GESO: Photowalk from 4/02
Hi all, Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is that I took the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 along with the K20D fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it wasn't until the end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my ISO on the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a mid-afternoon sun with a cloudless sky! I don't know how it got that way unless I accidentally hit the magical combination on the 4-way while squatting down to take a shot with the K20D. In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got at least a few decent shots at the expense of a little shoe leather. Anyway . . . here. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629730945173/ I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to use it more often. RE: Children by Joe Dixon
Lurker pulls his head out to say: Two of our best commenting on a stunning shot by Joe Dixon. Frankly, what Joe did was impossible. First he used a Film Camera, and an old one at that. A Pentax LX that could be Thirty-two years old, if he has the Early Version made the first year. Next he used a lens without auto-focus on two moving subjects. At close range, no less. Supposedly this lens could be up to 28 years old. A rumored Pentax A* 20mm f:\2.8 ED. Frankly I doubt such a lens was ever made. The whole thing sounds made up. Hmph! Film, no less. Everyone knows you can only take good pictures with the very newest equipment. 'Cept for me. New lens prices
So, how 'bout them new lens prices?!? I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen in the Ricoh era (yes, I think the K-01 is a great idea) and therefore I've been optimistic about the future. But these new lens prices seem, shall we say, less than well-considered. I guess I can understand a pricing policy designed to give bricks-and-morter shops a chance to compete, but I don't see how it's necessary to nearly double the price of some lenses to do that. Sorry, but I don't see people lining up to pay $1500 for a DA* 16-50mm. Can anybody explain this to me? On the bright side, the price of the FA 31mm Limited hasn't changed, and in comparison it now seems like a heck of a deal. Re: It's just two buttons
It sounds like it would be one of those fun apps that may appeal to a few people. I reality, for me, I don't need or want special vibration codes for everyone in my address book. I have a code set for the family members that may need me in an emergency. That way when I'm teaching, or other times when I have the audio ringer turned off, I can tell by the pattern of the vibration whether I can ignore the incoming message, or if I should actually take the phone out of my pocket and look at the screen. I'm in the generation that grew up before cell phones and pagers and don't feel the need to instantly respond to every ring or buzz of the phone. I remember when nobody called you unless it was important. How times have changed. Not necessarily better or worse, but very different. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Tue, Apr 3, 2012 at 10:26 AM, Matthew Hunt m...@pobox.com wrote: On Mon, Apr 2, 2012 at 9:59 PM, Stan Halpin s...@stans-photography.info wrote: How viable does it need to be? But I note that the Nikon 17-55/2.8 at $1424.00 (BH) isn't weather sealed; the Canon 16-35/2.8 at 1699.00 *is* weather sealed but costs almost $200 more than the Pentax and only goes to 35mm at the long end. Based on the problematic history reported here and elsewhere, I wouldn't pay this amount of money for the DA*16-50/2.8 lens. I had one, I sold it to a friend (and I wouldn't do that if I had any reservations about the one I had), but I've seen reports from others on everything from poor centering to failed focus motors, and mixed reviews on warranty service for it too. That could ba a $1400 hassle. I paid a similar price for a couple of the Olympus ZD lenses I've owned. Comparing them to the new Pentax lenses I've owned, I could easily see why they were worth the additional money: far superior construction quality, flawless reliability. Re: New lens prices
Last year's earthquake tsunami along with other natural disasters in Asia have affected the cost of production. I know that when Thailand flooded last year hard-drive prices spiked. I bought a 1.5TB drive for $60.00 in July and after the floods, the cheapest I could find that same drive was about $200.00. It's back down to $100.00 now. Looks like prices have come down some since they're beginning to recover. Maybe the same will happen with camera lens prices. From: Christine Nielsen Groan. The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should have bought it $700 ago. I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double? Yikes. Many thanks, Jack! The squirrel and the butterfly shots were all taken with the Promaster on the K-x, and the rest were shot with the K20D and A-50/1.7. I wasn't crazy about that Promaster when I first got it, but it's starting to grow on me. I think the smartest thing I did was taking the damned skylight filter off of it. -- Walt On 4/3/2012 5:04 PM, Jack Davis wrote: These are impressively sharp..and well rendered. Walt, if you have the time and don't mind, please identify which of these were taken with the Promaster. Thanks, much! As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited. Re: Pentax FF
It'd be easier to put a 24x36 sensor into a 645D body, and call it the 643D. It might even be possible to redesign it with a shorter registration distance (and smaller mirror) so you can use K-mount lenses. On 4/3/2012 2:54 PM, P. J. How hard would it be for Pentax to stick a FF sensor in something like a K5 body? Ball peen hammer, hydraulic press, some duct tape or super glue ... no problem; oughta' fit right in there. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: New lens prices
I must have missed that. I'm sure glad I've already got the 16-50, 50-135 60-250; Between them they now add up to around $2000 more than I paid. They're nice glass, but I'd think hard before paying that much. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: GESO: Photowalk from 4/02
Yeah, you don't routinely need two additional light dispersing glass surfaces. ;-) Thanks for info.
