RE: They should have done this one first
The phrase cold, dead hands comes to mind with the MZ-S! I've gone back to shooting family stuff with it, as my wife likes to get prints rather than look at photos on screen - and I tend to be slack at printing digital off, never mind the inevitable post-processing. It is one of the best cameras Pentax produced, in my admittedly limited experience of handling those from the 80's. Mine's had a CLA here in Oz, and is as good as new, and I have no idea how many frames I've shot with it. I also take an SV for a walk now and then, just for old time's sake - and it still works perfectly too... Re: PPG
They allowed me to vote last night, and I voted successfully for about 15 minutes, to check that it was really working, and to try to help them catch up a bit. I wonder what happened to the votes that were made when the images kept repeating? I had submitted a small group of images a few weeks ago. One was accepted just before the problems arose. Now, as soon as voting started again, the rest were immediately declined. I wonder if the problem had any effect on this. Two were, in my opinion, clearly better than the one they accepted. I guess I will have to re-submit them to reassure myself that the problems in voting did not influence the process. In any even, yesterday I had no Photos awaiting submission. Today, there is one entry there, which appears to be blank, even though I did not upload anything yesterday -- or indeed in the last two weeks. Another glitch of some sort. I am concerned not so much about the site itself, but about the impression it gives people about Pentax. It makes it seem like the company either doesn't care about its loyal customers who post to the gallery, or that the company isn't technologically savvy enough to run an on-line gallery. I don't believe either is the case, but I worry about the guy with an old *ist D who is thinking of upgrading and the questions that may be raised in his mind about whether Pentax is on the cutting edge of photo equipment or not. July PUG - It's a bit Strange
G'day all There's still room for a bit more 'strangeness' in the July PUG. So far 11 contributors. The cut off date for submissions is nominally 30 June but the submission form should be up for a bit longer yet. Submit here: http://pug.komkon.org/submit/ Submission Guidelines here: http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html The main requirements are: * Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels * Max file size: 300k * Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or lens used is Pentax. Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure the image looks right on line. I usually check the colour space of submitted images but I've been known to forget. The new Pens look very good, but it's the lens announcements that pique my interest. Fast 12 and 45 mm, add the new Summilux 25mm from Panasonic, and they now have my preferred lens kit in hand. All they need beyond that, in addition to the existing FT/mFT macro lenses, is a fast 85mm ... for me, anyway. I fully expect the next pro-grade body from Olympus following the E-5 to be 100% compatible with Micro-FourThirds lenses as well as FourThirds SLR lenses. That will most likely have built-in an even better EVF than the current Olympus VF-2 option. That's what I'm waiting for before doing any expansion of my Olympus system gear. I am leaving Pentax because it limits me...
Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and maybe a K5 update later... But how many times I heard this from friends... countless. Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography. I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of mine directed me to his page. (FYI: http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ ) So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached his level and you feel it's not enough for you? Obviously... the answer is no :D But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no. But which other company offers you the possibility to try the astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the use of the camera comfortable? But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :) So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my photography needs. Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so many rants then why not a praise? :) Regards, .t -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: Cat photo
From: Mark Roberts Our little friend Zephyr died Saturday ant age 17+ http://www.robertstech.com/temp/ I've always been more of a dog person myself, but since meeting Lisa and her cats I've come to the conclusion that it's the owner and how they raise the pet that makes the difference. Zephyr was the friendliest, most affectionate cats I've ever known. He used to follow me around like a puppy at times. He'd had chronic pancreatitis for years and then eventually became diabetic, requiring twice-daily insulin injections. He also has asthma, with occasional noisy mid-night coughing attacks. He had a good, long life and was definitely high maintenance but we still miss the little guy. I'm sorry for your loss. Re: Photo.net no more
You need a space in there between 127.0.0.1 and ads.doubleclick.net. The line should read: 127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.net Comments in the hosts file begin with '#' There's a good site for pre-written hosts files: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm Also contains a lot of troubleshooting information. Apparently Windows Vista and Windows 7 don't want to let you make changes to the hosts file. From: Ecke PDML In Windows, open C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in notepad and add a line that says 127.0.0.1ads.doubleclick.net then restart your computer and links to that server will go straight to nirvana =) 2011/6/29 Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com: Bruce, Oh you gotta give us more details on that! From: drd1...@gmail.com I think I'll just continue to cuss at the ad. Carry on, gentlefolk. Or you could go to http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm and download the batch file that will automatically install a new hosts file that has a current list of most abuse sites. If you have an existing hosts file the batch file renames it saves it as a backup before installing the new file.
