Dan, you say:

> pay the costs of running the "free" websitre...

I think you misunderstand Bob's point, Dan. There is a very strange mixing of
apples and oranges in what you say. The problem is that there are two different
kinds of users for photo-viewing (or music-listening) sites. There are users
who store stuff on a site for others to look at (listen to, whatever). And
there are users who come and view/listen or otherwise enjoy the stored goodies.
Some sites charge people to store stuff, some sites charge viewers/listeners to
view/hear the stored stuff. photonet apparently does both. It charges you to
use the site to store stuff, and then it charges me (by imposing ads on me) to
look at the stuff you've stored. The site I use to store stuff charges me; I
would drop them in a heartbeat if they started to charge people to look at my
stuff (or if they started imposing ads on my viewers, which amounts to the same
thing.) I bear the cost of storing/hosting my photos and I don't expect others
to then have to "pay" to view the hosted images.

So, photonet has its business model which involves getting you to pay them for
the privilege of them using your photos to draw me to the site so they can push
ads in my face and make money if I were to click-through to an advertiser. That
is ok, I can ignore the ads. If the ads (or other photonet slowness) delays
loading a requested photo for any appreciable time, (i.e., 1-2 sec) that is ok
also - I just click Close and go on with my life. I have had enough
fail-to-load-promptly experiences with the photonet site that I will usually
avoid even clicking on a link that will take me there. If I needed to go to
the site to see shots of the local Rotary Club picnic, I would probably do so
and not give the ads and delays a second thought. But if I have no need to go
to the site other than to view and maybe comment on someone's photo, then I'll
usually instead view and comment on someone else's photo which is stored on a
more accessible site.

I'm glad I continued reading the thread before hitting "send" as I pretty much
wrote the same thing as you. It pisses me off quite a lot. I usually just
carry on reading the list and open any new links in another tab, then come back
to the stalled one later and retry. If it still fails after a few attempts I
give up.

When the ads do load I find them extremely distracting and they often clash
with the photo being presented. I deal with that by scrolling enough to make
them disappear off the top of the screen.

Dave

I assume it's uncropped, a super moon is only going to be 6% or so

shot with super telephotos.

I like the centered placement of the roses. Nicely sharp and great color and

paw week 25 super moon plus another

2013-06-23 Thread Christine Aguila
The first two are this week and last. I forgot to post last week and I changed
last week's photo. My super moon doesn't look overly super in size, but the
lake front was the best vantage point from where I live. We just did a quick
run to the lakefront, snapped a few shots, and headed home. Very cloudy
tonight as we had a bit of rain earlier.

Re: New camera

2013-06-23 Thread Boris Liberman
Thomas, it's hard for me to tell, without knowing where you live and
what shops are available to you, but prices to Ricoh GXR system went
down not long time ago.

Consider these prices:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/760802-REG/Ricoh_170393_GR_Lens_A12_50mm.html
- USD 479 - the module I wrote about.

http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20570836.html - USD 119 - used camera
body.

I couldn't come up with both camera and lens from the same merchant, as
it seems that Ricoh system is being phased out or discontinued, but it
seems you still can get a full kit for like USD 600.

Th GXR looks nice but there are either cheap kits (250 to 270 euros)
or expensive lenses for 500 euros and more.

The K-01 would be an alternative if it were not for the weird design
of the camera (300 euros for the body).

The problem I have with the ads (and this is not just restricted to
Photo.Net) is that the call to the add server often gets 'stuck' with
the result that the web page content doesn't show up at all. The only
way out is to reload the page (and hope that the same thing doesn't

You are not obliged to subscribe to a service that uses ads. I pay for a
website and it does not thrust ads in people's faces just because they haven't
also subscribed. I think it's rude of people to use websites that do that, and
photo.net et al should have the decency not to serve ads at all through
subscribers' pages.

If I were you I'd be very unhappy about that because you're paying photo.net to
host your pictures, yet their stupid ads are driving viewers away from them,
and nobody gains.

The shots of the countryside below are wonderful.
The deer, the homes on the culdsack, but the best

Thanks, Brian!

Well, yes, there were moments of anxiety as we dropped into a space with 4kV
power lines on 2 sides and 270kV lines about 100 ft downwind.  Not to mention
the pilot tapping the gauge on the top of the propane tank and murmuring "I'm a
=bit= concerned about the fuel situation" (being very well acquainted with
British understatement, this probably pricked my ears more than the other
passengers').

But, as they say, a good landing is one you can walk away from, and a =great=
landing is one that lets you use the aircraft again!

2013-06-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Bob:

I did not suggest that you should subscribe to Photo.net. I just
pointed out that "free" websites do not exist. If you are not paying
for the service, the website is selling you to advertisers in order to
pay the costs of running the "free" websitre.

I store thousands of image on Photo.Net for the Rotary Groups I work
with, for a local attorneys group, and for church and civic
activities.. I have done this for several years now, giving out the
link to Photo.Net. The people who use those images and download them
are, for the most part, far less sophisticated than the member of PDML
in the use of computers. I have received many compliments and many
expressions of thanks, but none of those users have ever had any
problems accessing the images or complained about the ads. The local
newspaper have also selected and downloaded, with my permission,
images I posted on the site. The ads are a very minor inconvenience,
and easily handled by almost everyone, except for a few here. I guess
your standards are higher, but if you are unable to look at my images
because of your dislike of Photo.Net, I guess I will have to live with
that.

The problem I have with the ads (and this is not just restricted to
Photo.Net) is that the call to the add server often gets 'stuck' with
the result that the web page content doesn't show up at all. The only
way out is to reload the page (and hope that the same thing doesn't

Re: GESO (22) - Balloon adventure

Quoting Rick Womer :

Yesterday we took our long-anticipated hot air balloon ride outside
Philly.  We launched at ~0630, on a cool and clear morning with
some mist and high clouds.  1:20 and about 9 miles later the
pilot dropped us quickly but gently into a remarkably small suburban
yard, threading between trees and power lines.  Impressive.

