Re: OT Ya know you're old when you remember...
I started out cutting grass with an old reel type push mower; $1.50 a pop for 1/4 acre lots, included raking the cuttings trimming around the foundation. That was the summer of 1960 when I was 11 years old. I earned enough that by the end of the summer I was able to invest in a cheap power mower, so the next summer I made a whole lot more money for less effort. My first real job where I worked for someone else came in 1962, when I turned 13 and could get a work permit from county social services. I got a job operating the popcorn machine taking tickets at a local theater on weekends. It was the old fashion kind of kettle machine that all the theaters now try to imitate. The new machines just aren't the same ... automated and pre-measured you can't get the old kind of lard based congealed fat we used because it's bad for your health. But the popcorn just doesn't taste as good as I remember. I had to make myself a little chart just now of school grades, school years and my age at the time to figure out just when those jobs were, and *that* is when you know you're getting old. From: Paul Stenquist My first job was cleaning the kitchen and mopping the floors at Retlaws Diner on 87th and Vernon in Chicago. It was 1959, and I was only 11 years old. I was paid $5 to do the cleanup every Saturday. Took me about 5 hours. I had to wash out all the garbage cans, throw away all the rotten produce and scrape grease off the wall behind the grill. I apparently didn't do a good enough job, because a city health inspector made them hire an adult. But I had saved some of my money, and I used it to buy a newspaper stand in the telephone company building. Sold papers at my stand and between lanes of traffic on Ashland Avenue for several years. When I was old enough to drive, I sold the paper stand, bought a car for fifty bucks, and took to delivering pizzas in the Blackstone and Avalon Park neighborhoods on Chicago's south side. That was good money for a kid. That's what happens with some anti-virus software if you have a file that is identified as something else. In this case a Jpeg that has no extension. Now my anti-virus software scanned it and said no threat, however Firefox 3.6 defaulted to trying to handle it as a HTML When I clicked save to file in Thunderbird it helpfully added the extension .htm. in spite of my specifying that it save it with a .jpg extension. Who remembers transcription disks? Radio shows were distributed to the radio stations on large diameter 78 RPM records. That was the reason for the island turntables in radio studios, to allow overhang of the large disks. They eventually went to phone line networks. Early television was distributed over the phone line. One of my favorite parts of the the PDML is that you do have a place to show your pictures, and that provides a nudge to complete the process and get your shots to the show the world stage. It took a while for me to really take digital photography seriously, as a 'proper' film replacement. I used to go out and take a number of photos of an area or scene that I wanted, look at them on the computer and then go back the following day to take the real ones in slide film with an LX. This year has been the first in 30+ years without a slide show at Christmas. It isn't I've not wanted to take digital on seriously, most of my work has no urgency of immediate result, and I've enjoyed waiting for things to come back from development. However, the world has moved on and with much reluctance, as film processing is joining the list of technology past, I have little choice but to join in. I've certainly found the ability to share photos instantly useful, but more for swapping hints on repairing or doing things - particularly when I was working on the garden recently, rather than aiming for quality photography. This is a trap I've got to get out of this coming year, as the criteria has only been if it shows what it needs to show for the purpose of the query. That doesn't make for stunning picture quality. Christine suggested a K-5 as a back-up camera, which I am now in need of. I think that is the only camera on the short list at present. I have actually used a Kx, but I much prefer the feel of the K-7. This is more research than usually gets done, as the past present DSLRs I've owned, I've seen for the first time when they have arrived by delivery. Lots more PDML mail to catch up onall the best for 2011 folks. Re: OT Mac migration application
Dave, you can run Migration Assistant later on if you like. It's in /Applications/Utilities . PS CS1 should run on your newer Intel Mac OS X, but it will run under emulation (called Rosetta) so it's a bit sluggish. OTOH, your new Mac will fly compared to your older iBook so the net result should be faster PS. If you have Mac OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) installed, you may have to install Rosetta as its an optional component during installation of the OS. It will be found on the OS DVD. -bmw On 10-12-31 8:40 AM, David J Brooks wrote: Paul. -should the iBook be plugged in prior to the iMac start up or does it matter. -Is this a one time thing, or can i do it anytime. -Any idea if PSCS will work on the newest Mac OS's. Re: Pentax 67 resolution compared to 15 MP Digital
There is no fair resolution comparison because the systems are so different. There is chemical information on a larger negative wich cannot be duplicated on digital because it is simply not present. Likewise, digital information takes to enlargement much better than does film (in most instances). A 12MP dslr, APS-C size, will be about 3K DPI. Scan a 6x7cm neg @ 3Kdpi and you will have more information available than there is from the DSLR. Likewise, place the digital information on film via a film recorder and you will have a lower grade image. IOW, while the large film neg has better/more information it is more difficult to manage for enlargement. Now, if you would shoot 8x10 or 11x14 and do a contact print -- then you would be tempted forget digital. There is a reason why a number of pros will shoot reversal and then drum scan for digital manipulation. It makes sense. You can connect them after launching the assistant. When starting the iMac for the first time, it will ask if you want to do the migration, so it's convenient to do it then, but not necessary. I'm not sure if the first PSCS works on Intel-based Macs. Google it and see what you can find. I think I switched to CS4 at the time I bought my iMAc. Re: Pentax 67 resolution compared to 15 MP Digital
