Re: Quake update

After our little 7.1 back in '89, one of the games I'd play was guessing the
distance and magnitude of the aftershocks. The delta-T between the p-waves
and the t-waves, along with the sharpness of the movement would give me a
pretty good idea of the distance. I'd use that distance as a fudge factor on
the intensity*time and guess the magnitude. By the time we stopped having
aftershocks, my butt was a fairly well calibrated seismograph.

Interesting :)

I thought I was guessing about right but many of the aftershocks are being
located within a couple of miles of my house. For a given shake I find I need
to subtract about 1 from my estimate of the magnitude. But half the
aftershocks are coming from the other end of the fault, maybe 30 miles away.
They're all very shallow as well so the local ones are VERY sharp. They are
definitely reducing in frequency. I saw a good graphic in a news article
today...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/canterbury-earthquake/4114666/Quake-Aftershocks-for-weeks

Just found there's a wikipedia page about our quake. Never thought to look...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Canterbury_earthquake

Good luck, try to enjoy the ride.

I got out of the house today and that's really helped a lot. I've been cooped
up in here for most of the week, spending the daylight hours alone and trying
to work.

I went for a 2hr walk in the morning, then I went for a ride on my new bike
(its first ride, it's only been a week). Found some fairly substantial
cracking on a road that I've been riding in the mornings lately. Didn't take a
camera, sorry.

Then after lunch I managed to get into the city and pick up my commuter bike.
Major milestone there and another weight off my mind as I had no idea what
state it was in (exactly as I left it). Overall I was really surprised by what
I saw in town.

After I got back I was a complete zombie so I took our bean bag out into the
sun and had a snooze.

Despite the media photos, the CBD looks almost totally fine. Standing in
Cathedral Square, I could see a bit of cosmetic cracking at the top of the
facade of the building that houses the city aquarium. Some of the paving
stones looked a little lumpy in one place but that could have been caused by
food vendors parking heavy stuff on them. Other than that, nothing. The
cathedral showed no evidence of damage that I could see. Same goes for the old
post office building. All the recent strengthening work will have saved many
of our historic buildings.

There are still a few streets blocked so I couldn't see much there, and I know
a couple of buildings are being demolished, but I really struggled to find much
in the way of obvious damage. I didn't see any red placards (which says a
building is off-limits).

I haven't downloaded the pics from the camera yet but I'll have a look and put
a couple up later.

Having said that, a couple of suburbs have been hit hard, and so has the town
of Kaiapoi. They were affected pretty badly by liquefaction and a lot of
houses are being condemned after their foundations have been compromised. Some
areas will need their sewer system totally rebuilt and the residents will be
stuck with portaloos for a while yet.

One thing that I learned is that it is good to have a contact number that is
out of the local region. During an emergency, nobody can dial into any local
numbers, but it's easy to call someone out of the area. So have a relative,
or close friend who lives at least a few hundred klicks, or miles away that
you can have people call in case of an emergency (quake, flood etc.) in your
 area.

I didn't think of that, it makes sense as the local exchanges would be
overloaded and calling a local number would tie up two connections. Both our
fathers live out of town so we should be OK. Note the telephone service
suffered no interruptions for us. The cell networks were borderline and they
were asking people to send text messages instead of making voice calls whenever
possible. The power outages caused some cellphone sites to cut out when their
backup batteries ran out, but we didn't notice any problems. I still find it
utterly amazing how well our city withstood this disaster.

It certainly won't be causing our incumbent mayor any problems in the upcoming
local-body elections. He's going to romp in. He has been absolutely
outstanding in his response and his communication handling of the media
throughout.

Cheers,
Dave

It was a treat! It didn't seem too long to me. The theater was filled
with a elderly mother and her daughter, and ME!
I got there early and chose the center handicapped seat with empty
spaces on either side. Small popcorn (about a half gallon) and a small
diet coke (about 50 ounces, 35 of which were ice chunks). The ladies
came in just before the start, and of course, sat in the row in front
of me… right in front of me. But the rake of the seating kept their
heads well below my line of vision.

My only critical marks against the film was that the expansive
scenery, and especially items moving by in the very foreground, drew
my eyes, at times my attention, away from the action. Plus I find the
3D effect not as smooth in transition foreground to background. Though
it is 1000% better than it used to be.

As almost all the movies I've seen in the past ten years have been
either at home via Netflix, Cable TV, or my iMac, I found myself
looking for the remote to rewind a bit at least a dozen times. Very
frustrating not being able to see that again.

