But isn't the real question, "how many of them were keepers?" :)

I think a better question might be are you getting MORE keepers? And Why?

For myself, my percentage of keepers has gone up only slightly because
my standards have risen. What I might have considered a keeper before I
started shooting digital, I wouldn't consider one now.

While at the same time, I'm more willing to "take chances", to try and
make images I wouldn't have thought I could make before ... because the
few times I did try to make them I failed.

I can see right away whether the image matches my vision; whether I "got
the shot."

And it has benefited my film shooting as well. Maybe not as many
"keepers" from film as I used to get, but the ones I do get are better.

Nope wrong. The ring bayonet was not well beloved by most American
soldiers from the Revolution to the Civil war. Americans didn't want to
be bayoneted\, and didn't think it humane to do it to the enemy, they'd
rather shoot them, even at close range.

My old DI ain't gonn'a wann'a hear that.

I was, however, responding to an assertion someone made that the Swiss
still carry ceremonial daggers in lieu of swords as symbols of their
status as "free men" when they go to vote, and the statement that the
musket serves the a role analogous to the sword in American military
tradition.

Marrying the two traditions; should Americans feel the need for martial
symbols to bolster their courage for the daunting task of choosing
representatives, the bayonet & the powder horn might stand in for the
musket in the same way the ceremonial dagger stands for the sword ...
less cumbersome, particularly should you need an ad hoc stylus for the
Electronic Voting Machine.

You don't have to actually stab anyone if you don't want to, it's just a
symbol of our rough frontier heritage.

Great.
It's bad enough dealing with unpredictable idiots packing pistols.
When you start packing personal nukes you all will be a barrel of
monkeys.

The personal nuke is a chimera. How are people who can't even remember
when to get their oil changed going to handle the complex maintenance
requirements for nuclear weapons.

The smallest RELIABLE, i.e. it could be stockpiled and expected to
work when needed, weighs in around 50 lbs. And they're only good for 5
years or so in storage before they have to be returned to manufacturer
for disassembly and overhaul.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf6uX0hODuE

If you wanted to implement a Swiss model "tradition" in combination
with American "military history", the most reasonable equipage would
be to require all citizens to carry a powder horn and ring bayonet
into the voting booth.

Nope wrong. The ring bayonet was not well beloved by most American
soldiers from the Revolution to the Civil war. Americans didn't want to
be bayoneted\, and didn't think it humane to do it to the enemy, they'd
rather shoot them, even at close range.

Re: 50mm lenses and flare

2010-02-20 Thread P. J. Alling
Since the fa and the Super Takumar have pretty much identical optical
formulas and the FA has much improved coatings I doubt that the Tak.
will be better. I always found the 50 f1.7 to be very good but in
extreme situation you'll get flair with any lens.

Since I needed to keep changing lenses to get the right focal length,

It's a Purple Gallinule. It's a bit soft and I'd prefer a side-on or
front-quarter shot rather than the back, but the setting is nice and the
colors are certainly there.

Welcome to the public !
The bird is a Purple Gallinule

I like your shot... in the smaller version on your site... . When I
enlarge it , it gets too big and partly flows off my screen... nothing
to do with your photo just the site - or can you adjust the settings so
one of the options
is getting to see a photo that is 800 or 1000 pixels wide?

I don't mind the background not being blurred out - the environment is
part of the story... nice composition,
yes, a bit soft ... but a nice capture for birders , who would be able
to tell immediately who this guy is...

He is a wader - not a swimmer like a ducky -

PESO -- Heratic

2010-02-20 Thread P. J. Alling

Just a portrait of my medium format camera.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20heratic.html

Equipment: Pentax K20D/w SMC Pentax FA 43mm f21.9 Limited.

Notes: Direct flash from camera pupup flash.
Further notes, the Medalist II was a camera ahead of it's time. Flash
sync included X (strobe), when few strobes were available, When the
lens is retracted, it's not a lot bigger than the K20D yet produces 6x9
negatives on 620 spooled film. The rangefinder is very accurate and
easier to get used to than that on a Leica IIIc, though I wouldn't want
to use if as a stealthy street camera. The shutter is extremely quiet
though. Basically just 2.4 pounds of mid to late industrial age goodness...

Hi Z

No, not a duck. Down here something like that would be a Swamp Hen -
not sure what the Florida versions are called but someone is bound to
know.

