I take it that is at the observatory? The first time we went there (c. 1980)
there was no security at all. When we were there last in 2004 it was all
like a prison but I don't remember the details.

So how big is a Giant Kingfisher? I'm wondering if it's about the

Once upon a time I was shooting breaking waves with my Pentax 6x7. I'd snap a
fairly close shot then run up the [gravel] beach so my feet wouldn't get wet.

The inevitable happened and I slipped over while running. On the way down I
had the presence of mind to extend my arm to keep the camera out of the water,
so while I was soaked from head to toe the camera was fine.

My wife found it quite entertaining... such a pity she didn't get a photo.

Re: I need a tripod

2013-08-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Yes, the leg clamps are fast and easy to operate, very secure. It gives up an
inch or two in collapsed length compared to the 4-section model, but it's
sturdier and a about two inches taller, and a touch lighter. Lots of trade-off
... I'm very pleased with it.

I didn't mention, but the 190 also has a built in bag hook so you can stabilize
it further by hanging your camera bag or a sandbag from it.

The Manfrotto 055 model that Paul and others are talking about is also an
excellent buy, but it is significantly bigger to carry. This does the number as
my light tripod. My larger tripod is set of Feisol CT3442 Tournament legs ...
very tall, very very strong (rated for 25lbs), very very light (4.2lbs complete
in the fitted case with an Acratech Ultimate Ball Head and center column), and
it packs down very small for its size (the bag is 5" by 19" with everything in
it). But it's got twist-lock legs and is a much slower tripod in operation.
I've had that one since 2005 or so, it does a terrific job when you need/want
the elevation and need to be able to carry a load.

But for fast field use, this little Manfrotto is the bee's knees. I think I've
taken the Feisol out twice in the past two years, and I seem to find a use for
the Manfrotto 190 about every other day. :-)

Back in the late 1960s, when I was in law school, there were a number
of anti-war demonstrations that got out of hand. The Newark police
use horses very effectively to break up unruly crowds before them
turned into mobs. When six horses are headed towards you, you get out
of the way as quickly as you can.

Hi Christine: I've made a pledge not to buy another Calumet tripod. I bought

Re: I need a tripod

2013-08-18 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, Steve. Are the leg clasps easy to pull open for height adjustment?
The price for this one is very attractive, but I need clasps that are fairly
easy to open and close. I have a cheap tripod and among other problems, the
clasps are a pain to manipulate. I like the weight on the Induro as well. The
one I posed is 5 lbs. I would definitely like something lighter.

Thanks, Christine

Yeah, cops use horses here mostly in touristy areas for PR but their more

Ironically, the film crew don't seem to be using compact lightweight

After last week's marathon three-day shoot at the Mopar Nationals, I'm still
very fond of that tripod. it's light, it's sturdy, and it's easy to configure,
both in terms of the leg angle and the leg locks. It never got in the way,
which is the best thing one can say about a tripod.

Re: I need a tripod

2013-08-18 Thread Darren Addy
Well, you asked for thoughts, so here are mine (such as they are). It
depends on the sort of "travel" your travel is, but I think it is
worth asking whether you need a tripod at all, or rather might get
away with a monopod. Monopods are much easier to carry, lightweight
and can even serve as a walking stick on hikes. A quick release plate
on the camera and receptor on the monopod makes converting it to use
much quicker and easier than a full-fledged tripod. I used mine on a
recent day hike around the zoo and found it perfect for giving me
enough steadiness to drop a couple of EVs of shutter speed when
needed, even at 500mm.

I also have a cheap Velbon DF mini which is lightweight and more of a
tabletop tripod, but perfect for those times you need to put the
camera on a tripod for a self-timer selfie (or group with everybody
including YOU in the picture). It would make a decent backpacking
tripod, if you didn't mind the low camera angles or else you set it up
on something higher.

My main tripod is a Manfrotto 3021BPro, which is the model before the
current models, but a well-regarded tripod. I would like it a lot,
even if I hadn't found it at at thrift store for $7.50. Still in the
market for a Real ballhead for it and trying to decide between Really
Right Stuff and Acratech, at the moment.

True enough. I recently bought a Manfrotto 393H as a travel tripod.
It fits on my camera backpack and is compact and convenient.

It's better than hand holding for longer exposures, especially if the

Impressive stuff. I really need to get off my but and try some of this.

Aesthetically, I probably prefer the more traditional first one but
the second, with the aircraft lights contrasting with the star trails,
is the more interesting.

