No Dave, mine is the same! A bit of sticky tape does the job in stopping it
from falling off.
Great lens otherwise - when travelling in Egypt, I used it for over 70% of
my shots.

The 16-45 is my favorite lens, and it takes about 90% of my shots.

The only problem that I have is that the lens hood retaining tabs have worn
down enough that the hood will fall off if bumped. It's the only lens where
this has happened though, so it may just be a fluke with mine.

Re: OT - Home Theater Advice?

2010-11-22 Thread Boris Liberman

My setup is this, John:

NAD 320 for amplifier
A pair of Mission M71s for speakers
Pioneer 575 for the player.

The sound quality is good (to my ears), the resilience of this system is
outstanding. It has already survived Galia and it is likely to survive
Anat. There was a period of time when Galia would watch movies from
DVD/VCD at least couple of hours every day. So far so good.

I don't fancy modern multi-speaker arrangement, mostly because I rent a
flat and moving such a thing will be major PITA. The simple system such
as this is easy to move and I find it totally satisfactory. Whichever
part breaks down, I am likely to start looking for replacement simply by
finding out what NAD, Mission or Pioneer have to offer in the same
spec/price/market category.

suggestions do you have, based on your experience. I admit I find it

situation.

It really depends on the monetary constraints. What comes to mind that
seemingly wasn't mentioned or mentioned briefly is:

1. Sigma 24-60/2.8 - not as wide, but faster with very good sharpness
and bokeh. Downsize - somewhat different colors and big filters. Beware
of sample variation and back/front focus issues. Mine requires -7 focus
correction with the K-7.

2. DA 16-45/4 - compared directly with your FA 20-35 by photozone. I
don't have one, but whenever I borrowed one from fellow PDMLers it came
out really good.

3. Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 or 17-70/2.8-4.0. I tried the former when Jaume
came to Israel and it was surprisingly good.

4. DA 17-70/4 SDM - successor of DA 16-45 in a sense. SDM is either an
issue or a non-issue for you.

5. Tamron 17-50/2.8 - cheap alternative to DA* 16-50/2.8. But the IQ is
anything but cheap. Actually it is very good judging from what I've seen
from the same lens for Canon mount that my friends have.

6. FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 - wobbly build, good optics. With this one you'd
loose a bit on the wide end but gain seriously on the long end.

For the record, this was the second shot of the series of two :-). And I

I use an A clamp from Home Depot. The big green ones already have a
hole in the handles. Put a 1/4-20 bolt through the hole with a nut
and washer and put your ball head on that. Costs about $2.

It's very similar to a Justin Clamp that costs $25.

I agree. The 16-45 is a very good lens for the money. I shot with it for about
a year before i bought the 16-50 and found it quite capable. You give up a stop
and the build quality isn't on a par with the more expensive lens, but the
image quality is definitely pleasing.

Nothing artistic really, but two streets in Liège, Belgium:

The "Cul-de-sac of the Future" (a private cul-de-sac, as the panel
second photo says) and "Mousehole Street".

Pics taken with pentax equipment, of course. :-)

OK. In a lot of older British towns you may chance upon a street with a name
like Grape Lane. Not funny in itself, but you should know that in days of
yore it was almost certainly where the town prozzers plied their carnal
trade. Streets tended to be named for the trade that took place there, and
in the City of London we still have Ironmongers Row, Poultry, Fish Street,
Cowcross Lane (where the cattle going to Smithfield market crossed the river
Fleet) and so on. Indeed, as you might expect from the greatest metropolis
on earth, we had a whole bunch of Grape Lanes.

The name Grape Lane was changed during more prudish times from its
Anglo-Saxon original. People of a sensitive disposition may wish to refrain

About EVFs and football (soccer) stars

2010-11-22 Thread Jaume Lahuerta
Hi there,
I have finally been able to test a proper Electronic Viewfinder, the Panasonic
Lumix G2's specifically.
Since some of you suggested that this one showed the state of the art in this
field, I visited a well known Spanish department stores that normally show
cameras with charged batteries inside.
I have to admit that I am impressed with the G2 EVF: big, clear, low lag even
in
an artificial light environment...My EVF allergy diminished dramatically in a
few minutes. I also had the chance to compare it side by side to the G10 EVF
(which I had previously tested) and the difference is amazing.

