PESO/GESO - Majestic Stones and Water

2012-06-27 Thread Igor Roshchin

I had a short conference trip to Banff earlier this month.
Despite the weather not being at its best (drizzle or snow, with low
clouds [*]), and me not having proper clothes for that, I managed to
find some terrific views and even to take some photos..

http://42graphy.org/galleries/banff-2012/_IR37097.html
http://42graphy.org/galleries/banff-2012/_IR36882.html

I am not sure which shot is better of these two:
http://42graphy.org/galleries/banff-2012/_IR37060.html
http://42graphy.org/galleries/banff-2012/_IR37160.html
I've been told that the color of the water is due to its purity, as it
comes from the melted snow.

A few photos from the same trip but with different subjects.

This shot has some nerdy humor in it:

And yet another funny shot with a followup:

Re: OT: Matting Framing

2012-06-27 Thread David Mann
On Jun 27, 2012, at 5:08 AM, Igor Roshchin wrote:

Just in case it would useful, some ideas on mounting prints on the board:
For mounting canvas prints (especially those that didn't have much
empty margin around the print), I've used foam (aka foam-core?) board
with self-adhesive surface. I bought it rather inexpensively (within $10
for about 20x30 piece) at a local art-supply store. They are rather
expensive via mail (and usually, you have to buy a pack of 10)

I used to frame my own pictures but gave up in the end because it was fiddly
and some materials were hard to find - especially the mouldings where I had to
deal with warped seconds unless I wanted to buy about a mile of a single
style.

I'd have just about killed for foam board with a self-adhesive surface as long
as it gave you plenty of working time before it set. But I've never even heard
of the stuff until now. I just used standard foam core.

I started out using photo-mounting dots sold by stationery stores but they
didn't hold the print flat so you could see the waviness under certain lighting
conditions. I'm too fussy to put up with that.

I then tried acid-free glue but you could see where the lines of glue were and
it started to set very quickly so any attempt to spread it resulted in a messy
disaster.

Eventually I found a product called Rollataq which has a hand-held roller where
the handle is filled with glue. My local art supplies shop was able to order
one for me.

http://www.daige.com/rollataq.htm

It's designed to spread the glue uniformly over the whole surface and you have
a few minutes to get everything positioned before it starts to set. It worked
very well and I had plenty of time to position the print.

Once the print was in place I'd add the mat, run a soft roller over the print
to deal with any air bubbles, then put the mat cutout over the photo to protect
it. Then I'd put a sheet of MDF (particle board) over the top to keep
everything flat while the glue sets.

I don't know what the motorised version costs but it would definitely be
better. The only trouble with this stuff is that you need to use it fairly
regularly. If it dries out in the roller you have an epic cleanup job.

BTW with the Rollataq device I always applied the glue to the foam board. If
you glue right to the edge of the photo and the photo slips... you'll get glue
on the front as some will have got onto the working surface. I should have
experimented with leaving a margin.

I might leave my glass cutting and dust busting adventures for another day :)

Cheers,
Dave

I think I shall, if I can find it locally! It looks to cost about the
same amount I paid for the Royal Salute -- which was a deal I'll never get
again for as long as I live, I'm sure. One of our club members had it on a
shelf for the past15 years, or so, (he once owned several bars) and offered
to sell it to me for $40. I, of course, jumped on the offer with both feet
 -- rather emphatically.

I've been paying about $20 a bottle for it.

That's not bad at all -- though, I doubt I'd find it that cheap around here.
Kentucky long ago enshrined into law a kickback scheme to line the pockets
of alcohol distributors, which effectively mandates an extra layer of
profit-taking between the consumer and the retailer. It wasn't that bad
until a few years ago, when the state finally passed a liquor sales tax on
 top of it.

If you prefer whiskey with a bit less character,  I'm fond of Tullamore
Dew, which is my favorite blended Irish.

