Re: Pentax DA 18-135 zoom
Hi Dan, On Wed, 14 Mar 2012 16:03:45 -0400 Daniel J. I just checked in Lightroom, and out of the 8200 images shot, 4300 are with the 18-135. - It is SMALL and light (significantly smaller than the 16-50), - It focusses really FAST and accurate compared to most of my other lenses - It focusses really CLOSE making it usable for near-macro nature shots - It has an excellent range for a walk-about lens. Of course the optical quality does not match that of a prime, but that said, I have made some remarkable sharp images with it. Top sharpness is in the center though, the corners suffer a bit, but for most of what I use it for, that is not that important. Several of my images accepted in the PPG are with this lens, including a near-macro shot of a dragonfly I have used super-zooms before, the Pentax 28-200 on film which was 'just-OK' and the Tamron 18-200 on digital which was almost unusable. The 18-135 on the K5 is in a different league, it is perfectly usable. (partly because of the good high ISO capabilities of that body) It only goes off the K5 if I need more reach (Sigma 50-500), a dedicated macro, or more light like the 50 1.4 of the 85 1.4, or one of the FA and DA limitteds. OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port
I know this a completely off-topic question, but I bet there is someone in the PDML who can help a friend of mine to solve his doubts. He's 75 and a computer illiterate. I've been helping him to grasp the basics of Internet and Windows use since last summer. So far I've taught him how to browse web pages, send e-mails and now I'm trying to introduce him to the basic administration of folders, files and disk space. I haven't been very successful so far and I'm beginning to think he should have bought an Apple computer instead. He's also a classical music fan and a bit of an amateur musician and having downloaded a programme which allows him to play music using his laptop keyboard, now wants to go a step further and link his Casio MIDI keyboard to a USB port of his laptop and use it to play music, as it is much more comfortable than using his laptop's keyboard. As I am his computer advisor, he asked me if that was possible. I have looked at the instruction manual of his Casio keyboard, and it has both MIDI IN, OUT and THROUGH connectors. I have seen that MIDI to USB converter cables are easy to find, but knowing nothing about MIDI my questions are: What more is needed for his intended purpose?, Does he need any special software or controllers?, Do I have to perform any configuration changes for Windows 7 to recognize his MIDI keyboard? Re: OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port
MIDI is a world of weird, but I'd advise you/your friend to get one of these: http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html M-Audio stuff has excellent cross-platform compatibility, in general, and excellent software support. Any decent music package will automatically detect the MIDI driver that comes with the device and talk to your keyboard. If the keyboard is an older one, or a less popular one, you may have to fiddle around to map the MIDI commands and such, but it can be done with patience. I have one of the older 2X2 Midisports and I used it under Windows before moving exclusively to Mac. It worked just fine with the Mac driver. Ignore the MIDI-through jack, by the way. Only useful if daisy-chaining devices and nobody does that anymore. Full in/out channels are just too cheap to need daisy-chaining (plus stock serial MIDI runs insanely slowly, about 38Kbps). He might consider someday moving up to a keyboard with a USB connector that supports MIDI over USB. Pretty much the modern standard. Look around the M-Audio site. This one's really for Frank, so the rest of you can safely move along. Oh hell, have a look anyway. :-) I popped in to the Gallery Studio Cafe (Lakeshore and Islington -- Frank's neck of the woods) on Wednesday evening to see the gallery space and the very impressive art, and to hear an old friend, Steven Ambrose, fronting the Uptown Swing Band, a nine-piece jazz outfit who play there regularly. The band was smoking hot (after a suitable warm-up period). Steven is a fine vocalist and a comedian, so it was a real pleasure to be there. I was also joined by my wife, my studio workshop teacher, her charming husband, and the ever-radiant model Elle, who is also a singer/songwriter and was totally digging the old 1940's chestnuts they were performing. I was distracted and had had a beer and most of my shots turned to mush. But despite my worst efforts this one seemed to work ... I'd say the painterly look came from a happy confluence of the light in there which is almost all bounced off of the hanging art, the DA* 55 at f:1.4 which has a pleasant softness, plus ISO 1600 grain and a modest amount of NR which has an overall smoothing effect. Re: K7 and K20 AF adjustment
I dial in the autofocus on all my lenses. It's fairly simple and well worth the effort. You can find instructions and targets for doing it online. With that 16-50/2.8 you should also check to make sure the focus field is flat. You can do that by shooting a brick wall off a tripod at f 2.8. with each side of the frame equidistant from the center of the lens. If one side of the frame is sharper than the other side, you have a lens with a manufacturing defect. Quite a few of those were produced and sold when the lens was first released. Later production is okay. Paul On Mar 16, 2012, at 2:16 PM, mary pitrone wrote: Does any one on the list use this setting on their bodies, to adjust the AF setting on the lens. Such is the fate of cats, dogs, many flower macros ... and pretty girls. I gather that in the larger photography world, and what is the PDML but a microcosm of it, cats, flowers and pretty girls are phases of development that you are allowed to dabble in, if you must, then outgrow. That is if you are Serious About Photography. Landscapes and street are among the few truly honourable destinations. Aberrant photogs like Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman, Sam Haskins: all sad cases. Just think what they could have done if they hadn't gotten stuck at the pretty girls in frou-frou gowns stage. Or in Sam's case, nothing at all. Edward Steichen, that turncoat. Worst one of all; was progressing just fine, then suddenly abandoned all that was good and returned to frock-shots. We'll allow Edward Weston his foibles. At least he was making pretty girls resemble conch shells, and vice versa. If I'm lucky, I too will outgrow my present fascination with imaging expressions of femininity. :-) Beware the siren call, Larry, lest you too start looking for suitable LBDs and Fendi heels. Re: PESO: Yellow Tang
Thanks for looking, Ann. The tang is a variety of surgeon fish. It takes its name from the sharp spine at the base of the tail, which is used as a weapon. From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, tang means a projecting shank, prong, fang, or tongue (as on a knife, file, or sword) to connect with the handle.
