Re: PESO: Cowgirl Poetry

2013-06-22 Thread Darren Addy
I want to slightly amend my earlier comment. This is a pleasing image,
but the focus is off significantly. The reason it still works is
because some softness can be pleasing in portraiture, but if you look
at the stones at her feet, the tree bark and the vegetation behind the
subject you can see that the focal plane is behind the tree. Not sure
if this was manually focused or autofocused, but you might want to
diagnose where the problem lies.

I ~might~ crop just a bit off the left. That space does nothing and
getting her a bit more off-centre would make things even more interesting
imho. Peel just a bit (equal amounts to maintain the "north/south" balance

I think that might be effective, but hell, it's a wonderful photo as is.

I visited a prime dragonfly location yesterday, but the cool temps,
gusty winds and overcast skies did not make for a high volume shoot. I
got 3 nice shots which are here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php?blog=2

Permalink:

The last shot on the post - the Bluet Damselfly - is a departure for me
because it is a focus stacked  composition of 16 separate shots. This
was compiled in Photoshop. The focus stacking tool there had seemed to
be useless to me because it was such a  PITA to manually stack images as
layers in a single file -but I finally stumbled on a webpage that
explains how to use bridge to open multiple files and then make them
just layers of one file in Photoshop - ah, life is good. I can see doing
more focus stacking in the future - it worked pretty well in the field
yesterday.

C&C appreciated.

I think it is a lovely portrait, just as it is.

Next in the series, I might have had her put her right hand behind
her, in the small of her back. Then with the same pose have her look
up at the camera. Then perhaps crop in closer to a bit more than a
head & shoulders shot. I can see a whole series of things with slight
changes as we go along. Nice use of the light and you are to commended
for the height of the camera off the ground for this shot. It wouldn't
be as effective if you had been standing and shooting down at her.
Well done.

2013-06-22 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Igor Roshchin :

Brian,

That's a great photo!
Before I saw other people's (and your own) comments, my first reaction
was: "That's a photo worth going on a trip to the US".

Thanks, Igor.

The Alamosa area proved to be one of the more interesting places we
visited. We weren't expecting much (we only booked to stay there
because it's the closest town to the Great Sand Dunes NP), but the
landscape around the town is stunning.

Thanks to all who looked and/or commented. It seems that Jack and I
were the only ones who had some misgivings about the image. I was a
bit concerned that HDR Efex had 'over-cooked' it a bit. I still may
do some work on it to reduce the intensity of the colour of the
foreground (but I will keep the original version, Bruce :-)> ).

Cheers

Brian

I had an HDC calendar with a couple of his landscape photos in it.
They were brilliant. Made me wonder who made his prints for him as I

He would have been ideally suited to an internet photography list.

The French delight in things that the Anglo-saxon nations find baffling. Here
is what the writer Colette had to say about a zoo in Normandy:

"At Cleres in the zoo-park it is easy to lose the melancholy feeling of
inevitability".

Vive l'exception française! Dis-je.

Re: TYTimes blog: A lost interview with HCB

2013-06-22 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Love the guy. I tend to agree with much of what he says, or at least understand
where he's coming from.

He always considered himself a surrealist who happened to use a camera to
realize his vision (I hesitate to use the term "art").

Towards the end of his life he stopped shooting altogether (except "snapshots"
for personal purposes). He drew, sketched, painted. The camera was no longer
any use to him.

Hey, I can see why he says what he does about photography schools and
photojournalism. Geez, he invented himself as he went along. He was pure
spontaneity with a camera. You can't teach that. And even if you could it
wasn't there to teach when he was shooting.

He might have felt differently were he a landscape or nature photographer, but
he never could be those, could he?

He always had a knack for being where the action was, but not to capture it as
newsworthy event. That was secondary. The event, like the camera, was a means
of expressing his surrealism.

I probably am not expressing myself well (probably?) but I totally get him. And
I mostly agree although I recognize that much of what he says applies only to
him and not the general public or other photographers.

Cheers,
frank

There is an odd "type 2" M28 that appears to be an A lens in all
respects, except lacking the "A" setting and connections which gives

Hi!

I've sent an inquiry to CRIS a week ago but no response so far. I'm not
buildin' up any hopes though.

Meanwhile I risked to use this camera for another shoot at Galia's
school. Shot 140 or so frames, most with flash, a dozen or so in rapid
machine gun mode (fast continuous). It just worked - AF, metering, and
everything.

I am inclined to just declare that the incident I reported earlier was
an oopsie and not a sign of any impending sky-fall.

On I go with what I have - I don't feel like I need anything at the
moment - Sigma lens is great, Metz flash is wonderful, my Pentax primes
on Ricoh GXR-M module are excellent. I only need to find time to do
actual shooting, besides being asked to shoot on occasion.