I haven't had much luck with Irish whiskeys, though I've only tasted the
more common ones -- Jameson, Bushmills, etc. I was never much of a whiskey
drinker at all until I discovered Scotch. Before that, I drank mostly beer
and gin. My palate leans decidedly dry.

Unfortunately, I haven't had enough of the good single malts to be able
to judge. I can tell you it's difficult to believe that Royal Salute and
the stuff I usually drink (Johnny Walker, Usher's, etc.) are both
considered Scotch. The difference is as stark as you can possibly
imagine. It's also *completely* different from the 18-year-old Chivas
I've had.

Maybe someday I'll be able to afford good Scotch on a regular basis.
But, for the time being, I'll have to content myself with seizing
whatever opportunities present themselves. Beyond that, all I can say is
that I'll mourn the final sip that comes out of that flagon.

again for as long as I live, I'm sure.

Why not a SATA SSD the size of a CF card?

2012-06-27 Thread Larry Colen
Last night, I was thinking about how one performance limitation that I run up
against the most often is write speed to the storage. My first idea was a
camera grip that had a slot for a laptop SSD drive. My second thought was that
a compact SSD would be better. Even if storage were limited on the initial
generations of the platform, even 128GB at SATA, or better yet STA-3 speeds,
would be so much better than writing to SD cards. We're talking up to
1500-3000 MBPS rather than 30-45:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bit_rates

I expect that in ten years the SATA bandwidth might start proving
claustrophobic again, but it would certainly be a big improvement over SD
cards. Both for the initial write time, and for transferring files to the
computer.

By the next revision of the specification (UHS-II), SD will offer

104 MB/s, which is not that far off, especially from SATA I.

I think a key reason that real SSDs are faster than SD in practice
is that a real SSD operates a bunch of flash chips in parallel. In
fact, that's a difference between high-end and low-end SSDs of the
same capacity and physical size--the teardown photos usually show more
chips on the high-end SSD. So you're not going to get full SSD
performance at CF size, let alone SD size. (Plus there's heat and
power concerns as P.J. points out.)

I've been trying to go running without injuring myself. I had the great idea
that if I brought the K-x and DA40 in a small fanny pack, I'd take a few rest
stops and go easier on my shins. The idea worked too well.

Most of the shots were pretty cliche of stumps, bark, fallen logs etc.
including this one, but it's still kind of nice:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/7452207836/

I found myself wishing I had bought a 43/1.9 when I had the chance. My 31 is a
bit big, and I could have sure used an extra stop today. I was shooting a lot
today at speeds slower than 1/10 second, without even a monopod. If you're

A 7 inch screen? About equivalent to looking at your shots as 5x7
prints. Which are about as cheap as dirt here. And just as much fun to
look at, as far as I'm concerned.

I see my work on my parents' iPad, which is 10 inches I guess, and
that's too small, though it's nice and crisp. I like the high pixel
 density there.

I want to see my work BIG. I want it to cover a wall, but I'll settle
 for 24x36.

If you want to be able to see the whole picture in one eyeful, at a normal
viewing distance a 6x4 is about the right size. Anything bigger means you
are only really looking at segments of the picture and having to scan it
eyebally. If you print bigger then you have to get further away to see the
whole thing.

People do like to look at detail, so printing a bit bigger than 6x4 is
probably reasonable for viewing at normal reading distances, but much else
is essentially pixel-peeping, or behaving like the people in art galleries
who peer really closely as if they're examining the brushwork to the
exclusion of the picture itself.

We may have different definitions of running. I ended up only

beat a 12 minute mile (8 minute click). But I specifically chose the
K-x and DA40 rather than the K-5 and 16-50, though I was wishing for
faster glass and wishing that the 31 weren't so large. I barely
noticed it's weight in my fannypack, though even without the camera
the fannypack flopped around a lot more than I like, I need to see if
one of my others works better. I ended up just carrying the K-x in
my hands.

Definitely not running.

You should be able to *walk* 2.5 miles in half an hour.

