Tichý is pictured here with one of his long telephoto lenses. He ground lenses

Re: PESO - Light Load

2013-07-31 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Bob Sullivan :

Very good Brian and impressive.
That's new railroad, some of the only new in the past 50 years.
The BNSF trains end up passing me in Illinois.
They are bringing low sulfur coal back to our electric generating plants.
We have plenty of coal here, but it's high sulfur. Montana's is low sulfur.
It's easier to burn the low sulfur than scrub it out of the smoke stacks.
Regards, Bob S.

Thanks Bob.

They're certainly moving that coal around. While we were lunching at
least 6 trains went past - some BNSF and some Union Pacific. And this
was a Sunday. Mothers' Day, in fact.

Thanks to all who looked /commented. Much appreciated.

First of all, you have to have a bad camera

2013-07-31 Thread Larry Colen
If Knarf and Derby were to have an eccentric bastard Czech uncle, he
might have been Tichy:
http://www.messynessychic.com/2013/06/06/the-reclusive-peeping-tom-photographer-and-his-cardboard-camera/

Tichý is pictured here with one of his long telephoto lenses. He ground lenses
out of plastic with toothpaste and ash, putting them together with cardboard
toilet paper tubes, dressmaker’s elastic and old camera parts he found.

Tichý famously once said, “First of all, you have to have a bad camera”, and,
“If you want to be famous, you must do something more badly than anybody in the
entire world.”

In general, perhaps. However, the Zeiss T* lenses on my Hasselsplatz,
particularly the Biogon 38mm f/4.5 T* on the SWC, are as good a performer as
anything you'll find in 35mm/APS-C/etc. Somewhere near 200 lp@mm right out to

Re: Quesiton about P-67 to K adapters and P-67 lenses

2013-07-31 Thread Zos Xavius
Full frame lenses on APS-C are a mixed bag. A 16mp sensor is going to
outresolve all but the best lenses. On one hand, you are taking from
the sweet spot which is where the lens resolves the most detail, but
on the other hand you are not utilizing the full image circle of the
lens and thus throwing away potential resolution. A MF lens would be
even more challenged in terms of resolving power. The K-mount adapter
for the Q is a great example of this. A 5x crop factor sounds really
cool until your realize that only the best glass works well in terms
of IQ. CA is a major problem with that setup too as you are magnifying
CA tremendously. Ideally its best to use a lens that has an image
circle that is the same as whatever format you are shooting. I hear
some 645 lenses do OK on an APS-C sensor. They seem to be mostly ok on
full frame, that's for sure, but then your crop factor is much less.
67 lenses were designed to cover an even larger circle, so I wouldn't
expect amazing IQ. Some guy was using a 67 400mm lens with a k-5 and
was getting decent results. Paul is totally right, MF lenses don't
have to maintain the same resolution as 35mm lenses. Just like large
format lenses have even worse resolving power over a given area. You
can get a FF 135mm-200mm lens for probably cheaper. FWIW I have been
told that the 67 lenses were in general better than the 645 lenses
from back in the day. I don't know how true that is, but I would trust
the source as being accurate and based upon experience.

Re: New Smugmug site up

2013-07-31 Thread John Sessoms

I took a quick look at the Durham Museum gallery
(/Trains/Railroad-Days-2007-Durham).

I grew up in Durham, NC.

Your old station there looks nothing like the old station in my Durham,
especially since they demolished ours years ago & replaced it with a
parking garage (which was in turn demolished to be replaced with a
downtown loop bypassing main street).

Anyway, I noticed the roundhouse & the caption. Southern Railroad's
Spencer Shops have been preserved as the North Carolina Transportation
Museum including the old roundhouse & turntable which looks remarkably
like the one in your diorama.

If that sort of thing interests you, it might be worth a visit if you're
ever get to North Carolina.

And if you ever get to downtown Durham, NC there ain't nothing to do and
nowhere to go, but there's plenty of space in the parking garages.