Re: Lightroom

2013-06-22 Thread Boris Liberman
I've LR since the day it could have been bought here... Each major (like
the first digit in version number) upgrade brings among other things new
processing engine. Further, the old ones are still available. This is
alone a good reason for upgrading to the latest version.

Speaking of which, I should take steps towards getting me LR 5.0, I suppose.

On 6/21/2013 7:00 PM, George Sinos wrote:

For me, the new process engine was enough reason to upgrade to 4. the

The healing brush eliminates a need to jump to photoshop and back.

All of the other improvements were frosting on the cake.

At $79, it's likely to be the least expensive purchase that will
actually help you improve your photos and reduce your post processing
time.

Re: New camera

2013-06-22 Thread Boris Liberman

Playing devil's advocate here.

But, Thomas, if you only need a camera body to put behind your 35 mm
prime, then may be the likes of Ricoh GXR with the 33/2.5 (aka 50 macro)
lensor module would suit you. It is not AF speed devil, obviously, but
given that it shares the sensor with K-x, K-r and several other cameras
- it does produces wonderful photographs with just a small portion of
size, weight and general bulk of DSLR, no matter how small the DSLR
might be.

For me there are a few options.

1st, I get the new K-500, which should be a nice upgrade to my K-m.
And should be cheap to get.

2nd, I get an K-50, has some enhancements to the K-500 like an
electronic level but it is more expensive.

3rd, I get a K-30, it should be cheaper now and the difference to the
K-50 seems minimal for my taste.

My plan is actually to get rid of most of my equipment, I have not
used my flash for while, I don't use my Kit lense and only my tripod
is sometimes useful.

So I really just need a body to go with my 35 mm prime lense.

What do you think?

Hey Walt, the crop (or lack thereof) isn't a "flaw". You just haven't tried it
yet on this photo.

Yeah "cropping in the camera" is most often preferred but not always possible.

The crop I'm proposing isn't a drastic one and should be very do-able without
screwing up anything. But who knows, it might not work and you'll prefer this
framing.

Looks like the crop is the biggest flaw in the image -- though the lack
of softness in the grass is something I wish I'd picked up on before, as
well. So, the shot still needs a bit of work, but I do like the mood I
was able to capture.

As for your birds, bikes, beasts and blokes, I like the work you're

Actually the 1.7x AF adapter. Makes for a 510mm focal length and I'd
have to go back and look at the original file, but IIRC that was the
middle third of the frame. Distance was maybe ~25 ~30 yards, you can
read that as meters and it's probably about as accurate, which doesn't
sound like much, but when you're photographing song bird sized objects
it's a long ways.

focus plane back.
I see what you're talking about, now. Don't know why I didn't notice it
in post-processing. I reckon I need to soften that grass up a bit more.

BTW, suggestion for something to try: attach a small piece of fine,
sheer nylon stocking over the lens with an elastic band. Adds a unique
textured diffusion to the image.

Cool idea! I'll give that a shot sometime.

I think that Stan's comments re the framing are good. Try cropping so
the tree becomes the LH frame.

I don't agree about the necessity to see the subject's eye. A profile
portrait is perfectly valid and her downward gaze suggests we're
catching a private moment-- maybe wistful thoughts? -- maybe dreamy
thoughts which support the dreamy look of the shot.
That's precisely the mood I was going for. Maybe with a little more
softening on the grass and cropping I can get rid of the distracting
elements to bring the whole thing around a little better.

BTW -- I picked up a softbox yesterday, and a mount that will allow me
to put my flash unit on a tripod. I didn't have quite enough money for a
bona fide light stand, but I figure a tripod will do for the time being.

I'll offer a couple of things to think about for next time.
First, I am bothered by the open space to the left of the tree. I think the
composition might have been a little stronger if the young lady were not so
centered in the image, if the left edge were cropped substantially. Better done
in the camera angle at the time; cropping now might leave a too weirdly
proportioned shot. Though you could also take some from the top to balance . . .
Second, from my own experience and from the suggestions periodically received
from Waller, Sullivan and others, in wildlife photography the eye is the thing.
If a critter's eye(s) is/are sharp and detailed then you are well on the way to
an appealing photo. I think this is true of people portraiture as well. In this
shot, because the young lady's eyes are not visible, it is hard to connect with
her. If she were looking up a little, towards the camera, I think it would be
stronger.

It would be very convenient for me if it were coming out now, as I'm
actively shopping. Although, it is actively convenient for my pocketbook
that I am constrained to looking at a K-5II for under $1,000 rather than
something that will likely cost twice that.

M 200mm f4.0.

