Re: Pentax DA 18-135 zoom

2012-03-16 Thread Jan van Wijk
Hi Dan,

On Wed, 14 Mar 2012 16:03:45 -0400 Daniel J. Matyola wrote:

Does anyone have any experience with, or opinions on, the following lens?

smc PENTAX-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-135mm ED AL [IF] DC WR

I got that one with my K5, almost two years ago, and still is my default lens
for it.

I just checked in Lightroom, and out of the 8200 images shot, 4300 are with the
18-135.

- It is SMALL and light (significantly smaller than the 16-50),
- It focusses really FAST and accurate compared to most of my other lenses
- It focusses really CLOSE making it usable for near-macro nature shots
- It has an excellent range for a walk-about lens.

Of course the optical quality does not match that of a prime, but that said, I
have made
some remarkable sharp images with it. Top sharpness is in the center though,
the corners suffer a bit, but for most of what I use it for, that is not that
important.

Several of my images accepted in the PPG are with this lens,
including a near-macro shot of a dragonfly

I have used super-zooms before, the Pentax 28-200 on film which was 'just-OK'
and the Tamron 18-200 on digital which was almost unusable.

The 18-135 on the K5 is in a different league, it is perfectly usable.
(partly because of the good high ISO capabilities of that body)

It only goes off the K5 if I need more reach (Sigma 50-500), a dedicated macro,
or more light like the 50 1.4 of the 85 1.4, or one of the FA and DA limitteds.

Regards, JvW

OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port

2012-03-16 Thread Carlos R.
I know this a completely off-topic question, but I bet there is someone
in the PDML who can help a friend of mine to solve his doubts. He's 75
and a computer illiterate. I've been helping him to grasp the basics of
Internet and Windows use since last summer. So far I've taught him how
to browse web pages, send e-mails and now I'm trying to introduce him to
the basic administration of folders, files and disk space. I haven't
been very successful so far and I'm beginning to think he should have
bought an Apple computer instead.

He's also a classical music fan and a bit of an amateur musician and
having downloaded a programme which allows him to play music using his
laptop keyboard, now wants to go a step further and link his Casio MIDI
keyboard to a USB port of his laptop and use it to play music, as it is
much more comfortable than using his laptop's keyboard.

As I am his computer advisor, he asked me if that was possible. I have
looked at the instruction manual of his Casio keyboard, and it has both
MIDI IN, OUT and THROUGH connectors. I have seen that MIDI to USB
converter cables are easy to find, but knowing nothing about MIDI my
questions are: What more is needed for his intended purpose?, Does he
need any special software or controllers?, Do I have to perform any
configuration changes for Windows 7 to recognize his MIDI keyboard?

Thanks to all on his behalf,

Carlos

The DA 70mm isn't an SDM lens, it is screw driven. After what happened
to the SDM motor of my 50-135 2.8, I wouldn't risk buying a 16-50mm 2.8,
no matter how good it is. Pentax should release a new version of this
lens, either with a DC motor (as in the 18-135mm) or a ring motor. At
least nowadays here in Spain they are giving a 5 year warranty on their
DA*, DA Limited and FA Limited lenses.

Re: OT: Question about a MIDI keyboard and USB port

2012-03-16 Thread Bruce Walker
MIDI is a world of weird, but I'd advise you/your friend to get one of these:

http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html

M-Audio stuff has excellent cross-platform compatibility, in general,
and excellent software support. Any decent music package will
automatically detect the MIDI driver that comes with the device and
talk to your keyboard. If the keyboard is an older one, or a less
popular one, you may have to fiddle around to map the MIDI commands
and such, but it can be done with patience.

I have one of the older 2X2 Midisports and I used it under Windows
before moving exclusively to Mac. It worked just fine with the Mac
driver.

Ignore the MIDI-through jack, by the way. Only useful if
daisy-chaining devices and nobody does that anymore. Full in/out
channels are just too cheap to need daisy-chaining (plus stock serial
MIDI runs insanely slowly, about 38Kbps).

He might consider someday moving up to a keyboard with a USB connector
that supports MIDI over USB. Pretty much the modern standard. Look
around the M-Audio site.

But OMG his description of how he took it! Gimme a break!

BTW, interesting to note that Gursky's Rhine II which is the current record

didn't make that money, the print's owner did. In Lik's case he was the seller
so the million went into his pocket.

