Dust on K-r sensor

2011-01-16 Thread Larry Colen
Has anyone noticed the K-r being a bit more dust sensitive than other cameras?
I don't think I've been any less careful about dust with the K-r I'm testing
for (and about to ship to) Luiz, but at the end of the day, I'm seeing a lot
more dust on the sensor.
Part of that may have been due to not having the shake off on power up
activated until this afternoon, but one thing that is weird about it is that
I've seen dust (or small threads) move around on the sensor from shot to shot.
I've never noticed that on other cameras, but that seems fairly common on the
K-r.

The one occasion when we hit rush hour we got onto the third train as the first

Facebook is central planning. Like central planning in an economy it
benefits the planners not the planned, though the latter don't seem to
realize that. (Now that I've mangled the English language a bit, I'll
shut up about it).

Flickr YouTube aren't really social media IMO, because there's no interaction
to speak of. It's the connections and interaction of true social media that can be
put to work for you if your livelihood is dependent on promoting yourself or your
brand.

Linked-In is social media for serious business, but it doesn't have the viral
penetration power of facebook.

I find Twitter very valuable for getting leads on breaking auto news. I
frequently turn those leads into assignments and dollars. I follow a large
number of auto writers, car companies, and car company execs. I generally avoid
using it for entertainment or interaction with friends.

In addition to being a good promotional tool, Facebook is a good photo
resource. Pentax posts there regularly (that's where the Carlson interview came
from), as do a number of other manufacturers and photo-related companies. Some
PDML members, including Doug, Albano, Lassie and others, post more photos on
Facebook than here.

I think Facebook and Twitter both have some negative baggage, so I was
reluctant to get involved, but I'm definitely glad that i did.

I apologize. I did not mean to attack your dreams.

It's like I don't want one, so you can't have one!

No, most certainly it's not. It's like I used to want one, paid money for
one and now I can see I can do without one. So may be you can learn from my
 mistakes and benefit from that.

Why not instead, Oh yeah? Well, what I'd really like is to have ...

I know what I'd like to have, but I also know that I am not going to be
 getting it any time soon.

It's my *dream*. It doesn't have to make sense to you or to anyone else.

If you say something to someone, it has to make sense to them, otherwise it
 won't be a dialog.

What is *important* depends on who's defining important. What is
important to you may not be important to me ... and vice versa.

 Sure.

I'll point out again, I don't expect to ever see the lens actually
produced by Pentax - although I think they'd probably sell a boat load
if they did. That doesn't keep me from thinking how useful it could be
for me if I had one. Nor should it. Nor should anyone tell me I'm wrong
 for thinking that.

 Yes.

And I understand Pentax is never going to offer a full frame 24x36
DSLR. I know. Ain't never gonna happen ...

This is most unfortunate. I share the sentiment with you, even you think I
 don't.

Unless, of course, they decide there's demand enough that it IS in their
interest to offer one. And I expect the nay-sayers to be the first to
pontificate on how inevitable it was that Pentax should do so and how
marvelous an offering it actually is.

The demand generated by the market depends on specific social slice targeted
by the company. It seems Pentax is not including you or me in that social
 slice.

I don't know. Just seems like some people can't be happy unless they're
preventing anyone else from being happy; like there's not enough
happiness in the world to allow anyone but them to have any.

Like I said in the beginning - I apologize as I did not intend to attack you
 in any way.

Sadly these seem to go for no more than a K1000. Happily due to student
demand that cab be upwards of $200.00

ME super - medium amount of visible use

You might get $50-60 for it.

MX - much visible use but fully functional

Half to three quarters of the Better one. If it's functional. Most
people judge by looks.

K1000 - used very little

Probably $200 plus in a College town.

lenses:
smc-m 50/2 - slight wear, no dings or scratches

$20 or throw it in with one of the bodies.

panagor automacro converter - next to no visible use

No clue but not much probably.$20.00.

tokina rmc 25-50/4 - good shape, little wear

I really have no idea on this one. But I doubt it would fetch much more
than $100, and I'm only guessing that because it's a fixed aperture and
a fairly wide minimum focal length.

komura teleconverter Telemore 95 II - hardly used

I assume K mount, I've never seen one in K. This was a much sought
after teleconverter, having a very good reputation for producing good
images when coupled with a good lens. They were very expensive when
new. Now I doubt you'll get much more than you would for some cheap
crap TC, at most $20-30. I'd try for if I were the seller, but I'd be
really happy if I were the buyer.

