2012-11-12 Thread Krisjanis Linkevics
Thanks all for commenting. No hair clippers needed, just another friendly
reminder to leave fingerpaint in front of the more permanent stuff every time.
She did help cleaning up but as any parent of a 2-3year old will know, that is
something that makes cleanup a couple times harder and more time-consuming but
should be there as a learning experience. As to whether to have coffee before
or after - having coffee after the cleanup minimizes the affected area a great
deal, in fact, if you don't want to clean paint off of beds, curtains, cats,
carpets, walls, door handles, floor, cupboards, toys, computers, windows,
siblings and yourself (the list obviously can go on and on), you should really
get to it as soon as possible :)

Many years ago, while planning my first visit to Alaska - a month long
backpack trip with my then 5 year old son & wife, centered around 2 weeks in
Denali National Park - I investigated having a weapon with me knowing full
well that we would be in Grizzly bear country.

Some of my findings -
A gun of any kind is not legally allowed in any U.S. National Park
You can't legally transport a gun thru Canada
You had better be a damm good marksman, with nerves of steel, if you expect
to immobilize a Grizz at close range with any hand held pistol/rifle.
Better to adhere to the known 'rules' about travel in bear country and not
be caught unaware.

We did have a great experience on our month long trip in Alaska, did see
many bears & ran into a guy in the park with a sawed off shotgun that he
kept slung over his shoulder who advised it was only to stun a bear if/when
he ran into one.

used Skandinavia as an example of a system they didn't want :-)

Just compare The US to Scandinavia ...

Scandinavia = Denmark; Finland; Norway; Sweden (Numbers from OECD):

Healthcare cost as percent of GDP:
US 17.4% - Denmark 11.5%; Finland 9.2%; Norway 9.2% Sweden 10%
Healthcare cost per capita:
US $7,960 - Denmark $4,348; Finland $3,226; Norway $5,352; Sweden

Life expectancy at age 65 (Males):

Percentage of persons living with less than 50% of median

Re: Epson 2450 on Win7 64 bit

2012-11-12 Thread Paul Stenquist
I ran into a similar problem with my Epson 3200 scanner on recent Mac OS. Epson
claims to have drivers for new OS options, but they don't work at all. Vuescan
works on Mac independent of the Epson driver, and it solved the problem to a
degree. But it was easier to achieve good scans of transparencies and negatives
with the old Epson software. Vuescan's adjustment capabilities appear to be
extensive, but in practice they offer little fine control. But clunky software
is better than no software.

Scanners seem to be the things given the least priority when it comes
to driver updates. My last scanner was still working fine when I had
to abandon it due to driver incompatibility.

Like Paul says, try Viewscan (download the free trial).

Jostein is probably right.

This lens:

I used to own it - it's effectively a continuously expanding bellows
lens with amazing magnification. Has to be used with ring flash really
(which I had) for some interesting shots.

Viz:

The entire fly was 4mm long!!

Sheep's wool on barbed wire. Broad daylight in the field, flash and
stopped right down, hence black b/g.

Quite a specialist lens - essential if you're into photographing the
smaller bugs on the back of the normal bugs!!

2012-11-12 Thread Darren Addy
Reminds me of a post I saw over the weekend that suggested removing
the front lens element of any old lens to turn it into a macro
(presumably with a maximum focusing distance, per this discussion).
They were doing it with an 18-55mm kit lens. Not sure if that strategy
would work for many/most lenses, but it does give one something to try
with those ubiquitous valueless lenses that one tends to accumulate.

Interesting.

I've been using VueScan since 2000 ... the original software for my
Polaroid SprintScan and then Minolta Scan Dual II were both so bad it
wasn't funny, and VueScan has always done a great job. I have driven
all my scanners, including the now-ancient Epson 2450, with VueScan
for years and find it to be far better than almost everything else
I've tried.

I've found Vuescan's adjustment parameters to be non-linear and clumsy. For
example, adjusting "curve high" for a transparency scan may produce almost no
change at all through much of the scale, then at a certain point it goes over
the cliff. Epson's software didn't provide as many adjustment parameters, but
those offered were linear and worked well.

Oh, I agree: it's a lot of work to understand and use VueScan. I've
had many conversations with the author about the UX, which is still
clumsy after dozens of revisions.

But I guess after 12 years of using it extensively and I'm comfortable
with its quirks ... and they're less frustrating than the lack of
function I find in other scanning apps. At this point, I have configs
for all the stuff that I do, so I just load the config and scan. :-)

Re: Which lens(es) has(ve) a MAXIMUM focusing length?

2012-11-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

Thanks you, Jostein and Cotty for the information.
I knew that some PDMLers would know.

It's indeed an interesting lens, - Cotty, those shots are just great.
I wish Pentax had something comparable...

I would be hesitant..
Darren: just because the zoom will loose capability of focusing to the
infinity, it doesn't mean it would focuse well up-close...

PESO: Local Club Scene

2012-11-12 Thread Walt
So, I took this shot with my K20D and the AF 50/1.4 at ISO 800,
wide-open in very low light:

I thought it was a pretty good shot, but just now noticed the hot pixels.

Is the pixel-mapping relatively trouble-free?

Thanks!

Joel's big book

There is in fact some Pentax content, too

And no, I'm not a huge fan of Bruce Gilden either.