Quesiton about P-67 to K adapters and P-67 lenses

2013-07-31 Thread Igor Roshchin

I am curious about the quality of Pentax 67 165/2.8 lens.
I am considering if it would work as a fast telephoto lens on a K5 with
an adapter.

Also, I wonder if there anybody here used the P-67-lens-to-K-camera
adapter with K5's, in particular the one by Fotodiox:
http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Mount-Adapter-Pentax-Camera/dp/B002JYCIR8/
Does it have any problem/limitation (besides not fitting K-30 for some
reason)?
The orignal Pentax's one is too expensive (almost $400 @ B&H).

Additionally, - has anybody used the 75 mm shift lens on K5 (or similar)
body with an adapter? Is there any problem with that setup?

Thank you,

Igor

Looks good! I tend to prefer non-JS/CSS mechanisms for UIs, but this is
one of the cleaner and more efficient ones I've seen.

It's especially nice that it almost completely hides the fact that you're
using SmugMug.

Is your site intended to be used for ordering photos? You might want to
link directly to the FAQ about SmugMug cookies, I had to turn on "accept
third-party cookies" to make it work. (I was testing what SmugMug did
with cropping on orders.)

It wouldn't be too hard to photoshop out that one balloon right over his
head if you wanted to get rid of it.

A little bit of selective levels & curves would probably make him pop as
well & then invert the selection to add a teeny-tiny bit of gaussian
blur to the other balloons which would make him stand out more.

And that's a photo where pumping the saturation just a bit wouldn't be a

Re: PESO: The Fireman

2013-07-31 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, Don!

It is indeed an expensive endeavor. Many of the balloons are owned or
sponsored by corporations, and they travel all over the country at
various festivals and fairs. When he was still alive, Malcom Forbes
had his own balloon, advertising Forbes magazine, in the shape of a
French chateau.

The Festival employs about 1500 people for the balloon activities, the
rock concerts several times each day, and the 150 vendor booths. A
local college estimated that the festival brings $42 million into the
local economy, ad the fire companies and other civic groups raise
money parking cars and doing other things at the festival.

Re: PESO: The Fireman

2013-07-31 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Bob!

Fortunately, the festival is at a small airport just a couple of miles
from our home. That way, I could make the 6:00 AM mass inflation and
6:30 AM mass ascension, rather than fighting the traffic to get to the
ones at 6:00 -- 6:30 PM.

Yes, the other balloon behind his head is a bother to me as well, but
with 125 balloons, and 150,000 spectators over the three days of the
festival, it is not always possible to get everything lined up. In
addition, the balloons rotate once they are airborne, and with a
balloon like this one, a shot of the back or side of the balloon just
is not as satisfying. I did get one of the fireman alone, but the
light and color are not as good, and the badge on his hat, showing the
twin towers of the old World Trade Center, is not visible:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17479900

Right after he took off, I grabbed a shot of the Fireman next to the
American Flag Balloon, but again the light, the color and the angle
are not as pleasing:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17479901

It was a beautiful day, and I had a marvelous time, as you can
probably tell.

New Smugmug site up

2013-07-31 Thread George Sinos
I bit the bullet and hit the go button on the new smugmug site.

It's nothing earth shattering and there are other designs that are
more contemporary, but I'm keeping my family in mind and not changing
things too much to fast.

For you others using Smugmug, this is based on the "Smugmug" design.

There are a few irregularities so far,

All of the featured photos for galleries were retained, but the
Featured photos for Categories (now called Folders) were randomly
replaced. It took about five minutes to clean that up.

I'm not sure if I want to retain the slideshow and the folders on the
home page. I might get rid of one or the other.

The slideshow is set to automatically resize based on the screen size.
It's changed sizes a couple of times so I'm not sure how to predict
it. You can set it to a fixed size but I'd rather not.

A few of my old videos were replaced by thumbnails or translated very,
very small. I'm waiting for an answer on support for this one.

I'm going to go through all of the galleries and probably pick
different gallery styles. The new styles are much cleaner than some
of the old.ones I used in the past.

I also need to go to my Squarespace blog and decide how to make a few
changes there to make the two look a little more integrated.

All in all, with a few minor exceptions, things moved rather easily.
The main thing to remember is that you can leave things the way they
are until you are ready to switch. And they have made it difficult to
switch by accident. You select the "unveil" button, then you get a
standard "are you sure?" message, then you have to type in a word and
click another button to finally make the changes go public.

Here it is

Re: PESO: The Fireman

2013-07-31 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Alan!

Yes, they do go all out to make interesting and attractive balloons.
There are new ones every year. Last year there was a man in a space
suit, and a huge green dragon, although the dragon never got more than
100 feet off the ground, and remained tethered, as it was difficult to
control.

I have take rides in hot air balloons in the past, but not on this
occasion. Too pricey at the festival, and I was too busy eating and
taking photographs.

RE: making Gmail show own messages (was: Re: testing OT)

2013-07-31 Thread Gerrit Visser
Outlook does the same, I find it difficult to say it is a bug or a feature
though. OTOH in Outlook I can set an option to store the sent email with the
replied to one, if it is in a folder other than Inbox. But that doesn't mean
of course that the list received it, only that I saved my sent email.
I never use the web interfaces for email, only Outlook. That way I get a
consistent view and behaviour.

Google thinks it's helping you:

this is a bug, not a feature, but arguing with Google is pointless, so just
hack around it; if you create a filter to label mail from the list:

"pdml"

all list messages, including yours, should appear in that label (aka
mailbox); if for some reason that doesn't work, add a criterion to the
filter to also label your messages sent to the list:

without more info the question is too broad; it really depends on the form
of the original email data; if it's on an IMAP server, simply point
Thunderbird at that account (you can have multiple email accounts in TBird),
and possibly copy it to your Gmail account or a local folder; if it's stored
in local email files, it will help to know what format (mbox, maildir, some
corruption thereof, something else?); with a handle on that you should be
able to google up some resources, but the answer may be here:

Thanks, Don.

Yes, the time of day was part of the problem. They started inflating
the balloons at 6:00 AM. Although this was not one of the first to be
inflated, the sun was still low in the sky and basically behind
Elvis's left shoulder. I had to position myself to keep the sun and
its glare out of the frame.

Re: testing OT

2013-07-31 Thread John Sessoms

When SpamCop was black-listing RoadRunner, I switched over to Yahoo.

In order be able to receive PDML using Pop3 & Thunderbird, I had to sign
up for a paid Yahoo account. It wasn't a whole lot of money for the
basic account, but there's still the principle that I'm now PAYING for
Yahoo email.

Yahoo apparently filters OUTGOING email.

When I read PDML, if I try to respond to too many messages in one
session (where "too many" appears to be the number *3*) I get some
stupid error about "resources are not available, try again later".

Except that the message doesn't get saved in drafts so that I can try
again later, it just disappears forever.

Re: testing OT

2013-07-31 Thread mike wilson
My turn, now.

I'm having to temporarily use the (multiple expetives deleted) awful
webmail interface of my provider. This went to some gmail subsytem a
while ago. Messages to PDML are not appearing to me unless someone
answers them; then I see the quote.

The only options for message encoding are "use default" (without
defining what that default is) and "use unicode ft-8", which is what I
have it set to. I think this is not a message encoding issue,
however: I seem to remember that there should be some option for
setting messages that are sent to mail lists to show. But it doesn't
appear to be there. Anyone any idea where I should be looking?

If not, does anyone have any idea about manually importing old data
into Thunderbird? I went from XP to Ubuntu - the auto import does not
want to work and if I try to import the address book file and inbox
folder manually, it stops T'bird working. If I had any wit at all, I
would be at the end of it.

Error message when starting Lightroom

2013-07-31 Thread Eric Weir

Recently I've been getting an error message when I start Lightroom. Kinda
vague: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules."

Vague to me. Maybe not so to someone here?

Background: A couple days ago I uninstalled Java. First time I started
Lightroom afterwards I learned that it requires Java. I've since reinstalled
Java, but now I get this error message.

If anyone has a clue what might be going on it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Smugmuggers I need your help!!!

2013-07-31 Thread George Sinos
Ann -

I doubt that you need to do anything with CSS or HTML. I've been
working with the new site this morning and everything is drag and
drop. I've been able to do everything I need to do so far with just
the customization settings that exist.

My only problem is discovering what can be done. I've been fumbling
through things. This afternoon I'm actually going to read through the
help files. (Yeah, I should have done that first, but...)

It's very similar to the system used by Squarespace where my blog is
hosted. Actually, much nicer. Squarespace doesn't have the sandbox
feature.

I'll probably make the new site available this afternoon, as it is,
and make adjustments over the next few days. I'm glad there are a
couple of weeks before classes start. That gives me time to make
alternate plans if the private features I use for class don't work.

quick review of Direction and Quality of Light

2013-07-31 Thread Larry Colen
I've been reading Direction and Quality of light by Van Niekirk.

If what you're looking for is a fairly easy to read book, where someone
talks about specific lighting challenges, and chats about how he solved
them, it's pretty good. Like most books on lighting that I've read it
falls a lot more into the category of what I consider "lighting cookbooks"
than "lighting textbooks". So far, the only book on lighting that I've read
that starts out explaining principles, then explains in detail how those
principles apply to different lighting situations is Light, Science and
Magic. Direction and Quality of light has a little more discussion of
principles than many books on lighting, but it is pretty anecdotal.

I think that the most important thing that he emphasizes is to pay
attention to the light that is already there and what there is available
to bounce light off of.

Van Niekirk spends so much time referring to his equipment my
brand and model, that I am beginning to suspect that he has worked
deals with manufacturers, that if they give him gear, he'll mention
it in his book.

There is definitely valuable material in the book, and I have
picked up a few things from reading it. It would be particularly
useful to someone who has not read any books on lighting and
isn't as interested in the theory behind the lighting setup as
much as how to solve particular problems.

OT - converting K5-IIs videos with avidemux

2013-07-31 Thread Igor Roshchin

Following the suggestion given in the thread referenced by Darren, I've
been trying to find the optimum way of recoding videos from my K5-IIs so
that they are suitable for uploading to YouTube (i.e. without clicking).
LavAAC
Avidemux is a powerful software, but its command-line interface is
convoluted and inconsistent.

First, there is a big difference in the command line syntax between
2.5.* and 2.6.* versions (and it looks like even within 2.6.* line).
Second, the Wiki documentation is messed up, and in order to see it, you
have to do it in "view source mode" (And that seems to last for more
than half an year).
There is no mentioning which version that documentation is for (2.5 or
2.6). The names of codecs are inconsistent between the documentation,
built-in help ( /help), GUI, and reality.

Argh!

But it looks I am finally getting to a reasonable combination of command
line parameters which will allow me to (semi-)automate conversion of videos.

And Pentax support is so far stubbornly responded to me in response to
the filed problem report that it is caused by AF. (???!!!)
So, at least their customer support is in the denial mode.

Igor

Yes and no.  That is, 12800 is "too rough" for really good large prints;
however, every time I ask myself, "Would I rather the camera lock me out
of that shot?" my answer is, "Hell, no!"

IME, the only time it's useful to limit the ISO is when you haven't been
paying attention to the settings and you're shooting a static scene at
1/5000 for no good reason.

My article about the concours held here in Michigan last weekend is up on the
Times website. They used half a dozen photos. I had provided quite a few more
in the hopes that they'd do a slide show, but they were shorthanded this week,
and their software makes slideshow creation a complicated task. They tell me
they're working on a fix. In any case, the piece and six pics are here:

Great stuff, Paul. A friend of mine in Rhodesia used to have a Cord (plus a
1928 Fiat roadster). I well remember a couple of short trips in it. He had
to pull away in 2nd gear because it shuddered so badly in 1st. He said it
was one of only two which were ever imported into Southern Africa. The other
was originally in Pretoria but was later bought by a US can museum still
bearing it's TP number-plate. Apparently they got some mileage out of that
by claiming it had belonged to Tyrone Power!
