Previous job, we had a young Canadian intern working for us, who

Totally unrelated. Said intern also introduced me to Akinyele. I'm not

That's not too bad for a gallery presentation. I dislike how the

prefer it going away on its own. Can't have it all I suppose.

Nice wildflowers, but they could really use a bump of mid-tone
contrast. Fairly blah as-is.

Subject: GESO: Hummingbird - 8/7/12

This little guy appears to being growing accustomed to my presence near
the feeder. It won't be long before I can park myself right under it and
get some great close-ups. There are others who visit the yard, so I'm
considering getting another feeder or two.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157630955110246/

Taken with my K20D fitted with the Promaster 70-300 f/4-5.6

And, yes, I've been told not to use the nectar with the red dye, so I'll
go to plain simple syrup when this nectar runs out. I just assumed that,
being labeled as hummingbird nectar it was OK to use for hummingbird
nectar.

Comments and suggestions welcome as always!

Re: OT - Cloudy in iCloud - when you entrust your digital live to ...

2012-08-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hi All:

While 2-factor authentication is indeed more secure, it is not a panacea.
It would be a big mistake to set it up and think that you are safe from
now on. (That's in part a response to Tim's question if he should
worry.)

Rather, one should be always thoughtful of how their digital presence
is organized: e.g. if one account is compromised, can that lead
to a chain reaction that would make the damage very broad and deep?
You don't want to keep all eggs in one basket.

Of course, if it is your main e-mail account that is compromised,
the perpetrator would have access to the information about your
financial activity: bank, phone, utility, mortgage bills, etc. -
combined and cross-references, they can reveal a lot of personal
information that may be sufficient to gain access to at least some of
your accounts.
Of course, it's a balance between convenience of having everything
online and paranoia of keeping everything totally unplugged.

You may say: I am making a conscious decision by choosing the
convenience at the cost of the risk of dealing with the consequencies.
That's fine. But even in this case, you can take some precautions.

One possible way that I see is to have 2 separate e-mail accounts:
one that is used for social activities (including Facebook, Linked-in,
etc.) and thus exposed widely, and the other one that is strictly used
for finance-related activity. Of course, - the two accounts should
not be linked or know about each other (via Gmail invitation, e-mail
address book, etc.) It is, indeed security by obscurity,
but in this case, it adds a layer or protection (albeit a thin one).

What falls into a grey area in this schema is the payment services such
as Paypal, Dwolla that use the e-mail address as the public account
number. (Which, in my opinion, is a very bad practice.)
Maybe a solution to that is to use the third, separate account.

As for the 2-factor authentication of Google, - that's again a question
who do you trust? By adding your cell phone number to your e-mail
Google account, you are linking yet another piece of information to your
G-account.
Besides other concerns, Google already knows a lot about you. Do you
trust that a) their information database won't be compromised? and
b) they won't be using that information at some point? [*]
Yes, in this case, the advantages probably outweigh the disadvantages.
But as in any case, what important is that people make a thoughtful
decision based on the information, instead of hiding their heads in the
virtual sand.

-
[*]
Note, that already, some companies have amended their privacy policies
in a weird way. E.g. American Express credit card agreement now says
something like this:
We may try to reach you at any phone number from which you ever called
us, by calling or sending you text messages.
Unlike in Europe, in the US, receiving SMS is not free. Either you pay
for a monthly plan that gives you so many SMS messages, or you pay per
message ($0.20 with Verizon Wireless - for either sending or receiving).
I don't want to receive SMS from AmEx, Google or anybody else, unless
_I_ explicitly want that SMS. ... The same, actually, applies to
phone calls, especially if I am roaming internationally.

That narrows the potential audience for this hack down considerably.

All of them?

What one must realize is that these are just replacement gear for the Pros. A
further 60% are in the hands of the photogs. Someone on that site speculated
11-12 million dollars retail that could be seen and surmised by shelving units
not seen.

There is likely a repair person or two in the back room doing minor repairs.

Someday, maybe, our children will be able to swap gear in the Pentax Pro Gear
Room.

Canon has this store room for CPS members who are credentialed to
shoot the Olympics. Crazy amount of gear

I took a photo class in MPLS MN this weekend. Digital Days. The class
featured young models for indoor outdoor shots. I hadn't brought any
fast glass and used my 55-300 which worked ok on the outdoor shots.

Creativity vs. gear?

2012-08-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

It has been said many times that abundance of equipment can suppress
the [necessity for] creativity. Or, maybe the opposite is correct:
lack of proper equipments boosts up the creativity.

This guy, shooting Olympics with iPhones, has been feature in many
news/blogs:
http://www.wired.com/rawfile/2012/08/covering-the-olympics-with-three-iphones-and-some-binoculars/

Or see it with all photos at once:
http://www.wired.com/rawfile/2012/08/covering-the-olympics-with-three-iphones-and-some-binoculars/?pid=3287viewall=true
Short link: http://goo.gl/bl2Qv

Indeed, some of these photos may not have appeared if the photographer
were sitting in the photographers' row.
(Being in the photographers' row can be dangerous:
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/2012/08/01/photographer-in-focus-with-courtside-crash/
 )
Being challenged by the inferior equipment, he is looking for more
unusual shots.

For example, when my wife takes photos with her PS photo camera
at dance festivals, because of the short flash range, focus/shutter lag,
and other inherent limitations of many PS's, she is looking for shots
that she can take with her camera.
E.g. at one of tango festivals, she did this collection:

Of course, the fact that you have your top-notch DSLR doesn't forbid all
this creativity. But it doesn't stimulate it either.

The question remains open, - does too much gear hinder your creativity?
What do you think?

Igor

PS. My wife made a suggestion for the actual reason why this photographer
decided to use 3 iPhones instead of his 3 (5? 10?) DSLRs:
their office ran out of ponies that carry the heavy photo bags. So, he had
to carry his gear by himself.

Mini-GESO: Silhouettes (3 images)

2012-08-08 Thread Walt Gilbert
Occasionally, I'll see something that's terribly back-lit, but still
strikes me as having the potential to make a reasonably compelling image
as a silhouette. That's happened a couple of times over the past couple
of days, so I thought I'd get some feedback on the images.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157630981430584/

All three were taken with the K20D and Promaster 70-300 4-5.6.

Of the three, I'm more partial to the robin on the fencepost with the
cricket in its beak. Any thoughts as to whether these images work or not
would be appreciated.

Thanks!
