I was concerned I might have wielded a heavy hand with the contrast in

Rick,
I've been looking for what I can say about this photo.
I think it lacks the people of the other photos and is not very successful.
Among the 6 Intermission photos, some are about dramatic geometry and
the rest are about people in the space.
Intermission 4 just doesn't have enough people.

GESO: Photowalk from 4/02

2012-04-03 Thread Walt Gilbert

Hi all,

Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little
redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is that I
took the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 along with the
K20D fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it wasn't
until the end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my ISO on
the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a mid-afternoon
sun with a cloudless sky! I don't know how it got that way unless I
accidentally hit the magical combination on the 4-way while squatting
down to take a shot with the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things
considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights
in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got at
least a few decent shots at the expense of a little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629730945173/

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to
use it more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

RE: Children by Joe Dixon

2012-04-03 Thread Morris Galloway

Lurker pulls his head out to say:

Two of our best commenting on a stunning shot by Joe Dixon.

Frankly, what Joe did was impossible. First he used a Film Camera, and
an old one at that. A Pentax LX that could be Thirty-two years old, if
he has the Early Version made the first year.

Next he used a lens without auto-focus on two moving subjects. At close
range, no less. Supposedly this lens could be up to 28 years old. A
rumored Pentax A* 20mm f:\2.8 ED. Frankly I doubt such a lens was ever
made.

The whole thing sounds made up. Hmph! Film, no less.

Everyone knows you can only take good pictures with the very newest
equipment. 'Cept for me. I've got some of the new stuff and still
can't do crap.

New lens prices

2012-04-03 Thread Bryan Jacoby
So, how 'bout them new lens prices?!?

I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen in the Ricoh era
(yes, I think the K-01 is a great idea) and therefore I've been
optimistic about the future. But these new lens prices seem, shall we
say, less than well-considered.

I guess I can understand a pricing policy designed to give
bricks-and-morter shops a chance to compete, but I don't see how it's
necessary to nearly double the price of some lenses to do that.
Sorry, but I don't see people lining up to pay $1500 for a DA*
16-50mm. Can anybody explain this to me?

On the bright side, the price of the FA 31mm Limited hasn't changed,
and in comparison it now seems like a heck of a deal. How could I not
buy one?

It would be rather tedious to make a morse code ringtone for each

The only question is are there enough weird people out there who

Thanks!

It sounds like it would be one of those fun apps that may appeal to a
few people.

I reality, for me, I don't need or want special vibration codes for
everyone in my address book. I have a code set for the family members
that may need me in an emergency. That way when I'm teaching, or
other times when I have the audio ringer turned off, I can tell by the
pattern of the vibration whether I can ignore the incoming message, or
if I should actually take the phone out of my pocket and look at the
screen.

I'm in the generation that grew up before cell phones and pagers and
don't feel the need to instantly respond to every ring or buzz of the
phone. I remember when nobody called you unless it was important.
How times have changed. Not necessarily better or worse, but very
different.

When I was 15 I went away for the summer; my father mowed one row and went to
 Sears for a power mower.

Groan.

The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should
have bought it $700 ago.

I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double?
Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the
value proposition... if that goes away, then what? Just as expensive
as Canikon, but quirkier, and with no FF option?

I guess I can understand a pricing policy designed to give
 bricks-and-morter shops a chance to compete, but I don't see how it's
necessary to nearly double the price of some lenses to do that.
Sorry, but I don't see people lining up to pay $1500 for a DA*

On the bright side, the price of the FA 31mm Limited hasn't changed,
and in comparison it now seems like a heck of a deal.  How could I not

Thanks!

Could be. But I note that the Nikon 17-55/2.8 at $1424.00 (BH) isn't
weather sealed; the Canon 16-35/2.8 at 1699.00 *is* weather sealed but
costs almost $200 more than the Pentax and only goes to 35mm at the
long end.

At a certain point, Pentax has to price their lenses comparably to the
competition because a lot of people will assume that cheaper means
inferior and expensive = better.

The critical thing is that Ricoh/Pentax increase the build quality
(particularly on this specific lens!) so that it's worth the new price
point. Based on the problematic history reported here and elsewhere, I
wouldn't pay this amount of money for the DA*16-50/2.8 lens. I had
one, I sold it to a friend (and I wouldn't do that if I had any
reservations about the one I had), but I've seen reports from others
on everything from poor centering to failed focus motors, and mixed
reviews on warranty service for it too. That could ba a $1400 hassle.

I paid a similar price for a couple of the Olympus ZD lenses I've
owned. Comparing them to the new Pentax lenses I've owned, I could
easily see why they were worth the additional money: far superior
construction quality, flawless reliability. (I won't get into debates
about their optical performance.)