Re: PESO - Storm over the Great Sand Dunes

2013-08-18 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks to all for the comments - much appreciated. It seems there is
no strong preference for either #1 or #2, which pretty much reflects
my own view. I'll just have to include both in the photo book I'm
putting together of the trip :-)>

A few specific responses:

Quoting Rick Womer :

Both are very nice; the second is the more dramatic image.

I have two ideas that might bring them closer to what you remember:

First, was it late in the day?  Warming up the color temp a bit
might help.

Second, the foreground in the second shot is a silhouette, and
bringing it into the visible range would add interest and depth.

It was actually late morning. I'll have a look at warming them up slightly.

The foreground in No.2 is a problem. I bracketed the exposures but
not enough on the + side. I spent a lot of time trying to extract
some detail from the foliage but the result was very murky and, to my
eye, distracting. This is why I went for the silhouette. Together
with the dark clouds above, it forms an irregular frame around the
dunes.

Quoting Alan C :

Great shots. The 2nd really shows the power of nature. And I suppose
there was lightening & thunder too?

No - not that I remember. Quite a bit of snow, though. The next day
the tops of the dunes were snow-capped.

Quoting Bob Sullivan :

Wonderful photos.
You put us who live in the USA to shame
with such great shots in only a limited visit.

I think visitors often see more of a country than those who live
there, even if it only involves sampling the country. It's only in
the last few years that I've been to Western Australia, north
Queensland, the Centre and Tasmania. A visitor would probably see all
of that in a few short weeks

Subject: PESO - Storm over the Great Sand Dunes

Back in May we visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park near
Alamosa, Colorado.  Not long after we left, a storm arrived
from the

south which we were able to observe from a lookout a few miles from
the Park.

The light on the dunes was stunning as the sun illuminated them below
the storm clouds.  Between the three of us (my two sons and me) we
must have taken well over 100 shots but I don't think any of us
captured the scene as we remembered it.

These are the two best that I came up with:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PESO/slides/_IGP2576-K5-1peso.html

Comments appreciated, especially as to which is preferred (if any).

Re: I need a tripod

2013-08-18 Thread John

I've had good experience with Manfrotto/Bogen tripods, but mine are all
OLD heavy-weight aluminum tripods.

It gets good reviews on B&H with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5; 100%
would recommend to a friend; PROS of "folds away, lightweight, stable,
unfolds quickly" and no CONS listed.

I couldn't get the video to play. It just gave me an orange candy-cane
stripe & the word loading. I read all the responses on the thread while
waiting for it.

If I *was* going to buy it, I'd look for it locally, and buy it from B&H
if I couldn't find one around here.

Actually, Alan, I believe it is a Papilio glaucus, Eastern Tiger
Swallowtail, rather than a Papilio rutulus, the Western Tiger
Swallowtail, does not appear east of the Rocky Mountain States. They
are quite similar, but the Eastern is a bit larger, and the yellow
female has a band of blue spots, rather than the fewer blue and orange
spots on both genders of the Western. Of course, they are almost
never at rest long enough to get a good look, so it is fortunate in a
way that their ranges are distinct.

Yeah, I haven't carefully investigated the star system yet since

Somehow the waterfall photo has a rating of 4.86 with two votes, and I

Cool, someone translated Bob Dylan into Latin. Do they have one for all

Looks like they're symbols for the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

I'd be willing to bet at some time every day (probably noon GMT) the tip
of the shadow from that sun symbol reaches down to touch somewhere along
that figure 8 thingy in the middle, and where it touches tells the
"season".

On the front page of the BBC News website today

not very interested, but the accompanying thumbnail - which is not repeated

It is almost identical to one that I took during a riot in London on May

Here is the thumbnail:

Here is my version:

The other photographer and I must have been shoulder-to-shoulder, and
snapped just a few seconds apart.

It was quite a shock when I saw it this morning - I thought it was mine, but

Do you mean as an overlay in the LR processing environment?

If your talking digital capture images, this metadata is an embedded part of
all out-of-camera raw and JPEG images, don't need to do anything for Lightroom
to import it.

You can display it using the Library module's Metadata panel. The popup menu
next to the panel title gives you the option to switch between a number of
metadata display and editing templates. If you want to see it as an overlay on
the image in the main window, look in the View menu, in the section that starts
with View Options, to set it up. In the Library module's Grid mode, you can
also configure the cells in their largest expansion display form to include
metadata in the four corners of the upper "info box" of the image cells. Just
click on those areas and you get a popup menu with the items you can display.

