The normally bustling city was silent. It's quite surreal to see buildings that look OK at first glance but then you see there's something not quite right. One fairly big one I saw is on a slight lean, another couple I noticed looked as if they'd twisted. We saw a number of empty lots and piles of rubble from demolished or collapsed buildings. And as you can see from the photos, there are many more that will need to come down. I'm trying not to get sentimental about it because we have to pick up and move on. Definitely an opportunity. But to be honest I doubt it'll happen. The focus will be on fast and cheap. I'm not sure how it's going to play out though. Rebuilding the CBD is secondary to getting people back into habitable homes, so once the demolitions have finished and the remaining buildings have been made safe, the place is likely to look a bit empty for a while. By the time the CBD is rebuilt, the businesses that were there will have built up a new customer base in the suburbs and another move could be too disruptive. And a lot of people are going to think twice about working in a high-rise again. So new businesses will move in, and I wouldn't be surprised if they focus on building some more inner-city apartments. There is already concern that the recovery authority has been granted way too much power. It's going to be very interesting to say the least. Re: OT Ecke thump!
I've found this to work effectively for me: Everything goes into a single gmail inbox. I apply a filter to any incoming PDML mail which effectively puts it into a folder called, imaginatively, PDML. I use K9 mail on the Android phone and only synchronise Inbox so I only get notifications for stuff I need to see during the day. If I'm suffering from PDML withdrawal during the day, I fire up the mobile web browser client for gmail and look at PDML stuff there. There's another side-effect from not synchronising PDML incoming, and that's that the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer. I was only getting 4-6 hours on my Galaxy S, I now generally get a full day or even more. I'm sure that there are many variations on the theme... K7, A Lenses and PTTL (was Re: What next in an SLR?)
I need to find out more about this, because it doesn't work for me. At least, not with the lens I use. I'll admit it's not your normal A lens, but this set up worked on the MZ-S and the *istD and I'd love to have it work on the K7 (or the next camera upgrade). I have added A contacts to a set of bellows. With the camera set to fully open aperture (f2 in this case), and the lens on the bellows closed down when the prefire happens, the camera calculates the correct exposure and the flash fires correctly - using the *istD and 2 AF360 flashes. The K10D and K7 fire the flash at full output. Both the newer cameras behave as if there is an A lens connected to the camera. The camera recognises the aperture range I set the mount to and I can select the aperture accordingly. It even meters correctly for changes in the aperture set on the camera in P mode. Everything except the flash output. If someone has a simple A lens (maximum of 6 contacts on the lens), a K7 and an AF360 flash can you conduct an experiment to see if you get correct P-TTL exposure out of the setup? That will at least let me know if it's just me or a design issue. I'll have to try high speed sync mode to see if that makes a difference since it works for Paul. Paul 2011/4/18 Leon Altoff leon.alt...@gmail.com: Hi Tim, I've considered this same thing, though Pentax normally do manage to make a nice improvement between models. Personally I've decided to upgrade every second major upgrade - bought a K10D, skipped the K20D, bought the K7, skipped the K5, buy the K3?. I'll admit I'd like the improved low light capability of the K5 over the K7, but as I'm expecting the K3 (for want of a better model number to apply) to be improved I can wait. For a while. If it's not improved then I will probably go out and buy a K5 simply to keep the control layout on the back the same between the K5 and the K7 (because I do use 2 bodies). I'm hanging out for some rumors of what the next model holds, but there is nothing. And I'm watching other's buying K5's. What should they be working on? I don't know. I would like to see them bring back P-TTL flash working on A lenses like the *istD had. I use that. AARGH! MBP v Dell 2410
Several months ago I bought a Dell 2410 monitor to use at home with my MacBook Pro (I use a Dell 2408 with it at work). At home, it was extremely difficult to get the monitor to recognize the computer, and display the desktop. I have no idea which of the dozens of things I tried eventually worked. However, they eventually did. A few months later... the power strip feeding the monitor got turned off, and when I connect the MBP... nothing. The computer knows the monitor is there, but the monitor won't recognize the computer. When I ask the monitor to scan sources it doesn't find anything. When I choose VGA, it says no VGA cable, which is complete bullshit because there it is, plugged in (and re-plugged-in, via an adapter to the Mac's mini display port). Help, please! It worked fine for months, and now won't work at all. Re: PESO: Pysanky