I tried t test the Samsung NX but this one had no batteries.

So...although I am totally sold to the K-5 and its multiple improvements and
starting to save for it...I may wait until spring and see what Pentax has to
say
on EVIL land (as you know I am not too fond on the m4/3 concept as opposed to
'mAPS-C'). With this test I can imagine myself actually using one of these
cameras.

So, what about football?
While I was testing the G2 I suddenly changed the place where I was pointing at
and then my VF was filled (the camera had a telezoom mounted) with a very well
known face. Actually, some people at the store was asking to take a picture
with
him...he was the current world's best football player !!!
Knowing that I live in Barcelona, those of you who know a bit about football
won't have any trouble guessing his name...
;-)

Regards,
Jaume

I'm no audiophile but I like good sound. I have a nice system I put together
almost ten years ago. It has a 550 watt Pioneer 5.1 receiver with four Polk
towers, a Polk center speaker and a Velodyne subwoofer. Watching football I've
sometimes been able to make out the conversations of people "sitting behind
me." Fun stuff. Music is strictly from CDs, and of course I switch it over to
stereo. Sounds good to my uneducated ear. Would love to play with vinyl and a
good turntable just for grins, but I'm through spending.

Mine's pretty simple. Computer and game console and DirecTV receiver
all feed an A/V Receiver. It feeds a 5.1 speaker system and a TV
display. It's really pretty simple but the number of cables can get
overwhelming in some cases.

The DirecTV box (or cable box, I'd suspect) goes into the receiver over
HDMI.

The TV comes out of the receiver over HDMI. I don't use the TV audio,
but it comes out of the receiver on the same HDMI cable.

The computer video goes into the receiver on HDMI, and the audio goes in
on optical, due to limitations in the hardware in the computer.
Theoretically, this should be doable with only the HDMI cable.

The game console goes into the receiver as RCA video plus optical audio.

The CD player goes into the receiver as optical.

The computer has a second video out that goes to a dedicated 23" display
so I can dink with things on the computer while the A/V outputs are on
some other source.

Re: OT - Home Theater Advice?

2010-11-22 Thread Paul Ewins
We've got a relatively new set up - Denon Amp and Polk speakers - and the first
bit of advice is that you absolutely need a centre speaker. We haven't bothered
with rear speakers but without the centre speaker you lose a lot of dialogue.
The same setup is used for audio and the sound quality is fine but the remote
control is poorly set up. To choose the CD input I have to flip the remote
over, open up a panel on the back and press a button there. They are probably
buying the remotes in bulk and then configuring the buttons rather than getting
a remote specially made to suit the unit. Apart from that I am happy with the
amp and speakers.

Re: Stochastic photography

2010-11-22 Thread Walter Gilbert
Thanks for the input! I think I may have come up with the best
option -- a sort of reverse monopod.

A 1/4" bolt through a length of lightweight chain. Run the bolt through
one end of the chain (making sure the link is smaller than the head of
the bolt) -- screw into the camera, step on the other end of the chain
and pull it tight while shooting.

It'll provide a fair amount of stability, and when not being used, can
be carried in a pocket.

I have got some money in a couple of cases and it was a lot of work arguing,

I should go for a "hide", but haven't had the urge to get out there at dawn

Never mind steroids, how about Babe Ruth on Lipitor? He might have
lived much longer! (And with human growth hormone - which can improve
aging eyesight - might have been hitting home runs into his 40's.)

Re: PESO: For Baseball Fans

2010-11-22 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Here is a post I made to another list a while back:

A long time ago, I learned that, if you don't know the answer to a
baseball trivia question, just say "Babe Ruth." There is a surprising
probability you will be correct.

The longest complete game victory in World Series history was Babe
Ruth's 12 inning pitching masterpiece that gave Boston the victory
over Brooklyn in game 2 of the 1916 World series!

How good a pitcher was Ruth? His nine shutouts in 1916 set an AL
record for left-handers which would remain unmatched until Ron Guidry
tied it in 1978. Ruth pitched 29⅔ innings consecutive scoreless
innings in the World Series as a Boston pitcher, a record that would
last until Whitey Ford broke it in 1961. He was clearly one of the
best pitchers of all time, but more valuable to the Yankees as a
slugger.