That's a well composed photo with the bird looking in the right
direction to give the composition balance. It's a tad soft but a
'keeper' none the less.

I like it.

It's never been true, and it's quite important to make the distinction. We,

The Taliban have been around for a long time - long before al Qaeda and

Al Quada's leadership and the Taliban's leadership are joined by ties of

De-facto the leaders of Germany for the last two years of WWI), were

Russia out of WWI. It was a ploy that had interesting results. Thirty
years later Hitler fough Stalin, I won't comment on the morality of

I agree, but have fun finding 127 film. That's what my first camera,
a Brownie Starflash took. At least Holgas and Dianas take 120, film
that's still readily available (for now at least).

My mom still has my old Brownie packed away somewhere. Must dig it
out next time I'm in Halifax and see if I can snap a few off!

B&H has 127 film, as well as 620 & 828.

Looks like their 110 is gone, but I got enough in the freezer to last
the rest of my life.

The Frugal Photographer has 110, 120, 126 & 127 - as well as film for
your old Minox spy cameras.

http://www.frugalphotographer.com/

And they have flash bulbs, flash cubes and flip flash.

It was the Baby Brownie that took 127 film. You can find full size
Brownies that take 620, some even take 120 without modification as
well. Now I don't shoot a brownie, I a couple of Clacks, (120), that I
didn't even have to buy, they were given to me, and a Kodak Medalist II,
(which is decidedly not a toy camera), which takes 620 film. It's the
same stock as 120 on narrower spools. I re-spool my own film, and if
you've even considered a Diana then re-spooling 120 to 620 just makes it
a little geekier, how much better is that? Plus it gives the
opportunity to add all sorts of random defects to the film.

It's never been true, and it's quite important to make the distinction. We,
the west, are going to have to come to terms with the Taliban at some point.
The Taliban have been around for a long time - long before al Qaeda and
their strand of fundamentalism. They are mentioned in despatches sent from
Afghanistan by the British during Victorian times.

It's unlikely that we'll come to terms with al Qaeda, which will probably
wither away or mutate into something else, rather the way Palestinian
terrorism of the 70s did.

Yet Another Non-Paying Job.

Still, it should be fun.

The local bike mag in which I had a photo published last summer is
getting their spring issue together (it published quarterly). One
article is a sort of person-in-the-street interview, a "question of
the month". Today I wander about with a very attractive young lady as
she asks cyclists the question and records their answer. Then I snap
their photo and it should all be in the upcoming issue.

When they asked me if I wanted to do it, it sounded like they thought
it would be boring, and I said, "Are you kidding? This is what I do
weekends anyway - take pictures of people and their bikes on the
streets of Toronto. Sounds like fun!"

And so I'm off...

From what I can tell you've been off for quite a while   ;+}

Atlex is now offering the Epson 11880 for just 8K -- with free

K3 inks through nine channel heads, so that's about as good as it gets
.The printer can turn out 64 inch wide pics, so if you're printing a
rectangular image that means you can go to 8 feet x 5 feet. or how about
a 15 feet by 5 feet panorama? Yeah, the ink might get expensive, but
what's a little money spent in the pursuit of art? Of course, you'll
need that 645D to generate files large enough for this printer, so
figure a cool twenty grand or so. Still a bargain by any measure.

I want one. I hope Santa and the Easter Bunny are listening.

Well, to precis it for you, he apologised personally to everyone on the
planet for having screwed all his sponsorship deals. It was obviously the
most important story on the entire planet so every news outlet in this
country had it big on the front page.

Back it up, Frank.

http://www.thefreeradical.ca/Violent_crime_statistics_Canada.htm
Specifically, "Violent crime rate (per 100K) change from 1962-2006:
221 to 951 or a 300%+ increase"

vs.

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_04/offenses_reported/violent_crime/index.html

Furthermore, the FBI is known to encourage police departments in the
US to report crime statistics based on the charges filed. So if I'm
charged with battery, that's what gets into the statistics. If I make
a deal with the prosecutor or the charges are dismissed or I'm found
not guilty, it's still in the stats as battery. I have no idea how
this works in Canada, but in GB the statistics are based on the
resolution. I'm sure you figure out where this leads.

Your mayor has been, very publicly, pointing his finger south for a
while now, blaming the US for all the guns involved in violent crime
in Toronto. The fact is, there are no facts. He's got media reports
and knee-jerking lefties to base it on and that's it.
