Re: GESO - My Svalbard images

2011-03-28 Thread AlunFoto
Glad you like it, Ann! :-)
The night shot of the mine on the hillside may have been altered, I'm
not sure. I did the editing on the laptop, and tweaked it back and
forth after posting the PESO. This publishing was done from my desktop
PC, after transferring the whole bundle of shots from the laptop. I
quickly lose track of my versioning with those operations.

To be on assignment to do shoot stuff like that wouldn't bother me
much. But I don't think I'll be working for NatGeo anytime soon, Ann.
:-(

Met a Dutch photographer on assignment up there, btw. He was
commissioned by a travel agency.

Re: GESO - My Svalbard images

2011-03-28 Thread AlunFoto
Even when being there, it's easy to be fooled by the dimensions. Every
feature is further away and every ascent steeper than you expect. :-(

The rifle gal was our guide for the trip. She turned out to be quite a
personality. Enough merits already to deserve a NatGeo article all of
her own. I asked her if she had any big projects this year. She
shrugged and told me she had to work as guide for a couple of years to
save up for the next big one. This year her only plans were to cross
Greenland by ski, along the old Nansen route. She didn't like to talk
much about her personal projects, but I discovered her previous
achievement was to circumnavigate the islands of South Georgia by
kayak in a group of four, last November. :-)

The regular shooting & posting is a challenge, isn't it? :) I found
it very worthwhile in the end, though. There are always times when
there's nothing on that sd card, and no ideas... but pushing through &
coming up with something is its own reward. Usually. Sometimes, it's
just: shoot. post. move on. Lol. At the end of the year, you'll find
that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Thanks, Christine. "Sometimes, it's just: shoot. post. move on." So true
there, Christine. And I'm loling too! It's embarrassing posting a run of
competent shots, then have to post some duds. But that's all part of the
process, and I think PAW is about the process more than
anything--disciplining the self to stay in rhythm as best as time and life
will permit--and staying up to overcome the photographic duds :-).

PAW often tests my commitment to photography. Regrettably, I've blown off
interesting shooting opportunities to indulge in my favorite vices--well,
I'm human and flawed--as I confessed when I first joined the list.

We had quite the little early spring snowfall last week. This wasn't
taken during it.

It was taken about two months ago when I was doing the transit/walking
courier thing during my injury recuperation.

Unfortunately, two things are ~not~ obvious from this photo:

1. It was snowing at the time, and,
2. The streetcar (tram) from which it was taken was moving at the time.

Still, I caught what I was trying to, and turned out pretty much as
I'd hoped it would:

It loaded slowly on my cable link, but it came up. The street art is great, but
IMO, photos of great street art aren't great photos. They're somewhat akin to a
xerox copy of a great photo or other work of art. They're just copies.

It's not an image; it's a series of Unicode graphic character glyphs.
The pdml list doesn't allow image attachments (or any attachments at
all), but it will accept text in any character-set, like legacy ASCII,
ISO-8859-x and even Unicode. So if you select UTF-8 as your character
encoding you can insert all kinds of kewl shtuff, like Braille ⠇⠮⡟⢏,
❝ornaments❞ ❤〖 〗 𝄞 © ❒ ✈, and geometric shapes: ▁▂▃▄▅▆▇█ .

We had quite the little early spring snowfall last week. This wasn't taken
during it.

It was taken about two months ago when I was doing the transit/walking
courier thing during my injury recuperation.

Unfortunately, two things are ~not~ obvious from this photo:

1. It was snowing at the time, and,
2. The streetcar (tram) from which it was taken was moving at the time.

Still, I caught what I was trying to, and turned out pretty much as I'd
hoped it would:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Unfortunately, two things are ~not~ obvious from this photo:

1. It was snowing at the time, and,
2. The streetcar (tram) from which it was taken was moving at the time.

Still, I caught what I was trying to, and turned out pretty much as

built in Germany originally, re-fitted in Nederland as a 2 masted

Keeping track of battery life

2011-03-28 Thread Larry Colen
I'm mildly curious about how many photos I can get with a charge of the
battery, and have decided that the easiest way to keep track is that when I
change batteries, I take a picture of the one I just took out. I'll then put
all of those pictures in a set and look at the file numbers.

