

Sorry Larry, but no autofocus system will be able to guess by itself
which part of the scene you want in focus.

One day you want the singer in focus, next day you want the mike in focus.
Future sytems, but not in the near future, will do this by reading your
mind.

Till than its better to use manual focus.

Looking at the photos, almost every one focuses on the microphone

looks for something to focus on a little bit behind the default? This
would be handy for both musicians and birds in trees.

At the beginning of the evening, I tried a few using the strobist
suggestion of putting my flash on a monopod, and that seems very
promising, except for the detail that I end up short one hand, until I
come up with a harness to hold the monopod or something.

Canon tried at one point with sensor watching where you look - I think
if that could be refined and matched up with correspondingly many

That's what a comely assistant is useful for.

More seriously ... ;-) ... I've done the same but instead of using a
monopod I've used a lightweight light stand. That gives the option to
shoot one-handed when it's possible, but then just spread the legs and
let it stand on its own when needed. An RF trigger and medium sized
flash unit with a bit of a diffuser on it works well for this purpose.

Some current monopods have a small set of tripod legs built in for
enhanced stability that might work for this, presuming it doesn't get
bumped.

There's so much *free* porn that, you'd never have time to watch it all.

Looks good on my monitor. I like it. Have you tried cropping, so the
bird is off center? That might be more effective. But a nice shot as
presented.

Composition is great but on my
monitor I would want the Egret either
darker or brighter, it looks sorta in between. But I like
the image a
lot.

Another short visit, and likely last of the season, to

Gray Lodge State Wildlife Area.

Little migratory bird activity, but always bring home

a few "tries." Primarily looking for hawks, but always with
the thought of that surely that Golden Eagle will be back
and this time, I'll get the iconic shot.

Often come home with about a dozen hawk silhouettes.
The title is simply my constant impression of the

Egret.

It's no big.

Comments gladly accepted