Neither. Empty eggs are difficult to work with properly. They crack easily, and they float instead of sinking in the dye. So the eggs uses are always still full, and fresh, uncooked eggs work best. The dyes that are used are not food coloring dyes, and are not safe for use on eggs to be eaten, so these eggs are not intended to be eaten. The dyes are much stronger than those used to dye normal (or Western) Easter eggs. They are decorated by applying beeswax, with a special stylus, to all the areas NOT to be colored a certain tint, then they are dipped into dye of that color. Then, starting with the lightest color, wax is applied to those areas where th atcolor is NOT to be applied, and the egg is dipped in that dye. The process is then repeated through three to six colors, depending on the design. After the egg dries, the wax is removed, by holding the egg in the flame of a candle or placing it briefly in a warm oven and then wiping off the wax. Finally, the entire egg is coated once or twice in shellac. The eggs are traditionally given as Easter presents to family members or friends, and they are often kept for years or decades. The yolk and white dries out after a few years, after which the egg stabilizes. Believe me, you wouldn't want to eat these eggs! K-5 at a wedding: My two complaints
I shot a wedding in Yosemite National Park yesterday and my K-5 performed admirably. There were two problems I noticed that got on my nerves and may have ruined some pictures. 1. The shot-to-preview time (how long it takes a photo to appear on the screen after it is taken) is painfully long. Granted, these photos are much larger than what I was used to with my K10D (which was pretty quick with the previews), but I really wish Pentax could find some way to speed things up for us chimpers. It is partly because of this delay that my second complaint came about. 2. When shooting indoors with my 540FGZ attached, I had to keep a very close eye on flash exposure in the preview images and constantly dial back the flash output by at least one stop and up to two stops to prevent massive highlight blowout. This bit me in the ass during the cake cutting because I had to be fast, I had to be in close proximity to the table couple, the flash had somehow reset itself to normal output and I couldn't wait for the camera to show me if I was getting the proper exposure. Now, maybe this can be chalked up to Pentax's flash system being not-that-great, or maybe it's just my relative inexperience and lack of foresight, but I wish I had just bumped the ISO way up and shot without flash. Live and learn, I guess. At least I can say with some certainty that those were the only bad shots I took, and I know the bride groom (who are friends) probably won't care that much. It was the second marriage for both of them and the whole thing was pretty casual. PESO: My own little World.
Hi list! Ok... Before I post the link a little intro :D So I wanted to do panoramas (360 ones) but I lack the fisheye lens and the Nodal Ninja to do so. Well for the lens it's not that big deal as the kitlens is almost wide enough :D you just have to make LOADS of pictures and pray for not missing a spot :D But the Nodal Ninja (or any other pano-head) is quite crucial as without that you can't really make 360 panos. As being a DIY guy I knew I can make one and luckily found a very good website on the web for DIY Pano Head, the guy calls it Nodal Samurai (just google it). Inspired by that I've created mine as well and yesterday I made my first test with it. Well... it's not the most precise one, it's not the most good looking one... but it does the job! :D So now next stop is to get a Samyang 8mm fisheye (which I always wanted... and this one seems just a bit better quality than the Peleng and it's still quite cheap). Ok, so long story short. Here's my own little world, made with kitlens and a really cheap solution for panoramic head :D http://www.flickr.com/photos/timbah/5650664057/ Comments are welcomed. I'll probably get miniSynth PRO too. - DropBox works great. - Good Reader for PDF and other things works great too. - Keynote, iMovie, Pages, and Garage Band all work brilliantly. Yeah, I've noticed the K5 is slow to write files. I think to fix it, they are going to need to do what Canon has done and start putting dual processors in, one to work the files, one to work the camera. My friend's 7D, which at 18mp is slightly larger than the K5 is very fast, and I believe it has a dual processor. Pentax flash control has always sucked, so I don't allow it to do anything, I still use a big old Metz 60 CT-2 autoflash, and it gives me stellar results, and is accurate enough that I just shoot, and don't chimp. -- William Robb -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: AARGH! MBP v Dell 2410--solved
Glad you got it to work... FWIW, I have a MBP hooked up to a Dell U3011, and my in-house tech support (and long-suffering hubs) had similar issues getting the pair to play nice. A mini display port to display port adapter did the trick. We also did some fiddling with the default setting for the video card... I don't recall exactly what the issue was, but I think there are two video cards in the MBP, and we had to select the more vigorous one to use with the Dell monitor...? On the other hand, we never tried a musical/rhythmic intervention on it, so maybe that would have worked, too. :) -c On Sun, Apr 24, 2011 at 4:02 PM, Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com wrote: Success came with a combination of Stan's and Steve's suggestions.