I figured that I'd mention this in case anyone else wants to try it also, that
way we might get some real world data on Pentax battery life.

Re: PESO - The Pedestrian

2011-03-28 Thread Rick Womer
I like it. You got the pedestrian at the perfect point in his stride, and the
composition is very effective with the passenger on the right.

If it was Philadelphia with that much snow, the pedestrian would have been
moving faster than the tram. How about in Toronto?

Cheers,

Rick

PESO - The Pedestrian

2011-03-28 Thread frank theriault
We had quite the little early spring snowfall last week. This wasn't
taken during it.

It was taken about two months ago when I was doing the transit/walking
courier thing during my injury recuperation.

Unfortunately, two things are ~not~ obvious from this photo:

1. It was snowing at the time, and,
2. The streetcar (tram) from which it was taken was moving at the time.

Still, I caught what I was trying to, and turned out pretty much as
I'd hoped it would:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

I took that to mean that the slide has to be in place before the film is

If you submit an image, you're in. (If you submit more than one, the
editors select which one is published.)

I had the same apprehension you express, until I saw the first volume.
The books are far better than they have any right to be.

Everyone who submitted gets at least one picture added to the book.
Extras are at the discretion of Mark.

It's an annual, not a competition.

I would hope that a submission does not automatically equal an
acceptance for inclusion. While we probably all put forward what we
think is/are our best image(s), I'd like to think that the bar is a
*little* higher than that.

I haven't been around as long as most of you (last year was my first
submission/acceptance to the annual) but last year didn't we get a
list of photographers & titles that were accepted, in advance of the
book being ready? Or am I misremembering?

IIRC, there's a link on the submission page that takes you to a list of
the photographers who have successfully uploaded images. I think that
list also includes the names they gave their images.

I don't remember an advance list of which images were selected from
those submissions to actually appear in the book.

It's a surprise, and you're not allowed to peek.

Before you do that, you might want to reset the clock on your system ...

Note the date stamp your system put on your message (Jan 01, 2002).

Given that, it's not too surprising that the security certificates
on all the web sites you visit get flagged as invalid; I very much
doubt if any certificates from 2002 are still around.

And if your browsing security level is set to anything sensible
(pretty much a prerequisite with all the malware sites out there)
you're going to get the sort of behaviour that's giving you grief.

I think I've got the date/time straightened out.

If that was what caused the problem, I probably owe them an apology.
They ain't gonna' get it. I'm sure they've got something else to piss me
off lurking in the wings.

When I read about the "Big Changes at Adobe" - the "updated April 1,
2001" prompted me check my date to verify *I* really did know what day
it was. I noticed the date error then & corrected it.

I hope you all will bear with me if I seem even more curmudgeonly than
usual. I start six weeks of radiation therapy for my cancer tomorrow and
I'm not looking forward to it. I've been dwelling on my own mortality of
late and it has me slightly out of sorts.

Plus, my internship ain't going all that great. Half my week is Friday,
Saturday & Sunday "shooting babies" assembly line style - cranky two
year olds in fact. It rubs off.

"Don't lead 'em as much" doesn't quite work.

On top of that there's a CompUSA outlet store 6 spaces down the mall
from the studio and I'm like an addict in there.

Jostein! wow!
These should be a book...

In context of the entire essay, the one that I had a trouble seeing
(literally) is the least intersting, although I could
see it in this presentation... did you lighten it a bit? Did you show
it first because you doubted it yourself and wanted feedback?

Or was it the first one you worked on...

There are so many here that are stand-outs -
If someone said we are curating a show and Joestein can only submit 10
or 15 photos from this lot, I think I'd pick these...
but not in any order of preference... just in order of appearance in
your portfolio

1, 4, 7,12,14,16,19,21,24,29, 31!! , 33,38,40,43!!,49

Ok thats 16... such gorgeous stuff!

So when are you going to work for National Geographic or something??? I
know, it wouldn't be fun if it was an assignment.
