I posted the following joke on a forum for fetish photography:

A photographer takes beautiful photos of women.

And then, somewhere in between is the vast majority of us who have no

Re: Tele-Zoom Lens

2012-03-30 Thread Carlos R.

Daniel, of the lenses you mentioned I have the SMC-F 80-200mm 4.7-5.6
Its advantages are: lightweight, 49mm filter thread, internal zoom (the
lens doesn't change its length when zoomed), good IQ (though not
outstanding, but better than most people think), cheap price, metal lens
mount, fast focusing, small size.

On the less side: slow (4.7-5.6), cheap build quality.

All in all, its a good lens if you want it small, light and cheap. If
you need something faster, you'll pay the price both in money and
weight. A better quality alternative is the SMC-F 70-210mm 4-5.6. Its IQ
is excellent, at least on film (not to be confused with the FA 70-200mm
power zoom or the non-SMC F 70-200 4.5.6).

But photo number two strikes me as a perfect example of how an artist

past I have been too hard of a worker and I burned myself out,

Sadly for the employer, that is probably not that person's True Worst

his own worst shot is probably only showing one that still brags in
some way (i shoot celebrities or famous people, I was there for

could have done more with... not one that truly qualifies as his Worst

But, I have an almost default tendency to do buildings -- especially

Thank you very much, Jack!

Western Kentucky can be a photogenic place, though I never really knew
until I decided to start taking photos of it. It's kind of a Memory Lane

on the corner where my friends and I would hide our beer as teenagers.
We'd have one of their older cousins drop it off there for us and we'd
pick it up on the way out for the night.

Any PDML members doing Alternative Processes?

2012-03-30 Thread Darren Addy
I miss old school printmaking. But more than that, I'm becoming
increasingly fascinated by the Really Old School processes that are
today euphemistically called Alternative Processes. These include:
Cyanotype
Kallitype (including Van Dyke brown)
Platinum prints
etc.

What is interesting to me is that virtually all of these are contact
print processes. Now not a lot of people are shooting large format
film today. So what's up with the revival in interest in Alternative
Processes? Well, digital has done wonders for old school contact
printing. You can now print out large format digital negatives on
transparency film using ink jet printers. The larger format the
printer, the larger the transparency (negative) that you can produce.

You probably already have a great library of images that you could
work from. Images that could take on a whole new life as a Platinum
print, or a Cyanotype, for example. Some of these processes can even
be used on fabric, meaning you could make some gnarly t-shirts to show
off your own images.

For those interested in learning more, I recommend:
http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes
or the f295 forums: http://www.f295.org/Pinholeforum/forum/Blah.pl
(scroll down to the forums for Hand Crafted, Historic Process, and
Non-Conventional Images)

Ron Reeder is one of the recognized experts in creating digital
negatives. His process (used by many) is outlined in this inexpensive
eBook:

 LOL

Bokeh is the quality of the out of focus blur so all cameras and
lenses have bokeh. Exactly what the bokeh looks like depends on the
format, the lens, the aperture setting, the distance setting, and the
 scene.

Larger formats allow more control of selective focus zone when there's
enough lens speed and the magnification of the subject is the same
compared to smaller formats. IOW, you can make more blur by narrowing
the focus zone with a 50mm lens on 24x36 mm format than you can with
16x24 mm format and a 35mm lens, given the same range of apertures to
 work with.

Bokeh, however, is the quality of the blur, not the magnitude.

RE: My worst shot

2012-03-30 Thread Bob W
I appreciate the link being shared, but after looking at the shots, I
think the premise is a bit of a farce.
[...]
Similarly, a photographer that is allowed to choose his
own worst shot is probably only showing one that still brags in some
way (i shoot celebrities or famous people, I was there for historic
events, I travel the world) or a photo that he wishes he could have
done more with... not one that truly qualifies as his Worst Shot.

I'd have thought it obvious that no-one can have a worst shot, however you
may define worst, but the photographers seem to have chosen the near misses
which they most regret - the one that got away - and that seems like a
reasonable enough definition to me for the purposes of a newspaper article.

In any case, I think it's valuable to hear people talking about and
analysing their pictures even if they do use it as an ego trip.

As soon as Dr. Fenger spotted me with the big black SLR and the 50-135

Took me a lot of shots until she became relaxed again. But she adores
animals so as she interacted with the dog she became herself. Useful
trick that's worked before. :-)

I took this in the afternoon in her main consultation room, with its
large north-west facing windows. All found light, no flash. I did
notice that the matrix metering was fooled by something so I went
manual and incident-metered the light.

Seems the more I shoot, the less I rely on automation. Is this some
sort of creeping curmudgeonalization setting in?

I wish Tessa's nose was less soft, but I'd have had to stop down and

well, what ya gonna do?

Re: If you use Lightroom and need a new MacBook

2012-03-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
As followup on this thread:

Adobe released Lightroom 4.1RC yesterday. I decided to test it, along
with an external drive that a client was having some problems with. So
last night I copied a 300G subset of my original image file repository
to it (drive works fine, I think the client's 2006 MacBook simply
isn't putting out enough power on the USB or FireWire ports to support
a 500G portable drive...). This morning I used LR4.1RC to create a new
catalog and import all those files in place (19,700 12 to 18 Mpixel
raw originals plus a few hundred 60-130 Mbyte TIFF-DNG scan files),
creating a full cache of normal size previews in the process.

With the MacBook Pro 13 and 2.4Ghz processor, Import in place took
about 25 minutes, then it started the preview rendering process. I
stopped it to head to the office and carried the drive with me. Now I
have it continuing the preview process in the background while I do
all my other work in another space. Memory is all being used, but I'm
not seeing any slow-downs either in Lightroom or in my other work, so
whatever the MacBook Air's i5 1.7Ghz processor is doing seems to be
working just fine. The preview rendering process is about 2/3 of the
way to completed, should be done by the time I go home.

