I just did a test with a 15-second exposure in my darkened living room.
Turning off Noise Reduction meant I could access the preview straight away.
With NR on I get no preview until after the dark frame has been shot (indicated
by the shots-remaining number flashing on the top LCD).

So whoever said K20D may have been right as the dark frame subtraction
definitely can be turned off in the K10D.

I'll compare the images later to see what kind of difference it makes to the
noise :)

Cheers,
Dave

PESO: Rain Garden

2012-09-06 Thread John Sessoms
I had some time to kill yesterday waiting for a photography club meeting
to start. We meet at an arboretum associated with NC State University.
They have a nice little Japanese garden, and I got to thinking how it
might look in one of those old Japanese wood-block prints, with the rain
& fog.

So, I kind of planned this shot out, and then all I had to do was wait
until it rained & scurry over there to take the shot. Which it did this
afternoon.

About rain - I needed it to be raining hard so the rain would show up in
the photo. The hard rain is at the leading edge of the storm. If you're
not ready to move as soon as you hear the first crash of thunder you're
probably going to miss it. Also, if you use fill flash to try to make
the rain pop out, you need to be on trailing curtain sync. Otherwise
your raindrops will look like they're falling upwards.

Standing in the rain, holding the umbrella over the camera & tripod
because I didn't have my rain-sleeves ready.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/7947602716/lightbox/

K20D, DA18-55 II aperture priority @f/22 NIK filters (HDR Pro, Color
Efex Pro & Silver Efex Pro)

Cropped it 12x24 to give it a panoramic feel.

In the end, I had to assist the rain just a little in Photoshop (a whole
lot actually).

My K20D has got some hot pixels or something. There are 2 bright red
dots in exactly the same spot in every frame. They appear to be 1 pixel
each. Plus there's a bright white blob about the size the light in the
garden sculpture. It's pretty easy to locate because it's right in the
middle of a 1 pixel high bright red line that extends from side to side
across the frame.

It's a b**ch cloning the red line out. Content aware fill can't do it,
and if you're not super careful, it just ends up looking like someone
cloned out a red line across the middle of the frame.

I clicked at random (well, not really at random, but let's say at select
few) links in this list. The commentary looked like a pile of bull...
E.g. Fiat Multipla was pretty much revolutionary, as at the size of the
regular footprint they gave you 6 seat car. Not once and not twice I
considered getting Honda FRV which is pretty much the same - 6 seats,
regular size.

And also, these are not worst cars of all times. These are cars produced
by very specific countries that are deemed so. Believe me, in USSR we
produced some good cars. But some others were certainly worth putting in
this list...

Also, your tripod center post should not be extended (at all) if you
are looking for max. stability with a lot of weight on the head.
That means getting a tripod that has the right length of legs for your
height or (where you prefer to work).
Also, if it is an option for what you are shooting, check into using
the self-timer (either short or long) to allow vibrations to dampen
out before the shutter fires.

Buy a tripod that is rated for at least the weight of your heaviest
body/lens combo.

The Arca Swiss mount is by far the most widely used quick release system out
there. They are more robust than the Bogen/Manfrotto system (the ones I'm
familiar with are cast, as opposed to machined on the Arca).

The short answer is that there doesn't seem to be an RC2 head that works a
lot better than what I have. Though the 3911RC2 looks like it would be a
bit more adjustable, also smaller.

It seems that the other standard mount system is the Arca swiss, and that
is likely what I should look at when I'm ready to drop significantly more
money on tripods. This is a very clever hack, allowing use on both RC2

I suspect, however, that for $75 each, I'd be better off just selling off

Horses for courses.

I have a Bogen mini gear head for landscape images as it allows minute

I won't bore the people here with my oft repeated litany of why the AF540 sucks
the smegma from the foreskin of a syphilitic donkey, just take it as a given
that I frequently find myself at odds with it. If, rather than get it to do
what I want, I just let it do what it wants, then it will often put out
something resembling useful amounts of light at a more or less convenient time.
And while I can often get what I want by setting the camera to what I want and
letting the AF540 do its own thing, I also often want a simple manual flash,
with a good range of control, and no preflash. In theory the AF540 will do
this, but in practice, no matter how often I set it to Manual, it will at some
time of its own choosing, set itself back to P-TTL. I've sent it in for repair
at least three times, for both this and a broken hot shoe mount.

