OT: some earthquake insurance stats
We had an update from EQC today and I thought the numbers might be interesting. 12,000 homes have >$100k of damage (EQC covers the first $100k, the rest is handled by private insurance). 8,000 homes are "severely damaged" and may be over >$100k depending on full inspections to be completed out by mid-July. 40,000 homes moderately damaged, full inspection to be completed by mid September 120,000 homes with minor damage, full inspection to be completed by mid December For all the earthquake activity since September they've received 304,768 claims, 119,369 of which are for 22 Feb. I think most households will have one claim for each. The local newspaper has a feature series that's just started which is giving us a bit of info about the 1989 San Francisco earthquake and their experiences of rebuilding. I read the first part on Saturday. Quite interesting, especially some of the advice they were giving. A number of our city councillors are travelling over there and I hope they pay attention. That photo blog gig fell through
I spent several hours on Wednesday evening doing a complete rewrite of my low light dance photography article. His comments and questions had pointed out some basic problems, mostly that I had assumed familiarity with the dance culture, and why you don't use flash at these events. The rewrite actually took a lot more time than writing it the first time. This morning I got an email from him: "Unfortunately, I believe it's time to let you go. This hasn't been working at all and it's taken you way too long to get anything ready for us. It's also taken a ridiculous amount of effort on both our parts. I've never had this many problems getting a piece into shape. I want to thank you for your efforts but unfortunately I don't believe this is a relationship that will work." All in all, I have to agree with him. It certainly wasn't working. A lot of it was working from different sets of unspoken assumptions. The attempt, however, was very enlightening. The business model for his blog seems to be "Look at the shiny! You want the shiny, it'll make you a better photographer. Click here and buy the shiny". I'm as big of a gear slut as any photographer that has walked the planet. I love gear that lets me get pictures that I couldn't get before, or gear that makes it easier, or makes it possible to get better quality photos. I also love solving technical problems and making the gear to do so out of a couple dollars worth of kit from the hardware store. But, I never realized until now, how much more important I feel it is to get the most from your gear than it is to have better gear. Mind you, there are a lot of photos that I can get with my K-5 that were flat out impossible with the K-100, but that just means that I need to use the "push the envelope" techniques in worse and worse light. Unfortunately, writing about how to get more out of the gear you have doesn't sell gear, and selling gear is what makes money. Although, I suspect for the most part, people are going to spend what they spend on toys, and it's just a question of which toys and for what reasons. Even on this list there seems to be no correlation between people saying "Gear is only important in that it doesn't get in the way" and not buying toys. The past few weeks did give me an idea of some fun things to write about, and I need to decide if, and how, I'm going to do so. The only real financial incentive I can see for writing about photography online, is to help sell my services as a photographer. In the meantime, I've got metric buttload of life happening to me right now, and I should get back to work on that. As to the piece I wrote on low light photography, all of the editing was done in wordpress, and I didn't cut and paste what I wrote, and when I asked him if he could send me what I wrote he replied: "Because I worked on it quite a bit, I will not. It's only fair in terms of ethics." He had also asked for a comparison between the DA40 and the DA*16-50. It probably didn't help that my treatment of the comparison was that this is like asking which is faster a Dodge Van or an Austin Healey Sprite, if you're worrying which of these two lenses is faster you need to stop pixel peeping, turn off your computer, go outside and take some photos". -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Traveling time
So... Picking up the story in the middle, a few days ago at dinner with my Moto friends, my friend Louise mentioned that the Red Cross might need her back east. Re: PESO - (Actually GESO) - Djerv
I have to mention this movie: "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" (http://www.metalhistory.com/) made by a nice young Canadian sociology Ph.D. and metal lover. It is a serious discourse on the genre: roots (who was first? Probably Sabbath, but there's room for argument) and subgenres (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres). And in particular there's an extended sequence on Norwegian metal, which is simultaneously horrifying and charming. Serious but doesn't take itself seriously. While we're having fun with metal it's possible some may not know about this semi-famous Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_umlaut and this deep piece which uses it as an illustration of Wikipedia dynamics: http://jonudell.net/udell/gems/umlaut/umlaut.html -Tim On Fri, May 6, 2011 at 11:37 AM, Tim Øsleby wrote: > The norwegian word djern means brave or daring. > > A quite appropriate name for this theatrical metal based power trio. > The singer is quite an act, and norwegian metal music is often closely > connected to viking mythology and such. RE: Ken Henderson lecture about portrait photography
From: Tim ?sleby I'll spend some time watching this. http://www.youtube.com/user/dav1eb#p/u/11/6lsRu90jE88 This is one clip in a series of eight. Anyone who knows where to find this guys work? I got a lot of hits when googling the name, but they just led me to a baseball player. Try entering "Ken Henderson APAGB" as your search term. APAGB apparantly means Affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, so it should eliminate baseball players from the results. Most of the results I got seemed to link back to these same videos, but you might be able to get contact information from the PAGB. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: PESO - Blurry and Busy!
Successful effect, Bulent. Not the type of image on which I would ordinarily comment, but the color and general effect is pleasing. Only distracting spot might be the sharp edged peach colored left center shape. I might soften its edges to take it out of a possible point of interest status. RE: Testing K-r with Infrared.
What kind of modification will you do? Full spectrum or dedicated to IR? And how's the modded K10D serving you? Did you find any difficulties or disadvantages? Internal filters are reducing hotspot if I am correct, but what happens if you have a 1000nm filter on the lens and the 720nm internal filter? Does it still eliminates the hotspot? Sorry for having loads of questions but IR photography is something really interests me :) Unfortunately I only have one K-r and I want to keep the possibility to make normal pictures as well so with that I will go for clear glass filter. But I also have a K10D so that might be a dedicated IR machine as it has no Live View so composition would be only possible with hotshoe mounted Russian Turret Finder for RF cameras :) Cheers, .t On Fri, 2011-05-06 at 23:43 +0300, Krisjanis Linkevics wrote: > > Anyone tried IR photography with the K-5 / K-7 / K-x? > > > > Regards, > > .timber > > Nop, only a 720nm modified K10D. Rick and Bulent. As long as your eyes don't bleed. Mine ears nearly did. I had tinnitus for two days after the festival. Comments welcome. I like the shot Frank. I haven't been at the right place at the right time with swans. Good job. I can't find a definition that supports "busking" as a swan thing, though I don't see why it could not be derived from the early european nautical use for tacking or cruising around. busk 1 |bəsk| verb [ intrans. ] play music or otherwise perform for voluntary donations in the street or in subways : the group began by busking on Philadelphia sidewalks | [as n. ] ( busking) busking was a real means of living. • ( busk it) informal improvise. DERIVATIVES busker noun ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: from obsolete French busquer ‘seek,’ from Italian buscare or Spanish buscar, of Germanicorigin. Originally in nautical use in the sense [cruise about, tack,] the term later meant [go around selling,] hence [go around performing] (mid 19th cent.). I only heard the word used some 8 months ago when a friend brought to my attention the couple playing guitars on the periphery of an outdoor concert near here, telling me she used to busk when she was younger, as she pointed to the sign by the performers "Busking for Love and Money".