Nice bit of selective quoting. You can look at pictures any size you like,
and so can Larry whose 7 screen you poo-pooed. I merely pointed out, in
support of Larry's idea, that the optimum size for viewing under normal
conditions is closer to his 7 than to your preferred 24x36. This provoked
a snarky reply to which I replied snarkily.

However, if you wish to see the whole of your 24x36 picture without
scanning then assuming your eyesight is within normal human parameters you
will need to view it from a distance of about 8', whether you like that or
not. But of course that's up to you.

Now boys, remember that arguing on the internet is like running in the special
olympics.

At the moment, if I'm not at home, I have three possible ways to show off my
photos. Carry around my portfolio books of 8x12s, which I had been doing for a
while, print up and show off a blurb book, show pictures on my first generation
motorola droid.

I mostly show off my blurb books, which are great when it's light, and at about
$.50/page aren't terribly expensive as printing goes. However, it seems that a
lot of the times that someone asks about my photos, I'm someplace that has
crappy light. Some sort of tablet would be an excellent compromise. I'd love
a huge, high definition display, but that might be a bit awkward to carry, and
any device with one would be godawful expensive.

There are some advantages to iPads, and some disadvantages. I suspect that
they have pretty much the same UI as the iPhone. I've tried using them a few
times, and when the iPod touch came out, I really wanted to like it, and have
an excuse to buy it, but the UI just does not work for me. Same thing with the
original macs, I hated the UI, and found it got in the way of getting anything
useful done. OSX is great, I love it, I use it for just about everything but
programming. But, I digress.

The new Nexus 7 looks like a very promising compromise of power and price,
although in a fortnight or so, I'll likely be upgrading my aging droid to an
S3, which should be a big improvement for showing off photos, and will possibly
even be usable for reading ebooks and the like.

sounds like an interesting book, but it's a little hard to find (i did
 request
an interlibrary loan) — but what's his definition of normal viewing
 distance?

he gives a range for normal *reading* distance of 12-16. This is for reading
books. For reading a desktop computer the health safety, ergonomics people
usually talk about 20, or approximately arms-length - you'd have to look at
their sites to get a better definition, and possibly also a bell curve.

However, I don't know why you need a bell curve - you just have to look around
you at a large number of people looking at pictures in every day circumstances
- from books, screens, iPads, art galleries, to get an idea, and your
experience of seeing many humans should give you some idea how limited their
physical variability is - most people's arms are the same length, give or take
a few inches; most people stand about the same distance away from pictures in a
gallery and sit about the same distance away from their computer screen, give
or take a few inches. Of course we can all produce examples of outliers, but
they're, er, outliers, so they don't broadly affect this.

Mante's claim is that the viewing distance should be twice the diagonal of the
picture, ergo the diagonal should be half the viewing distance.

Mante studied at the Bauhaus and although he doesn't give specific references
for his claims, he does say that his aim is to extend to photography the
findings published in the Bauhaus books.

still had my Promaster 70-300 -- an absurdly long focal length for the size of
the room, but it's what I had on the camera when I grabbed it at the last
second and headed out the door on Thursday.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157630283469490/

The first is Bob -- an exceedingly eccentric fellow whose real name is Charlie, but who has
several alter-egos which seem to based solely on what he happens to have on his head that given day, be it a
trucker's cap (Steve), a straw hat (Charlie), or the thoroughly bedraggled hairpiece
he's seen wearing in this image. (The ZipLock bag-as-shirt-pocket is a common accoutrement among all the
alter-egos, BTW.)

The second shot is of Ronnie -- one of the trustees down at the club. As you
can see, he's a little bit skeptical of having his photo taken, but he's a good
sport.

The final image is of a gentleman named Jimmie Moore -- a retired union
electrician whose DNA will likely be preserved by some society dedicated to
human longevity. He'll be 79 years old this year and gets around better than I
do, isn't much of a guitar player or singer, but one hell of an entertainer.
The man can hold forth uninterrupted for hours reeling off toast after ribald
poem after filthy limerick to the delight of the entire room.