I've edited and exported a few photos while it was doing that too,
just to see, and the performance is just fine for me.

It strikes me that if any of these shots are the worst ones of any of

Re: Tele-Zoom Lens

2012-03-30 Thread P. J. Alling
The F 70-210mm is excellent on digital too. Sharp throughout it's
range, very low distortion, and very good contrast. Resolution better
than needed even on the K20Dsensor and I would expect the same even with
a K-5. It's only problem mechanically is that the zoom is controlled
through a cam and pin, with the pin held in place by two screws. If
either screw comes loose it can jam both the zoom ring and the focus
rings, if both come loose the zoom ring will spin beyond it's normal
range and mangle the data brush which is quite delicate and is no longer
available, rendering any repair problematic, which is something to keep
in mind. I've owned two of them and one is now a parts lens, the other
is awaiting a convenient time for me to send it in for repair,
(accompanied by the parts lens).

On 3/30/2012 5:56 AM, Carlos R. wrote:

Daniel, of the lenses you mentioned I have the SMC-F 80-200mm 4.7-5.6
Its advantages are: lightweight, 49mm filter thread, internal zoom
(the lens doesn't change its length when zoomed), good IQ (though not
outstanding, but better than most people think), cheap price, metal
lens mount, fast focusing, small size.

On the less side: slow (4.7-5.6), cheap build quality.

All in all, its a good lens if you want it small, light and cheap. If
you need something faster, you'll pay the price both in money and
weight. A better quality alternative is the SMC-F 70-210mm 4-5.6. Its
IQ is excellent, at least on film (not to be confused with the FA
70-200mm power zoom or the non-SMC F 70-200 4.5.6).

April (15th Anniversary) PUG

2012-03-30 Thread Brian Walters

At the risk of repeating myself.

The April PUG is the 15th Anniversary of the first PUG in April 1997
so let's make this the biggest and best PUG ever!

So far we have 23 submissions - surely we can do better! This is
shaping up to be the best gallery ever - you wouldn't want to miss out
on being a part of it.

There's no theme this month - just pick a photo you like and send it
in. Old farts (sorry, old timers), and those who have strayed from the
Pentax fold, might like to consider submitting an image that you
previously submitted to an earlier PUG. You can look through the
early PUGs via the 'Previous Galleries' link at the bottom of the
current PUG page (http://pug.komkon.org/). If you no longer have the
image, let me know and I'll extract it from whatever gallery it
appeared in.

The nominal closing date for submissions is - um, just about now.
But I'm going to keep the submission form active until the end of next
week.

The details:

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 pixels on the longest side.
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

RE: My worst shot

2012-03-30 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Bob W p...@web-options.com:

Yes - if this turns into a future PUG theme (and I've made a note...),
something like 'Close but no cigar' might be a good title. I fear a
PUG theme of 'My worst shot' would turn into a truly appalling gallery.

Besides which, we've all deleted our worst shots, haven't we?

ISO performance of the K-x was actually superior to the flagship,

 Can anyone educatify me?

Short version: there's a *lot* more to photography than high ISO performance.

Suggestion: download the user manual PDF for both cameras and compare
them. There are things in a K20D class body (and K-7, K-5) that K-x
(K-r) owners would boggle at. Many/most of these things don't matter
one jot to people who don't make a living from their camera, or don't
care to sync external flashes, or don't care to colour calibrate their
workflow end-to-end, etc.

There's a lot in a semi-pro camera body like this. After owning a K20D

still not holding me back.

Re: Any PDML members doing Alternative Processes?

2012-03-30 Thread Mark C
I'm interested in alternative processes and was watching some youtube
videos on digital negatives and inkjet transfers last week. I've been
experimenting with simulated inkjet dye transfer printing and actually
got a really nice print doing that last week - more by random chance
than anything since the registration of the 4 passes through the printer
is usually pretty poor. But hti sone print came out really nice.

From time to time I experiment with alternative processes regarding
film processing - like film solarization, alternative developers
(coffee, tea) - I keep meaning to try developing film in hops extract
but I'm not sure hops has the right chemistry for it. Gotta just get
some and try it. A while back I was also experimenting with developing
various films (like C41 and E6 films) in high potency developers (D19,
Dektol) and then not fixing the film but scanning the faint image that
would appear in the emulsion as a print, reversing and toning for a BW
image. It worked OK but aside from the gimmick factor the image was
nothing remarkable.

I manage one or two alternate projects a year - too little time. I've
not done anything with printing processes like you mention - I turned
printing over to digital processes long ago.

I'll remember this the next time someone starts yakking about Pentax's
poor customer relations.

I like the motion blur in the person walking over on the right side of
the frame, though the rest of the image isn't quite up to your typical
standards.

Nevertheless, I couldn't help getting a good belly laugh out of your
vexation with the length of the original URL. So, all in all, a great post.

I like the gentle lighting but for the section immediately below the
G. It looks like pretty challenging light to work with overall, and
you made the most of it in getting good detail throughout.

I especially like the church, Mark. The soft vignetting and other Holga-isms
emphasize the charm and anachronisms of the old chapel so nicely.

Beautiful!

The rest of the little gallery is lovely, too.

photo folder

2012-03-30 Thread jn289
Hey guys and girls, I am back. Been off the list for a while. I did
speak to Ann S a few times on the phone.

I just added some photos to this folder which is flowers and bugs.
Here is the link

http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=851371

I added copyright info to the face of the first eight photos that I
just uploaded. Thoughts ?
The reason is some of my photos have been showing on other people's
web pages. One of my car photos that was published in Super Stock
Magazine is on a SmugMug web page.