Those Fuji lenses are supposed to be very good but screw mounts are a

No reflection on the others, but the first one, the landscape with the fog or
haze beyond the hills, is magical. More like a painting than a photograph. But
I like most of your landscapes.

still submit a picture for the book with a hope to getting it included?

I would have interpreted that as On or before Dec 31 ... You were
subscribed for most of 2010 weren't you?

I don't think you were gone for more than a couple of months.

It's not my decision to make, but that's my opinion.

found whilst reading a D7000 review

2011-01-16 Thread David J Brooks
Mike Johnson had a link ot his buddy's review of the Nikon D7000,
Gordon Lewis of Shutterfinger, and I found these two paragraphs
interesting and also my point of view as well, as a two system
shooter.

[quote]
Final Ruminations
Some might wonder why I would buy a Nikon D7000 if I already have a
Pentax K-7 with several DA lenses. The answer is that I’m not a brand
fanatic. I use whatever tools I like and have available to get the job
done. Different jobs often require different cameras. I suspect I’m
not alone in this regard.

As one example, Pentax’s flash system is not as well-designed and
sophisticated as those from Canon and Nikon. The Pentax AF-540FGZ
struggles in situations where comparable Canon or Nikon flash units
produce consistent accurate exposures and color balance. When I’m
covering a wedding or an event I need a flash system that makes the
job easier, not more difficult. The Pentax flash system isn’t quite
there yet.

I also have an occasional need for lenses or specialized accessories
that are readily available to rent for Canon or Nikon but hard to find
for Pentax. In this respect the D7000 is more of a replacement for my
Canon EOS 30D than a replacement for the Pentax K-7. The K-7 is still
my camera of choice when I’m travelling and want to be able to carry a
variety of excellent lenses in minimal space. The D7000 also can’t
compete with the fact that any lens I use on the K-7 is
image-stabilized. Being able to use a 55mm f/1.4 in low light with
shake-reduction is a wonderful thing.

Re: Sony A850 vs Pentax K-7 or Boris examines lots of photos

2011-01-16 Thread P. J. Alling
Well, you are at a disadvantage being in Israel and all. I'm less than
200 miles from BH photo. When the K-7 was beginning to ship BH
dropped the price of the K20D to $629.00. With free shipping I had it
in one day, and since I'm not in NY no NY State, City or County sales
tax. Keh.com has a Bargain, (which probably means it looks brand new
based on their usual standards), K10D for $275.and a K-7 in EX+ for
$725.00, now I haven't looked at the current

http://www.keh.com/Camera/format-Digital/system-Pentax-Digital/category-Camera-Bodies?s=1bcode=DPccode=2cc=79277r=WGf

I don't know if that link will work just go to their main page and
navigate to Pentax Digital camera bodies.

Adorama in NY, has the K-7 for about $860, but Pentax USA still
considers it a current product, and I bet Pentax USA still has a bunch
in stock.

I wish I had a better option for you, maybe if you moved to New Hampshire...

K-7 - USD 1300

Following your logic, I am going to have to wait until K-(-3) comes
out (yes, it is key minus three) to get my K-5 for USD 600 although
just as well it might never happen all together.

The last time I inquired with the local distributor, K-5 was USD 1750.
If (and mind you, it is a big if) its price goes down to the same
figure I paid for K-7, it will be USD 1600 at current exchange rate,
which, I should say is like 10% price reduction that is not very
likely to happen anyway.

Your reasoning is only applicable to the place where you live, which

Re: New Auto 110?

2011-01-16 Thread P. J. Alling
But that's just the point of the K mount and the 624 mount cameras.
They play to an existing user base with a boat load, (relatively
speaking in the case of the 645D), of used lenses available. A bigger
camera, (and in the case of the 645D I don't think it's any bigger
really) is not so much of a problem in when you're working with an
installed user base, with all of those yummy legacy lenses. The Auto
110 had what 5 primes, 2 zooms and 1 third party teleconverter. If it
goes with the m4:3 standard then the those lenses won't work without an
adapter anyway, if they use their own standard, I bet the lenses would
cover APS-C, given it's high ISO noise advantage why not just go with an
APS-C camera body...

