I've thought of that. I even have a couple of old cameras. It's kind of a

Basically, for the same price I could get either a 24" LCD monitor that
also had a HDTV tuner or a 32" HDTV that had an input for computer
video, so I bought the TV.

I do watch a little bit of TV; old programs that I like that I found a

I don't need to think about anything. You're in a public space you may get your
picture taken. I really don't see why that's a problem.

I also don't understand why a distance shot or passerby shot is okay (presuming
they can be identified) but something closer isn't. It's not like I am sucking
the soul out of them.

People who hug in public places obviously don't mind strangers seeing what
they're doing; neither should they mind being photographed.

Regardless of whether I take their photo, they're likely on a security video
anyway...

that's true if your only copy of a file is in the cloud (in which case i'd

you also have a local copy on as many machines as you have, of which you can
(and should) make ordinary backups

i think if you need to count on cloud storage you should probably pay for it;
my low-end hosting account at Dreamhost includes 50GB of file storage with no
extra fees; i can buy more at the same rate as Dropbox Pro, but billed in GB
increments

many other services (e.g. Amazon S3) are available for varying but reasonable
costs, but the convenience varies also — i find Dropbox extremely convenient
for sharing with others and across my devices, and that's what i need the most

Re: Mounting a laser behind K-mount lenses

on 2012-08-19 15:25 Larry Colen wrote

Secondly, I'll want a way to mount one axially behind a k-mount lens. M42
would be sort of easy, just drill two holes on the same axis, one the size of
the laser, one 42mm, and then thread the hole for m42 lenses. I sort of did
this with my current setup which uses an old 50mm Argus C3 lens. This spreads
the beam nicely, but I'd like to be able to change focal lengths to change the
spread of the beam, and I have a much wider range of K-mount than m42 lenses.

no idea about laser sources, but if you'd like the K-mount and immediately
surrounding chassis from an old A3000 i'll send it to you for shipping; it has
a working quick release, and it appears the chassis rear presents a plane which
is square to the light path, which should make it relatively easy to attach
stuff properly to the back

there is also a momentary switch (for the backlight) and a toggle switch (for
the self timer) which both still appear to work

another option you might consider is a bellows unit with K-mount on the front
and M42 (or other) on the back

(if you want to go high-end i have a SMC 100/4 Bellows lens plus Auto-Bellows A
for sale; the male K-mount ring uncouples from the back and a machine shop
could easily fabricate a custom ring to replace it)

pegged at 1.35 million by the law enforcement folk and many tens of thousands

Have you tried playing with the blue saturation and luminosity sliders
in the HSL panel? With pure blue lighting, it's likely that the colors
are out of gamut, resulting in lost detail.

Also, often when it loads a new picture in, set to black and white, at the very
start the picture will have a bit of noise, but a lot more detail, then when
it's done loading/processing it'll snap to much less noise and way less detail,
even though noise reduction is set to zero. Any idea how to tweak it so that
there's a bit less noise reduction happening?

Processing crazy blue saturation in lightroom

2012-08-19 Thread Larry Colen
Trio Garufa played at the local milonga last night. They were light by blue
LED spots.

I'm finding processing the photos to be very challenging. Here are some
examples of various attempts that I've made to process them:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157631149650198/

B&W, "straight color", tweaking the color temperature to bring some of the red
in.

If I crank the exposure high enough that the blue midtones are visible, then
anything close to the highlights are totally blown out. If I try to keep some
tonality in the musicians faces, then everything is darker than I want.

Anybody have any ideas on how to handle this?

I think scan cafe are the ones that ship them off to India for scanning.

I'd say that they are the best choice for getting everything processed in bulk,

There is another aspect of this, which varies from person to person, and that
is how worthwhile it is to spend the effort to get the last bit of performance
out of a particular piece of gear. For example, at some point someone with
$1,000 lying around would do better to buy a K-5 for doing low light
photography, than they would spending the time figuring out how to get the very
last bit of performance out of a K100Dsuper.

In the days of film bodies, the benefits of learning the gear generally
outweighed the benefits of upgrading, at least far more than it does today.
These days, there is a balance, which is a lot harder to pin down, where better
gear may far outweigh marginally better performance out of the gear you have.

Where ever you go be sure to check into the resolution. Way back when, I
used a local service that used Kodak equipment and that resulted in several
resoultions from just enough for the web up to resolution enough for great

Mounting a laser behind K-mount lenses

2012-08-19 Thread Larry Colen
I'm looking for two things.

First an inexpensive, high powered green laser. I bought mine a few years ago,
and I expect that you can get a lot more power for $50 worth of laser now than
you could back then. Has anyone done any shopping for them lately?

Secondly, I'll want a way to mount one axially behind a k-mount lens. M42
would be sort of easy, just drill two holes on the same axis, one the size of
the laser, one 42mm, and then thread the hole for m42 lenses. I sort of did
this with my current setup which uses an old 50mm Argus C3 lens. This spreads
the beam nicely, but I'd like to be able to change focal lengths to change the
spread of the beam, and I have a much wider range of K-mount than m42 lenses.

If there is some sort of a screw mount that I can get adapters for k-mount to
screw mount, that may work. I could also probably get minolta to this screw
mount, or nikon to this screw mount adapters too.

I could, in theory, also have a friend with a machine shop fab me up something
that is the right dimensions to mount a K-mount lens. Or, possibly, drill a
hole, mount a quality back cap in it, and use that to mount a k-mount lens.

Anyways, I thought I'd throw the idea out to see if anyone happens to know of
something that would do this well, for not much money.

A couple of my previous laser calligraphy experiments. Note that my
calligraphy skills are quite lacking.

Just the laser:

I cannot compare with any other service, but I'm quite satisfied with
standard ScanCafe service. Mostly slides and color negatives (35MM) to
date. Just started using their service this year. No failures or other
problems so far. The scans from the few pictures that I've sent them
were good, but the results weren't noticeably (to me) better than I get
running picture scans from my HP 8500 AIO Printer scanner through
Photoshop. No results yet with BW negatives.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean by "muddy".
I did have a stab at an alternative rendering, though, or in one of
the cases, two different ones:

http://www.toralf.net/bilde.php?navn=2012-8-15b

http://www.toralf.net/bilde.php?navn=2012-8-35b

These are actually done much quicker, and with adjustments more like

- Toralf

I must admit, though, that I've never managed to get any scans from
B&W negatives that aren't somewhat flat and dull-looking at first. I
thought I did a reasonable processing job on these, but perhaps I'm a
poor judge of what looks right.

Quote: " Very common. Deadly Poisonous - After eating over a period it has
been known to cause death. "

So probably best not to eat it, but if you want to become Emperor of Rome
you could try feeding it to the incumbent Emperor and see what happens.

PESO: Ugli Fungi

I found this in my yard after two days of rain. I have no idea what it is:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16323254

Apparently, some critter in the yard thought it looked tasty:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=16323272

Comments, and help in identifying these tumorous growths, will be appreciated.