The guitar he's playing in the image is a 1957 Gibson J50 that was given to him
in three pieces by a friend and one-time club member whose uncle had fallen on
it in a highly drunken state. That member has since passed away, and Jimmie
decided to take it to a local guitar maker to see if anything could be done
with it. The guy managed to put it back together after hand-making a few pieces
and adding a good deal of TLC in the process.

So there you have it. A long-winded explication for three photos. Comments and
critiques are welcome.

I don't seriously suggest that I (or anyone) would prefer to hold

a snarky reply to which I replied snarkily.

However, if you wish to see the whole of your 24x36 picture without
scanning then assuming your eyesight is within normal human parameters you
will need to view it from a distance of about 8', whether you like that or
not. But of course that's up to you.

I have to wear reading glasses and I have the inverse problem - some things
are too close for me to see properly without my glasses, and too far to see

I suppose a different pair of reading glasses would just shift the problem

that is too far for me to see without my glasses, and too close for me
to see with them. And yes, I have progressive lenses.

sounds like an interesting book, but it's a little hard to find (i did
 request
an interlibrary loan) — but what's his definition of normal viewing
 distance?

he gives a range for normal *reading* distance of 12-16. This is for reading
books. For reading a desktop computer the health safety, ergonomics people
usually talk about 20, or approximately arms-length - you'd have to look at
their sites to get a better definition, and possibly also a bell curve.

However, I don't know why you need a bell curve - you just have to look
around you at a large number of people looking at pictures in every day
circumstances - from books, screens, iPads, art galleries, to get an idea,
and your experience of seeing many humans should give you some idea how
limited their physical variability is - most people's arms are the same
length, give or take a few inches; most people stand about the same distance
away from pictures in a gallery and sit about the same distance away from
their computer screen, give or take a few inches. Of course we can all
produce examples of outliers, but they're, er, outliers, so they don't
 broadly affect this.

Mante's claim is that the viewing distance should be twice the diagonal of
the picture, ergo the diagonal should be half the viewing distance.

Mante studied at the Bauhaus and although he doesn't give specific references
for his claims, he does say that his aim is to extend to photography the
findings published in the Bauhaus books.

 B

This sounds about right, quite honestly, and fits with my own
observations, certainly for *reading*. And I think that to avoid
tiring the eyes out reading, that 2:1 distance/diagonal viewing angle
calc is probably on the money.

And yet Mante's claim would seem to not apply to the viewing of
images. Else how to explain the enormous number of art and photography
books with larger dimensions. I have a whole bunch of photo books in
my own small collection that are on the order of 10x13 (16+
diagonal) that contain images near that size. One of my faves, a
Lillian Bassman book, features mostly full-bleed and even
gutter-straddling images. I don't hold these books 32 away to view
them. I read them at arms-length, and I can assure you that I have
industry standard arms.

I don't think that all these photo/art books are outliers. I contend
that folks like larger images.

I also don't think that anyone hiring a photographer would be
satisfied being handed a portfolio of 4x6 or 5x7 shots. I'm pretty
sure they'd expect to see 8x10 or so. I think that, as a sales tool,
4x6 images would be rather lacking. They're fine for holiday snaps
though.

I have a gripe with art and photo books that are too big to hold and read
comfortably. I think that their size is not so much a result of readers'
preferences, but of some sort of arms race for prominence in the bookstore, and
coffee table impressiveness at home. A lot of them are probably also bought as
presents and may seem more impressive as such when they are bigger than the
room they're supposed to go in.

I still have quite a few overlarge photo books myself. If I want to look at the
photos I can only buy the book that's on offer - I don't normally get a choice
of an oversize book or one designed for normal humans. But the books I take off
the shelf most often are the ones that fit on my lap without breaking my
thighs, and don't require the sort of lectern that only cathedrals should have.

