The problem in this case was a huge mobile sign advertising a chicken BBQ. Also, Given the FOV of my lens, I'd be standing in traffic. It is a curiously common response, however. My interest is in the pump and the old machinery. Some want to see the building as well. The problem is that including the building makes the pump a very minor part of the shot. Clearly, this needs to be a mini-gallery. Re: Workflow Quandary
I shoot pef's almost exclusively and import into LR using a card reader. The import is set to convert to DNGs, run an import preset that gets pretty much all the images adjusted close, then back up the PEFs to the hard drive on my server. The HD on my work computer gets backed up to an external drive every moring at 1AM. I can then tweak the images and print, upload to a gallery or revisit them later. -p On Mon, May 30, 2011 at 5:51 PM, Brian Walters supera1...@fastmail.fm wrote: G'day all First - a confession. I know it's a bit Kenny boy-ish - but I shoot mainly JPGs. There. I've said it. I feel unburdened somehow. I know I 'should' be shooting RAW and I do shoot RAW from time to time. And it's not that I don't understand its advantages, it's just that I struggle with the workflow. So I'm hoping for a bit of enlightenment. It seems to me that if you only shoot RAW, you have to have some system in place to batch process those images. There just aren't enough hours in the day to process each image individually. I have CS3 and I know that I can batch process a folder full of RAW images with Photoshop's File Automate Batch command (presumably Lightroom can do something similar), but here is where things get murky. So - I'm interested in how others go about the process while still retaining a measure of sanity. A few questions, then... Do you point your conversion software at a folder of RAW images and let it get on with the job while you watch the latest episode (or two) of Mythbusters? If so, isn't this just handing over the image processing function to software? Do you go back and 'tweak' the images? or Do you look at the JPG previews to decide which images are the 'Hero Images' (as the late Bruce Fraser called them) and restrict RAW conversion to those? If you batch convert the lot, do you convert to a lossless format (TIFF or PSD)? There doesn't seem to be much point in converting to JPG - you could do that in camera. Do you archive your 'second string' images as RAW, or do you convert to JPG and ditch the originals? What's the advantages of shooting RAW + JPG? (perhaps one advantage is that you could keep just the JPGs of your 'second string' images if you can't bring yourself to ditch them entirely). In summary - if you shoot RAW exclusively (or mainly), how do you manage the workflow and still have a life?? Couldn't agree more, Tim. I immediately run through all my exposures from a big shoot using Lightroom and reject anything that I know is never going to be worth processing any further. After a quick second pass looking for picks and another quick review, I then delete them from the hard drive and forget they existed. Since I tend to shoot slowly and carefully on my personal work, I don't see three quarters going in the bit bucket most of the time ... usually more like half ... but when I'm doing an event assignment the percentage can be closer to 90%. Mark, I don't understand why one would stop in Bridge on the way from the memory card to Lightroom. Rick http://photo.net/photos/RickW --- On Mon, 5/30/11, Mark Roberts m...@robertstech.com wrote: OK, here's my workflow - just put into practice after coming back from NH with several hundred images... I bring all the images onto my hard drive and, using Bridge, separate them into appropriate directories (or folders in weenie-speak). Then I delete the obvious clunkers (really serious problems like hit shutter button by mistake, hand held at 2-second-shutter-speed, etc.) Then I re-name the files as per my personal file naming scheme. This may not be a step at all in your work flow but it takes a couple of seconds per directory with CKRename) Now I import everything into Lightroom. After importation I tweak each image to get it good enough for general purposes. If I really have a lot of images this may include a few steps in which I give Lightroom the go ahead to automatically do what it thinks is best: this may not be perfect, but it's always better than what the camera's built-in JPEG engine would have come up with. Often I'll set the adjustments for each image myself but this takes very little time at all - here's the real catch - with enough practice. The more experience you get doing this the less time it will take. Often, close inspection will let me cull a few more duds from the hard drive. At this point everything is generally good enough for publication for all but the most critical purposes. At this I look for the hero shots to give them some extra attention. Re: Peso: So Pumped
Steve, I would agree that the buildings are problematic. Sometimes the pump is in front of a 10 foot wide, stand alone building, no bigger than a small 1 car garage and quite interesting. More often, the abandoned pump sits on a bit of concrete pad in front of an expanded and re-skinned building that is now a convenience store. The new siding on the building belies the original building beneath. Regards, Bob S. Before moving to Silicon Valley I used to live in Nashua, NH. Getting into Boston was usually done by driving to the Alewife Parkway T stop and taking the red line. I was putting around 6000 miles/year onto the Mustang, and maybe another 1000-1500 on the snow day transport. Re: Peso: So Pumped
Oddly, the last two buildings have clearly been turned into residences. The old pump has been left out front like a lawn gnome. Only the first pump has a clearly abandoned store behind it. On Tue, May 31, 2011 at 2:13 PM, Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com wrote: Steve, I would agree that the buildings are problematic.
