Welcome. Very nice composition. It looks over-processed in some way to me. The colours in that stream look unnatural to me, but I like that you're taking pictures of birds in flight rather than just sitting on a twig. Bob Hi all, This is my third attempt at joining the discussions on this mailing list. Now that I know it requires plain text formatting, with any luck, this time my message will actually make it through. By way of introduction, my name is Walt Gilbert, I bought my Pentax K-x (my first new DSLR) on May 1 of this year, and I've fallen in love with it. My interest in photography started a little over a year ago, when I borrowed my dad's Canon Powershot to take snapshots at a local drag strip. After being disappointed with my first point-and-shoot (Nikon Coolpix S500) I decided I ought to get a DSLR and actually learn how to use one. So, back in November, I bought a used (but well taken care of) Olympus E20n off eBay for a little over $100 plus shipping -- great pictures, excruciatingly slow write speed. Then, a friend loaned me his Canon Rebel 300D, which I really enjoyed using. But, of course, I felt I really needed to get a camera of my own, and started doing some research to see what would be the best value for the dollar, and the Pentax K-x was just beginning to generate some buzz. For several months, I anguished -- do I go with Canon, Nikon, Olympus ... or do I dare go with the Pentax and break away from the herd. In the meantime, I picked up a second job to start socking away a few dollars here and there while I mulled it over. When the time finally came, I settled on the K-x -- and even then, the guy at the camera shop seemed to be steering me toward a Sony! Re: SMC Pentax-A* Macro 1:4 200mm ED
A* lenses can actually be a good investment if purchased at the right price. About 2000 ish I bought an A* 85/1.4 for about 750 GBP and I sold it a couple of years later for nearly 900 GBP to a Japanese eekBayer. I don't remember how much I paid for the next A*85/1.4 - I think it was about 700 GBP again. Then I cut the aperture lever off. This makes it pretty unique, although I would hazard a guess there could be one or two others in the world in the same condition. I have no intention of selling it, but as it sits with an EF mount on it right now, although the market would be very limited, I would expect any Canonites to pay a premium for such a lens - the nearest equal EF lens is the 85/1.2 which goes for about 900-1200 GBP used. One (or two :) could argue the A* is a better lens. I once wanted the A*200/4. Yup, that's a T shirt right there -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Newbie (a reply to all)
Thanks to all of you for the kind welcomes and critiques! I wish I could take the time to write out a direct reply to each one of you, but I'm about to have to head in to work for the day, and will be working at both jobs for the next couple of days. So, I'll be working from 8:00 AM 'til around midnight until the weekend comes. (Gotta make that dollar to invest in lenses, you know.) Suffice it to say I appreciate all the responses and will keep them in mind in the future. I do plan on picking up a good macro lens at some point. The Takumar I used is the f/2.5, and it's the Taiwan-made version (it's my first lens purchase outside the two kit lenses). I didn't know a lot about it until AFTER I'd made the purchase. Some of the over-processed look is likely due to my trying to compensate for the lens's softness with the camera's custom image settings. I'm vacillating on what to get next -- a longer zoom for birding, or a good, fast prime. A lot will hinge on budget constraints. I do enjoy taking bird shots more than anything else -- at least at this point. I started out trying to catch them in-flight simply because that seemed like the most challenging shot to capture. And I figured if I can get that down, I'll learn a lot about manual focusing in the process. Again, thanks so much for the warm welcome. I look forward to participating in the discussion, and expect I'll enjoy getting to know all of you fellow Pentaxians. But, I stuck to my guns and went with the K-x with the 18-55mm and 50-200mm lens kit. And I've been utterly happy ever since. I LOVE my Pentax. Re: Sorting photos
Reply interspersed... On 7/6/2010 11:06 AM, Larry Colen wrote: There is some truth to this. If I'm shooting static scenes, in good light, I don't tend to take quite so many frames. If I'm shooting a static scene in challenging light, I'll bracket the hell out of it in 3 dimensions (ISO, shutter speed, AND aperture), partly to make sure that I get the shot, and partly in the hopes that I'll learn what works with that camera in that situation. Hmmm, I should say that this does seem not entirely logical to me. I kind of have in mind an idea how I'd like it to look and set my mind and camera accordingly. I rarely do many takes in the cases you described above. What I do bracket is composition - vertical, horizontal, different angles of view, etc... I also tend to shoot a lot of action shots in light that is too low for the autofocus to work properly. In theory, I could use AF to prefocus, except that people are moving and my fast primes don't have quick shift focus, so I just leave it in manual focus. And I'm afraid that if it is dark enough that I can't see the split prism in the middle of my katzeye screen, I'm pretty crappy at manual focus. I just did the first pass on my photos from tonight, and even in good light (ISO 6400 f/2 1/30 second) I'm afraid that my manual focus isn't as good as it should be. It seems that the only thing worse than my manual focusing, is the camera's auto focus. If it actually manages to focus on something in time to get the shot, chances are that it's the wood grain in the floor rather than the dancers. Yes, when light is low (talking from first hand experience yesterday) K-7 AF becomes unbearably slow for action shooting. Well, perhaps you could see if you have proper gear for using it in manual focus mode properly. I don't have many problems (up until certain degree of darkness of course) with A 50/1.2 and KE screen on my K-7. But then when it becomes darker than my own threshold it irks heck out of me. There is also the case that I'm not good enough to just click the shutter at exactly the right moment when people are dancing. I know when I'd do something cool if I was leading, but I don't always know what the person I'm photographing is going to improvise, so I shoot a lot of photos, because this might be when something cool is happening. Well, anticipation is a tough thing to master. I for one know I haven't gotten as good at it as I'd like to be. But what I've found helpful is shooting with the second eye open. Then my vision is somewhat distorted but still pretty close to normal and so if something interesting is walking into the frame, I am more ready than with the other eye closed. Although for me it works with normal lenses (50 and 43), less so with other focal lengths. When I'm photographing people (portrait sessions and such) I just plain shoot a lot, because I just can't tell when someone's smile will work well on camera. I'd rather blow an extra $.25 worth of hard drive, than miss a shot. Well, for portrait sessions you usually control the light ;-). That's not the problem. I'm just crappy at focusing quickly on moving objects in low light. I'd be happy to have software that would flag the photos where nothing is in focus. Although it does sound heretic, but perhaps going Nikon will be a good idea as their AF is said to be superior to that of Pentax. I don't know how it can look so sharp in the viewfinder and be so far out of focus on the sensor. That is very simple. Looking in VF you see something similar to the very small print. And the smaller the print the more difficult it is to tell apart in focus and out of focus objects... It probably is. I try to make up for my lack of technical skill by taking lots of shots. It is never too late to improve one's skills... Especially given how motivated you are. William Robb -- From: Bipin Gupta Subject: Large DSLRs and Phobia Dear William, I was in the US Canada last Autumn, and I noticed a distinct phobia and fear in the US, but not in Canada, especially if you are carrying a large bag with your DSLR and Lenses. There are checks everywhere, at the Museum, Zoo, Science Centers, Tourist Bureau etc - may be good for safety and security, but it is so stressful. DSLR owners are specially petrified when asked to switch on their camera - what if the battery has run down and it does not come on and so on. People and the authorities don't realize that it is the smaller cameras - pen types, phones, watches, midgets and compacts that are a better tool for the terrorist, rather than the larger DSLRs. I think we will all have to start wearing BADGES proclaiming I am a Photographer and NOT a terrorist. I suppose the Press chaps are safe with their Badges. Maybe next time I will accredit myself to some famous News Bureaus. May the Force be with you. Bipin B. Gupta.