There is no sensible, direct translation of film acutance to digital resolution. I have watched people quoting ppi, sensor resolution, etc etc for years. It's all horsepucky. The resolution of film is dependent on many factors: - film speed - how it is exposed - how it is processed ... gamma is critical - how acutance is measured (what criteria is chosen) The resolution of a digital sensor is similarly dependent upon several factors - the size of the sensor - the {x,y} photosite dimensions - the strength of the antialiasing filter - how it is exposed - how it is processed - how acutance is measured All of that is important even before you think about lens qualities, scanning the film, etc etc. But that doesn't stop me from making an assessment based on my experience using specific cameras and lenses. I shot film for 45 years and have been working with digital capture and processing since 1984. When the first 5Mpixel digital cameras with good lenses appeared at an affordable price in 2002, I bought one and found that it totally eclipsed the capabilities of 35mm film cameras for my usual print sizes up to 11x14. I went to Medium Format film (645, 6x6, 6x9 cm) for larger prints. When I bought my first 6 Mpixel DSLR and top of the line lenses in 2003, I realized in short order that there was no longer any point to shooting Medium Format film for the print sizes I make (typically up to 16x20 inches). So for me, digital capture and processing outperforms Medium Format film and processing at the 6 Mpixel, professional quality camera and lenses point. Everything beyond that is a plus on the digital side, and the handling and management of digital capture images is far far far more convenient and flexible. Others will disagree with me and quote a bazillion silly numbers. But don't bother, please. This is an ancient debate and I'm not going to pursue it. I know what works for me. FWIW: I'd still like a Bronica RF645 camera with wide and normal lenses. A beautiful piece of equipment, always wanted to work with one. Re: OT Mac migration application
1- leave the older system unplugged until asked to do so. 2- you can do it at any time, the Migration Assistant is always available to use. 3- you have options for exactly what you can migrate I *strongly* recommend first setting up the new system and installing all your applications fresh from the original distribution media. Do all the Software Updates, make sure the new system is working perfectly. THEN run the Migration Assistant and migrate all your USER files, NO applications or system additions. This is exactly how I configured my own new system in August 2010* and exactly how I have set up new systems for about three dozen clients in the past couple of years. It is an efficient and robust methodology to configuring a new Apple system. I have had to do zero support on all those installations, they all worked flawlessly from the moment I handed them back to the clients. Godfrey * with one additional step: I used SuperDuper to clone my working startup drive first and ran the Migration Assistant using the clone. That completely eliminates all possibility of anything during the installation process losing data on the old system. Re: Pentax 67 resolution compared to 15 MP Digital
Godfrey, Along the same lines as your commentary... I've loved 35mm slides and projected images since I first got to borrow my dad's Retina IIIc. The acutance in a 35mm Kodachrome image is just wonderful. As a consumer, early digital could make acceptable 4x6 prints. But the last couple of cameras from Pentax (K-5 7) are good enough to rival those projected Kodachromes. And my results are better. As for comparison to 6x7, look at transparency film on a light table with a big loop. It will take your breath away, and a 15 meg digital file will never compare to it. I won't be shooting much medium format film, but it still has real IQ advantages. Regards, Bob S. Thanks, Liz! I first say him perched in a tree behind a few small branches. I tried a few shots through the passenger window, then got out and placed a bean bag on the hood for a couple. He was probably 100 yds away and there was a trail leading in his direction, but as I stepped around the rig he immediately flew. As he took off, he did a wing over showing me his back with both wings straight out. The sun lit him up and he was at his closest point from me. I DIDN'T GET ON HIM SOON ENOUGH..eeehhh!!! He then landed in another tree about 150 yds away, hesitated for a moment and took off, offering me this view..among many others. I kept shooting 'til he was a tiny black dot. Godfrey I ended up doing it as Godfrey described as well. I tried migrating applications first, and many didn't work. I ended up erasing the hard drive and starting over. It all works perfectly now. Paul * with one additional step: I used SuperDuper to clone my working startup drive first and ran the Migration Assistant using the clone. That completely eliminates all possibility of anything during the installation process losing data on the old system. My friend tells me to hook up at start up of the iMac but what I see on the Apple site it does not suggest that. I know i need a firewire adaptor from 400 to 800 but what are the thoughts on migration. I don't want to screw this up. Hopefully programs like PSCS1 and Toast 6 will run on the new OS. Re: Pentax 67 resolution compared to 15 MP Digital
I am with Collin here. It is really a question without an answer. I mean - it just depends. If you have a drum scanner nearby with highly trained operator, then you can produce amazing amount of information and tremendous enlargements from your 6x7 negative. For the references, several years ago to scan one 35 mm frame on a drum scanner in Tel Aviv was USD 25. And they clearly indicated that they will not assume any responsibility if the film gets damaged in the process. OTOH, if you have 16 MP K-5 and all these fancy tools (fractal upressing, etc), you can probably get very far as well. Finally, it would also depend on a specific picture. Boris On 12/31/2010 5:17 PM, Collin Brendemuehl wrote: There is no fair resolution comparison because the systems are so different.