Dan

It is hard to imagine what Ruth could have done with modern training
methods, or even if he just moderated his heavy smoking, eating and
drinking (even in the dugout). Ruth on steroids? Incredible Hulk,
move over.

Re: My pictures for a music CD cover

Thanks Miserere. Yes, you're absolutely right: mission accomplished, and
that counts above all.

For some reason, I felt like justifying those pics, explaining I've been
asked to make them different from usual stuff. That's been my way to meet
the band requirements and they apparently like the results so much. I had
quite an amusing shooting session, pizza & beer, my name among the credits
and got paid for the work. That's fine indeed!

Sounds like my PC audio set-up, which is a used Denon AVR-900 from

Thanks, Walter. I was just standing there, and they flew over.
Luckily I had my camera's exposure and focus set (I was shooting with
the M200mm f4.0, so it was all manual) so all's I had to do was follow
them for a second and snap. I was bracketing, but it worked out that
the first snap (the best composed one) was acceptably exposed.

Thanks again!

Re: OT - Home Theater Advice?

2010-11-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
My "home theater" audio system is a Denon DRA-435 receiver I picked up
at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store last month for $40 and a Bose
3E satellite speaker system I bought in 1991 for $600. Sound quality
meets my needs for 'audiophile' quality: it works well for listening
to music, watching movies and videos with the Sony flat panel
television and AppleTV or CD/DVD player.

A friend of mine is a true audiophile. He's been collecting the
greatest recordings he can find of his favorite operas, music and
movies for years. But he can't decide on what equipment is the best,
can't afford the expensive stuff, so mostly he just dusts his
collection occasionally and fantasizes how nice it will sound when he
finally decides what equipment to buy.

He was a leftie, and he was a hell of a pitcher! I think he may still
have (or was it only very recently broken?) the record for consecutive
scoreless innings in the World Series. It's just that he was so good
a hitter that they couldn't afford to have him play once every four or
five days.

Hey, it's pretty hard to compare what he did (either as a pitcher or
hitter) to today's game. He usually faced the same pitcher, no matter
how tired or "off" he was, for nine innings. No relievers (unless the
starter's arm had fallen off), no middle relievers, "set up men",
closers. Just one pitcher for the whole game.

Still, what we can do is compare Ruth to his contemporaries, and he
still stands head and shoulders above the rest.

cheers,
frank

Great, I was going to write something like that, even how long I have been
shooting .-) I started photographing 33 years ago when I was young and didn´t
have too much money for film. Now I just hate deleting stupid pictures so the
effect is the same.

I usually start by walk around or looking at the subject, trying to find out
what caught my interest, visualizing how the picture could be, and then start
photographing. Even then I tend to take few pictures, sometimes only one. No
tripod, even when using large format, because it removes the flexibility and
slows down the reactions.

They're both terrific shots, but The Stare is particularly compelling.
I probably shouldn't, but I really like the branch with the dead
leaves in the upper right hand corner. That expressive equine face is
amazing!

Re: PESO: Drowned Church

2010-11-22 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Frank. As explained in my response to Ted, I realize it is a
poor scan, and I am hoping to improve on it. Do you have any other
suggestions, assuming I find the negative and and get a good scan of
it?

There's more than just "thoughtful" coming through on this portrait!

;-)

Wonderfully done. The rendering looks fine on this public library
monitor that I'm on now.

Re: PESO: Drowned Church

2010-11-22 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for your comments, Ted.

The reason I posted the image here is because I recognize that this is
a poor scan, and I am in the process of digging out the negative so
that I can re-scan it. In addition to getting a sharper image, I am
hoping that there will be more area around the church so that I can
also re-crop.

That being the case, your thoughts are just what I was looking for,
and they are greatly appreciated.

For some reason, I like this image, despite its faults, probably
because it brings back pleasant memories of the river cruise we took
from Moscow to St Petersburg 12 years ago. I remember the pleasant
evening when I was sitting on deck, watching the rather unremarkable
river banks, when suddenly this ruin came into view. I ran into my
cabin to retrieve my camera, and just barely grabbed this image before
we sailed right past it. It took me quite a while to find out a
little more about this church and its fate.

This is a scan from a 3x5 print, so I am hoping I can improve on the
image quality if -- if -- I can find the negative and it is still in
good shape.

Thanks for commenting.