I also suspect that smaller books sell more. In the shops where I lurk the
colossal books get a lectern to themselves, but there's only one copy and
nobody buys it even when it ends up in the sale bin. On the other hand the
little books have plenty of shelf space which suggests a decent turnover.

There's a similar bloat tendency in the IT book market, where in my experience
the books tend to be useful in inverse proportion to their size, although the
shops are filled with fat books that contain nothing but froth, for dummies.

I also don't think that anyone hiring a photographer would be satisfied
being handed a portfolio of 4x6 or 5x7 shots. I'm pretty sure they'd

SanDisk is a good brand, but there are 2.5 reasons why I am rather
unhappy with them at the moment:
1. They created a complete mess with their card naming (Ultra, extreme,
HD Video, Extreme Pro, earlier: game card, this, that ..) which is
confusing, inconsistent, and not explained even on their own website.
About half a year ago, I spoke with their customer support, and even
they had problems giving a straight forward explanation what name
corresponds to what rating/speed.

2. Out of all cards, it was the one from SanDisk where the lock slide
fell off (in the locked position). So that card is unusable.

This is a common mistake, any time the slide falls out of the card, the
card is locked no matter what position the slide /was/ in. It's a
simple mechanical switch. Not connected to anything else in the card,
just like the write protect tab on an old fashioned 3 1/4 inch floppy
disk. If the tolerances aren't too tight, you can simply tape over the
notch and most devices will read and write to the card just fine. I had
two Sandisk cards loose their tabs and ended up using old fashioned
Scotch(tm) magic transparent tape. The only device that gave me trouble
was the K20D. The card slot was just too tight to accept the card with
tape on it.

(and I don't want to send it to SanDisk, as I cannot erase the private
photos I have on it.)

2.5. When I was talking with their customer support about having that
card replaced under warranty, it took ridiculous amount of time going
in circles with one person, and then the next person (supervisor)
agreed relatively quickly, asking to send photos of the damaged card.
But then there was a silence for more than two weeks.
And then after my reminder, they asked to provide additional information
(photos of the card being destroyed).

They are sure putting you through the ringer for a piece that would cost them
more to ship to you than produce it. If you didn't have something personal on
it, that's another US$0.50 to ship it.

How about a program from all of the chip makers that you bring it back to where
you bought it for a swap. Let the store bear the cost of testing it for Sandisk
or whomever.

That's why I buy such accessories from Amazon or Costco. No questions, exchange
for a new one or money back (with receipt).

Glad you told me about the purity, I'd have thought the color was due to
the Canadian Government enhancing the lake with Cyan aniline dye.

The second is more dramatic, the first is a bit better balanced. I like
the second better. Drama in my landscapes not in my women, I always say.

This is a common mistake, any time the slide falls out of the card, the card
is locked no matter what position the slide /was/ in.  It's a simple
mechanical switch.  Not connected to anything else in the card, just like
the write protect tab on an old fashioned 3 1/4 inch floppy disk.  If the
tolerances aren't too tight, you can simply tape over the notch and most
devices will read and write to the card just fine.  I had two Sandisk cards
loose their tabs and ended up using old fashioned Scotch(tm) magic
transparent tape.  The only device that gave me trouble was the K20D.  The
card slot was just too tight to accept the card with tape on it.

They are sure putting you through the ringer for a piece that would cost
them more to ship to you than produce it. If you didn't have something
personal on it, that's another US$0.50 to ship it.

How about a program from all of the chip makers that you bring it back to
where you bought it for a swap. Let the store bear the cost of testing it
 for Sandisk or whomever.

That's why I buy such accessories from Amazon or Costco. No questions,
exchange for a new one or money back (with receipt).

As I understand it, the best viewing distance has been suggested to be one

In the past couple of years I've noticed a very annoying trend with viewing
distance.  In too many situations there tends to be a range that is too far for
me to see without my glasses, and too close for me to see with them.  And yes,
I have progressive lenses.
