With NR on I get no preview until after the dark frame has been shot (indicated by the shots-remaining number flashing on the top LCD). So whoever said K20D may have been right as the dark frame subtraction definitely can be turned off in the K10D. PESO: Rain Garden
I had some time to kill yesterday waiting for a photography club meeting to start. We meet at an arboretum associated with NC State University. They have a nice little Japanese garden, and I got to thinking how it might look in one of those old Japanese wood-block prints, with the rain & fog. So, I kind of planned this shot out, and then all I had to do was wait until it rained & scurry over there to take the shot. Which it did this afternoon. About rain - I needed it to be raining hard so the rain would show up in the photo. The hard rain is at the leading edge of the storm. If you're not ready to move as soon as you hear the first crash of thunder you're probably going to miss it. Also, if you use fill flash to try to make the rain pop out, you need to be on trailing curtain sync. Otherwise your raindrops will look like they're falling upwards. Standing in the rain, holding the umbrella over the camera & tripod because I didn't have my rain-sleeves ready. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/7947602716/lightbox/ K20D, DA18-55 II aperture priority @f/22 NIK filters (HDR Pro, Color Efex Pro & Silver Efex Pro) Cropped it 12x24 to give it a panoramic feel. In the end, I had to assist the rain just a little in Photoshop (a whole lot actually). My K20D has got some hot pixels or something. There are 2 bright red dots in exactly the same spot in every frame. They appear to be 1 pixel each. Plus there's a bright white blob about the size the light in the garden sculpture. It's pretty easy to locate because it's right in the middle of a 1 pixel high bright red line that extends from side to side across the frame. It's a b**ch cloning the red line out. Content aware fill can't do it, and if you're not super careful, it just ends up looking like someone cloned out a red line across the middle of the frame. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Interesting and unconventional shot - I like both but this second one more. The darker skies in the upper left somewhate balance the dark patch of trees in the lower right, and there is less of a sense of being pulled out of the frame. Also, your tripod center post should not be extended (at all) if you are looking for max. stability with a lot of weight on the head. That means getting a tripod that has the right length of legs for your height or (where you prefer to work). Also, if it is an option for what you are shooting, check into using the self-timer (either short or long) to allow vibrations to dampen out before the shutter fires. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Questions about tripod heads.
Buy a tripod that is rated for at least the weight of your heaviest body/lens combo. The Arca Swiss mount is by far the most widely used quick release system out there. They are more robust than the Bogen/Manfrotto system (the ones I'm familiar with are cast, as opposed to machined on the Arca). I won't bore the people here with my oft repeated litany of why the AF540 sucks the smegma from the foreskin of a syphilitic donkey, just take it as a given that I frequently find myself at odds with it. If, rather than get it to do what I want, I just let it do what it wants, then it will often put out something resembling useful amounts of light at a more or less convenient time. And while I can often get what I want by setting the camera to what I want and letting the AF540 do its own thing, I also often want a simple manual flash, with a good range of control, and no preflash. In theory the AF540 will do this, but in practice, no matter how often I set it to Manual, it will at some time of its own choosing, set itself back to P-TTL. I've sent it in for repair at least three times, for both this and a broken hot shoe mount. I'm not sure I totally agree on Pentax flash. I've used a 540 and a 360 controlled remotely from a K-7. I also shoot with Nikon. The Pentax flash is certainly not as flexible or extensive as the Nikon, but it's way ahead of most of the others. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Thu, Sep 6, 2012 at 2:36 PM, Igor Roshchin wrote: > > > Thu Sep 6 15:20:49 EDT 2012 > Mark Roberts wrote: > >> Larry Colen wrote: >> >> >On Sep 6, 2012, at 9:12 AM, Darren Addy wrote: >> > >> >> This morning Ricehigh posted HIS list of guesses (with degree of >> >> certainties) >> >> http://ricehigh.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-9-things-that-pentax-is-to-be.html >> > >> >It will be interesting to see how close he is to the truth. I'm a big Pentax fan--I own Pentax gear almost exclusively--which I guess makes me a non-rational self-flagellating fanboi, but I would recommend you away from a Pentax flash, new or not. If I had back the cash I sunk into two AF540's and an AF160, I'd buy three or four Vivitars or other inexpensive manual flashes *and* a van-load of modifiers. Or: I'd buy two Alien Bees B1600's and a Vagabond portable battery to run 'em. Pentax will never catch up to Nikon's system, and even if they do, it's way too expensive and underpowered for what you get. I use these gadgets because it's what I have and I can't afford new stuff, but I'm so much wiser now. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: September PUG is Up!!
The ones that really strike me are: Winter Solitude by Eric A. Kantchev I like the serenity of this image. I wish I knew where it was. Very pleasing. At The Helm by Steve Sharpe Nice action and composition. Good choice on monochrome. A Walk in the Park by Patrick Temmerman Love the monochrome, the grain, the composition. Everything. Lost by Bruce Walker My favorite of the month. It conjures up many emotions. Did she lose something or is she lost? And why is she wearing a top made of yellow sticky notes? :) It has a rather surreal feeling to it. Re: Questions about tripod heads.
I use a Bogen/Manfrotto 3047 three-way tilt head. It's rock solid, and I believed rated at 30 pounds or more. I use it with long glass on my car shoots. It was also my main head when I was shooting with the 6x7 -- sometimes with a 300 mm lens and 2X converter. It's solid and allows the kind of accurate framing I need for my work. It also has bubble levels, which are more handy than the caner's digital level. I don't know if it's still in production. I saw one on ebay when I googled the part number: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bogen-Manfrotto-3047-Tripod-Monopod-Head-great-condition-/200808300847?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec11b812f On Sep 6, 2012, at 5:13 AM, Larry Colen wrote: > I'm shocked that I haven't been deluged with suggestions, not to mention a > list of every tripod head that people have owned since 1964. > > I've been continuing to do research > > Here's one that is rated at 11lbs, so it's probably a little sturdier, and it > has a wider range of motion and is only $70, the 391rc2: > http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/602409-REG/Manfrotto_391RC2_391RC2_Junior_3_Way_Pan_Tilt.html > > > If I were looking at ball heads, I'd be tempted by 327rc2: > http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?sku=680140&Q=&O=&is=REG&A=details > > I suspect, however, that if I wanted substantially better performance than > what I have, I'd need to go to another quick release system and therefore > replace both ball and pan-tilt heads. > > > On Sep 5, 2012, at 8:19 PM, Larry Colen wrote: > >> I've got a couple of Manfrotto ball heads, and a three axis head, a >> Manfrotto 804RC2.