Six passengers and the pilot were stuffed into a space about 5 x 6
ft--cozy.  I had just enough room to turn 90 degrees and change
lenses.

Photographically the trip was challenging:  since quarters were
so tight and we stayed fairly close to the ground (it was calm above
~1000 ft, as the other balloon learned the hard way), I mostly used
my 10-17 fisheye.  The wide field of view was nice in the
cramped quarters, but the distortion was sometimes troublesome.
This especially affected shots of the balloon above us--it is
a beautiful sight, having this gigantic colorful sunlit
gasbag above one, but the distortion makes it look about the size of
a beach ball.

Enough blather!  The gallery is here:

That is an interesting looking device. I looked into the StackShot

it was too costly, seemed to not be amenable for moving subjects and
also does not have Pentax support (though that is limited only to the
shutter release cable and it would seem that it might be possible to
kludge one of the supported cables together with a Pentax cable or IR

Question about lightroom after upgrading to 5

2013-06-23 Thread Eric Weir

I've upgraded to LR 5 in my new computer from LR 3 on the old one. You will
recall---if not, take my word for it---I lost my entire photo database. It
actually happened back at the turn of the year, but I only discovered it a
couple weeks ago. Nevertheless, in LR3 I could still see the images even though
the database was missing.

I've imported my old catalogue into LR 5 following instructions I got on the
web [Laura Shoe video]. When I open up LR 5 and navigate to the empty folders I
no longer see the images. Only empty slide frames. Is that as it should be?

It shouldn't matter. The files are gone. I couldn't do anything with the images
in LR 3 anyway. But at least I had reminders of what I had.

[Or maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe there are things that could be done with whatever
it was I have in my LR 3 installation. I'll be surprise if that's the case, but
of course also delighted.]

Thanks,

One click and I'm gone.

It's up to you if you want your convenience to be at the expense of your
potential viewers, but I think that's a lousy attitude.

You've suggested that we should subscribe to photo.net if we don't want to see
ads. Do you seriously think people are going to subscribe to every website that
shows annoying ads annoyingly? Do you subscribe to them all? No, people are
just going to leave those sites. One of the basic rules of web design is don't
piss off your customers.

As for your millions of visitors, if you scale up the number of people on this
list who've complained a great many times about photo.net you may get some
sense of how much annoyance those ads cause to people. And if you scale up
similarly the number of people on this list who use that 'one click' to leave
your site rather than look at your pictures when an ad gets in the way, you'll
get some idea of how many viewers photo.net is driving away.

It's a downward spiral, you cut back on news. The way to stop it is to

causes the loss of more readers with attendant loss of revenue, which

Re: PESO - Blanca Peak

Alamosa is one of my favorite places in Colorado. Your Blanca Peak looks
like what I remember seeing the real peak. Not "over-cooked" at all.

From: Brian Walters

Quoting Igor Roshchin :

Brian,

That's a great photo!
Before I saw other people's (and your own) comments, my first reaction
was: "That's a photo worth going on a trip to the US".

Thanks, Igor.

The Alamosa area proved to be one of the more interesting places we
visited. We weren't expecting much (we only booked to stay there
because it's the closest town to the Great Sand Dunes NP), but the
landscape around the town is stunning.

Thanks to all who looked and/or commented. It seems that Jack and I
were the only ones who had some misgivings about the image. I was a
bit concerned that HDR Efex had 'over-cooked' it a bit. I still may
do some work on it to reduce the intensity of the colour of the
foreground (but I will keep the original version, Bruce :-)> ).

I don't know. I just remember one of the drawbacks of buying so-called

I'd pull the crop in on the left: I agree that the details on the beak
really make the photo, and I also agree that more wake is Good. If that
means losing some space on the left, I bet that's still the best
compromise. I probably would crop top and bottom, too.

Re: PESO: Cowgirl Poetry

2013-06-23 Thread Walt

Thanks, Darren.

I think the focus might have been thrown off when I was squatted down
and rocked back on my feet a bit when I lost balance. But, when I saw it
in LR, I liked it well enough that I thought I could still use it. And
once I warmed the tones just a bit and softened it, I really liked the
aesthetic, so I went with it. As in most cases when there's an issue
that needs to be diagnosed in my photos, I safely default to ineptitude.

As to right/wrong, correct/flawed dichotomies, I guess I just have a bit
of a hidebound viewpoint. That is, if the image could have been better
or more effective if done another way, I consider it flawed. I don't
generally apply that standard to anyone's work but my own, since I can't
really know what someone else had in mind when they were creating their
images. But, for my purposes, a little self-recrimination helps to make
me a bit more mindful in the future. I want to be a better photographer
next week than I was last week, and that's why I offer up my images for
critique.

It's nice to get kudos -- I really love it, in fact. I also really love
chili dogs. But a steady diet of kudos and chili dogs isn't the best
route to self-improvement.

Thanks again, and thanks to Stan and Frank for the suggestions.

The last shot on the post - the Bluet Damselfly - is a departure for me because
it is a focus stacked composition of 16 separate shots. This was compiled in
Photoshop. The focus stacking tool there had seemed to be useless to me because
it was such a PITA to manually stack images as layers in a single file -
but I finally stumbled on a webpage that explains how to use bridge to open
multiple files and then make them just layers of one file in Photoshop - ah,
life is good. I can see doing more focus stacking in the future - it worked
pretty well in the field yesterday.

C&C appreciated.

It reminds me of the Californian coast - except for the lack or Redwoods ;-)