Forgot to include: All up weight of the 190CXPro3 with Markins Q3 head fitted

Price when I bought it was about 2.5x the BeFree setup ... which yet again
reinforces that you only get two out of three: sturdy, light, inexpensive. Pick
any two and you're fine. ;-)

No direct response, but during the run-up to my Alaska trip, someone sent
this URL:

http://bythom.com/support.htm

which gives a lot of general advice. The critical point is buried near
the end: your tripod weight must be somewhere between one and 1.5x of
your total camera weight (camera plus lens). Otherwise there just isn't
enough stability.

yes it is compact but it seems a little heavy (5.3 lbs) for the price and for
how light-duty it is

Amazon reviews say the head is removable: good

best feature is how compact it is, but that can work against you - low working
height and less stability

as a quick comparison i found the Induro AKB1 which is 3.6 lbs, probably more
stable, plus cheaper, taller and with an Arca-compatible head; biggest drawback
is 26" closed length

look around, Induro or another brand probably has a model very comparable to
the Manfrotto at a lower price, or something as compact but better built for
the same price; i have been shopping for a carbon-fiber tripod, slightly
heavier duty, and Induro is a candidate brand; the tripod selection process is
an exercise in multivariate compromise

Beddlestead Lane

2013-08-18 Thread Bob W
This is a phone snap of Beddlestead Lane:

I cycled to Brighton today, and my normal route for getting out of London
takes me along Beddlestead Lane. In my mind it is the moment when you truly
know you're out of London, and it always makes me catch my breath to see
this valley (and I always mean to bring a proper camera and take a proper
picture in proper light...).

The lane itself is the curving line from right to left through the bottom of
the valley. Unfortunately for me, the descent is very twisty, the lane is
very narrow, and there is a lot of gravel, so I never have the courage to
take it at full pelt. Normally very fit young men overtake at high speed me
as I struggle up the other side, but just recently I have been able to pass
other wheezing middle-aged men, so things must be getting better!

Today I went over Ditchling Beacon for the first time - to my surprise I
didn't have to get off and push, even after 60 miles of cycling, and in fact
I actually overtook several people!

Cheers,
Thunder Thighs!

Photography a few years ago...
http://www.calumetphoto.com/product/calumet-7100-tripod-with-three-way-quick-release-head/CK7114/

The price was right, it has served me well for my purposes. I don't do
much landscape work, so it mostly stays in my studio... Not carbon
fiber, but it supports 11 pounds... weighs 4.5 pounds.

Good luck!

Looks like a well thought out travel tripod for light duty use.

It seems a little too light duty, tho. 8.5 lbs is pretty modest ... I stick
with tripods that can support 10lbs or higher. And it's not clear that the head
is interchangeable, big negative for me as I use Arca Swiss camera plates and
would prefer to fit a compact RRS head. Manfrotto RC2 plates aren't
particularly wonderful in my experience ... finally got rid of all of them as
they were often frustratingly imprecise.

My travel tripod is a set of "Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 3-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod
Legs", which pack down to about 22 inches and weigh about 2.5 lbs, and a
Markins Q3 Emilié head, which I detach and carry separately in my baggage. The
legs just fit diagonally into my rollaway carry on bag ... I pack the rest of
my stuff around them if I'm going to do that, or I just strap them onto the
bottom of my carry-on shoulder bag. They have a column flip on which is very
very handy for low angle shots. The legs are rated for about 11lbs, about three
times the weight of my heaviest camera gear which is what I like to see.

Couple of pictures using them to shoot a photo of my Brompton folded up in the
living room this morning:

enjoy!

Re: I need a tripod

2013-08-18 Thread Jack Davis
What is it's maximum height? Is it carbon fiber? How convenient is the leg
adjustment system?
I would be wondering how stable it is if extremely light weight.
Some of these questions may have been answered through the add, but my quick
scan didn't spot them.

Hi Everyone:

I saw this new tripod on amazon:  especially made for travel and mobility.
If you click to the images page, there's a video showing the tripod "in
action."  Any thoughts?
It's amazingly compact and can sustain up to 8.5 pounds.

Would be interested in any thoughts.

Thanks, Christine

The light on the dunes was stunning as the sun illuminated them below
the storm clouds. Between the three of us (my two sons and me) we
must have taken well over 100 shots but I don't think any of us
captured the scene as we remembered it.

These are the two best that I came up with:
