That's just part of the rendering process. It's no more excessive than a crop IMO. This is the digital age, and digital tools are and should be used to enhance a photograph. Ansel Adams used extensive and complex procedures in his darkroom to achieve the look he wanted. A look that often didn't match the subject in every way. You should be able to use the tools at your disposal. I would guess that at least 30% of the photos in the Petnax Gallery have been digitally modified in some minor way. Re: Film is dead?
Nice. The Summilux 50/1.4 gets good reviews; the Summicron 35/2 is a classic. And, as I'm sure you know, both of those Contax bodies are wonderful cameras. I believe there's some debate in regard tow which is superior -- the II or IIA, but both are superb. I think the II was a prewar design, while the IIA was produced after the war when Contax was split into two companies. Page does NOT indicate the user name must be in the form of an email address. If the user name must be an email address, the page should TELL the registrant to use an email address, instead of creating an error condition. I wrote them that the instructions for creating the account should tell the prospective customer the "username" has to be an email address so they wouldn't try to create an invalid "username" and get an error message when they clicked "submit". Their response: we made this error message in order to inform customers that they will not be able to create a non-email format username Well, DUH! Why not "inform the customer" *BEFORE* they create their username. Then they won't get the error message. It's an on-line front end for a database. If the field requires special formatting that is not patently obvious (like, for instance, "username" MUST be an email address), the instructions should tell the person filling in the form what to put into that field, you know, like a ... email address. If you tell 'em up front it has to be an email address, 99-44/100% of the "customers" will never see the error message. I mean, what is Oracle Corporation's forte? Database management, right? Re: Now - about the Pentax Users Gallery... some questions for you who are in it
Legally, you don't need a written release to publish a photo in a gallery. That being said I believe I only have one portrait in the gallery, and I have a release for that. (I haven't even glanced at the gallery for years, although I intend to submit some newer pics when I have time.) If I remember right, when you click the box for a scanned image, it takes you to a different place, and the info they want is self evident. I do have some of the gallery pics on my own page. RE: Film is dead?
From: John Graves I have a few questions for the group though. If I dump the Microdol into the town's septic system, will the Treatment Plant blow up or otherwise stop functioning. Is there a good way to clean out the plastic and glass (fixer) bottles or should I add to my collection? Have I lost what's left of my mind. Do I shoot the 15? year old Plus-X at 125, 64 32 speed? PS my LunaPro still works...I will need a source for the PX625a cells though. All suggestions read..some taken! In no particular order - from my days running a mini-lab and my experience in school ... I wouldn't dump used developer into a septic system. Sewer system is a different matter. If you're connected to a waste-water treatment plant, it should be safe to dump diluted developer in small quantities. I'm assuming you're talking about a gallon or so, rather than hundreds of gallons. If it were me, I'd add it a quart or so of developer at a time to the toilet and flush it. If you've got a 1 gal/flush toilet that's diluted about 3:1. What is a problem is used FIXER. You should take that to someone who can safely recover the silver. Definitely do not put used fixer into a septic system. You stand a good chance of killing the bacteria and having a big bill for getting it pumped out and balanced again. Any local mini-lab should be able to run your used fixer through their silver recovery system. It's just a matter of pouring it into the correct tank before running it through the exchanger. The problem is going to be finding a mini-lab with an operator who knows what he's doing rather than just running along on rote. See if your county has a household hazardous waste collection. I'd shoot the Plus-X at 125, but not use it for anything critical. Use it for stuff you can either live without, or for stuff you can go back to shoot again with a new roll of Plus-X if it doesn't turn out. I prefer HC110 for Plus-X, and D-76 for Tri-X & T-max. YMMV. For 1.5v PX625A cells - I'd try Radio Shack first; "camera department" at Target or Walmart if Radio Shack doesn't have them; or find a Ritz Camera if all else fails. Amazon has them New (Duracell) for $5.26 each and Used from $0.75 each. That's what it says. If they're the old mercury cells, Amazon also lists a Wein PX625/PX13 1.35v Mercury-Free Replacement. They're actually cheaper than the 1.5v Duracells. - No virus found in this message. Your input is needed: title for a funny photo
Hi All, It's hard to resist to look at the photos I've taken over the last two weekends, but it happens... Due to being busy with work, I didn't even load the photos into the LR yet (just starting). Shooting at the "Lone Star Championships" (lindy hop/blues/charleston/ dance event, http://www.lonestarchampionships.com/ ) last weekend I took this shot: http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2011/_IR25429.jpg I need PDMLers' help. Re: Film is dead?
Paul, I have already discovered the Leica snick. Lenses. The Cannon is a 200 mm Telyt which must be used with the Visoflex viewer/mirror assembly. It took me a while to figure out how to put that assembly together. The camera came with a 50mm f1.4 Summilux, 35mm f2.0 Summicron, and 135mm f4 Tele-Elmar. There is also 65mm that mounts to the Visofflex but I haven't figured out what or why it is. Thanks... Dad. I am hoping that my last 2 rolls of Kodachrome that I put through the Leica made it in time for processing. I have both a Contax II and a IIA. The II has a more fragile shutter from what I understand and the shutter on the IIa doesn't have the fabric bands and the curtain is aluminum. So now I don't think I ever will have to go out looking for cameras. I just have to revert back to B&W HI. John Graves WA1JG jh.gra...@verizon.net Paul Stenquist wrote: I'm jealous! RE: Lens rear caps - Pentax vs. non-Pentax (Question)
From: Igor Roshchin The rear lens cups for Pentax and Tokina lenses are made so that can be attached in all three angular orientations (corresponding to the three tabs). I have a Tamron lens (70-300) that has a cap that is "polarized", and can only be attached in one position. Just recently I discovered that several Sigma lenses come with the same sort of rear caps. So, the question is why do they "polarize" the cap? It makes it so much more inconvenient to put the cap on with one hand... Any insights? With the Sigma lenses it's because Sigma uses a K-mount bayonet that's rotated 120 deg for their own lens mount. I don't know why the "polarized" rear lens cap matters, because standard Pentax rear lens caps fit Pentax mount Sigma lenses. But, I don't know if Pentax rear caps would fit Sigma mount lenses, because I don't have any Sigma mount lenses. Do the polarized Tamron caps indicate another position for another brand's mount? I've got one Tamron lens, so I've probably got a Tamron rear lens cap around somewhere, but I expect it's relegated to my junk drawer back in Raleigh. I'm trying to replace all my rear lens caps with a specific Pentax rear lens cap. Pentax made a rear lens cap that looks like a hat with a brim and those are the best fitting rear lens caps I've ever found for Pentax K-mount lenses, whoever the manufacturer is. http://preview.tinyurl.com/4m8ulxb They don't seem to jar loose like other rear lens caps do. Only problem is it's kind of expensive to replace all of your rear lens caps with the good ones and I haven't quite managed to afford it yet. It's another one of those things I always look for whenever I find a still operating independent camera store - do they have old Pentax rear lens caps stashed away? I've been able to get them 3 for $10 that way instead of paying $11.00 apiece for them. - No virus found in this message. It's a shame Vivian Maier's photography wasn't discovered and appreciated while she was alive. (On the other hand, at least she isn't waiting for her framed prints to be returned months after her Chicago exhibit!) It seems like the reason she wasn't discovered & appreciated while she was alive is because she wanted to keep her photos to herself. Thanks, ann When you open a PEF file for the first time in Elements 5.0 does it first open it in Adobe Camera Raw? There's a way to do batch saves from Camera Raw, and JPEG is one of the supported formats. You should be able to select all of the PEF files in a directory and tell Windoze to "Open with Elements" or "Open with Adobe Camera Raw" and have Camera Raw open all of those PEF files. With the PEF files open in Camera Raw, you "select all" and select "Save Images" (should be down on the lower left IIRC) and it will bring up a menu where you can tell it how and where to save them. It allows you to set the quality level of the JPEGs up to 10 Maximum. You can do batch renaming at this point as well or keep the same file names with the new extension. The default is to keep the same file name. Leaves the original file intact. - No virus found in this message. Re: bulk extracting jpgs from PEF's ?
The Pentax software can do this also, but not in all versions. I have version 4.0 installed, where it works as follows: In the Browser, select the PEFs you want to export, then go to the File menu and click "process Multiple Files". This will bring up a dialogue box where you can select a lot of stuff. Make sure you look at the JPEG file settings at the bottom. Just launch the process by clicking "Save", and you're done. Almost. If you do a lot of files, prepare a cup of tea and enjoy it before checking. :-) Jostein 2011/1/17 Ann Sanfedele : > > My preferred work flow has been (and Id like to continue) loading the RAW > files to a folder named for the shooting date, > extracting jpgs which I save in the same folder. RE: Brisbane Floods
Thanks, Tan. That's a great set of images. I've sent the link on to several friends. There's a mark on the cap to indicate where you should line up the cap for each mount, so they will only attach in the one location (unless you modify the cap by cutting off some of the plastic tabs). Maybe the Tamron caps are also designed for two different mounts.