It is my birthday, allow me for a day or two, the pleasant fantasy that Pentax
can design and build a flash that is more likely to do what I ask than it is to
fight me every step of the way.

>
> Or: I'd buy two Alien Bees B1600's and a Vagabond portable battery to run 'em.

I've been very happy with my White Lightnings. I have been ecstatic with Paul
C Buff's customer service.

I was recently given some very nifty light modifiers that work with the profoto
flashes. Unfortunately, they are exactly too big to fit on my white lightning.
So, the other day I cut down a bit of ABS end cap, drilled some holes in it and
made an adapter so I could fit the PF light modifiers on the WL. It worked
wonderfully. Until the modeling light melted the ABS.

Oh well, time to come up with a plan B

I find Metz 58 (I have af-1) - considerably better and more flexible
than AF540.
Two main reasons:
1. It works reasonably well in "A" mode.
2. It has the secondary smaller flash in front that is useful for
the situations when you bouncing light off the ceiling.

I haven't used all capabilities of that flash, but these features
are useful. I only wish I could switch the modes (PTTL <--> A) via
a slider/button, as opposed to the menu, and that different modes would
keep their settings (say, for the small front secondary flash) separately.

... yet, P(itiful)TTY says it all.

I'm not sure I totally agree on Pentax flash. I've used a 540 and a
360 controlled remotely from a K-7. I also shoot with Nikon. The
Pentax flash is certainly not as flexible or extensive as the Nikon,
but it's way ahead of most of the others.

I'm a big Pentax fan--I own Pentax gear almost exclusively--which I

I'd put my camera back in a closet and take up another hobby, like I
did in the 1980's. The present state of photo technology is what drew
me back into shooting. Now I can get instant feedback if I need it,
adjust ISO on the fly, post-process (even colour!) sans darkroom ...
[endless list elided]. Film and all its hassles was just not for me. I
guess I'm just another instagram'er at heart.

I'd consider making it your last. :-) The dpreview crowd seem only a
minor step up from YouTube posters sometimes.

I agree, especially new out of the box I want to see a representation
of what I'm getting. I suspect an internal memory issue of some kind.
Depending on how I have it setup to display varying information on the
review screen, it behaves differently, but never consistently. The
return process has already been initiated with Amazon and a new one
should be shipping today.

Well some guys did sincerely try to help and offered suggestions.
Others basically suggested that (my words) 'real photographers
wouldn't have it turned on as they don't need to check their shots'.
And so yes, it didn't really matter.

Of course we never had the luxury with film, but IMO, the best time to
check your shot is immediately after you take it, so that there's
possibly a chance to retake it if things are amiss. I know that's a
crazy notion and I'm just a dumb ass for thinking like that.

Three others were rather condescending. I got in a minor flame war and

I eventually killed auto-review mainly because doing that seems to
improve overall responsiveness. I think the camera has less to do so
it's ready for the next shot quicker. Maybe it just seems that way.

And it's kind of jarring when shooting in low light, say in a jazz
club, to have the preview come on and glare into my face. It can
actually take a few moments to re-accustom my eye to the darkness
after that, and I might lose a shot.

It's trivial to hit the preview button now and then to verify
continued copaceticosity.

I'm always a neophyte at *something*, so I don't tend to alter my
behaviour or settings to try and hide that.

Darken the clouds to make them seem a bit more brooding/threatening.
The human figure in the lower right is a really effective way of
giving it some sense of scale. But you should replace him with a woman
in a long, flowing black dress. ;-)

Yes! That should be a standard part of a landscape photographers kit.
Keep a woman in a long flowing dress with you at all times and many
more photographic opportunities will arise.

Precisely. That's why I never leave home without one -- and,
consequently, why I never leave home.

Re: Questions about tripod heads.

I use a Bogen/Manfrotto 3047 three-way tilt head. It's rock solid, and I
believed rated at 30 pounds or more. I use it with long glass on my car shoots.
It was also my main head when I was shooting with the 6x7 -- sometimes with a
300 mm lens and 2X converter. It's solid and allows the kind of accurate
framing I need for my work. It also has bubble levels, which are more handy
than the caner's digital level. I don't know if it's still in production. I saw
one on ebay when I googled the part number:

Darkened the clouds.  Actually it's now the darker exposure of the
bracketed trio, so you'll notice the figure is slightly different:

I know the figure is now darker (I did dodge him a fair bit, as I did

bit better now.

Here's the original for comparison:
