Re: OT Brilliant

2013-08-03 Thread Boris Liberman
IIUC you can swap between all mounts that are supported by Sigma for the
given lens. So Pentax is in fact included...

It would seem that Sigma is skyrocketing to become the most desirable
lens brand - at least in terms of versatility, diversity and
user-friendly useful features. Also, it seems that their recent lenses
are just as good optically as anything else out there, so Sigma gets my
thumbs up.

Oh, the analogy with grand piano never occurred to me. But I also did
like the geometry and the idea that this scene would nicely lend itself
to b&w rendering.

Yes, the Heliar 15 is quite a nice lens. I had one once upon a time
that I used on the Leica CL ... When I compared it with the Zeiss
Hologon 16mm T* for the Contax G2, the Zeiss lens was obviously a
better performer in many ways, but what a pain to use compared to the
Voigtländer. AND five times the price. (I sold the Contax G2 kit
shortly afterwards, never really got used to it; liked the CL and a
couple of lenses much more. Still have a CL today, which I use
occasionally.) I keep going back and forth on whether to acquire
another Heliar 15. It's a bit wide for me, really; I think I'll do
better with the Ultron 21mm f/1.8.

Well, it depends. If I understand correctly you shoot with Leica M9. If
so, then on my Ricoh GXR-M the Heliar 15 mm will provide angle of view
similar to that of Ultron 21 mm on M9.

Can you please elaborate on the specifics in which Hologon 16 would
outperform Heliar 15? I am curious, you see. Of course I'm interested in
the performance under the limitations (such as maximal aperture) of
Heliar. Because, in such wide a lens what I think is more important is
sharpness and here Heliar does just great. I did not yet have a chance
to make a photograph where its OOF rendering qualities would be seen. I
doubt such a shot would readily come my way :-).

I was thinking about a lens to put between 15 mm and 40 mm but I have
two lensors - 18 mm and 33 mm (actual F.L.) that sit there just nicely.
And also it seems that Ultron 21/1.8 is rather big and heavy due to its
fast aperture...

Thanks, Bob.

Indeed, you're right, the little girl in the 2nd image is not Anat. Anat
shoots with Pentax P&S camera, not the cell phone :-).

I should point out that the fact that Heliar is so small and so sharp
has to do with the mount, so indeed - no K-mount or any other SLR mount
for that matter. As of recently I don't feel like shooting with big SLR
(compared to my Ricoh the K-5 is positively huge) at all.

I love those mules :-)

What a nice set, Don - really puts you there - I have a thing
about square thumbnails, though - I'd have liked to have seen the
whole set in the proportions you shot them in ... which is always
my preference - Then someone can really see what you shot instead
of some almost arbitrary crop.

There is some redundancy - I imagine a few you have up there because you
couldnt'decide which you liked better. I'm entitled to say that,

having done much the same many times myself :-)

A couple of things jumped out at me upon review of your collection -

*Spring Blossom's is the title but most of the blossoms are out of focus.
I like the softness, the colors of this as is. If I had a version with the
blossoms more in focus, I might still prefer this. But unfortunately I
don't have an in-focus version to do the comparison. It won't be in my
final set unless I need more flora to balance the avian fauna shots.
*# 22 & 33 are almost identical I'd eliminate 33 as the dark mass in the
upper edge is more distracting than in 22.

Agree, inclusion of 33 was a mistake, it is now gone.

*# 31's subject needs more room to the edges.
Agree, but it is uncropped. A grab shot with a 300mm on the camera, I
couldn't get any further away without stepping off the dock.

Whose workshop is it and where is it centered?
John and Barbara Gerlach. We'll be working out of a lodge about 20 miles
south of Munising.

Enjoy the experience and ask questions. I'd also advise having the
instructor look at several of your compositions thru your camera and have
him show you what his compositions of the same subject would be.

You're paying him to do these things.

Good suggestion - thanks.

I've learned more about light & compositions during my workshops than any
other experience.
I have three "issues" on my list: light (including use of flash),
composition, and when/how/why to use a polarizer.

Re: Enablement - Sima 100mm f2.0 Macro! And T-Mount Question

2013-08-03 Thread Mark C
One of the things about the Sima is that it does not seem to have a
sweet spot that retains sharpness. But it still is an interesting lens
and one that I expect to have some fun with.To my eye, some of the shots
remind me of images I would see in the late 60's early 70's. There is
something organic about distortions that arise in the optics vs those
added digitally later and they have a different feel to them.

Seriously, as most of you probably already know, soft focus does have
its place. The brides would love a series that I would do (back in my
wedding photography days) that was close-ups of the B&G looking into
each other's eyes (shot by doorway or window light with no flash, and
from the perspective of over the shoulder of one and then the other).
Back then we would use a UV filter that had clear nail polish dabbed
around the outside, leaving the very center portion clear. The effect
could vary depending upon the aperture and how much light you had
spilling on the front of the filter.

Soft focus is also good for vain older women's portraiture.

Nice photos, both of them. That's about as brutal as I can get. "Etude" really
does seem reminiscent of an open grand piano when I look at the geometry. Love
the shot of the iPhone picture taker too.

Yes, the Heliar 15 is quite a nice lens. I had one once upon a time that I used
on the Leica CL ... When I compared it with the Zeiss Hologon 16mm T* for the
Contax G2, the Zeiss lens was obviously a better performer in many ways, but
what a pain to use compared to the Voigtländer. AND five times the price. (I
sold the Contax G2 kit shortly afterwards, never really got used to it; liked
the CL and a couple of lenses much more. Still have a CL today, which I use
occasionally.) I keep going back and forth on whether to acquire another Heliar
15. It's a bit wide for me, really; I think I'll do better with the Ultron 21mm
f/1.8.

But I figure networking with photographers begets networking with

bonfire with the tailgates down, a pork shoulder and a bunch of
chickens
on a smoker, multiple coolers full of beer with a few bottles of
whiskey
scattered hither and yon, with the occasional left-handed cigarette
making its way around the periphery.

And the only pictures that avail themselves at such parties feature
out-stretched tongues, bottles held aloft, and ironically struck

a section where the model can put any restrictions that she

not posting them on particular sites (facebook and such)

Thanks, Larry! I appreciate the help.

I'm not sure how much I'll be around the computer over the weekend,

as my

birthday happens to fall on Sunday. So, I may be out and about. But,

as long

as my remaining brain cells cooperate, I'll try to jog your memory

on it.

On the subject of a chaparone, I have had good luck with
portrait parties, where I set things up and photograph
several friends in one session. Most of the work is in setting
things up, so it is little extra work once things are set up
to run a couple other models in front of the camera. You also
get some great benefits from people interacting with their friends.

Also, even if one flakes, you still have someone to photograph.

It's also a great way to quickly build up your portfolio, because
you get several new models in a day, rather than just one.

A photo party sounds like a great idea, though I'd probably need to

arrange

it among a different social circle from the one I typically run in.

I've

done precious little (actually zero) networking among area

photographers, so

I just don't know all that many people who'd be inclined to attend

such an

event. But, if I can get a few model shoots under my belt and start

making a

few mutual acquaintances, I can see that being a great source of

photo

opportunities.

There is a bit of cultural and artistic activity in the lower-town

area of

the city just east of me (Paducah), but it tends to be a bit

insular. If I

can get a foot in that door, I'm sure I'll have all manner of

opportunities.

I hope to be able to put together a decent collection in the not

too

distant future, and maybe put together a small exhibit at one of the

local

artists' haunts. With any luck, a few good modeling shoots will

bring about

that day a little sooner.

OT - Positive Customer Service

2013-08-03 Thread Paul Sorenson
In March 2005 I bought a Sigma EF 500DG Super to use with my *istDS and
DS2. Worked OK but with the next Pentax generation it was good only for
manual use since it didn't match P-TTL. At the time Sigma offered a
free upgrade, but I used it as a good excuse to bring an AF540 into the
house, followed more recently by a Metz 58.

Fast forward to July 2013 and I'm looking at the Sigma and thinking it
might be worth the $10 postage to send it in a see if it's upgradeable
for the K-5 and, if so, how much Sigma would charge for said upgrade.
So...off it went to Sigma in NY on July 20. Ten days later UPS is at
the door with a package from Sigma - with my upgraded 500DG - no charge.

Always nice to have an extra backup.

Re: OT: Perusing Model Mayhem

2013-08-03 Thread Walt

Finished? Hell, I'm not sure my portfolio is even started! ;)

My biggest difficulty has been deciding which of my images are
appropriate to the context. The vast majority of my portraiture is
casual/unposed, environmental stuff -- hardly any of which is geared
toward accentuating beauty. Unfortunately, some of my best work reflects
some ugly aspects of humanity.

As for finding models on MM, you can either do targeted
searches and contact models directly through their profiles, or
post a casting call. I've used both and some combination will
get you useful responses.

Ruthlessly edit your profile pics. Only put up your best work,
keep it current, and don't pad it with near-misses and maybes.

Hi Everyone:

Just got back from a conference in Portland, Oregon. Snuck in some
photography, but nothing great, though did catch this food truck vendor, which

If you want to see a pretty standard shot of the famous Multnomah Falls, click

Re: Enablement - Sima 100mm f2.0 Macro! And T-Mount Question

2013-08-03 Thread Darren Addy
Seriously, as most of you probably already know, soft focus does have
its place. The brides would love a series that I would do (back in my
wedding photography days) that was close-ups of the B&G looking into
each other's eyes (shot by doorway or window light with no flash, and
from the perspective of over the shoulder of one and then the other).
Back then we would use a UV filter that had clear nail polish dabbed
around the outside, leaving the very center portion clear. The effect
could vary depending upon the aperture and how much light you had
spilling on the front of the filter.

Soft focus is also good for vain older women's portraiture.

Walt my friend, watch your email for that makeup tip-sheet.

Believe me, experienced models will be able to tell your level based
on your portfolio. You'll have the "Some Experience" checkbox ticked
in the profile too. You don't need to elaborate about the clockwork
stuff. That's why you're there on Mayhem anyway -- to improve on your

Both eagle shots are good, but I personally prefer the one without the
large expanse of white sky (the one with more tree). It doesn't show
as much of the eagle but is a stronger image overall (IMHO).

I like the softness, the colors of this as is. If I had a version with the
blossoms more in focus, I might still prefer this. But unfortunately I don't
have an in-focus version to do the comparison. It won't be in my final set
unless I need more flora to balance the avian fauna shots.

Agree, but it is uncropped. A grab shot with a 300mm on the camera, I couldn't

Thanks Bipin, that's awfully nice of you to say. It was seriously
my first attempt at photographing planes since I owned a camera with
a telephoto lens.

> How do they allow you to enter armed with a Bigma? Lucky you.

I was just outside the fence, I used the GPS on some of the shots,
and just updated the location info on the rest. If you click
on the location, it will show a map of how I was in the parking lot
for waiting for people to arrive, just off the end of the
runway.

The owl in these shots was sitting on the fence at the end of
the runway.

According to the map, I was a few hundred meters from the end of the runway.
I was shooting at 500m, until the planes were just landing, then I'd have
to zoom out.