I hadn't heard of him until now. A look at his online gallery left me
with mixed feelings, but more positive than negative. I saw some that
didn't excite me but overall I thought it was pretty decent, and there
were some I thought were excellent. While it looked like saturation
was boosted I didn't find it excessively so in most cases.

Jack, you need to spend an evening or three viewing the Most Popular

you'll be dialing-up the old saturation knob to levels you never
thought possible. :-)

Oh hell, have a look anyway. :-)

I popped in to the Gallery Studio Cafe (Lakeshore and Islington --
Frank's neck of the woods) on Wednesday evening to see the gallery
space and the very impressive art, and to hear an old friend, Steven
Ambrose, fronting the Uptown Swing Band, a nine-piece jazz outfit who
play there regularly. The band was smoking hot (after a suitable
warm-up period). Steven is a fine vocalist and a comedian, so it was a
real pleasure to be there. I was also joined by my wife, my studio
workshop teacher, her charming husband, and the ever-radiant model
Elle, who is also a singer/songwriter and was totally digging the old
1940's chestnuts they were performing.

I was distracted and had had a beer and most of my shots turned to
mush. But despite my worst efforts this one seemed to work ...

I must admit, I really like this one. It's the best by far that I've seen of
his work (admittedly I've not seen much).

But OMG his description of how he took it! Gimme a break!

BTW, interesting to note that Gursky's Rhine II which is the current record
holder for most expensive photograph was sold on the secondary market. Gursky
didn't make that money, the print's owner did. In Lik's case he was the seller
so the million went into his pocket.

 million. This link http://www.artdaily.com/index.asp?int_sec=2int_new=44121

a very well executed image, but $1 million ?

I had never heard of him until a recent series about his photographic

 on the Weather channel.

He comes across as bigger than life, a little too aninmated but I think
 his
 photos speak for them self.

 Kenneth Waller
 http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller

I hadn't heard of him until now. A look at his online gallery left me
with mixed feelings, but more positive than negative. I saw some that
didn't excite me but overall I thought it was pretty decent, and there
were some I thought were excellent. While it looked like saturation
was boosted I didn't find it excessively so in most cases.

 Tom C.

There's an image of it here:
http://www.petapixel.com/2011/01/13/australian-landscape-photographer-peter-lik-sells-photo-for-1-million/

It's a nice image but the selling price says more about the buyer than
it does about the photograph.

Honestly, Larry, almost nothing done in Lr. I did a tiny bit of
mid-tone contrast with the Tone Curve (Lights -21; Darks +21), Clarity
+30 (some compensation for being soft), NR: Lum 30, Detail 69; Lens
Correction on; and that's it.

I'd say the painterly look came from a happy confluence of the light
in there which is almost all bounced off of the hanging art, the DA*
55 at f:1.4 which has a pleasant softness, plus ISO 1600 grain and a
modest amount of NR which has an overall smoothing effect.

Gotta remember that one. :-)

Interesting. I've never seen a need for it on my K-5. I bought a katzeye for
my K20, and almost never used autofocus anyways.

I think I have more problems getting the camera to autofocus on the right
thing, than I do getting it to autofocus accurately. It seems that most of the
time I use autofocus, the camera is focused perfectly on the wrong thing. I.e.
The microphone in front of the musician.

Re: K7 and K20 AF adjustment

2012-03-16 Thread Paul Stenquist
I dial in the autofocus on all my lenses. It's fairly simple and well worth the
effort. You can find instructions and targets for doing it online.

With that 16-50/2.8 you should also check to make sure the focus field is flat.
You can do that by shooting a brick wall off a tripod at f 2.8. with each side
of the frame equidistant from the center of the lens. If one side of the frame
is sharper than the other side, you have a lens with a manufacturing defect.
Quite a few of those were produced and sold when the lens was first released.
Later production is okay.

Interesting. I've never seen a need for it on my K-5. I bought a katzeye

My K-5 required minor adjustment. It's important if you use autofocus wide open
with a fast lens and want to make sure it's the eyeball, rather than the
eyelash, that is critically sharp.

I think I have more problems getting the camera to autofocus on the right
thing, than I do getting it to autofocus accurately.

Use single point autofocus and choose the point that best suits your image.

It seems that most of the time I use autofocus, the camera is focused
perfectly on the wrong thing. I.e. The microphone in front of the musician.

Step #1: choose AF point = SEL. Don't use Auto. That's what I find so
frustrating with Point'n'Shits, they *always* focus on the wrong
thing. I hate 'em!