I dunno, maybe 10 feet away? Maybe less. I gotta get pretty close for the birdy
close-ups I get. Have to very stealthy. Well, not stealthy because I'm often in
the open, more that I have to be very slow, quiet and deliberate. And be
prepared for the little guys to flit off before I get the shot I want.

But some days I manage a keeper or two if I'm lucky. Other days (like today),
nothing. Oh well, day not half over yet. Left the Lake, heading downtown for
urban grit. Different approach required. ;-)

Thanks for the comment, Walt. And thanks to all who looked and commented. Much

RE: PESO: Cowgirl Poetry

2013-06-22 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
1) You are my hero. I'm taking bird, bike, beast and bloke photos (and not
"bird" in the English slang sense) and here you are hanging around with
beautiful young women taking beautiful photos.

2) Like this a lot. Yeah, seeing her eyes would be nice, but that would be a
different photo (yes, there's frank stating the obvious again). My point is,
this works and creates (or should I say "captures") great mood. Pose, outfit,
background, light all work together here.

I ~might~ crop just a bit off the left. That space does nothing and getting her
a bit more off-centre would make things even more interesting imho. Peel just a
bit (equal amounts to maintain the "north/south" balance you have now) off the
top and bottom so you keep the same frame dimensions you have now.

I think that might be effective, but hell, it's a wonderful photo as is.

frank

Yesterday we took our long-anticipated hot air balloon ride outside Philly.  We
launched at ~0630, on a cool and clear morning with some mist and high clouds.
1:20 and about 9 miles later the pilot dropped us quickly but gently into a
remarkably small suburban yard, threading between trees and power lines.
Impressive.

Six passengers and the pilot were stuffed into a space about 5 x 6 ft--cozy.  I
had just enough room to turn 90 degrees and change lenses.

Photographically the trip was challenging:  since quarters were so tight and we
stayed fairly close to the ground (it was calm above ~1000 ft, as the other
balloon learned the hard way), I mostly used my 10-17 fisheye.  The wide field
of view was nice in the cramped quarters, but the distortion was sometimes
troublesome.  This especially affected shots of the balloon above us--it is a
beautiful sight, having this gigantic colorful sunlit gasbag above one, but the
distortion makes it look about the size of a beach ball.

Enough blather!  The gallery is here:

Comments much appreciated!

Cheers,

Rick

Re: PESO: Cowgirl Poetry

2013-06-22 Thread Bruce Walker
Walt, I love the mood, the light and the girl's casual pose. But while
the soft-focus lends a dreamy air, I'm bothered by the sharp, in-focus
grass a few feet beyond the subject. I think that soft-focus works
best when the entire scene is diffuse rather than merely shifting the
focus plane back.

BTW, suggestion for something to try: attach a small piece of fine,
sheer nylon stocking over the lens with an elastic band. Adds a unique
textured diffusion to the image.

Re: buying a camera from Canada

2013-06-22 Thread P.J. Alling
In the past, Pentax, and other manufactures, sometimes had different
warranty arrangements with based on country. In the USA if a camera was
sold with a without a USA warranty i.e. not by the official importer you
really had no recourse to the importer if something went wrong. Such
cameras were referred to as gray market. The importer wasn't required
to honor the warranty. Now that Pentax USA is a direct subsidiary of
Pentax Japan, in the US at least, that seems to have changed. The
situation may still apply in other countries.

Thanks, Bob!

The gentle breeze was carrying us toward those towers (the Limerick nuclear

The scene reminded me of the towers at Didcot looming over the beautiful

2013-06-22 Thread Ralf R. Radermacher
Usually well-informed French magazine Réponses Photo has a short piece
on the K-50 and the K-500. But the really interesting bit of information
comes at the very end of the article:

"We would have hoped for some more audacity. But let's wait a little, as
it might well be that the end of the year will have a nice surprise in
store for us, in the semi-pro range, somewhere between the K-5II and the
645D..."

"A" glass does not fit the "M" package. The glass carrier system is
entirely different.

Flying into Milan and then hiking around the Italian Riviera for a
week, followed by a week of hiking in the Dolomites. I was hoping to
catch the World Superbike Championship race at Autodromo Enzo e Dino
Ferrari (Imola) on the 30 but logistically we can't make that happen:(

I've sent a note to the place in San Diego I was pointed to earlier today.

Even if I lose shake reduction, if I can get he sensor straightened, and
get it converted to IR, that would be worth a bit of money. Especially
since with live view I could use it as an IR only camera if need be.

> You could then send your camera directly to them.

In a few weeks, several of my coworkers will be returning to Bangalore,
so I could probably convince one of them to ship it to one of those
repair places for me.