I am not ambivalent, I'm insulted. And the marketing blurb says fast
f/2.4 aperture. That's like a car dealer trying to sell you a fast

 My thoughts here:

The f2.4 aperture isn't so strange, if you go back to the earlier days of
Pentax lenses.  There was, an Auto Takumar 35mm f2.4, at one point.  I
wonder if they've just dusted off the old optical formula and put it in a
plastic body...  Naa, they wouldn't it would have to be a new design.

not necessarily, if they omit the long throw portion of the focus

Right, each of us would have their own specific desire for a specific
lens (e.g. what you said or that rumored Tokina 16.5-1x5) or a specific
camera feature. E.g. that rumor that Pentax will introduce new flashes
and enable 1/250 sync speed created a bit of a stir on PentaxForums.
Evidently some photographers find it very important.

I should also point out that I made a passing comment there that perhaps
Pentax will introduce some kind of wireless image transfer system and so
they did. Though /personally/ I find IR rather deprecated technology for
this kind of things, but go figure.

Finally, everyone has their own specific rhythm or tempo of upgrades of
their cameras. Some, like Paul Stenquist shoot really a lot and have a
chance to upgrade often. Some, like me, got started from *istD, and so
they upgrade every other major upgrade (*istD, K10D, K-7) as opposed to
K20D and K-5 respectively. I can see many people having K10D's and
K20D's and holding up so far, but now upgrading to this new camera like
I did from K10D to K-7. At this moment, I see no reason to upgrade until
any of my camera bodies breaks down. However K10D is not being used as
intensively as it used to be and with just 4 years and 22,000+ exposures
it is still going very strong.

This holiday season I decided we needed to make a number of prints for
Galia and our family album. I should say that images from K10D are just
brilliant. I am printing 13x18 cm (5x7 inches, or something like that).

I sent my initial greeting assuming that everyone (Jewish and gentile)

Bob, It was formed by pyrotechnics on the ground. They were simulating the
attack on Pearl Harbor at an airshow. I couldn't see what they were acturally
doing on the ground but it seemed like buckets of gasoline were being exploded
causing a large fireball to rise up. This ring was formed after the fireball
burned out. It kept spinning up and twisting and this pilot couldn't resist

Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are the Jewish High Holidays. Since they have not

That probably should have been written High Holy Days, as in the vernacular

May I add, your post treatment of #4446 certainly makes for a great improvement.

The first version was a quick job done on my laptop with a TN monitor
(profiled but still unpredictable due to the discrepancies between
viewing angles). The new stuff was converted at home on the good setup
:)

Ecke, for this thing to work there has to be (almost?) accurate eye
contact. Wifi and BT take care of this limitation rather nicely. I am
also unsure as to the connection speed/rate that IR can provide. But it
is all moot until it clears out whether the protocol Pentax indicated is

That is actually an excellent idea. Among other things, it would mean
that the first manufacturer to make it happen will tell the world that
they are absolutely 200% sure of their auto focusing system. I can only
imagine what kind of hmmm waves it would generate on photo forums...

Not quite, but I managed to not fill up my 40G of SD cards, I shot about 2300
frames of digital, and about 160 of film.

I did manage to get quite a few good shots, but I haven't seen any yet that are
what I'd consider excellent. On the bright side, by trying to be conservative
in my shooting, I've got a lot fewer frames to go through than I might
otherwise have.

Most point and shoots don't have focus rings, or an easy method of
manual focus. Look how well that works out. We have so much to look

If it were me I'd double or triple the Walmart price and call it good.
$50 or less is something most parents would find reasonable and it's
not a lot of money for you, but it does compensate you a bit for your

  Hi all,

So, here's my situation.  I ran into an old high school friend who's coaching
several athletic teams.  He's seen some of my photography and asked if I'd be
interested in doing some team photos for them -- soccer and basketball.  I
told him I'd be interested in doing it, but I've never done that sort of
thing before.  He essentially said the main thing the kids' parents are
concerned about is pricing, and feels pretty confident that I'm competent
enough to handle the task based on what he's seen.

Thing is, given my lack of experience, I'm not sure how much to charge these
parents.  I can go through Walmart for the prints, which seem to be pretty
reasonably priced -- the standard sports package being $15.00.  I don't know
if any of you have any experience in this type of work at all, but any
guidance would be much appreciated.  I've never done any sort of professional
work at all, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how much I can fairly charge
these people for my work.  But, I'd like to be able to make a buck or two
someday, if only to subsidize my photography addiction.

Are there any rules of thumb or standard formulas that I could go by, aside
from asking other local photographers what they're charging?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me.

 Best,

 Walt