Agreed. I was having a hard time justifying the purchase at the old

out at the new price.

i can see that working both ways — good equipment at a better price can also
build a reputation

but i can't say that i understand the shape of the Pentax market; as a single
data point myself, i had been cautiously considering purchasing new Pentax
lenses, but now i'm not even considering it; to make the price increase
logical, Ricoh must expect enough profit from reduced unit sales to offset
people like me

i think Ricoh missed an opportunity to couple the price increase with a really
strong support plan, and/or better warranty; that would have gotten the
market's attention in a positive way

Opportunity on Amazon Warehouse deals Pentax 16-50mm ?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000NO5QV6/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8qid=1333477764sr=8-1condition=used

These are returns (for whatever reason) but since they were purchased
before the price increase, Amazon may not have priced them
accordingly.
Right now they represent over $500 off of NEW. Probably won't last
long. (They are all eligible for 30 day return policy, so little

I thought the bottom line of foreground trees, 'the black', easily

Last year's earthquake tsunami along with other natural disasters in

I know that when Thailand flooded last year hard-drive prices spiked. I
bought a 1.5TB drive for $60.00 in July and after the floods, the
cheapest I could find that same drive was about $200.00. It's back down

Looks like prices have come down some since they're beginning to
recover. Maybe the same will happen with camera lens prices.

The weather proofing is critical for me. The 16-50 on the K-5 is a nearly
perfect daily driver combination. It's fast enough for most lighting
situations, it covers the critical zoom range, and in most cases, it's sharp
enough that any difference in sharpness between it and a prime is moot, if it's
even noticeable. Being able to take my camera out and shoot no matter what the
weather, even if it's raining, or a dust storm, is crucial. I've gotten some
of my best photos because I didn't need to worry if my camera got wet.

I would love to have a DA* (weather sealing and quick shift focus) version of
the DA35 macro as a daily driver prime. That would be close to the perfect
lens for photo walks in the woods.

Walt, photo 6311 is great, walking the fence..Joe

Hi all,

Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little
redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is
that I took the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6
along with the K20D fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some
reach, and it wasn't until the end of my photowalk that I discovered
that I'd had my ISO on the K-x set to, get this, 6400! In broad
daylight, under a mid-afternoon sun with a cloudless sky! I don't
know how it got that way unless I accidentally hit the magical
combination on the 4-way while squatting down to take a shot with
the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things
considered. Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out
highlights in the butterfly shots. Still, all in all, I can't
complain as I got at least a few decent shots at the expense of a
little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629730945173/

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come
to use it more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

Thanks!

RE: Children by Joe Dixon

2012-04-03 Thread jn289
Morris, this was a 200 mm F2.8 A Pentax lens...Also Pentax did make a
20 mm F2.8 A lens which I have one. Also have a 20 mm F4.0 M Pentax
lens...
Thanks for the remarks on the photo. I have some other photos of
other children playing, when I get to it I will post them. Again
Thanks, Joe

Lurker pulls his head out to say:

Two of our best commenting on a stunning shot by Joe Dixon.

Frankly, what Joe did was impossible. First he used a Film Camera,
and an old one at that. A Pentax LX that could be Thirty-two years
old, if he has the Early Version made the first year.

Next he used a lens without auto-focus on two moving subjects. At
close range, no less. Supposedly this lens could be up to 28 years
old. A rumored Pentax A* 20mm f:\2.8 ED. Frankly I doubt such a
lens was ever made.

The whole thing sounds made up. Hmph! Film, no less.

Everyone knows you can only take good pictures with the very newest
equipment. 'Cept for me. I've got some of the new stuff and still
can't do crap.

Can't imagine who would buy a white leather-covered camera.

one misleading detail, however, is saying that the unicorn variant
goes for $31,770 over the regular model's $8,000. Regular model M9-P
(itself a special variant ...!) goes for $8000, sure, but without any
lens at all. That lens goes for another $11,000 so the competing
standard model is $19,000 ... so a 40% premium for a limited edition
special of a special edition ...

Hmm. Maybe it is worth it ..

Walt, if you have the time and don't mind, please identify which of these
 were taken with the Promaster.

 Thanks, much!

 Subject: GESO: Photowalk from 4/02

 Hi all,

Just wanted to share these photos from yesterday. There's a little
redundancy, but not overmuch. The only real interesting tidbit is that I took
the K-x fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4.5-5.6  along with the K20D
fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it wasn't until the
end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my ISO on the K-x set to,
get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a mid-afternoon sun with a cloudless
sky! I don't know how it got that way unless I accidentally hit the magical
combination on the 4-way while squatting down to take a shot with the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things considered.
Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights in the butterfly
shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got at least a few decent
shots at the expense of a little shoe leather.

 Anyway . . . here.

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to use it
 more often.

As always, comments, critiques and suggestions are eagerly solicited.

 Thanks!