Step #2: either focus on the center point and reframe, or learn how to
quickly shift the AF-point with the arrow buttons. This last thing is
what has scared me away from the K-7 and K-5 because they changed this
in a negative way and I ain't gonna relearn that.

Of course, if you always use MF, you don't need this focus adjust
nonsense anyhow.

That's pretty much what I do. It's not entirely accurate to say that I never
let the camera chose the focus point, but that's a decent first approximation.

I'm using AF more with the K-5. Though I did just pick up a $20 split prism,
because shooting with my K-x two weeks ago reminded me of how nice good manual
focus is.

All that being said, it would probably be worthwhile to dial in the AF
adjustment on at least my most commonly used lenses.

there are several USB-based keyboards that are reasonable quality and they are

keyboard he has is very good); M-Audio, Akai and a few others make 2-octave
keyboards for around $50, and 3+ octaves with a somewhat better touch aren't

when i work with non-expert computer users (which i do on the side

key; this is especially true with older people who tend not to practice enough

means less wiring, and i expect Windows is like OS X in that you could just
plug in the USB keyboard, launch some equivalent to GarageBand, and start
playing ...

Very elegant, Paul. There is so much of that grass around, you did well to
spot such a nicely formed flower head.

Thanks Mark. This one's in my garden. I planted one about a dozen years ago.
I've divided it a couple of times and now have four. My favorite ornamental

GESO: Spring WIldflowers

2012-03-16 Thread Mark C
I took a day off today and went down to the Dowagiac Woods in Cass
County, MI, to see if the wildflowers were out. Usually there is nothing
but harbinger of spring at this time of year, but I found a few sprigs
of hepatica, much earlier than usual.

So here is a handful of very early woodland wildflowers:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php

or

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/early-spring-wildflowers

I also shot a roll of Ilford SFX 120 in a Holga with a deep red filter
smacked on it - the negs are hanging over my bathtub as I type this, and
look promising.

If you're interested, that is. There aren't many studio photography
 fans on the PDML.

You think that because there are so many complaints every time someone posts
yet another picture of a pretty woman?

 --
Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est

We have a special way of complaining here on the PDML, we simply
ignore the offending post and move on, leaving the perp to wonder if
their message even went out. Such is the fate of cats, dogs, many
flower macros ... and pretty girls.

I gather that in the larger photography world, and what is the PDML
but a microcosm of it, cats, flowers and pretty girls are phases of
development that you are allowed to dabble in, if you must, then
outgrow. That is if you are Serious About Photography. Landscapes and
street are among the few truly honourable destinations.

Aberrant photogs like Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman,
Sam Haskins: all sad cases. Just think what they could have done if
they hadn't gotten stuck at the pretty girls in frou-frou gowns stage.
Or in Sam's case, nothing at all. Edward Steichen, that turncoat.
Worst one of all; was progressing just fine, then suddenly abandoned
all that was good and returned to frock-shots.

We'll allow Edward Weston his foibles. At least he was making pretty
girls resemble conch shells, and vice versa.

If I'm lucky, I too will outgrow my present fascination with imaging
expressions of femininity. :-) Beware the siren call, Larry, lest you
too start looking for suitable LBDs and Fendi heels. Unless it's for
yourself. I understand that that's ok.

got lost on purpose. I found this:

This is part of my project to shoot exclusively with the Pentax A

project at the beginning, but since we're halfway through, and I was
pretty happy with what I got today, I thought I would mention it
again. You can see more on my blog:

I took a day off today and went down to the Dowagiac Woods in Cass County, MI,
to see if the wildflowers were out. Usually there is nothing but harbinger of
spring at this time of year, but I found a few sprigs of hepatica, much earlier
than usual.

So here is a handful of very early woodland wildflowers:

or

I also shot a roll of Ilford SFX 120 in a Holga with a deep red filter smacked
on it - the negs are hanging over my bathtub as I type this, and look promising.

here in urban Denver (in the non-wild, my yard) i saw gazania and mallow in

If you're interested, that is. There aren't many studio photography

You think that because there are so many complaints every time someone

I guess I'm a fan of studio photography. Just don't have the money to

Re: PESO: Yellow Tang

2012-03-16 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking, Ann.

The tang is a variety of surgeon fish. It takes its name from the
sharp spine at the base of the tail, which is used as a weapon. From
the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, tang means a projecting shank,
prong, fang, or tongue (as on a knife, file, or sword) to connect with
the handle.