Hey wait a moment. Doesn't Pentax already have a camera system using an
APS-C sensor and a legacy lens mount?

On 1/15/2011 8:06 AM, John Sessoms wrote:
They could do a new Auto110D and give it the same treatment they had
to use on the *ist-D. It looks like the old Auto110. It evokes the
feel of the old Auto110. It can use the old Auto110 lenses, but it's
just a little bit bigger so they can cram the necessary electronics in
there.

That's all just engineering. Having stated the problem is half-way to
solving it.

The real question is whether there's a market for it? If Pentax could
see the kind of market demand the 645D is generating, the Auto110D
would be a viable product.

It's a clever idea, but is it a clever enough idea for Pentax to be
able to make money out of it? I don't think it is, but I won't mind if
I'm proved wrong again. I'd like to have one myself.

No they can't. Look at a *ist-D compared to an MX or even a MZ
series camera, notice how thick the body is front to back, there's
a lot space required for the sensor and electronics that a roll of
film doesn't need. There wouldn't be room in a classic Auto 110
body. Nor is there any space for the battery, you'd need to have
the /motor/ /drive/ mounted at all times.

It's a poster I think is for the French release of Wild Orchids, which
doesn't seem to have been Wild Orchids in French. The French title
appears to have been Terre de Volupté.

Babel Fish translates Terre de Volupté as Ground of Pleasure [Land of

The movie poster is more famous than the movie itself. That's how I
found the film title.

The only thing I would look at to improve your photos is on the right

Re: Dust on K-r sensor

more dust on the sensor.
Part of that may have been due to not having the shake off on power up
activated until this afternoon, but one thing that is weird about it is that
I've seen dust (or small threads) move around on the sensor from shot to shot.
I've never noticed that on other cameras, but that seems fairly common on the

Re: Need some help finding a camera for a wheel chair user

2011-01-16 Thread John Sessoms

From: Tim ?sleby

Thanks for the creative solution. I'll introduce the idea to him next
time he comes in.

One solution we discussed was to find a camera that could be triggered
by air pressure from a ball under his arm. Any cameras around that
could be used this way?

Any camera that has a socket for a standard cable release should work.
The new Fuji x100 perhaps, and I think some Nikon cameras (DSLRs - don't
know about their point 'n shoot cameras) still had the socket.

Something that might work is an adapter that straps around the camera
and fits over the shutter release button.

Re: New Auto 110?

2011-01-16 Thread P. J. Alling
Then don't try to resurrect the Auto 110. It won't be small. Pentax
will come out with it's own EVF camera in due course if they think
they'll make money at it. If they want to make money with it they
should either make the lenses electronically compatible with the KA
standard and supply an adapter that allows K mount lenses to be used
with at least 90% of the functionality maintained, or go with m43. An
Auto 110D does none of those things.

But that's just the point of the K mount and the 624 mount cameras. They
play to an existing user base with a boat load, (relatively speaking in the
case of the 645D), of used lenses available. A bigger camera, (and in the
case of the 645D I don't think it's any bigger really) is not so much of a
problem in when you're working with an installed user base, with all of
those yummy legacy lenses. The Auto 110 had what 5 primes, 2 zooms and 1
third party teleconverter. If it goes with the m4:3 standard then the those
lenses won't work without an adapter anyway, if they use their own standard,
I bet the lenses would cover APS-C, given it's high ISO noise advantage why
not just go with an APS-C camera body...

Hey wait a moment. Doesn't Pentax already have a camera system using an
APS-C sensor and a legacy lens mount?

On 1/15/2011 8:06 AM, John Sessoms wrote:

They could do a new Auto110D and give it the same treatment they had to
use on the *ist-D. It looks like the old Auto110. It evokes the feel of the
old Auto110. It can use the old Auto110 lenses, but it's just a little bit
bigger so they can cram the necessary electronics in there.

That's all just engineering. Having stated the problem is half-way to
solving it.

The real question is whether there's a market for it? If Pentax could see
the kind of market demand the 645D is generating, the Auto110D would be a
viable product.

It's a clever idea, but is it a clever enough idea for Pentax to be able
to make money out of it? I don't think it is, but I won't mind if I'm proved
wrong again. I'd like to have one myself.

From: P. J. Alling

Naah... too clever for Pentax, I don't believe it's going to happen.
After all, just read all those other silly K-rumors, none of which
